Ubuntu Tablet Pushed Back

Bq has quietly pushed back the shipping estimate of the world’s first true Ubuntu tablet by one week.

Updating shipping information for both HD and FHD models of tablet on its website, Bq say “Deliveries will take place starting from the second half of April“.

It previously read: “Deliveries will take place starting from the second week of April” (emphasis ours).

Not a huge delay but a delay nonetheless.

If you pre-ordered the tablet on the assumption of getting it this week this is us telling why you may be waiting a little longer for a dispatch notice.

The delay was pointed out to us by reader Jack F., who explained in his e-mail

“I pre-ordered the BQ tablet thinking that deliveries would take place second week of April. BQ have changed this to second half on their site without notifying via email it would be delayed. Would be good for other customers to know.”

Researchers help shut down spam botnet that enslaved 4,000 Linux machines

Known as Mumblehard, the botnet was the _product of highly skilled developers. It used a custom “packer” to conceal the P__erl-based source code that made it run, a backdoor that gave attackers persistent access, and a mail daemon that was able to send large volumes of spam._

itch.io Open Market Place trying to get App on Steam

Itch.io is an open marketplace for indie games. According to their About page, if you’ve made a game you can easily upload it, set the price, and sell your game through Itch.io, and “It’s never necessary to get votes, likes, or follows to get your content approved…”

Speaking of which, the creators of Itch.io have a desktop client called Itch, and while it’s already available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, they’re going a step further by putting Itch on Steam Greenlight, where they hope to get enough votes, likes, or follows to make it onto Steam proper. Which sounds a bit strange, trying to launch an app for a games marketplace on another games marketplace. As one commenter puts it: “storefrontception.”

Linus Torvalds Gives TED Talk

Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux operating system and the Git source code management system, opened the “Code Power” session at the recent TED2016 conference, speaking in an interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson.

In the talk, Torvalds, whose blunt approach in dealing with people is well known, stated, “I’m actually not a people person. I don’t really love other people, but I do love other people who get involved in my project.”

In the TED talk, Torvalds admitted that he is sometimes “myopic, when it comes to other people’s feelings…” However, he said, “What I love about open source is that it really allows different people to work together.”

Nonetheless, typically self-deprecating Torvalds doesn’t see himself as a visionary. Instead, he says: “I’m an engineer. I’m happy with the people who are wandering around looking at the stars but I am looking at the ground and I want to fix the pothole before I fall in.”

I actually am very happy with the Linux desktop, and I started the project for my own needs, and my needs are very much fulfilled. That’s why, to me, it’s not a failure. I would obviously love for Linux to take over that world too, but it turns out it’s a really hard area to enter. I’m still working on it. It’s been 25 years. I can do this for another 25. I’ll wear them down.”

The 7 problems with ATM security

Kaspersky presents a list of the 7 reasons why ATMs are so easily compromised, based on a talk given at the SAS2016 conference
“Automated teller machines (ATM) have always a been a big target for criminals. In the past hunting for ATMs included some heavy tools like a cutting torch or explosives. However with the dawn of the Digital Age, everything has changed. Nowadays culprits can ‘jackpot’ an ATM without such special effects.”

ATMs are basically just computers (PCs)
That PC is likely running an old operating system (in early 2014, 95% of all ATMs still ran Windows XP)
The software other than the OS is also likely vulnerable. Many ATMs still have the bundled version of flash that came with stock Windows XP, which now has 9000 known vulnerabilities
ATMs have no software integrity control, no antivirus solutions, no authentication of an app that sends commands to cash dispenser.
Weak physical security for the PC part of the ATM. While the deposit box and cash dispenser are armored against attack, the PC is usually only hidden behind some thin plastic. “There is no money in that part of the ATM”
ATM control PCs have standard interfaces, that are not secured. Let me just plug this USB stick into your ATM, now it is my ATM
ATMs are increasingly directly connected to the Internet. You can find ATMs on Shodan

ATMs are not replaced very often, so upgrades to the physical protections of the PC component will likely not happen very soon
When was the last time you saw an ATM down for software updates?
Maybe if the criminals keep stealing large amounts of money, the banks will be more interested in replacing the ATMs
This of course doesn’t cover the private ATMs you often see in convenience stores

FireEye Detection Evasion and Whitelisting of Arbitrary Malware

Researchers at Blue Frost Security have developed a way to evade the dynamic analysis of the FireEye suite of security appliances
The FireEye appliance works by starting untrusted binaries and applications in virtualization and observing what they do
If the application is found to be malicious, it is blocked
Only applications allowed by the FireEye device can be run on the protected computers
“The analysis engine evasion allows an attacker to completely bypass FireEye’s virtualization-based dynamic analysis on Windows and add arbitrary binaries to the internal whitelist of binaries for which the analysis will be skipped until the whitelist entry is wiped after a day”
“FireEye is employing the Virtual Execution Engine (VXE) to perform a dynamic analysis. In order to analyze a binary, it is first placed inside a virtual machine. A Windows batch script is then used to copy the binary to a temporary location within the virtual machine, renaming it from “malware.exe” to its original file name.”
“No further sanitization of the original filename is happening which allows an attacker to use Windows environment variables inside the original filename which are resolved inside the batch script. Needless to say this can easily lead to an invalid filename, letting the copy operation fail.”
Let’s take the filename FOO%temp%BAR.exe which results in:
copy malware.exe “%temp%\FOOC:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\TempBAR.exe”
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
“The batch script continues and tries to execute the binary under its new name which of course will fail as well because it does not exist.”
“Afterwards the behavioral analysis inside the virtual machine is started which is running for a certain amount of time looking for malicious behavior. Since the binary was not started in the virtual machine in the first place, an empty virtual machine will be analyzed and no malicious behavior will be detected.”
“Once a binary was analyzed and did not show any malicious behavior, its MD5 hash is added to an internal list of binaries already analyzed. If a future binary which is to be analyzed matches an MD5 hash in this list, the analysis will be skipped for that file. The MD5 hash will stay in the white list until it is wiped after day.”
The issue was reported to FireEye on September 14th, and responded quickly
FireEye released updates for some of its products on October 5th and 15th
On December 31st FireEye published their Q4 security advisory
FireEye Security Advisory
On January 14th, FireEye asked that BFS delay publication of the vulnerability for another 30 days, as too many clients had not yet installed the update

Libgraphite Vulnerabilities Impact Firefox, OpenOffice, and Others

Talos is releasing an advisory for four vulnerabilities that have been found within the Libgraphite library
Which is used for font processing in Linux, Firefox, OpenOffice, and other major applications.
The most severe vulnerability results from an out-of-bounds read which the attacker can use to achieve arbitrary code execution.
A second vulnerability is an exploitable heap overflow.
Finally, the last two vulnerabilities result in denial of service situations.
To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker simply needs the user to run a Graphite-enabled application that renders a page using a specially crafted font that triggers one of these vulnerabilities.
Since Mozilla Firefox versions 11-42 directly support Graphite, the attacker could easily compromise a server and then serve the specially crafted font when the user renders a page from the server (since Graphite supports both local and server-based fonts).
Graphite is a package that can be used to create “smart fonts” capable of displaying writing systems with various complex behaviors.
Basically Graphite’s smart fonts are just TrueType Fonts (TTF) with added extensions.
The issues that Talos identified include the following:

An exploitable denial of service vulnerability exists in the font handling of Libgraphite. A specially crafted font can cause an out-of-bounds read potentially resulting in an information leak or denial of service.

A specially crafted font can cause a buffer overflow resulting in potential code execution.

An exploitable NULL pointer dereference exists in the bidirectional font handling functionality of Libgraphite. A specially crafted font can cause a NULL pointer dereference resulting in a crash.

If a malicious font is provided then an arbitrary length buffer overflow can occur when handling context items.
The first denial of service issue results from a NULL pointer dereference.
The second denial of service issue results from an out of bounds read that can not only cause a DoS, but it can also cause a leak of information. When reading an invalid font where the local table size is set to 0, an out of bounds read will occur.

A new effort to distance android from Google (Chris)

For the desktop, something a lot like: Remix OS is Android for the desktop, and it works with nearly any PC , but community backed, fully out in the open.

I’d like this project to even eventually kick Linux in the butt once or twice, to really get some competition in the open source desktop area. So its not just open source desktop vs commercial.

Collaborative Editing Software (Noah)

Google Docs is great for those who like it. Personally I can’t stand the web based solution. It tries to hard to be a native software solution including things like CTRL C and CTRL V for copy paste. When in a browser though my mind immediately starts acting like it should given that I’m in a browser. What I’d really like is a piece of software that runs on the OS itself and allows for offline editing.

More Frustrated Mac Users switch to Linux (Chris)

For a certain class of user, the Mac OS X desktop can be very frustrating. Its suppose to just work, and a great many things do indeed just work.

But for us geeks, sometimes it crosses a few sacred lined, that must never be crossed.

Macports is a royal pain compared to Linux package managers.
Brew does not have enough software, is nowhere near the AUR, or Debian/Ubuntu repos.
The lack of proper home/end/pgup/pgdown keys is maddening.
It has just enough quirks that I can’t say it Just Works significantly more than a well configured Linux desktop.
Performance optimization of new software seems to end when it works smoothly on ‘current’ hardware, which means that it doesn’t take long for hardware to get branded ‘old’.
Very expensive eco-system, with no real “lockin” iOS devices do not depend on OS X.

FOSS Linux based Access Points (Noah)

I’ve long been in love with Unifi AP’s ruining busybox but I always have my finger on the pulse of the company for fear that they will some day pull support from Linux. To be fair I don’t think it’s likely since more and more people are deploying controllers on AWS. That said, I would love to see a distro geared to turn consumer grade routers into managed access points. OpenWRT is great until you have to deploy 500 of them.

Ubuntu goes with rolling “fork” or version (Chris)

Those of us that love rolling, but want to play with the latest Ubuntu toys finally have the perfect distro to land on.

Again, there are plenty of projects that almost fit the bill but what would really set me on fire would be an encrypted syncing client that runs as a small client in the dash communicating with other devices I have syncing. It would rely on no special service, would not require you to configure, or access through a web UI, and would be open source.

Professionally Produced High Quality Kodi Media Player (Noah)

There are loads of android based devices that can be loaded with Kodi and at every turn there is a new way to build a Kodi box. I don’t have the time to install and configure those boxes especially when they crash. I would love to see a premade box that has a reset button that comes pre-loaded with JUST Kodi (Not Android). The market is rich for media players and if everyone rallied around a single software set plugins, and stability, would be soon become issues of the past.

Ubuntu 16.10 ships, Unity8 is looking good. Gaming is NOT impacted negatively (Chris)

Unity traditionally introduces about a 10% frame rate cost when running a game.

Hopefully SteamOS continues to be a great gaming platform for average users. But a lot desktop Linux users are benefiting from the new Steam games, and Ubuntu + Unity should be the “best” experience on desktop Linux for gaming. It would generate a lot of good buzz, and give Unity8 the reputation of being “super fast”.

Native Production Quality Video Conferencing (Noah)

There are plenty of solutions to get your face on someone’s computer. Even solutions that work well on other platforms are crippled to some degree on Linux. Ideally this would utilize XMMP / SIP protocols and communicate directly with a socket not rely on a third party service.

Life Science Supercomputer RUNS LINUX

The new national supercomputer for life Sciences is physically installed at DTU Risø Campus, where highly redundant power (7 MW) and highly advanced energy efficient and dual redundant cooling technology is available. A dedicated national redundant high-speed network connects the supercomputer to the other DTU Campuses, University of Copenhagen and elsewhere such that it mimics the feel of having the facility in your basement. The machine currently acts as a backbone in the Danish ELIXIR node, where it collaborates across the whole European community on bioinformatics. The infrastructure links up into the European and international infrastructure encouraging the collaboration on the bleeding edge in the technology and life sciences arena.

The supercomputer is built using HP’s next generation of Apollo servers designed for high throughput and contain 16,048 cores of Intel’s state of the art Hashwell architecture, 96TB of global DDR4 high speed memory complemented by an ultra high speed infiniband interconnect. The supercomputer is named “Computerome” with ultra fast 3PB storage that can be expanded to 7.5 PB on the fly. The data is backed onto two 1 PB tape back up robots one on-site and second off-site in Lyngby. An additional layer of online data backup of 2PB is also maintained fully synchronized using long distance secure replication between Risø and Lyngby. The installation has an ultra high-density footprint, and is installed in 2x500KW high-density modular Tier IV containerized data center modules.

The system is designed using the bioinformatics reference architecture developed by CBS over the past 20 years and using the best practices in the industry. It has a full set of comprehensive systems management software tools and hot-spare hardware. The complete site is backed up by the premium support from the vendors. Compared to our current installation we are enlarging the compute capacity by a factor of 10 and the system is the largest of its type in Scandinavia and unique in Europe due to the fact it is specifically designed for life sciences workflows. At the time of writing (Summer 2014) the performance of the system brings it on to 86th place on the Top500 list, which consists of the 500 fastest computers in the world.

Ubuntu ‘Spyware’ Will Be Disabled In Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Is Continuing To Prep ZFS Support

Chad Miller of Canonical shared that “ZFS is right now 90% ready on (what will be) Ubuntu 16.04.” There still are new ZFS packages to land in the Ubuntu 16.04, but Chad has the current packages queued up in a PPA. These packages will allow for installing Ubuntu to a ZFS partition, but an EFI partition is still needed. Additionally, there’s no support in Ubuntu’s Ubiquity graphical installer for setting up an easy ZFS-based system.

EXT4 will obviously be the default file-system still for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Firefox OS will Power New Panasonic UHD TVs Unveiled at CES

Mycroft Adapt Intent Parser Released as LGPL

The Adapt Intent Parser is an open source software library for converting natural language into machine readable data structures. Adapt is lightweight and streamlined and is designed to run on devices with limited computing resources. Adapt takes in natural language and outputs a data structure that includes the intent, a match probability, a tagged list of entities. The software was developed at Mycroft AI by a team led by Sean Fitzgerald, formerly one of the developers of both Siri and Amazon Echo.

We look forward to what this partnership will bring in terms of innovation and community engagement, and have the highest hopes for a bright future in this respect.

The team finished another feature video this week. These feature videos will appear periodically through mid 2016. Each video highlights one or more Mycroft feature and shows it in every day use. Our first feature? Netflix, and the ability to “set a scene” using IoT integration.

School Bell in the UK – Runs Linux!

Fantastic show, keep up the good work.
I wanted to share my own small runs Linux with you. I’m an IT Tech working in a secondary school in the UK. I got fed-up of our old outdated lesson change bell system from the 70’s so i made a pi powered one. It uses cron to run a python script that turns the relay on for a set amount of time. The cron file is edited via the UI that runs on php, MySQL on top of Apache. Photos of the UI and the project build attached.

Privacy Badger, an Addon That Algorithmically Blocks Online Trackers

Online tracking has become a pervasive invisible reality of the modern web. Most sites you load are likely to be full of ads, tracking pixels, social media share buttons, and other invisible trackers all harvesting data about your web browsing. These trackers use cookies and other methods to read unique IDs associated with your browser, the result being that they record all the sites you visit as you browse around the internet. This sort of tracking is invisible to most web users, meaning they never get the option to agree to or opt-out of it. Today the EFF has launched the 1.0 version of Privacy Badger, an extension designed to prevent these trackers from accessing unique info about you and your browsing.

Firefox exploit found in the wild | Mozilla Security Blog

Yesterday morning, August 5, a Firefox user informed us that an advertisement on a news site in Russia was serving a Firefox exploit that searched for sensitive files and uploaded them to a server that appears to be in Ukraine. This morning Mozilla released security updates that fix the vulnerability. All Firefox users are urged to update to Firefox 39.0.3. The fix has also been shipped in Firefox ESR 38.1.1.

LibreOffice under the hood: progress to 5.0

Gtk3 backend: Wayland

An very rough, initial gtk3 port was hacked together long ago by yours truly to prototype LibreOffice online via gdk-broadway.
However thanks to Caolán McNamara (RedHat) who has done the 80% of the hard work to finish this, giving us a polished and complete VCL backend for gtk3.
His blog entry focuses on the importance of this for running LibreOffice natively under wayland – the previous gtk2 backend was heavily tied to raw X11 rendering, while the new gtk3 backend uses CPU rendering via the VCL headless backend, of which more below.

OpenGL rendering improvements

The OpenGL rendering backend also significantly matured in this version, allowing us to talk directly to the hardware to accelerate
much of our rendering, with large numbers of bug fixes and improvements.

LibreOffice 5.0 Is a Milestone Release for Ubuntu Touch

LibreOffice will land on Ubuntu Touch

The developers from The Document Foundation haven’t gone into much detail about their plans, but they have said that the office suite is coming to Android. Coupled with the things we already know about Ubuntu Touch, we can safely say that LibreOffice 5.0 will bring some very interesting changes to the mobile platform from Canonical.

“A new version for new endeavours: LibreOffice 5.0 is the cornerstone of the mobile clients on Android and Ubuntu Touch, as well as the upcoming cloud version. As such, LibreOffice 5.0 serves as the foundation of current developments and is a great platform to extend, innovate and collaborate!” reads the announcement from The Document Foundation.

Jolla Tablet – First Batch out of Factory

Last week was very busy for Jolla, but few issues delaying the process by couple of days were catch up during the weekend by hard working Sailors. The first batch of Jolla Tablets is now complete and is told to look great! This batch is pre-production batch delivered to selected developers and internal test personnel

July 27th all the components were ready to be mounted on the circuit boards in China. All that was missing was the circuit boards themselves, as the flight delivering them was delayed by couple of hours. This delay was short, and assembling the boards was started as planned without major issues.

Earlier delays with material preparation and board delivery forced Jolla to agree on a new schedule with the assembly factory. July 30th, circuit boards were tested and the batch was sent to factory to be assembled on the next day. Surprise came with a glue machine, display assembly wasn’t possible

White House Petition to use FOSS whenever possible

We believe that the federal government, for the security of the information it manages and the efficient allocation of the public’s funds, should divest itself of costly proprietary software contracts wherever possible.

Healthcare.gov’s initial failings had much to do with the old, proprietary infrastructure that government contracting details required the application be built on. The US Navy recently spent considerable amounts of taxpayer money to extend support for Windows XP and Office 2003, both inherently obsolete and insecure.

Use of proprietary software costs our taxpayers needless money. It’s become clear that governments such as those of the UK and much of the European Union can adopt open source software and be better off for it. We should join them.

For those not familiar with elementary OS, this is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution (with Freya being based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, supported until April 2019) which ships with its own desktop environment, called Pantheon, and its own custom application for the most part, which look great, integrate very well with the desktop and ship with sane defaults so the user doesn’t have to tweak anything.

Valve games for Mesa/DRI developers

Hi,
At Collabora (my lovely dayjob), we’ve been working with Valve on
SteamOS. Valve are keen to give back to the community, and we’ve been
discussing ways they can help do that, including providing free access
to Valve games on Steam to Debian developers last year.

We’re happy to say that this has been extended to Mesa developers as
well, to say thanks for all the great work. If you have 25 commits or
more (an arbitrary number) to Mesa0 in the past five years, please
drop me an email (with ‘Steam’ in the subject) with your freedesktop
username and Steam username. We can then get you access to all past
and future Valve-produced games available on Steam[1].

Gnome 3.16 Hits

My Updated 3.16 Packages for GNOME Extensions by Michael Tunnell aka RottNKorpse

GNOME, desktop environment project, released their latest version of 3.16 recently so I decided to make an update to my previous extension package releases. I made a similar post last year for the GNOME 3.14 Release because some of my extension broke. Unfortunately, some of those extensions are still unmaintained and thus not updated for 3.16 either. So I am continuing to update some extensions for myself and anyone else who wants them.

Microsoft Adopts ODF

Microsoft has confirmed it will start supporting the Open Documents Format (ODF) in the next update to Office 365, following a lengthy battle against the UK government.
In 2014, Microsoft went against the government’s request to support ODF, claiming its own XML format was more heavily adopted. The UK government refutes the claim, stating that ODF allows users to not be boxed into one ecosystem.

Gnome 3.16 systemd-journal coming in next Tumbleweed snapshot

It’s official, Gnome will be in the next Tumbleweed snapshot and the development experience is highly anticipated. A clean installation works, but the guys are working on one last test before its released. We’re not promising an early Easter gift, but Tumbleweed users won’t have to wait long for Gnome’s latest upgrade.

A small change to Linux can be seen in Tumbleweed with a change from the syslog to systemd-journal; the systemd-journal as a binary file needs special tools to look at it.

systemd-journal has been in Fedora since Fedora 18

Audacity 2.1.0 Released

For a long time, we have wanted Real-Time Preview for effects.
It seemed nearly unachievable without major restructuring.
But with Audacity 2.1.0, we have it in
LADSPA, VST, and Audio Unit (OS X) effects!

How to Install and Run Android Apps in a Linux OS

Basically, anyone with a computer will be able to get an APK file and get it running inside the Google Chrome browser with a minimum amount of effort. What’s even more interesting is that the app only needs Google Chrome installer, it doesn’t need it to run. If you check the background processes, you will notice that a Chrome one is running along with the Arc Welder.

Kubuntu & Ubuntu 11.10 Review:

Ubuntu 11.10 Finds it self in a hard spot. The steady, and very needed improvements in Unity cost them in overall “on the box” bullet points for Ubuntu. Overall, the end result of this release is something that feels much better built than 11.04 did, but there’s no buzz term for you to hang that hat on.
Chris suspects this could be an ongoing perception issue for Ubuntu. They have additional work to do on Unity, and that will undoubtly take a great deal of their developer focus. This meas other fancy buzz features might get missed.
Perhaps Ubuntu could name, Unity releases. “Ubuntu 12.04 featuring Unity 3”. Then they could focus on all the improvements in that version of Unity that ships with that Ubuntu release.
