Swift.org – Welcome to Swift.org

Swift goes Open Source Screenshot

We are excited by this new chapter in the story of Swift. After Apple unveiled the Swift programming language, it quickly became one of the fastest growing languages in history. Swift makes it easy to write software that is incredibly fast and safe by design. Now that Swift is open source, you can help make the best general purpose programming language available everywhere.

Not only is Swift on GitHub, but the Swift team will be working completely in the open. Apple did a spectacular job with the release. Not only do we have the source code, but we have the entire commit history for each project, a very detailed view into the Swift team’s development process, and access to the Swift evolution process. Everything you need to know is on Swift.org.

Apple Launching A9-Based iPhone 6s and 6s Plus With 3D Touch on September 25

Apple Launching A9X-Based 12.9″ iPad Pro in November for $799+

The iPad Pro has a 64-bit A9X processor that delivers up to 1.6 times faster performance over the iPad Air 2, with up to twice as fast graphics. Apple also says the tablet is faster than 80% of portable PCs shipped in the last 12 months, allowing users to run apps such as iMovie with desktop-class performance.

The A9X chip is capable of processing data so quickly, it demanded a new memory architecture. iPad Pro features a revamped storage controller that helps deliver performance better than some desktop computers. This increases read and write speeds, so you can quickly open even the largest files. Like the big 4K movie you just edited or all the RAW images you imported from your HD camera.

Apple’s iPad turns 5: Where does it go from here? – CNET

The numbers are staggering. Apple has sold more than 250 million iPads, making it the fastest-selling product in the company’s history. There are more than 675,000 apps designed specifically to run on the tablet.

But the iPad, which first hit the market five years ago Friday, is at a crossroads. Shipments have slumped despite Apple’s best efforts to entice consumers with thinner and smaller models. The question that originally dogged the first iPad — why buy one? — has arisen again with smartphones getting larger and laptops getting lighter and more compact.

Highly critical “Ghost” allowing code execution affects most Linux systems | Ars Technica

The vulnerability in the GNU C Library (glibc) represents a major Internet threat, in some ways comparable to the Heartbleed and Shellshock bugs that came to light last year. The bug, which is being dubbed “Ghost” by some researchers, has the common vulnerability and exposures designation of CVE-2015-0235. While a patch was issued two years ago, most Linux versions used in production systems remain unprotected at the moment. What’s more, patching systems requires core functions or the entire affected server to be rebooted, a requirement that may cause some systems to remain vulnerable for some time to come.

Mostly a pitch for pre-orders right now, with the price-tag starting at $189 for the first 2,000 pledgers, and stepping up thereafter to $199 for another thousand backers.

EFF, Mozilla back new certificate authority that will offer free SSL certificates | PCWorld

A new organization supported by Mozilla, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and others is working to set up a new certificate authority (CA) that will provide website owners with free SSL/TLS certificates.

The new CA will be called Let’s Encrypt and is expected to become operational in the second quarter of next year. It will be run by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG), a new California public-benefit corporation.

The goal of this effort is to get as many people as possible to use the TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol—the more secure successor of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)—said Josh Aas, executive director of ISRG. Aas is also a senior technology strategist at Mozilla.

The new CA will not only provide certificates for free, but will also automate the certificate issuance, configuration and renewal processes in order to encourage widespread TLS adoption.

The goal is to make getting a certificate as easy as possible

Apple will soon let third-party products use its Lightning port, opening up new possibilities for accessories

Apple unveiled new Lightning connectors and specs for Lightning receptacles that will soon be available for implementation in MFi accessories. The new Lightning receptacle, scheduled to start shipping next year, will allow accessory makers to build new types of accessories that include a port for Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector previously reserved for its own iOS devices (pictured above).

The Lightning receptacle will arrive alongside a new Lightning connector (C68) that accessory makers say is a slimmed down, low profile version of previous implementations that can be used in a wide range of accessories from docks to form fitting cases. Apple has several variations of its Lightning connectors for use in accessories. The only one consumers ever see is the C48 connector (pictured right), which is only available for use in cables. For other accessories, however, Apple previously required a much bulkier solution than the C48 that paired with other components to provide more than just power to an accessory. The new connector will provide features other than just power in a much tighter package (around the same size as C48) than previous solutions. The result will be an easier implementation of Lightning connectors into accessories with a slimmer overall design, but no change for consumers in terms of compatibility since it’s just the housing and not the actual tip of the connector that is changing.

Apple plans to begin shipping the new Lightning connector and receptacle to accessory makers in early 2015.

HTC’s Desire Eye wants to be the king of selfies | The Verge

Now HTC is announcing the Desire Eye, a mid-range phone that the company says will be the selfie phone to rule them all. It will be available from AT&T later this year at a price that’s yet to be determined. Where all other smartphones have their best cameras on the back of the phone, the Desire Eye has the same camera on the front as it does on the back. It’s a 13-megapixel camera — the highest resolution front-facing camera to date — and features autofocus, a dual LED flash on both the front and back of the phone, and 1080p video recording.

It has a 5.2-inch, 1080p display that looks great and has wide viewing angles. It has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor paired with 2GB of RAM as HTC’s flagship One M8. Its soft-touch plastic finish isn’t as premium as the all-metal chassis’ of the M8 or iPhone 6.

It’s IPX7 water resistant, so it can be dunked under a meter of water for up to 30 minutes without issue.

There’s a mode to take a picture with both the front and rear cameras at the same time, a la FrontBack, and an ultra-gimmicky mode that lets you insert yourself into a scene using both cameras. You can also merge your face with another person’s face to create a mutant selfie.

HTC Re camera Preview – CNET

The little periscope-shaped camera (right-angle flashlight and asthma inhaler are also suitable) is designed so that you stop watching and recording life through your smartphone’s screen and get in on the experience instead.

At the business end you have an f2.8 lens with an ultrawide 146-degree angle of view with a 1/2.3-inch 16-megapixel CMOS sensor behind it. That sensor is bigger than what you’d find in most smartphones, but average for point-and-shoot cameras and most POV/action cams.

The Re connects to your smartphone via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Launch the Re app (which will be available for Android and iOS later this year) and it initiates the connection process via Wi-Fi. Once connected you can control the camera, view and transfer content and change settings. With the app you can also activate a time-lapse mode so you can take a series of photos over a period of time (you set the frequency and length of time) and turn them into a movie.

Along with the tripod mount on the bottom you’ll find a Micro-USB port and a microSD card slot for storage. An 8GB card is included, but the camera supports cards up to 128GB.

Though HTC pitches the Re more as a lifestyle cam like Polaroid’s Cube than a rugged action cam for extreme sports, the body is waterproof to 1 meter (3.3 feet) for up to 30 minutes without an additional housing.

The HTC Re camera will be coming to the US first in late October/early November and the UK in November. It’ll cost $199 and somewhere around £160-£170 in the UK.

Google Patches Chrome for 159 Security Vulnerabilities

In total, Google is patching 159 security vulnerabilities in Chrome 38, which is one of the highest numbers of security-related fixes for any single browser ever released. Going a step further, Google noted that it also made “113 relatively minor fixes” that it found with its open-source Memory Sanitizer application. Other browser vendors likely might have also counted the 113 memory fixes in their security totals, so for argument’s sake, let’s say that Chrome 38 fixes 272 security related issues.

As part of the security updates, Google is paying out $75,633.70 in bug bounties to a number of security researchers for properly reporting issues to Google. The top award is a $27,633.70 award paid to Jüri Aedla for a vulnerability identified as CVE-2014-3188. That vulnerability could lead to remote code execution and is triggered by a number of bugs in the Google V8 JavaScript engine and the Inter-Process Communication (IPC) function.
