Or are They? — The reason data is being sent to a Chines server is because BLU is using an over-the-air update service called Adups, which is based in China, and which allows some phone makers to request a lot of personal data from users’ phones. Linux Running on Playstation 4 Revealed By Hacker Fail overflow, Playstation Jailbreak Could Actually Boost Sales of the Console!

Therefore, when hackers announced earlier in December that it is possible to jailbreak the PlayStation 4, it came out as quite an achievement. This step has been taken further by another group of hackers name failoverflow. They have jailbroken a PS4 and further loaded it with Linux.

Sony Orbis OS is run by the Sony console and it is based on Linux FreeBSD. It was further reported by Engadget that this hack exploits the Webkit bug in order to gain access to the kernel. It also works on Orbis version 1.74. It is also a much older version than the current 3.11 on the PS4. Moreover, the bug has since been patched.

However, it seems like the hacker group’s method can be tailored to further work on future consoles. The first thing done by the group during the jailbreak demonstration was running a Game Boy Advance emulator on the Linux PS4. At the same time, they fired up a copy of Pokemon Emerald.

Fedora 24 Beta released!

This new release also features GNOME 3.20. There have been changes to the theming API in GTK+ 3. At this time the API is under heavy development and will not remain stable. As a result, applications that use custom CSS theming for example, may have rendering issues. This could include default applications that come with Fedora 24 Beta Workstation. We request that users try out their favorite GTK+ 3 based applications and report bugs to the upstream developers so they can be fixed in time for the final release.

Linux Mint: Too Big to Fail?

Linux Mint 18 will no longer provide separate, codec-free installation media for OEM and magazine distribution. Instead, the distribution will ship without multimedia support while making it easy for users to acquire media codecs during the initial installation of the operating system. “OEM installation disks and NoCodec images will no longer be released. Instead, similar to other distributions, images will ship without codecs and will support both traditional and OEM installations. This will reduce our release cycle to 4 separate events and the production and testing of 12 ISO images. Multimedia codecs can be installed easily: From the welcome screen, by clicking on “Multimedia Codecs”, or from the main menu, by clicking on “Menu”->”Sound and Video”->”Install Multimedia Codecs”, or during the installation process, by clicking a checkbox option.” Additional information on the upcoming release of Linux Mint 18 can be found in the project’s monthly newsletter.

Why Mint? We checked the Internet and….

When I reflect on why I’ve chosen Mint over Ubuntu in recent years, it came down to:

Seriously disliking Unity. (But now I can install Cinnamon packages on Ubuntu easily.)
Easy ability to play DVD’s. (But it just got a tiny bit harder; not significantly.)
Wanting to give Shuttleworth the middle finger regarding forcing Unity down people’s throats. (But I think my finger has now been extended long enough.)

Plasma 5.5 Review

Plasma 5.5 features updates to the Breeze theme, there is an expanded feature set in the application launcher, new Plasma Applets, OpenGL ES support has been restored in Kwin, and there is much greater Wayland support. With Plasma 5.5 comes basic support for the Wayland session without depending upon X11/XWayland. However, this KDE Wayland support isn’t yet ready for casual Linux desktop users

KDE Plasma 5.5 Officially Released

digiKam 5.0.0-beta2 is released

This release marks almost complete port of the application to Qt5 and KF5 API. All Qt4/KDE4 code has been removed and many parts have been re-written, reviewed, and tested. Porting to Qt5 required a lot of work, as many important APIs had to be changed or replaced by new ones.

In addition to code porting, we introduced several changes and optimizations, especially regarding dependencies on the KDE project. Although digiKam is still a KDE desktop application, it now uses many Qt dependencies instead of KDE dependencies. This simplifies the porting job on other operating systems, code maintenance, while reducing sensitivity of API changes from KDE project.

Kdenlive 15.12, what to expect

We have been working hard over the past months to improve stability, polish the interface and continue our big code cleanup. Kdenlive 15.12.0 will be released next week, and here are some of the changes you will get with this new version:

New Features

We managed to add a few nice features. here are a few of them:

Timeline effects and Bin effects can be temporarily disabled and re-enabled in 2 clicks
A basic implementation of a copy / paste feature has been added, which allows you to save a part of your timeline and import it later inside another project with all effects and transitions being editable
Track transparency: a simple click allows you to enable / disable transparency for a given track
Icons now automatically adapt their color scheme (light or dark) to the UI theme

Krita 2.9.10 Released

The tenth bugfix release already! There are quite a few fixes, though the focus these days is really on getting Krita 3.0 ready for the first alpha release. Of particular interest to owners of a system with an AMD processor is the option to disable vectorization support. That might improve performance, but only for users of AMD systems! We’ve also got a fix by a new contributor, Nicholas LaPointe!

ksuperkey allows you to open the application launcher in KDE Plasma Desktop using the Super key (also known as the ‘Windows key’). Unlike other solutions, it will not affect your current keyboard shortcuts, as the Super key will still act as a modifier when held down.

Note that ksuperkey does not depend on any specific desktop environment and should work fine on KDE Plasma 4, Plasma 5, GNOME Shell, Unity, Xfce, LXDE, etc.

KeePassX 2.0 has arrived

KeePassX 2.0 is using the new .kdbx (same as KeePass 2) database format.
You can import your .kdb database from 0.4 from the Database > Import KeePass 1 database.

This is a one-way process though. You can’t migrate back to the .kdb format.

Mozilla Will Stop Developing And Selling Firefox OS Smartphones

Farewell Firefox OS smartphones. Mozilla today announced an end to its smartphone experiment, and said that it would stop developing and selling Firefox OS smartphones. It will continue to experiment on how it might work on other connected devices and Internet of Things networks.

The announcement was made earlier today at Mozilla’s developer event in Orlando, “Mozlando“, and several people were tweeting the basics of the news. Now Mozilla has provided us with a full statement from Ari Jaaksi, Mozilla’s SVP of Connected Devices.

“We are proud of the benefits Firefox OS added to the Web platform and will continue to experiment with the user experience across connected devices. We will build everything we do as a genuine open source project, focused on user experience first and build tools to enable the ecosystem to grow.

Firefox OS proved the flexibility of the Web, scaling from low-end smartphones all the way up to HD TVs. However, we weren’t able to offer the best user experience possible and so we will stop offering Firefox OS smartphones through carrier channels.

We’ll share more on our work and new experiments across connected devices soon.”

Firefox OS was first unveiled in 2013, with the aim of targeting the developing world and late adopters with low-cost handsets.

On December 9, Microsoft released a Linux certification: Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) Linux on Azure. You know what’s even more amazing? Microsoft created this certifcation with the help of the The Linux Foundation. Maybe dogs and cats can live together!

When it goes on sale, firmware updates in Linux will work out-of-the-box. I’ve been told that Dell are considering expanding out the LVFS support to all new models supporting UEFI updates. In order to prioritize what models to work on first, I’ve been asked to share this anonymous survey on what Dell hardware people are using on Linux and to gauge if people actually care about being able to upgrade the firmware easily in Linux.

Erle Robotics, a Spanish company, has been at the forefront of using Linux in devices and had introduced the Erle-Copter drone powered by Ubuntu Snappy Core back in February 2015, has launched the world’s first Ubuntu powered Drone on 3rd May.

Passwords should also be more than 8 characters long and contain mixed case letters, numbers and special characters. Of course it’s impossible to remember such passwords. That’s where Fort comes in. CryEngine to Support Linux

Let’s talk about the pengui… elephant in the room If you read the above paragraph, it might not come as a major surprise to you, but we are proud to announce that we will add an Open GL implementation and support for running your EaaS games on Linux with one of our next updates. For now, Linux support will be limited to the game launcher, and the Sandbox editor will still require Microsoft Windows. And of course, Linux support will be subject to the same developer-friendly terms as on Windows: Your monthly subscription fee will allow you to sell your games for Linux in addition to Windows, with no additional fees or royalties required.

A massive change for Ubuntu package management is on the horizon

Snappy Personal is slotted to take the place of Desktop Next. If you’ve been following Ubuntu, you know that Next is the iteration of Ubuntu that will feature Unity 8 and Mir, which will power desktops, phones, and tablets. Snappy Personal will be the desktop image that will install Ubuntu 15.10 (if it arrives in time for that release) that’s built with said Unity 8 and Mir.

Ubuntu Plans for Python 3 by Default

Within the Ubuntu world, by Ubuntu 16.04 LTS next April they want Python 3 by default and potentially to only have Python 3.5. In upstream Debian for their 9.0 Stretch release they are also hoping for no Python2 by default, albeit the Stretch release is much further out.
