During the early phase of the 0.10.x series we may also backport minor features, but we guarantee backwards compatibility,” said Alexander Larsson.

I’ll be starting the weekly round-up posts again now that the release is out and 18.04 is getting under way. At this early stage in the development cycle we’re spending a week or so tidying up the loose ends from 17.10, SRUing the important fixes that we’ve found, getting ready to sync new packages from Debian, and generally doing the groundwork to give us a clear run at 18.04. As you know, 18.04 will be an LTS release and so we will be focusing on stability and reliability this cycle, as well as a few new features. I’ll give a more detailed view into 18.04 in the coming weeks.

This thread serves to inquire the community if there would be significant interest in the adoption and/or continuation of Unity 7. I very much welcome feedback from every member on this matter, and would be absolutely thrilled if we found a way to move forward with this!

Earlier this year I made the conscious decision to remove all Internet service from my home. It ended up being the best productivity decision I’ve ever made.

Now when I’m on the Internet, it has a purpose—it is a tool I use to enhance my life. Sure, sometimes I log on to watch some funny videos or laugh at memes, but I go to the Internet with the intention of doing these things.

The Companies That Support Linux and Open Source: Pinterest | Linux.com

Pinterest — “the world’s catalog of ideas” — is built on open source, according to Jon Parise, technical architecture lead and open source program lead at the company. In this interview, Parise explains how adopting open source has changed the company and helped the company’s engineers design software that is more modular, reusable, and well-documented from the outset.

Pinterest is built on open source. From our first lines of Django code over six years ago to the release of Rocksplicator, our latest open source project, we’ve directly benefited from open source projects and the supportive communities surrounding them. In turn, we’ve made significant contributions to the open source technologies we use and have pushed the limits of technologies like HBase. Internally, open source is part of a product cycle. We frequently open source the technologies we build as both a way to give back to communities and because it’s the right thing to do.

Why Slack is inappropriate for open source communications

In the context of an open source project, Slack, HipChat, Gitter, etc, provide a forum for advocacy, gossip, informal discussion, and support. My complaints start when Slack and friends are promoted as the recommended way to communicate with the project.

  • Slack, et al, are paid services with closed memberships.

  • Slack, et al, are based on synchronous communication, which discriminate against those who do not or can not take part of the conversation in real time.

Instead of closed, synchronous, systems I recommend open source projects stick to asynchronous communication tools that leave a publicly linkable, searchable, url. The tools that fit this requirement best are; mailing list, issue trackers, and forums.

Ubuntu Unity is dead: Desktop will switch back to GNOME next year

Six years after making Unity the default user interface on Ubuntu desktops, Canonical is giving up on the project and will switch the default Ubuntu desktop back to GNOME next year. Canonical is also ending development of Ubuntu software for phones and tablets, spelling doom for the goal of creating a converged experience with phones acting as desktops when docked with the right equipment.

“Work on the phone and tablet is also ending, the whole convergence story, really,” Hall said. “The desktop will continue, but like it was in the pre-Unity days where we took what upstream [developers] designed and developed.”

By switching to GNOME, Canonical is also giving up on Mir and moving to the Wayland display server, another contender for replacing the X window system. Given the separate development paths of Mir and Wayland, “we have no real choice but to use Wayland when Ubuntu switches to GNOME by default,” Hall told Ars. “Using Mir simply isn’t an option we have.”

How to decided on a distro.

Ever since my upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 to 16.10 borked my laptop I’ve been distro hopping like crazy and after the last rebuild today I have to ask: how the devil did you decide on a distro to stick with?
I been using Ubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Solus, Elementary, Fedora, OpenSuse, and Antegos. But I can’t seem to pick on to stick with for more than a few weeks. Am I insane?

Taking a stand against unofficial Ubuntu images

We are currently in dispute with a European cloud provider which has breached its contract and is publishing insecure, broken images of Ubuntu despite many months of coaxing to do it properly. The home-grown images on the cloud, VPS and bare metal services of this provider disable fundamental security mechanisms and modify the system in ways that are unsupportable. They are likely to behave unpredictably on update in weirdly creative and mysterious ways

The appropriate means to handle this kind of issue is trademark law. If someone claims that something is Ubuntu when it isn’t, that’s probably an infringement of the trademark and it’s entirely reasonable for the trademark owner to take action to protect the value associated with their trademark. But Canonical’s _IP policy_goes much further than that – it can be interpreted as meaning[1] that you can’t distribute works based on Ubuntu without paying Canonical for the privilege

Any redistribution of modified versions of Ubuntu must be approved, certified or provided by Canonical if you are going to associate it with the Trademarks. Otherwise you must remove and replace the Trademarks and will need to recompile the source code to create your own binaries. This does not affect your rights under any open source licence applicable to any of the components of Ubuntu. If you need us to approve, certify or provide modified versions for redistribution you will require a licence agreement from Canonical, for which you may be required to pay. For further information, please contact us (as set out below).

This isnt really a question but a prediction that could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. With MS adding in support for bash etc in win 10 and then creating .net sdk etc for linux which allows powershell etc to run. Do you think as I do that MS may be looking at moving Win 10 (No Server editions of their products only their desktop/laptop/mobile OS) to a linux distro and then having MS packages like .net etc running on top. This would mean they dont have to support patch etc a desktop distro that takes up alot of their time and money but basically get the open source community to do that for them. Obviously this wont happen in next 5 years maybe not even for a while after that for a while. But I do think it may be something they looking into… PS Send my regards to Chris and the team for a great show(s). Cheers

QNAP TS-453A 8G Virtualization

Imgur

Virtualization Station allows you to host virtual machines (VM) on the TS-453A, and access them via a web browser or VNC. Virtualization Station supports multiple operating systems, fast VM creation, VM backup & restoration, VM import/export, snapshot, and Device Management for centrally managing VM. Virtualization Station uses SDN (Software-defined Networks) and allows the TS-453A and VMs to share the same LAN port. No longer constrained by physical network performance, high-speed Virtual Switches greatly increases data transfer between VMs as well as between VMs and NAS through the internal interface. You can also download VMs on demand from online VM markets and import them to the TS-453A without any complex procedures.

The TS-453A also features the game-changing container technology for server virtualization. QNAP Container Station exclusively integrates LXC and Docker(r) lightweight virtualization technologies, allowing you to operate multiple isolated Linux(r) systems on the TS-453A as well as download apps from the built-in Docker Hub Registry(r)

Some Disappointed Apple Fans Are Moving To Ubuntu Linux

Thanks to technology enthusiasts’ underwhelming response to Apple’s October event, a big flock of users turned to the famed Ubuntu laptop seller System76 whose website witnessed about 4-times more traffic than usual. As a result, System76 needed to upgrade the servers to keep up. It could be seen as a sign that users are looking at Linux machines as Mac-alternatives.

As my father is soon looking at retirement he is going to lose access his work provided laptop. He has asked me for recommendations on a new machine. I’m considering the possibility of moving him over to Linux. He is technologically competent and not afraid of trying something new but is still more comfortable going with a well-known manufacturer. Immediately my first thought was the Dell XPS 13 as he is familiar with them and they also offer Linux support out of the box which is a huge plus as I can purchase the Windows version so that knows he has the option to fallback to Windows if he ends up not liking Linux. However, after looking into the device it appears that these machines are still affected by Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) that can’t be disabled and coil whine issues. Outside of System76 machines is the XPS 13 still the go-to Linux laptop? Do you have any better recommendations? Thanks.

Plasma 5.8 Review

KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS Released, This Is What’s New

Plasma 5.8 LTS “marks the point where the developers and designers are happy to recommend Plasma for the widest possible audience be they enterprise or non-techy home users,” project lead Jonathan Riddell says.

Modifier-only shortcuts, a highly requested functionality for the Plasma desktop, has been added. This allows you to launch an application by pressing a Meta key. The inclusion of Wayland to the Plasma desktop has facilitated the addition of this feature which has also been backported the X11.

Another notable feature is the support for right-to-left scripts like Urdu, Hebrew, etc. The widget explorer, window switcher, activity manager can be seen on the right side of the screen for such languages.

Wayland debuted on Plasma with 5.4 release. Since then, it has been continuously improved for stability and features. In the Plasma 5.8 LTS, a lot of work has been done on Wayland which now supports the GTK+ toolkit. The support for multitouch gestures and touchscreen devices has been enhanced, although, no default gestures are actually present as of now. The X11 and Wayland-based applications can now have a shared clipboard.

Review Notes
  • Now if you don’t recall KDE Neon is not a distro per sey, rather it’s a great way to play with KDE. Basically you get the Ubuntu base and the KDE Plasma Desktop and that’s it! Everything NOT KDE related is maintained by Canonical/Ubuntu. KDE Neon only cares about KDE’s stack.

  • They provide downloads to make initial setup easier for users. You could just do minimal install of Ubuntu and then install Neon PPA to essentially get the same thing.

  • They did however fix the wifi bug that some users experienced with Kubuntu so neon WILL fix other things if they need to but basically they “just care about KDE”

  • If you need more infomation go back and take a look at LAS409 where Chris and I deep dive into what exactly is Neon

  • The project leaders have said “If your last dalliance with a KDE desktop was somewhere south of now it may be time to ‘re+assess’, the team say. “Plasma is simple by default, powerful when needed.“ Well as it turns out my last experience with KDE was somewhere south of now so it’s high time we take a looksee.

  • Neon makes sure that KDE’s entire stack is compatible with Ubuntu including updates. Every new release of KDE’s stack will be managed in Neon so if someone wants Ubuntu + KDE then Neon will always be up to date where as Kubuntu has the whole 6 months hold back still.

  • 5.7 to 5.8 is mostly a polish release but a few things stand out for improvements

  • 5.8 offers a very cohesive design, their tag line is “everything is designed to match the KDE experience, from startup to shutdown.” The breeze theme makes sure that everything looks amazing

  • Right off the bat the fact that it’s an 18 month support cycle has me hooked.

  • The nice thing I noticed about Plasma does colour scheme independent of theme. As such you can have any theme with any color scheme. As of the most recent versions of plasma this includes the colours in Icon’s of the default icon theme.

  • I’ve always said there are a few things that make or break a distro for me. Firefox, Thunderbird, Telegram a terminal application and the ability to launch applications with the super key. Up until now we’ve had to rely on the super+space to launch an application. I was pleased to learn that launching Telegram is now as simple as superkey and typing it. Additionally unlike Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity I can launch Telegram immediately after installing it. I don’t need to reboot.

  • Their package manager formally Moo On but now branded as Discover is a great package manager. Muon or Discover is an advanced program with a graphical program that as it’s name obviously implies will allow you to install and remove software. Additionally It will automatically notify you for updates (in the lower right hand corner), but you can use it at anytime to install new package

  • Michael Tunnel our producer who uses this distro as his daily driver and has been invaluable to my review is pretty excited about something that seems like it’s just a minor improvement. The virtual desktop switcher applet now has an option to show only the current screen in multi+screen setups. This seemingly small improvement is great for him because it makes it easier to create the GNOME workflow in Plasma”

  • Last thing to note is the improved global shortcuts. Global shortcuts configuration has been simplified and global shortcuts can now be configured to jump to specific tasks within an application via jump list functionality.

X crash during Fedora update when system has hybrid graphics and systemd-udev is in update

Here’s the short version: especially if your system has hybrid graphics (that is, it has an Intel video adapter and also an AMD or NVIDIA one, and it’s supposed to switch to the most appropriate one for what you’re currently doing — NVIDIA calls this ‘Optimus’), DON’T UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM BY RUNNING DNF FROM THE DESKTOP. (Also if you have multiple graphics adapters that aren’t strictly ‘hybrid graphics’; the bug affects any case with multiple graphics adapters).

Piracy fighters battle Kodi ‘epidemic’ – BBC News

“This is becoming an epidemic,” Kieron Sharp, director general of Fact, told the BBC.

“If you are not paying for Sky, BT or one of the pay-TV providers for your subscription channels, you are clearly in possession of an illegal box.”

The UK’s IP Crime Report 2015/16 has just been published, revealing infringement trends gathered from both governmental and private anti-piracy groups. This year in the online piracy sector IPTV/Kodi, torrent sites and stream ripping are seen as the main threats.

Meanwhile, the report reveals that pirating Internet subscribers will be receiving warning letters before the end of the year.

Subject: Heads up on QNAP before you Dive in

Message: Hi Chris ‘n’ Noah

Just listened to this week’s LAS and my ears pricked up when I heard your enthusiasm for an upcoming QNAP device you are getting for review. Thought I would drop you a line with my experience of using their kit. We have three of their rackmount TS series NAS units (2 x 8 disk and 1 x 4 disk devices). We used them for relatively inexpensive archive storage as well as an onsite backup device and an off-site replication copy. Primary storage is on DELL iSCSI SANs.

We used them with 6TB WD Reds until recently after losing data on them for around the 20th time
Quite regularly the volumes would drop offline despite the disks showing as healthy. Typically QNAP support would log into the devices and run an FSCK repair which would take several days. Sometimes this would work and sometimes it wouldn’t, requiring us to completely rebuild the units and restore data to them.
Earlier this year we replaced the first unit with a thrown together FreeNas box. We noticed an instant improvement in performance and it hasn’t faltered once. We have since replaced the other two backup devices with similar improvements and have just replaced one of the Dell iSCSI SANs with a FreeNas box which out-performs the Dell with much cheaper disks.
My current project I have just built a Proxmox cluster with a full SSD FreeNas and 10Gbe iSCSI interconnects. It boots to a Windows 2012 server desktop in 2 seconds! (Not my choice of OS but obviously it does Linux really well too).

Hope my experience of QNAP will encourage you to be cautious with any data you trust them with.

Keep up the sterling work!
Gordon

Lsyncd watches a local directory trees event monitor interface (inotify or fsevents). Lsyncd is thus a light-weight live mirror solution that is comparatively easy to install not requiring new filesystems or block devices and does not hamper local filesystem performance.

Codenamed Fuchsia, one can spot the new platform existing in Google’s Git repositories. However, at the moment, the repository doesn’t include any source code. This project was originally spotted on Hacker News.

If you go ahead and dig a little deeper, you’ll come across a line on Google’s Git repo that reads — “Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System)”.

Upon further digging the GitHub repository, we came to know that Magenta is the new kernel that powers the Fushia OS. The kernel is designed to interact with the OS via object handles. The documentation from the same calls it an operating system targeting the modern phones and PCs.

Stream2Chromecast is a command line Chromecast media streamer for Linux. The tool can transcode unsupported formats in real time and play them on the Chromecast.

Stream2Chromecast features:

  • cast audio and video to a Chromecast device;
  • can transcode any formats not supported by the Chromecast in real time (using FFmpeg or Libav), so you don’t have to convert any video manually;
  • provides basic control commands: pause / unpause / stop playback (currently this only works when not transcoding), set or mute volume;
  • allows specifying a device when multiple Chromecasts are connected on the same network;
  • supports passing custom custom transcoder parameters to ffmpeg or avconv (thanks to this, you can set the quality, add subtitles even though Stream2Chromecast doesn’t directly support it, etc.);
  • supports specifying the port to use for streaming media.
