Plasma 5.5 Review

Plasma 5.5 features updates to the Breeze theme, there is an expanded feature set in the application launcher, new Plasma Applets, OpenGL ES support has been restored in Kwin, and there is much greater Wayland support. With Plasma 5.5 comes basic support for the Wayland session without depending upon X11/XWayland. However, this KDE Wayland support isn’t yet ready for casual Linux desktop users

digiKam 5.0.0-beta2 is released

Linux Mint 17.3 Screenshot

This release marks almost complete port of the application to Qt5 and KF5 API. All Qt4/KDE4 code has been removed and many parts have been re-written, reviewed, and tested. Porting to Qt5 required a lot of work, as many important APIs had to be changed or replaced by new ones.

In addition to code porting, we introduced several changes and optimizations, especially regarding dependencies on the KDE project. Although digiKam is still a KDE desktop application, it now uses many Qt dependencies instead of KDE dependencies. This simplifies the porting job on other operating systems, code maintenance, while reducing sensitivity of API changes from KDE project.

Kdenlive 15.12, what to expect

kdenlive-15-12 screenshot

We have been working hard over the past months to improve stability, polish the interface and continue our big code cleanup. Kdenlive 15.12.0 will be released next week, and here are some of the changes you will get with this new version:

New Features

We managed to add a few nice features. here are a few of them:

  • Timeline effects and Bin effects can be temporarily disabled and re-enabled in 2 clicks
  • A basic implementation of a copy / paste feature has been added, which allows you to save a part of your timeline and import it later inside another project with all effects and transitions being editable
  • Track transparency: a simple click allows you to enable / disable transparency for a given track
  • Icons now automatically adapt their color scheme (light or dark) to the UI theme
  • More infos on the features should hopefully be published soon…s/SYjiQdP2QDw

Krita

The tenth bugfix release already! There are quite a few fixes, though the focus these days is really on getting Krita 3.0 ready for the first alpha release. We’ve also got a fix by a new contributor, Nicholas LaPointe!

ksuperkey allows you to open the application launcher in KDE Plasma Desktop using the Super key (also known as the ‘Windows key’). Unlike other solutions, it will not affect your current keyboard shortcuts, as the Super key will still act as a modifier when held down.

Note that ksuperkey does not depend on any specific desktop environment and should work fine on KDE Plasma 4, Plasma 5, GNOME Shell, Unity, Xfce, LXDE, etc.

Mozilla Will Stop Developing And Selling Firefox OS Smartphones

Linux Mint 17.3 Screenshot

Farewell Firefox OS smartphones. Mozilla today announced an end to its smartphone experiment, and said that it would stop developing and selling Firefox OS smartphones. It will continue to experiment on how it might work on other connected devices and Internet of Things networks.

The announcement was made earlier today at Mozilla’s developer event in Orlando, “Mozlando“, and several people were tweeting the basics of the news. Now Mozilla has provided us with a full statement from Ari Jaaksi, Mozilla’s SVP of Connected Devices.

“We are proud of the benefits Firefox OS added to the Web platform and will continue to experiment with the user experience across connected devices. We will build everything we do as a genuine open source project, focused on user experience first and build tools to enable the ecosystem to grow.

Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs. However, we weren’t able to offer the best user experience possible and so we will stop offering Firefox OS smartphones through carrier channels.

We’ll share more on our work and new experiments across connected devices soon.”

  • Firefox OS was first unveiled in 2013, with the aim of targeting the developing world and late adopters with low-cost handsets.

Fedora 20 Heisenbug Review:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

– Fedora Specs: –

  • Kernel 3.12.5 (updated during review from 3.11)
  • GNOME 3.10
  • KDE Plasma Workspaces 4.11
  • Cinnamon 2.0
  • ARM as a Primary Architecture
  • No Syslog – systemd journal now takes the place as the default logging.
  • No Default Sendmail – Most Fedora users don’t require an MTA.

– Cool Fedora Tools: –

A simple GNOME 3 application to access remote or virtual systems. It is based on a design from Jon McCann and Jakub Steiner.

The new tool, named gnome-software, is designed from the beginning for installing applications. It will present applications with information that is relevant to users (icons, screenshots, reviews, descriptions, ratings,…) instead of information that is relevant for packagers (dependencies, package size, file lists,…).

The Fedora 20 release coincides with Fedora’s tenth anniversary. The first Fedora release (then called Fedora Core 1) came out on November 6, 2003

– Living with Fedora: –

Korora is a Fedora Remix that aims to make Linux easier for new users, while still being useful for experts. We provide a complete, easy to use computing system that “just works” out of the box.

Fedora Utils lets you install codecs and additional software that Fedora doesn’t want to ship, like MP3 codecs, Adobe Flash, Oracle Java etc. It can also fix problems, tweak and cleanup your system, show system information and much more with just few clicks.

  • Despite being 10 years old, Fedora feels modern and devioid of technical debt (looking at you Ubuntu & openSUSE). That can be good and bad. Sometimes that technical debt is part of the distro’s legacy, ie YaST.

  • Yum Extender

The next generation of Yum Extender, using Python3, Gtk3 and yum-daemon

Although Fedora 20 works out of the box but still lack some necessary functionality for obvious reasons. Here is a post install step by step guide for Fedora 20.

  • Show’s might not be live, but we have pre-recorded episode for release at their regular times.

  • Thank you to everyone in the community, and to those of you who helped in a capacity from moderator, to developer. We’re a small team at JB, but because of real group effort collectively we all accomplish something bigger than you’d think possible.

  • Thank you to everyone in the community who contributed financially to the network, or bought a shirt. Your help not only gives us peace of mind during the holidays, but changed the game from “disaster sustainability mode” but to continuing our plans for the new studio build. Matt’s Howto:

The bulk of the howto is going to be in the video. However, there are some things you need access to.

1) Kdenlive – use this Ubuntu PPA if you’re using Ubuntu 11.10.
In a terminal window:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/kdenlive-release
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kdenlive

2) When you first run Kdenlive, it’s likely going to give you some first run errors, regarding ML, cancel instead of closing the app (so the first run wizard runs again later).
If running Ubuntu 11.10 and you’ve added the PPA, you will want to add/update the following.

From Synaptic, search for libmlt++3 – if it’s showing you have anything older than version 0.7.6, update the package. Also double check that libmlt-data and libmlt4 are installed.

Now you can run kdenlive again and it will show everything is working perfectly.

3) To run your webcam successfully in Google Plus hangouts, make sure your webcam is plugged in (directly, no hubs). Open up a Google Plus hangout without joining it. Visit “check settings”. If the webcam is working, great. If it’s not, then close the browser and install WebcamStudio from the latest Deb package. It will installed either via Gdebi or from the Software Center automatically.

3a) If you want/need to run WebcamStudio, perhaps because your webcam wasn’t detected in Firefox or Chrome, start the software, follow along with the video to get the software running with your webcam.

4) Since your end goal is to record Google Plus hangouts as a video, you will need to install the screen recording software known as Kazam.
In a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kazam-team/stable-series
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kazam

5) Open the Kazam software as I showed you in the video and confirm your settings and begin recording. To stop recording once you’ve started, look to the upper right near the network settings and clock, right click on the Kazam widget and stop recording from there. Remember: Do not export to a video editor directly as the video file will not be saved normally. Choose to save it for later instead.

6) With Kazam recording and WebcamStudio using your webcam, open a browser with the Google Video chat plugin installed, browse to Google Plus, then start a hangout.

7) Once the hangout is finished, close the hangout, stop Kazam, save the file, import it into Kdenlive. Drag the video into the timeline, cut the clip as to make sure the area you wish to obscure is covered. Tip: When moving the obscure box corners, understand that it’s very sensitive and getting the cursor into position takes a steady hand. So patience is critical.

8) Save the project, export it as you see fit.
