Amazon announces massive Kindle refresh including new ‘Kindle Voyage’ and $99 Kindle Fire HD tablet | 9to5Google

Following a big day of Apple news, Kindle has unleashed a massive refresh of its Kindle lines, including three refreshed Kindles and—interestingly—one completely new Kindle model. The lineup includes the company’s new flagship e-reader dubbed Kindle Voyage, a new entry-level Kindle that now packs a touch screen, an updated Kindle Fire HDX, and a new Kindle Fire HD, which is starting at just $99.

The Kindle Voyage, which now sits at the top of the lineup, sports a brand new 6-inch e-ink display and what the company is calling “Pagepress,” which replaces the previous hardware buttons and allows you to change pages by simply squeezing on the bezel around the screen. In terms of dimensions, the device comes in at an impressive 7.6 mm thin and weighs in at right around 6.4 ounces. The device starts at $199, and that’s the version that ships with ads and lacks 3G.

Additionally, Amazon also announced the new bottom-of-the-line Kindle, which now comes standard with a touch screen as well as a processor that’s supposedly around 20 percent faster than the previous entry level model. This device will be the most affordable of the bunch, coming in at $79 and up ($99 if you want to ditch the “special offers”).

Amazon releases Fire OS 4: Adds Firefly to tablets, integrates cloud | ZDNet

  • Fire OS 4 lands with deeper cloud integration, an updated user interface, and profiles for multiple accounts — including individualized preferences for email, social, and settings.

  • Based on Android 4.4 KitKat, Amazon built Fire OS 4 on top us. (Just in time for L to ship soon)

  • Better battery life with Smart Suspend: Amazon touted Smart Suspend as the new way to save battery life. It sets up a device-specific profile over time to proactively turn off wireless functionality, delivering up to 25 percent more battery life, Amazon says.

  • Advanced Streaming and Prediction: Dubbed “ASAP,” devices running Fire OS 4 can now predict which movies and TV content you may want to watch next, while caching them in the background.

  • Free cloud-based photo storage: Amazon said Fire OS 4 users now have free and “unlimited” photo storage — including full-resolution snaps — in Amazon’s cloud. Photos are uploaded wirelessly.

Apple Confirms HealthKit Bug, Promises Fix by End of September – Mac Rumors

While details on the issue are still unknown, Apple has confirmed to Tim Bradshaw of Financial Times that it has discovered a “bug” in HealthKit that will require a software update to fix. Unfortunately, Apple is not necessarily promising an immediate turnaround on the fix, saying only that the company is aiming to “have HealthKit apps available by the end of the month”.

Apple will no longer unlock most iPhones, iPads for police, even with search warrants – The Washington Post

The key is the encryption that Apple mobile devices automatically put in place when a user selects a passcode, making it difficult for anyone who lacks that passcode to access the information within, including photos, e-mails and recordings. Apple once kept possession of encryption keys that unlocked devices for legally binding police requests, but will no longer do so for iOS 8, it said in a new guide for law enforcement.

“Unlike our competitors, Apple cannot bypass your passcode and therefore cannot access this data,” Apple said on its Web site. “So it’s not technically feasible for us to respond to government warrants for the extraction of this data from devices in their possession running iOS 8.”

Digia spins off Qt as subsidiary · LinuxGizmos.com

Digia has spun off a subsidiary called “The Qt Company” to unify Qt’s commercial and open source efforts, and debuted a low-cost plan for mobile developers.

Now Qt is its own company, or at least a wholly owned subsidiary under Digia. Finland-based Digia has largely been involved with the commercial versions of Qt since it acquired the platform from Nokia in 2012, but it has also sponsored the community Qt Project as a relatively separate project. Now, both efforts are being unified “under one roof” at The Qt Company and the new QT.io website, says Digia. Meanwhile, Digia will focus on its larger enterprise software business.

According to Qt, the number of Qt developers has grown “exponentially” to about 800,000, spurred on by the 2013 Qt 5.2 release, which added Qt for Android and iOS ports. Within six weeks, Qt 5.2 was downloaded 500,000 times, and it reached one million downloads only four months after the release. Another one million downloads have occurred since the July release of Qt 5.3, says the company.

DOJ Proposal Would Let FBI Hack Into Computers Overseas With Little Oversight | Techdirt

JustSecurity, alerts us to a rather frightening proposal from the Justice Department that would enable law enforcement to hack into the computers of people who are trying to be anonymous online. At issue is that current rules basically would extend the powers granted for terrorism investigations to everyday criminal investigations, concerning specifically the DOJ/FBI’s ability to hack into computers. In the past, judges could issue warrants for such computer hacking if the target was known to be located in the same district. But the proposed change would wipe out that limitation, and basically give the DOJ/FBI the power to get approval for hacking into a much broader range of computers. Without the geographical limitation, there’s concern about just how broadly this new power would be (ab)used.

Under the DOJ’s proposal, unilateral state action will be the rule, not the exception, in the event an anonymous target “prove[s] to be outside the United States.” The reason is simple: without knowing the target location before the fact, there is no way to provide notice (or obtain consent from) a host country until after its sovereignty has been encroached.

iPhone 6 Plus review | The Verge

I can’t see myself ever using my iPad mini again after having the 6 Plus, and it’s getting harder and harder to justify pulling out my iPad Air. With the right software changes, I could basically use an iPhone 6 Plus all day long, for everything from sending messages to editing documents to watching videos. A do-everything phone like the 6 Plus would eventually allow Apple to push the iPad even further towards becoming the true laptop replacement it was always meant to be.

We’re going to need bigger hands.

t I have no desire to use an iPhone 6 Plus as my personal phone. I ordered an iPhone 6 for my own use. And if the iPhone 6 Plus were the only new iPhone this year, I probably would have stuck with the iPhone 5S.

Round two of Microsoft layoffs coming September 18: Sources | ZDNet

Microsoft cut 13,000 employees total in the first wave back in July. That wave included some, but not all, of the former Nokia employees, my contacts say. It also included employees in the Operating Systems Group and just about every other group across the company. Microsoft also is planning to reduce its dependency on “contingent” (non full-time) employees by 20 percent as part of its realignment.

I am not sure how many will be cut in this week’s round, which I’ve heard will be announced internally this Thursday, September 18. But I do hear that the second round of cuts will span across almost every group at the company. I’ve also heard there still will be more cuts happening as part of the original 18,000 total at further dates in the future.

Docker Raises $40M, Plans New Enterprise Tool for 2015

Docker Inc., the lead commercial sponsor behind the open-source Docker container technology, today announced that it has closed a $40 million Series C round of funding. The new round of funding comes on the heels of the Docker 1.0 release and the emergence of a commercial ecosystem around the container virtualization technology.

The Series C round of funding is the second funding event for Docker in 2014. In January, Docker announced a $15 million funding round.

The latest funding round brings Dockers’ total funding since its founding to $66 million, CEO Ben Golub said, adding that Docker has only now just begun spending the Series A funding money and is starting to tap into the Series B funds. “We closed the Series C pre-emptively, so we would have a full powder keg to go after the market opportunity,” G

Xiaomi phones send user data to remote servers: F-Secure

At first, F-Secure did not configure an Mi Cloud (Xiaomi’s equivalent of Apple’s iCloud that stores user data) account and simply inserted a sim card, connected the phone to Wi-Fi, turned on GPS, added a contact and made and received a call and exchanged messages. The company found that the phone number of contacts added to the phone book and from SMS messages received were also forwarded. The phone follows a similar pattern even when one configures an Mi Cloud account.

“Next we connected to and logged into Mi Cloud, the iCloud-like service from Xiaomi. Then we repeated the same test steps as before. This time, the IMSI details were sent to api.account.xiaomi.com, as well as the IMEI and phone number,” writes F-Secure in its blog.

Xiaomi Makes its iMessage-Like Service Optional

Xiaomi is making the cloud messaging service that is automatically activated on its devices optional for user

These concerns refer to the MIUI Cloud Messaging service described above. As we believe it is our top priority to protect user data and privacy, we have decided to make MIUI Cloud Messaging an opt-in service and no longer automatically activate users. We have scheduled an OTA system update for today (Aug 10th) to implement this change.

After the upgrade, new users or users who factory reset their devices can enable the service by visiting “Settings > Mi Cloud > Cloud Messaging” from their home screen or “Settings > Cloud Messaging” inside the Messaging app — these are also the places where users can turn off Cloud Messaging.

Amazon wants you to ask Hachette’s CEO for lower e-book prices

Amazon Gets Increasingly Nervous

John Scalzi on Amazon/Hachette

John Scalzi:

Amazon is not your friend. Neither is any other corporation. It and they do what they do for their own interest and are more than willing to try to make you try believe that what they do for their own benefit is in fact for yours. It’s not. In this particular case, this is not about readers or authors or anyone else but Amazon wanting eBooks capped at $9.99 for its own purposes. It should stop pretending that this is about anything other than that. Readers, authors, and everyone else should stop pretending it’s about anything other than that, too.

Disney Disc Preorders Disappear From Amazon

Hacker Redirects Traffic From 19 Internet Providers to Steal Bitcoins

Researchers at Dell’s SecureWorks security division say they’ve uncovered a series of incidents in which a bitcoin thief redirected a portion of online traffic from no less than 19 Internet service providers, including data from the networks of Amazon and other hosting services like DigitalOcean and OVH, with the goal of stealing cryptocurrency from a group of bitcoin users.

Though each redirection lasted just 30 second or so, the thief was able to perform the attack 22 times, each time hijacking and gaining control of the processing power of a group of bitcoin miners, the users who expend processing power to add new coins to the currency’s network.

The attacker specifically targeted a collection of bitcoin mining “pools”

The redirection technique tricked the pools’ participants into continuing to devote their processors to bitcoin mining while allowing the hacker to keep the proceeds. At its peak, according to the researchers’ measurements, the hacker’s scam was pocketing a flow of bitcoins and other digital currencies including dogecoin and worldcoin worth close to $9,000 a day.

The Dell researchers believe the bitcoin thief used a technique called BGP hijacking, which exploits the so-called border gateway protocol, the routing instructions that direct traffic at the connection points between the Internet’s largest networks. The hacker took advantage of a staff user account at a Canadian internet service provider to periodically broadcast a spoofed command that redirected traffic from other ISPs, starting in February and continuing through May of of this year.

In fact, the BGP bitcoin-stealing exploits represent less of a new vulnerability in bitcoin than the persistent fragility of the internet itself, Dell’s researchers say. If one Canadian ISP can be used to redirect large flows of the Internet to steal a pile of cryptocurrency, other attackers could just as easily steal massive drifts of Internet data for espionage or pure disruption. The Dell researchers suggest that companies set up monitoring through a service like BGPmon, which can detect BGP hijacking attacks. B

Amazon is making a box for your living room, and this is what its game controller looks like

It\’s suggested that the unnamed box will run a fork of the Android OS, just like Amazon\’s Kindle Fire line of tablets. It\’s likely that Amazon will attempt to leverage its large content offerings with the launch of a set-top box.

Rails Is A Ghetto

I\’ve more or less kept my mouth shut about some of the dumb and plain evil
