NVIDIA Publishes Patches For Its Driver To Work With Wayland’s Weston

Following NVIDIA publishing a new Linux driver that supports Wayland and Mir alongside X11, a NVIDIA engineer followed through and posted patches of the EGL support changes needed by Wayland’s Weston compositor to support the new driver.

Nvidia Driver Meme

If I understand it correctly, it requires extra patches on wayland egl, which are currently under review on wayland maillist and they were just posted at the same time as the new driver was released.

Linux gaming is much healthier than Steam’s Hardware Survey implies

Here’s one obvious caveat: Steam’s user numbers are growing. So while Linux usage on the Steam Hardware Survey has declined from about 2 percent in March 2013 to 0.91 percent in February 2015, that smaller percentage is from a larger overall user base.

Red Star Linux Adds Secret Watermarks To Files

ERNW security analyst Florian Grunow says that North Korea’s Red Star Linux operating system is tracking users by tagging content with unique hidden tags. He particularizes that files including Word documents and JPEG images connected to but not necessarily executed in Red Star will have a tag introduced into its code that includes a number based on hardware serial numbers. Red Star’s development team seems to have created some quite interesting custom additions to Linux kernel and userspace, based on which Grunow has written a technical analysis.

PC gaming is expanding, Valve’s GDC 2015 announcements recap

Valve Controller Final

Valve attended GDC in full force this year and talked about a lot of stuff. Here’s everything they talked about it in one post.

More than 50 titles are highlighted, including three of PCWorld’s favorite games of 2014The Talos Principle, Transistor, _and our Game of the Year, _Wasteland 2—and a slew of other spectacular titles like Metro Redux, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Civilization: Beyond Earth, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, _and _Goat Simulator, among many others.

This drop to just over 1.0% is the lowest numbers we’ve seen for Linux’s representation on Steam in quite a number of months. However, it’s not a huge surprise.

With the Vulkan API still in flux and not finalized until later this year, Valve has been developing their own Intel GPU reference driver for Vulkan to help early adopters boot-strap their code. Valve said during their presentation today at GDC2015 that this Intel Linux driver will be open-sourced, but they haven’t provided a time-frame for doing so.

VMware alleged to have violated Linux’s open source license for years

Christoph Hellwig

Linux kernel developer Christoph Hellwig filed the suit in the district court of Hamburg, Germany with funding from the nonprofit Software Freedom Conservancy, which works to “promote, improve, develop, and defend” free and open source software. The case centers on “a combined work that VMware allegedly created by combining their own code (‘vmkernel’) with portions of Linux’s code, which was licensed only under GPLv2,” _the group said in an FAQ describing the lawsuit._

Software Freedom Conservancy

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. This is the regretful but necessary next step in both Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply properly with the terms of the GPLv2, the license of Linux and many other Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

No reboot patching comes to Linux 4.0

Living patching in Linux 4.0

At the Linux Plumbers Conference in October 2014, the two groups got together and started work on a way to _patch Linux without rebooting that combines the best of both programs. Essentially, what they ended up doing was putting both kpatch and kGraft in the 4.0 Linux kernel._

Your Own Linux Chat Server

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Prosody is a modern flexible communications server for Jabber/XMPP written in Lua. It aims to be easy to set up and configure, and light on resources.

In the midst of the major press blitz surrounding its annual I/O Conference, Google dropped some unfortunate news about its instant messaging plans. In several places around the web, the company is replacing the existing “Talk” platform with a new one called “Hangouts” that sharply diminishes support for the open messaging protocol known as XMPP (or sometimes informally Jabber), and also removes the option to disable the archiving of all chat communications. These changes represent a switch from open protocols to proprietary ones, and a clear step backward for many users.

I setup a Raspberry Pi Model B as an XMPP server running MUC.

Pros:

  • Group video calling
  • Combine multiple Google Accounts, and AIM, MSN, Yahoo, etc.
  • Automatic and easy to use Encryption
  • Built in MP3 Recording
  • Nice sounds presets

Cons:

  • Stability is a bit hit and miss

  • Sharing Desktop seems to be unreliable (Google Hangouts hands down wins here).

  • Does not take much freeze video, so don’t really touch much after a call is in place.

  • Limited by constraints of 3rd party networks

Matt’s Howto:

Pavucontrol: The best way to utilize PulseAudio without any frustration, running pavucontrol will allow you to use software like Jitsi, Empathy or Skype. To install pavucontrol, simply run
sudo apt-get install pavucontrol from a terminal window.

Now once I installed it on the Wild Dog PC from System76.com, I was immediately able to run the software, then jump over to my Jitsi installation, place a call to Chris and once there, toggle over to the Recording tab of the pavucontrol user interface. Now since I had a USB headset plugged in, I needed PulseAudio to make sure that Jitsi remembered that I wanted to use the headset and not the soundcard for my microphone needs. With the default volume controls under Ubuntu, this isn’t possible as setting up the input device doesn’t work on a per-application basis the way that pavucontrol does.

Some of the Great Feedback:

Matt’s Howto:

Jitsi: Works great with Ubuntu on our Wild Dog PC from System76.com, plus it will allow you a viable alternative to have video chat conversations with those using OS X and Windows. All three platforms support screen sharing. Linux version only shows the incoming video, previewing your own video while in a call, isn’t working. Video preview does however, work great on the other platforms. The really neat part is with a HD webcam, you can actually video chat in full HD quality video.

We found that setting up jabber accounts, using Gmail credincials, provided success with Jitsi. GoogleTalk isn’t going to give you video chat, you need to take that Google login and use it in the jabber account area instead.

All of this good stuff aside, it should be noted that this software hasn’t been updated in sometime. So it could break sometime down the road. Still, for those who don’t distro hop much, this is a great alternative to Skype. Install via https://jitsi.org/index.php/Main/Download
