How Red Star OS Spies on Users

Two German researchers — Florian Grunow and Niklaus Schiess — pulled apart the North Korean operating system, which closely resembles Apple’s Mac OS X, during a presentation at Chaos Communication in Hamburg.

A pair of German researchers have just given the code a once over — and as you’d expect, it’s locked down and oppressive, and worse than just a weaker version of other Linux distros. It’s geared toward enabling and maintaining a total surveillance state, all while giving the illusion of technological progress to its citizens.

U.S. Said to Find North Korea Ordered Cyberattack on Sony – NYTimes.com

American officials have concluded that North Korea was “centrally involved” in the hacking of Sony Pictures computers, even as the studio canceled the release of a far-fetched comedy about the assassination of the North’s leader that is believed to have led to the cyberattack.

Senior administration officials, who would not speak on the record about the intelligence findings, said the White House was debating whether to publicly accuse North Korea of what amounts to a cyberterrorism attack.

While intelligence officials have concluded that the cyberattack was both state-sponsored and far more destructive than any seen before on American soil, there are still differences of opinion over whether North Korea was aided by Sony insiders with knowledge of the company’s computer systems, senior administration officials said.

Sony Just Canceled The Pre mire Of ‘The Interview’ – Business Insider

Sony Pictures has decided to cancel the Dec. 25 release of “The Interview” after major theaters said they wouldn’t screen the movie.

“We have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release of ‘The Interview,'” the company said in a statement.

Reaction To the Sony Hack Is ‘Beyond the Realm of Stupid’

North Korea may really be behind the Sony hack, but we’re still acting like idiots. Peter W. Singer, one of the nations foremost experts on cybersecurity, says Sony’s reaction has been abysmal. “Here, we need to distinguish between threat and capability—the ability to steal gossipy emails from a not-so-great protected computer network is not the same thing as being able to carry out physical, 9/11-style attacks in 18,000 locations simultaneously. I can’t believe I’m saying this. I can’t believe I have to say this.”

Sony Pictures Entertainment has chosen to stand down for “The Interview,” deciding against releasing the Seth RogenJames Franco comedy in any form — including VOD or DVD, as U.S. officials reportedly link Sony’s massive cyber attack to North Korea.

“Sony Pictures has no further release plans for the film,” a spokesman said Wednesday.

Judge rules videotaped Steve Jobs deposition to remain out of public eye

District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers sided with both Apple and plaintiffs in her ruling, saying Jobs’ testimony in the iPod iTunes antitrust case, taped months before his death in 2011, should not be handled as judicial record and will therefore not be made public.

For its part, Apple noted the court has a duty to protect witness testimony. If the Jobs Deposition were made public, it might set a dangerous precedent for the release of videotaped testimony from other high-profile witnesses in future cases. For witnesses in compromising situations, the prospect of having their sworn statements broadcast out of court would likely dissuade testimony, hindering the legal process.

On Tuesday, a jury found Apple not guilty of locking customers in to a monopoly digital music ecosystem with iPod, iTunes and FairPlay digital rights management. Plaintiffs in the case sought $350 million in damages, an amount that would have been tripled to more than $1 billion under U.S. antitrust law.

Cybercriminals behind the TorrenLocker malware may have earned as much as $585,000 over several months from 39,000 PC infections worldwide, of which over 9,000 were from Australia.
If you’re a Windows user in Australia who’s had their files encrypted by hackers after visiting a bogus Australia Post website, chances are you were infected by TorrentLocker and may have contributed to the tens of thousands of dollars likely to have come from Australia due to this digital shakedown racket.

Sony Pictures hack gets uglier; North Korea won’t deny responsibility [Update] | Ars Technica

More evidence has emerged that makes the Sony Pictures hack look similar to a suspected attack on South Korean companies over a year ago. And a spokesperson for the North Korean government, rather than denying his country’s involvement, is playing coy as the damage to Sony appears to be growing daily.

When contacted by the BBC, a spokesperson for North Korea’s mission to the United Nations said, “The hostile forces are relating everything to [North Korea]. I kindly advise you to just wait and see.”

The attackers also posted archive files online containing least 25 gigabytes of data from Sony’s network.

In an email to Ars that included a link to an archive of some of the stolen Sony Pictures data, an individual claiming to be “the boss” of the attackers known as GOP claimed that “tens of TB” of files had been exfiltrated, and would be shared as soon as possible.] Some of those files included Excel spreadsheets and screen grabs from mainframe terminal sessions including employee payroll and medical data.

An archive of files seen by Ars —approximately a gigabyte of sales data , the most recent of which dates to April of this year, and stretches back over 5 years. The files, which have metadata indicating they were produced using a Sony Pictures Entertainment corporate license of Microsoft Office, include corporate PowerPoint templates, image files of contracts for television deals (including local affiliate contracts for “Dr. Oz” and “Seinfeld” reruns) sent by fax machine, and a file from a salesman’s computer called “Passwords.doc.”

The document, last edited by a woman whose LinkedIn account indicates she was a Sony Pictures ad sales assistant in 2011, includes her bosses’ American Express card number and online account information, Lotus Notes usernames and passwords (one of them is “password,” the other is “s0ny123”), Sony network login and password, and their fax numbers. One of those bosses is the current Vice President of Syndication Sales for Sony Pictures Television.

In a phone conversation with Ars, the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of analytics firm Security Scorecard, said that evidence suggested to him that there was at least some insider involvement in the attack. “From a psychological perspective, this attack is invoking emotions that may apply to employees of Sony as well. It may likely have been someone internal leaking the information because they knew how to get to it, rather than it being an outside attacker.”

Critical networks in US, 15 other nations, completely owned, possibly by Iran | Ars Technica

For more than two years, pro-Iranian hackers have penetrated some of the world’s most sensitive computer networks, including those operated by a US-based airline, auto maker, natural gas producer, defense contractor, and military installation, security researchers said.

In many cases, “Operation Cleaver,” as the sustained hacking campaign is being dubbed, has attained the highest levels of system access of targets located in 16 countries total, according to a report published Tuesday by security firm Cylance. Compromised systems in the ongoing attacks include Active Directory domain controllers that store employee login credentials, servers running Microsoft Windows and Linux, routers, switches, and virtual private networks. With more than 50 victims that include airports, hospitals, telecommunications providers, chemical companies, and governments, the Iranian-backed hackers are reported to have extraordinary control over much of the world’s critical infrastructure.

Tuesday’s 86-page report relies on circumstantial evidence to arrive at the conclusion that the 20 or more hackers participating in Operation Cleaver are backed by Iran’s government.

Many of the custom-configured hacking tools they use issue warnings when their external IP addresses trace back to the Middle Eastern country. The infrastructure supporting the vast campaign is too sprawling to be the work of a lone individual or small group; it could only have been sponsored by a nation state.

In all, 50 targets in 16 countries are known to have been compromised. The tally includes 10 victims in the US, four in Israel, and five in Pakistan.

Roku still tops as sales of streaming-media players rise – CNET

During the first three quarters of 2014, 10 percent of US households with a broadband connection bought at least one streaming-media player, market researcher Parks Associates said Tuesday.

Roku’s lineup of set-top boxes and streaming sticks was still the most popular so far this year despite a strong dip, securing 29 percent of sales in the first nine months. Google’s Chromecast stick leaped onto the scene, snagging the No. 2 spot with 20 percent share and stealing Apple TV’s previous slot. The Apple TV box fell to third place with 17 percent share. Amazon’s Fire TV box and stick, also new on the scene, came in fourth place with 10 percent share.

Roku, which has been the dominant force since 2012, saw its market share slip from 46 percent last year to 29 percent in the first nine months of 2014. Apple TV also slipped from 26 percent last year to 17 percent so far this year. They both lost share as Google’s Chromecast and Amazon’s Fire TV have come on strong.

Obama Signs Monsanto Protection Act

Pres. Obama inked his name to H.R. 933, a continuing
resolution spending bill approved in Congress days earlier. Buried 78 pages
within the bill exists a provision that grossly protects biotech
corporations such as the Missouri-based Monsanto Company from
litigation.

Section 735 was an anonymous rider attached to the spending bill (the one everyone wanted signed really, really quickly) and received almost no consideration or attention before being signed into law.

The provision codifies existing USDA practices and elements of a 2010 Supreme Court ruling that lower courts should not automatically prohibit the planting of biotech crop varieties, or the harvest and sale of biotech crops already planted, when their commercial approval is revoked for procedural reasons.

“Section 735 of the Senate appropriations bill/ CR (continuing resolution) contains language to provide some predictability and assurance to farmers who plant biotech crops that have already been deregulated by USDA but are then subject to litigation by anti-biotech activists. The language in the CR was included in the House Agriculture Appropriations bill during the 112th Congress and has, therefore, been in the public domain for a number of months,” noted Richard Gupton, Agricultural Retailers Association, senior vice president of public policy and counsel.

Gregory Conko, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, issued a statement that is quite critical of the protesting activists trying to stir up consumers who aren’t knowledgeable about agriculture or production of biotech crops.

What Obama signed into law was nothing new. Section 735 of H.R. 933 (the rider to the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act which has been dubbed, inaccurately, the Monsanto Protection Act) states that if companies (like Monsanto, yes) were to be involved in a lawsuit over a particular crop or practice, they would potentially be exempt from having to cease use of the crop or practice in question.

What this means in practical terms is that competitors cannot sue Monsanto frivolously and force them to face punitive action before the lawsuit is concluded. So instead of this happening, which would invariably lead to Monsanto tying the USDA up with millions of dollars in legal appeals, a seemingly logical solution to cut the red tape is introduced. It does not grant “immunity” because such claims are simply inaccurate – if a lawsuit concludes and the ruling is that the defendant, be it Monsanto or whomever, must cease their activities, then they must comply.

Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said.

The Real North Korea Threat

The U.S. military has moved a Navy ship capable of intercepting missiles to waters off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, as threats from North Korea’s Kim Jong Un escalate and the White House signals it wants to head off any potential conflict by flexing America’s military might.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons are a “treasure” not to be traded for “billions of dollars,” the statement said. They “are neither a political bargaining chip nor a thing for economic dealings to be presented to the place of dialogue or be put on the table of negotiations aimed at forcing (Pyongyang) to disarm itself,” it said.

North Korea’s “nuclear armed forces represent the nation’s life, which can never be abandoned as long as the imperialists and nuclear threats exist on earth,” the statement said.

“I consider the current North Korean threats very serious,” Ms. Park told the South’s generals. “If the North attempts any provocation against our people and country, you must respond strongly at the first contact with them without any political consideration.

Judge Rules Drug Sniffer Dogs Unconstitutional Without A Warrant!

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that police cannot bring drug-sniffing police dogs onto a suspect’s property to look for evidence without first getting a warrant for a search, a decision which may limit how investigators use dogs’ sensitive noses to search out drugs, explosives and other items hidden from human sight, sound and smell.

The high court split 5–4 on the decision to uphold the Florida Supreme Court’s ruling throwing out evidence seized in the search of Joelis Jardines’ Miami-area house. That search was based on an alert by Franky the drug dog from outside the closed front door.

Iraq 10 years Later

Stunning new statistics from the Watson Institute at Brown University’s ‘Costs of War’ report show that the decade-long War in Iraq has resulted in at least 189,000 deaths and cost more than $2 trillion. Expenses, including interest, could top $6 trillion through 2053.

The 10-year anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq marks a striking failure of accountability on the part of the United States, the United Kingdom and Iraq itself, Human Rights Watch said today.

After the film’s whirlwind exploration of Cheney’s 40 long years of public service, what lingers in the air is this same spooky realization that despite everything – the Iraq War, the absence of WMD’s, the warrantless surveillance, the discoveries at Abu Ghraib – Cheney regrets nothing. “If I had to do it over again,” Cheney says at the end of the film. “I’d do it over in a minute.”

Dick Cheney, in a 1994 interview, lists countless reasons for America not to have invaded Baghdad. Funny how every reason still bears heavy relevance to our position there now.

Cyprus’ Bad Week

That panic forced Cyprus to declare a bank holiday. Then it killed the plan to tax bank deposits, with parliament voting it down. Global stock markets, which had dipped on the initial news of the bailout plan, leveled out as if the whole thing was a false alarm.

At first blush, it seems only fair that the Russians pony up. After all, the tens of billions of euros that Russians have parked in Cypriot bank accounts helped trigger the island’s financial crisis. And Moscow protested loudly when some European leaders wanted to levy stiff taxes on Cypriot bank accounts, a plan that now has been scuppered. Cyprus now is almost €6 billion ($7.7 billion) short of the money it needs to cut a deal with the so-called troika of European creditors and the International Monetary Fund.

But counting on aid from Russia is a bad idea for Cyprus—and for the rest of Europe. Cyprus has already gotten a €2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) loan from Moscow, and it can’t borrow more without greatly increasing its debt ceiling, something the troika won’t permit. Instead of offering a loan, Russia might ask for rights to natural gas fields in the Mediterranean south of Cyprus. Europe already depends heavily on Russia for natural gas, and extending Russia’s control over future supplies would almost certainly boost gas prices across the region, Athanios Orphanides, a former governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, told Bloomberg Television this morning. “It would be a huge economic cost,” he said.

Bitcoin BOOMS this Week

One of the side effects of the Eurozone crisis could be that some people turn to the deregulated, decentralised currency when they otherwise may not have even considered it. The events in Cyprus this past week – where it looked like the government, in desperate need of money, had planned to impose a levy on savings – seemed to have coincided with a slight spike in downloads of Bitcoin mobile apps in Spain, a country with its own wobbly economic situation.

U.N. investigator: U.S. drone strikes violate Pakistan sovereignty

After days of meeting with Pakistani officials, the United Nations official investigating Washington’s global campaign of drone strikes attacked the legal and strategic basis for the robotic war in its biggest battlefield. And he raised doubts over whether Americans operating the drones can actually distinguish terrorists from average Pakistanis.

+ Not about Changing US Policy

Though Emmerson’s findings likely won’t change U.S. policy, Imtiaz Gul, a Pakistani security analyst who provided Emmerson with case studies of civilian victims of drone strikes, said the U.N. investigator’s research does shed light on civilian victims of the U.S. drone program and highlights the risky precedent set by carrying out missile strikes on foreign territory without that government’s consent.

“It’s not about forcing the U.S. to change its policy,” Gul said. “It’s more about educating on an issue that could create dangerous precedence for other countries.”

Washington state names “pot czar” after legalizing marijuana

Prominent policy analyst and UCLA professor Mark Kleiman has won Washington State’s consulting contract on I–502 implementation.

Reformers have had a “love/hate” relationship with Kleiman over the years. He supports some of our issues, like marijuana legalization — sort of.

He acknowledges the impact of prohibition in increasing the harmfulness of addictive drugs to their users, but states as nearly a fact the assumption that overall harm would go up with legalization nonetheless — while admonishing the rest of us not to make assumptions about the positive effects of even just marijuana legalization.

But Kleiman harshed the CNN host’s giggly buzz by not laughing back, and then taking a serious tone: “No, because I think whether the people on our team have used cannabis at one point or another … is irrelevant to the job we’ve been chosen to do.”

Dorner Manhunt Comes to an End

A lot of people don\’t seem to know what a \”burner\” is. A burner is an incendiary tear gas canister that is specifically made to start a fire. These were used in Waco on the branch Davidians. At the time the FBI claimed the cult member started the fire, but much later the FBI admitted to using incendiary tear gas canisters to burn the Davidians out of hiding.

A tear gas canister ignited a fire at a City Terrace area home surrounded by SWAT officers as part of a standoff the morning Wednesday Jan. 16, 2013, according to sheriff\’s deputies.

Hoping to end the standoff, law enforcement authorities first lobbed “traditional” tear gas into the cabin. When that did not work, they opted to use CS gas canisters, which are known in law enforcement parlance as incendiary tear gas. These canisters have significantly more chance of starting a fire.

Obama’s 2013 State of the Union Address

The main difference between the White House executive order and CISPA is that CISPA would allow private companies (like Facebook or Google) to share details about cyber attacks with the government, whereas the executive order is a one-way street, with the feds sharing information with the private sector. CISPA opponents were concerned about immunity clauses that they said would incentivize companies to hand over customer information without hesitation.

DHS engages \’Constitution free\’ zones around US border

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, anyone who is within a 100 mile radius of the US border is subject to the search and seizure of any and all electronic devices for no apparent reason. These zones known as \”Constitution free\” zones have many privacy advocates speaking out against the new policy and fear that this new procedure is a violation of civil liberties for American citizens.

US senators propose assassination court to screen drone targets

The idea was bandied about during Thursday\’s confirmation hearing for CIA director nominee John Brennan, who fueled the talk by saying he thinks the concept is \”worthy of discussion.\” The nominee, as a vocal supporter of the targeted-killing program, has come under scrutiny for what some lawmakers see as the administration\’s unchecked power to kill, even if the target is an American citizen.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said as part of an effort to regulate the killing, she wants to review proposals to create something similar to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court — which reviews requests for wiretaps against suspected foreign agents — for drone strikes.
Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, is pushing the idea the hardest.

According to his vision, the drone court would be an avenue for U.S. officials to argue in secret before a judge why an American citizen should be targeted for death. He said it would be like \”going to a court for a warrant\” and proving probable cause.

Attacks on Government:

Topic: Anonymous hacks 100 Turkish Government Sites

  • As part of Operation Anti-Sec, Anonymous has compromised the Turkish governments network of sites, and locked the administrators out.
  • A number of the sites appear to be for Hospitals and other medical facilities
  • The group released a 20MB archive on ThePirateBay, a complete dump of the content of each of the compromised sites.
  • Many of the sites were defaced
  • In a Cyber Warfare type situation, these types of actions could disable critical government functions, everything from weather forecasts to tax filing.

Submitted by: Acidpunk

Topic: Florida Elections Database Hacked

  • The database contained the names, usernames and plaintext passwords of election workers and polling stations
  • Username was first initial, last name, and password was first initial, last initial and 4 numbers. These passwords are too predictable and horribly insecure.

Submitted by: Deathwalk

Topic: Attacks on RoK Gov might have been Drills by DPRK

  • Attacks that crippled South Korean (Republic of Korea) government websites in July 2009 and again in March 2011 might have been cyber warfare drills conducted by North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea)
  • Attacks were likely reconnaissance to start building a detailed plan of attack in the event of war.
  • Much of the attack came from within South Korea, it is speculated that the virus was left on a number of South Korean file sharing sites, and then the resulting botnet of infected computers was used to take down the government websites.

Attacks on Media:

Topic: Washington Post hacked, 1.27m email addresses leaked

  • The Washington Post’s Jobs site was compromised on June 27th and 28th
  • 1.27 Million Usernames and email addresses were leaked
  • The Washington Post claims that no passwords or other personal information were stolen (were the passwords just hashed, and therefore ‘not disclosed’, or did the attackers not gain access to the passwords?)

Topic: Fox News Twitter hacked, False Obama Death Notice

  • The @foxnewspolitics twitter account was hijacked and false news of US President Obama’s assassination was posted.
  • As with all incidents of this nature, it is being investigated by the Secret Service
  • BBC Coverage

Submitted by: beyere5398 and LeifAndersen

The Future:

Topic: The Pentagon Establishes Cyber Warfare Retaliation Policy

  • The Pentagon has concluded that computer sabotage coming from another country can constitute an act of war
  • Foreign directed hacker could pose as significant a threat to U.S. nuclear reactors, subways or pipelines as a hostile country’s military
  • If a cyber attack causes significant disruption (for example, to the power grid), or death, then the attackers will be met with conventional armed force.
  • New York Times coverage

Topic: More is happening than we actually know

  • By reverse engineering a crashed EP-3E Aries II reconnaissance plane, the Chinese were able to begin intercepting encrypted US Navy communications
  • A few weeks after President Obama’s election, the Chinese flooded communications links they knew were monitored by the NSA with unencrypted copies of intercepted communications, proving they had compromised American communications links.

Topic: Cyber Warfare will be constant and often subtle

  • The attacks on RSA earlier this year were not conclusively linked to Cyber Warfare, they could have been the work of a lone hacker, a small group, or an organized government
  • The RSA hack later led to the compromise of secure systems at Lockheed Martin and other US arms manufacturers.
  • Earlier this year we also saw the compromise of a large number of email accounts belonging to government and military officials. This type of reconnaissance can be used to gather information that would allow attackers to break in to more secured systems over time.
  • Many attacks go unnoticed, as the perpetrators keep the systems just to be used to launch future attacks from. As we saw in the RSA hack, the attackers used an offsite webserver they had compromised earlier to send the data to, to avoid connecting directly to RSA and possibly leaving a trail. They then destroyed the webserver, breaking the link back to them
  • In the past was have discussed the similar tactic of Island hopping, compromising an outward facing system such as a web, mail or monitoring server, or the desktop of a secretary or other lower level employee, and then slowly gathering more and more information in order to compromise the true targets of the attack.
