Note: This was an “all-or-nothing” campaign, but we crossed well over the $1.5m goal, and will be delivering on the Librem 5 phone. If you would like a Librem 5 you can simply pre-order one of the appropriate rewards now, and we will add you to the shipping queue!

Looking back at Fedora Workstation so far

Well I thought as we putting the finishing touches on Fedora Workstation 27 I should try to look back at everything we have achieved since Fedora Workstation was launched with Fedora 21.

There’s an old “ha ha, only serious” joke. If you go to a Linux forum and ask for help fixing your WiFi driver, everyone will ignore you. If, instead, you say “Linux sucks, you can’t even get a f*&$ing WiFi driver working!” thousands of people will solve the problem for you.

Why Mark Shuttleworth Dumped Ubuntu Unity Linux Desktop

“What you’ll see at some stage soon is that we have broken even on all the pieces that we do commercially without Unity,” Shuttleworth said. “At some stage after that, we will take a round of investment which will be a growth round and that will be aimed at helping us to become a public company in due course.”

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you 18.04 LTS, the Bionic Beaver.

High Performance Remote Linux Desktop

I’ve recently setup two remote desktop systems running Ubuntu 17.10. One I call Orbital, up in the cloud, and one I call sub.orbital, which is a local box on the studio LAN.

I can remote into both of these using x2go, which rides on top of SSH.

X2Go

x2go uses the nx library that was developed by NoMachine. All of the latency intensive parts of X forwarding was worked around by creating a nx proxy on each side of the network connection and sending compressed updates between the two proxies.

Basic features of X2Go
  • Graphical Remote Desktop that works well over both low bandwidth and high bandwidth connections
  • The ability to disconnect and reconnect to a session, even from another client
  • Support for sound
  • Support for as many simultaneous users as the computer’s resources will support (NX3 free edition limited you to 2.)
  • Traffic is securely tunneled over SSH
  • File Sharing from client to server
  • Printer Sharing from client to server
  • Easily select from multiple desktop environments (e.g., MATE, GNOME, KDE)
  • Remote support possible via Desktop Sharing
  • The ability to access single applications by specifying the name of the desired executable in the client configuration or selecting one of the pre-defined common applications

How to install X2Go

Altispeed Tech Portal

The best remote desktop experience has never been easier, we’ll show you the power of X2Go with the security of SSH!

My Current Setup
  • Ubuntu MATE 17.10

  • Low hardware requirements, keeps cost down.

  • Great workflow
  • MATE does not require a GPU powered compositor.

  • Considering XFCE for future testing

  • Solus pushing forward Steam with Snaps — That snap, as some people have already guessed as much, will be the linux-steam-integration project, using a strict-mode LSI intercept module. We can also make various tweaks on top of that runtime to enforce ABI compatibility where it might be missing.
  • AAC will be supported in Fedora Workstation 27 — What we will be shipping in Fedora is a modified version of the AAC implementation released by Google, which was originally written by Frauenhoffer. On top of that we will of course be providing GStreamer plugins to enable full support for playing and creating AAC files for GStreamer applications.
  • Plasma 5.11 released — Plasma 5.11 brings a redesigned settings app, improved notifications, a more powerful task manager. Plasma 5.11 is the first release to contain the new “Vault”, a system to allow the user to encrypt and open sets of documents in a secure and user-friendly way, making Plasma an excellent choice for people dealing with private and confidential information.
  • 5.12 aims for Wayland improvements — If we all just use Wayland and report and fix the bugs we run into I’m sure that 5.12 will be an awesome release on Wayland. So please help to make it happen!
  • KDE turns 21 — t was on 14 October 1996 that the “Kool Desktop Environment” was founded by Matthias Ettrich. At the time he wanted KDE to be a “consistent, nice looking free desktop-environment.”
  • Fwupd 1.0 Released — fwupd now supports 72 different kinds of hardware, support for another ~12 devices is currently being worked on, many vendors continue using or exploring fwupd, and around 165,000 devices each month get updated firmware using fwupd with LVFS.
  • Oneplus collecting data in Oxygen OS — Moore discovered that some of the data being sent to OnePlus’ servers included the phone’s IMEI number, the phone number, MAC addresses, mobile network names and IMSI prefixes, Wi-Fi connection info, and the phone’s serial number.
  • Say they’ll stop — By the end of October, “all OnePlus phones running OxygenOS will have a prompt in the setup wizard that asks users if they want to join our user experience program.” Not only that, but he also stated that OnePlus “will no longer be collecting telephone numbers, MAC Addresses and WiFi information.
  • Librem 5 funded — 14 days early, we have crossed a historic milestone.
  • Purism Collaborates with Cryptocurrency Monero — The Monero Project is a grassroots, community-driven initiative that advocates for privacy on a global scale by producing several free libre open source software projects, with the flagship offering being Monero, a fungible and decentralized cryptocurrency.

Wes and Chris report back from SeaGL 2017

fwupd hits 1.0.0

Since we started the project, we’ve basically re-architected the way the daemon works, re-imagined how the metadata is downloaded and managed, and changed core ways we’ve done the upgrades themselves.

The systemd Corner

For each service unit a restart counter is now kept: it is increased
each time the service is restarted due to Restart=, and may be
queried using “systemctl show -p NRestarts …”.

TL;DR: you may now configure systemd to dynamically allocate a UNIX
user ID for service processes when it starts them and release it when
it stops them. It’s pretty secure, mixes well with transient services,
socket activated services and service templating.

Sending everyone a SIGSTOP before the real signal completely
avoids this. With all processes suspended, all of them will get
your signal before any of them can wake up from other causes. If
they’re going to die from the signal, they’ll die on the spot;
they’re not going to die (because you’re starting with SIGTERM
or SIGHUP and they block or handle it), they’ll only get woken
up at the end, after most of the dust has settled. It’s a great
solution to a subtle issue.

TorProxy is a tool which uses netfilter hooks in the linux kernel to route all network traffic through the Tor network

The module uses netfilter hooks in the linux kernel to filter/NAT packets and ensure all outbound traffic is headed for the Tor network.

Why did Compiz “””die”””?

I don’t understand. People act like Compiz is archaic, gimmicky, and buggy, but that has not at all been my experience.

It’s at least as stable as gnome-shell, and it’s more configurable than even kwin. A lot of the effects are gaudy, but there are plenty of simple & pleasant animations…and even they’re configurable. The window and desktop management plugins are top-notch, and give me an insanely efficient work environment.

I liked gnome-shell, but I like compiz much, much more. I’m officially jumping ship to XFCE just to get back to compiz, and I don’t understand why more people/distros haven’t.

Success — Linux Phone Crowdfunding Campaign Reaches Its Goal

Unplugged Upgrades

Why the changes?
  • LINUX Unplugged is JB’s largest podcast
  • Possibly the largest Linux podcast in the world (accounting for video downloads.)
  • And we don’t want to stand still. I was going to wait until 300, but I can’t hold back!
What are the changes?
  • Full video LUP. Better than LAS video.
  • And we’re doing it by making LUP an audio only show.
  • More edited, closer to LAN’s polish with the chill vibe of LUP. And live.
  • We buy about $1k in camera equipment and supporting hardware. Camera for Chris, Camera for Wes, studio cam, guest cam.
  • We release a full unedited video version, with behind the scenes camera feeds to Patrons.
Benefits
  • The wider audience gets a better sounding, more polished product.
  • Video version with better production than LAS for those who really want it. After hardware investment would just use our existing production pipeline. IE we’re already plumbed for it.

  • GNOME officially on board for the Librem 5 — The GNOME Foundation is committed to partnering with Purism to create hackfests, tools, emulators, and build awareness that surround moving GNOME/GTK onto the Librem 5 phone.
  • Replicant expands list of supported devices — A few months have passed since the initial Replicant 6.0 release and it’s time for another one. This release more than doubles the number of supported devices and contains a few important fixes and improvements.
  • UBports release OTA 2 — The UBports project is excited to announce the immediate availability of Ubuntu Touch 15.04 OTA-2.
This is a huge release for the Ubuntu Touch platform, bringing new supported devices, new features, and many bug fixes.
  • Launching Pipewire! — Pipewire is the latest creation of GStreamer co-creator Wim Taymans. The original reason it was created was that we realized that as desktop applications would be moving towards primarly being shipped as containerized Flatpaks we would need something for video similar to what PulseAudio was doing for Audio.
  • EFF quits W3C over Encrypted Media Extensions — In 2013, EFF was disappointed to learn that the W3C had taken on the project of standardizing “Encrypted Media Extensions,” an API whose sole function was to provide a first-class role for DRM within the Web browser ecosystem. By doing so, the organization offered the use of its patent pool, its staff support, and its moral authority to the idea that browsers can and should be designed to cede control over key aspects from users to remote parties.
  • Facebook finally caves on react.js license — Next week, we are going to relicense our open source projects React, Jest, Flow, and Immutable.js under the MIT license. We’re relicensing these projects because React is the foundation of a broad ecosystem of open source software for the web, and we don’t want to hold back forward progress for nontechnical reasons.
  • Red Hat Announces Broad Expansion to Open Source Patent Promise — The expanded Patent Promise, while consistent with Red Hat’s prior positions, breaks new ground in expanding the amount of software covered and otherwise clarifying the scope of the promise. Red Hat believes its updated Patent Promise represents the broadest commitment to protecting the open source software community to date.
