Hi Chris,

I spotted linux in the wild today at Sears. While the register was booting up it looked like the ubuntu boot screen with the 4 loading dots, but it was customized to show Sears instead of ubuntu. When the boot process had finished, a gtk dialog box popped up and I was able to snap a picture before it brought up the POS interface.

I also saw they were running desktop linux in the optical department. I only got a glimpse of it, but it looked like it might have been a really old customized version of kde.

Linus has released the 4.5 kernel.

Linux 4.6 Staging Has 1600+ Patches, ~400 Patches From Outreachy

So it looks like almost a quarter of the patches are from Outreachy, the group providing paid internships for women and other “underrepresented groups in tech” to work on the Linux kernel and related open-source projects.

XDG-App Is Becoming More Feature Complete

With today’s xdg-app 0.5 release, Alex considers this GNOME sandboxing tech to be feature complete for making it possible for third-parties to create and distribute applications that work across distributions. With this sandboxing, these packaged applications have minimal access to the host as needed for functionality.

Nmap 7.10 Security Scanner Adds Hundreds of OS/Version Fingerprints, New Scripts

“I’m pleased to announce the release of Nmap 7.10 with many great improvements,” says Fyodor in today’s announcement. “It’s got 12 new NSE scripts, hundreds of new OS/version fingerprints, and dozens if smaller improvements and bug fixes. And that’s not even counting the changes in Nmap 7.01, which we released in December 2015.”

netboot.xyz is a way to select various operating system installers or utilities from one place within the BIOS without the need of having to go retrieve the media to run the tool. iPXE is used to provide a user friendly menu from within the BIOS that lets you easily choose the OS you want along with any specific types of versions or bootable flags.

You can remote attach the ISO to servers, set it up as a rescue option in Grub, or even set up your home network to boot to it by default so that it’s always available.

Bug that can leak crypto keys just fixed in widely used OpenSSH

The vulnerability resides only in the version end users use to connect to servers and not in versions used by servers. A maliciously configured server could exploit it to obtain the contents of the connecting computer’s memory, including the private encryption key used for SSH connections. The bug is the result of code that enables an experimental roaming feature in OpenSSH versions 5.4 to 7.1

A major feature of the latest settings designs is a rethink of the GNOME Settings “shell” (that is, the overall framework of the settings application). Kodi 14.2 Helix – Release Candidate | Kodi

We are proud to announce the release candidate of Kodi 14.2 in which we further try to improve stability. As you may all know by now, we have a new name, a new logo, and a wide variety of new features, but underneath the new coat of paint remains the same software we all love. 14.2 will become the the second and final bug-fix release in the Helix range. As we have mentioned in our Kodi 14.0 release announcement, we will be releasing these extra releases to squash down any issues left after the first big release. Kodi 14.2 Release Candidate Available

Kodi 14.2 Helix is a stable bug-fix release over the existing Kodi 14 series. The 14.2 version is the second and final planned bug-fix release before Kodi 15. With today’s Kodi 14.2 RC there’s a handful of bug-fixes.

Windows 10 to make the Secure Boot alt-OS lock out a reality

Should this stand, we can envisage OEMs building machines that will offer no easy way to boot self-built operating systems, or indeed, any operating system that doesn’t have appropriate digital signatures. This doesn’t cut out Linux entirely—there have been some collaborations to provide Linux boot software with the “right” set of signatures, and these should continue to work—but it will make it a lot less easy.

The BQ Aquaris Ubuntu Phone’s Kernel Appears To Be A Toxic Mess

Carsten Munk of the Mer Project and Chief Research Engineer of Jolla has raised some concerns about the Linux kernel used by the BQ Aquaris E4.5 smart-phone running Ubuntu Touch. The kernel appears to have module source-code marked as confidential and other markings that would not comply with the GPLv2 license of the Linux kernel.

In a blog post out today, the Linux Android-based kernel used by Ubuntu on their first smart-phone is difficult to find the official source tree. When finding a kernel source tree for the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition Phone, Carsten was greeted by many “confidential and proprietary” statements from MediaTek, the company whose SoC is powering the phone. In other modules are confidential and proprietary licenses from other vendors too.

Some of you might have seen today’s blog post from Carsten Munk, from the
Mer project, where he pointed to conflicting comments in the kernel sources
of the Ubuntu phone for bq devices.

We are working with bq to understand the situation and planning to publish
the final E4.5 Ubuntu edition sources next week. We are confident that
these will address any questions raised by the preview source tree.

ownCloud Client 1.8 Has Been Officially Released with New Desktop Sharing Feature

“This release brings a new integration into the operating system file manager. With 1.8.0, there is a new context menu that opens a dialog to allow the user to create a public link on a synced file. This link can be forwarded to other users who get access to the file via ownCloud,” says Klaas Freitag in the official release announcement.

BioShock Infinite Now Available For Linux, Demands Binary Graphics Drivers

BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games. BioShock Infinite is powered by Unreal Engine 3 and was released for all other platforms in late 2013 while the Linux release is coming one and a half years later. This game used DirectX 11 on Windows while for porting it over to Linux is using eON for translating to OpenGL.

• The pfSense team has released 2.1.4, shortly after 2.1.3 – it’s mainly a security release
• Included within are eight security fixes, most of which are pfSense-specific
• OpenSSL, the WebUI and some packages all need to be patched (and there are instructions on how to do so)
• It also includes a large number of various other bug fixes
• Update all your routers!

DragonflyBSD’s pf gets SMP

• Dragonfly patches their old[er than even FreeBSD’s] pf to support multithreading in many areas
• Stemming from a user’s complaint, Matthew Dillon did his own work on pf to make it SMP-aware
• Altering your configuration‘s ruleset can also help speed things up, he found
• When will OpenBSD, the source of pf, finally do the same?

ChaCha usage and deployment

• A while back, we talked to djm about some cryptography changes in OpenBSD 5.5 and OpenSSH 6.5
• This article is sort of an interesting follow-up to that, showing which projects have adopted ChaCha20
• OpenSSH offers it as a stream cipher now, OpenBSD uses it for it’s random number generator, Google offers it in TLS for Chromium and some of their services and lots of other projects seem to be adopting it
• Both Google’s fork of OpenSSL and LibReSSL have upcoming implementations, while vanilla OpenSSL does not
• Unfortunately, this article has one mistake: FreeBSD does not use it – they still use the broken RC4 algorithm

• Responding to a post from Adam Langley, Ted Unangst talks a little more about how signify and pkg_add handle signatures
• In the past, the OpenBSD installer would pipe the output of ftp straight to tar, but then verify the SHA256 at the end – this had the advantage of not requiring any extra disk space, but raised some security concerns
• With signify, now everything is fully downloaded and verified before tar is even invoked
• The pkg_add utility works a little bit differently, but it’s also been improved in this area – details in the post

FreeBSD 9.3-RC2 is out

• As the -RELEASE inches closer, release candidate 2 is out and ready for testing
• Since the last one, it’s got some fixes for NIC drivers, the latest file and libmagic security fixes, some serial port workarounds and various other small things
• The updated bsdconfig will use pkgng style packages now too
• A lesser known fact: there are also premade virtual machine images you can use too

FreeBSD foundation\’s 2013 fundraising results

• The FreeBSD foundation finally counted all the money they made in 2013
• $768,562 from 1659 donors
• Nice little blog post from the team with a giant beastie picture
• \”We have already started our 2014 fundraising efforts. As of the end of January we are just under $40,000. Our goal is to raise $1,000,000. We are currently finalizing our 2014 budget. We plan to publish both our 2013 financial report and our 2014 budget soon.\”
• A special thanks to all the BSD Now listeners that contributed, the foundation was really glad that we sent some people their way (and they mentioned us on Facebook)

OpenSSH 6.5 released

• We mentioned the CFT last week, and it\’s finally here!
• New key exchange using elliptic-curve Diffie Hellman in Daniel Bernstein\’s Curve25519 (now the default when both clients support it)
• Ed25519 public keys are now available for host keys and user keys, considered more secure than DSA and ECDSA
• Funny side effect: if you ONLY enable ed25519 host keys, all the compromised Linux boxes can\’t even attempt to login
• New bcrypt private key type, 500,000,000 times harder to brute force
• Chacha20-poly1305 transport cipher that builds an encrypted and authenticated stream in one
• Portable version already in FreeBSD -CURRENT, and ports
• Lots more bugfixes and features, see the full release note or our interview with Damien
• Work has already started on 6.6, which can be used without OpenSSL!

• In 2000, MWL wrote an essay for linux.com about why he uses the BSD license: \”It’s actually stood up fairly well to the test of time, but it’s fourteen years old now.\”
• This is basically an updated version about why he uses the BSD license, in response to recent idiocy from Richard Stallman
• Very nice post that gives some history about Berkeley, the basics of the BSD-style licenses and their contrast to the GNU GPL
• Check out the full post if you\’re one of those people that gets into license arguments
• The takeaway is \”BSD is about making the world a better place. For everyone.\”

• Beaglebone Blacks are cheap little ARM devices similar to a Raspberry Pi
