Emulation Gaming on Linux

Game Emulators for GNU/Linux

Linux supports a variety of game emulators that allow users to play games that were originally intended for hardware like the Gameboy, arcade games, Atari, and many others. The emulators are relatively easy to setup as readers will see.

MAME is going open source to be a ‘learning tool for developers’

The folks who maintain MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) are aiming to make the project completely open source in order to expand both its pool of supporters and its utility to developers and historians.

This is notable because MAME is seen to be the premier emulator for arcade games, and the volunteers who maintain it have done laudable work to preserve artifacts of the game industry in a playable state.

MAME’s source code has long been freely available, but it’s never technically been open source. Instead it’s been available under a modified BSID license that prohibits, among other things, commercial use of the code.

According to the Lakka’s official website, it is a lightweight distribution of GNU/Linux that was designed to transform any computer into a full-blown retro game console. Lakka is derived from the well-known OpenELEC operating system.

Being built on top of the well-known RetroArch retro game emulator tool, the Lakka Linux distribution is capable of emulating a wide variety of hardware. Additionally, it includes attractive features like video streaming, joypad hotplug, and Braid-like rewinding.

Mupen64 Nintendo 64 Emulator

Mupen64 is a cross-platform plugin-based N64 emulator which is capable of accurately playing many games. Included are four MIPS R4300 CPU emulators, with dynamic recompilers for 32-bit x86 and 64-bit amd64 systems, and necessary plugins for audio, graphical rendering (RDP), signal co-processor (RSP), and input. There is 1 included OpenGL video plugin, called RiceVideo. There are 3 other excellent video plugins being maintained by wahrhaft, called Arachnoid, Glide64, and Z64.

Free and legal ROMs

Lutris

Lutris is an open source gaming platform for GNU/Linux. It allows you
to gather and manage (install, configure and launch) all your games
acquired from any source, in a single interface.

Lutris’ main window

Features
  • Manage your Linux games, Windows games, emulated console games and
    browser games
  • Launch your Steam and Desura games
  • Community-written installers to ease up your games’ installation
  • More that 20 emulators installed automatically or in a single
click, providing support for most gaming systems from the late 70’s to
    the present day.
  • Download and play libre and freeware games

There’s a lot more to come, here are some of the planned
features that you can expect in future versions:

  • Humble Bundle and GOG support
  • Mass import of emulator ROMs using the TOSEC database
  • Game saves management
  • Archive your installation files on external or network drives for a
    fully automatic installation procedure
  • Joystick configuration GUI with keyboard mapping features
  • Community features: friends list, chat and multiplayer event

Gnome Video Arcade

GNOME Video Arcade is a simple Mame frontend for the GNOME desktop.

It supports both the xmame and sdlmame ports of MAME for GNU/Linux and other UNIX-like operating systems, and can utilize third-party data files like arcade history and game categories.

GNOME Video Arcade recognizes that the frontend is not the point; the games are. As such, its chief design goal is to help you quickly find a game to play and then get out of the way. Its purpose is not to help you manage your ROM collection, nor to provide a confusing graphical interface for MAME’s plethora of configuration options.

GNOME Video Arcade was written by MatthewBarnes and is released under terms of the GNU General Public License,

Oculus to develop Rift for Windows only, suspends Mac, Linux work | Computerworld

Sorry, Mac and Linux fans: Facebook-owned Oculus Rift, the headset that perhaps more than any other device has ignited public interest in virtual reality, will run almost exclusively on well-appointed Windows PCs, at least in the near future.

The process that most laptops use to output video doesn’t work with the Rift, and Oculus has temporarily halted development for hardware running Apple and Linux. That’s the takeaway from the spec information Oculus published Friday detailing what type of computer would be compatible with its headset.

Four Remote Packet-of-Death Vulnerabilities In The Linux Kernel

Just this morning the major VENOM security vulnerability was made public while a few hours later, a kernel developer has gone public with four “remote packet of death” vulnerabilities affecting a mainline Linux kernel WLAN driver.

VENOM, CVE-2015-3456, is a security vulnerability in the virtual floppy drive code used by many computer virtualization platforms. This vulnerability may allow an attacker to escape from the confines of an affected virtual machine (VM) guest and potentially obtain code-execution access to the host. Absent mitigation, this VM escape could open access to the host system and all other VMs running on that host, potentially giving adversaries significant elevated access to the host’s local network and adjacent systems.

Exploitation of the VENOM vulnerability can expose access to corporate intellectual property (IP), in addition to sensitive and personally identifiable information (PII), potentially impacting the thousands of organizations and millions of end users that rely on affected VMs for the allocation of shared computing resources, as well as connectivity, storage, security, and privacy.
