The Briggo Coffee Robot, Runs Linux

View the beast on imgur.com

The stories center on an Austin, Texas-based startup called Briggo, which has created a fully automated, one-stop coffee kiosk that churns out what it believes is a superior cup of joe. You can order and pay by smartphone, customize the brewing process to your precise specifications, and schedule it to be ready for pickup the minute you arrive. And it really doesn’t care if you say “venti” instead of “large.”

Ubuntu’s Drops Unity for Gnome

We will continue to produce the most usable open source desktop in the world, to maintain the existing LTS releases, to work with our commercial partners to distribute that desktop, to support our corporate customers who rely on it, and to delight the millions of IoT and cloud developers who innovate on top of it.

Our efforts were seen fragmentation not innovation. And industry has not rallied to the possibility, instead taking a ‘better the devil you know’ approach to those form factors, or investing in home-grown platforms.

We will shift our default Ubuntu desktop back to GNOME for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

am personally happy to see this convergence of efforts happening because I have for a long time felt that the general level of investment in the Linux desktop has not been great enough to justify the plethora of Linux desktops out there, so by now having reached a position where Canonical, Endless, Red Hat and Suse again share one desktop technology stack

Canonical Elimniating Jobs

Reportedly 30 to 60% of staff could be let go depending upon what comes of these outside investments. But the headcounts are going up in areas of security, cloud, and other money-making enterprise efforts.

In the best-case scenario, The Reg understands, departments would suffer a 30 per cent headcount reduction but in the worst it was 60 per cent. It’s not clear how many staff have gone, but Canonical is believed to have a workforce of 700.

  • Drop MIR/Unity for Wayland/Gnome (351 weight)
  • Release/GA Unity 8 (15 weight)
  • Easily, the most heavily requested, major change in this thread was for Ubuntu to drop MIR/Unity in favor of Wayland/Gnome. And that’s exactly what Mark Shuttleworth announced in an Ubuntu Insights post here today. There were a healthy handful of Unity 8 fans, calling for its GA, and more than a few HackerNews comments lamenting the end of Unity in this thread.

Welcome to Gnome and Wayland

Unity will Continue as a Fork

Lightworks 14 Released

Like a sequel to the Expendables, Lightworks 14.0 is packed to the rafters with cameos from features you always knew were there, but had sort of forgotten all about.

Part of the ‘old dog, new tricks‘ vibe is thanks to the top-to-toe redesign the non-linear editor is sporting. Lightworks’ new look (called “Fixed”, funnily enough) addresses the software’s most oft cited criticism: that it’s hard to use. Thew new layout aims to offer a “more organised” workspace, and help you discover, learn, and use the editor’s various features.

Light works supports Ubuntu 16.10 or later — sorry LTS users. You won’t be able to export to MP4 or MOV; you can’t import WMV; and there’s no FX plugin-support.

Noah,

I about jumped out of my chair when you started talking about the Exchange migration. We are going to be moving off of our Exchange server very soon. We are moving off of a 2007 Exchange server because it is not supported after Office 2013. I’m currently trying to push my company away from O365 to something like Google. There is the obvious Linux bias, but I’ve also heard enough horror stories from friends who have already moved to O365 that I want to avoid it if at all possible.

I hope you cover this migration for show content especially the user experience after the move. The post migration user experience is one of the biggest concerns with moving to Google.

Thank you for hard work and insight you bring to the show.

Hey Chris and Noah!

I have just recently found your network and shows and have been listening to them and trying to catch up with all the previous epiisodes of Linux Action Show at the moment. I work for my father at his small business as a union plumber and system admin. I have been trying to get the okay to switch his file server from Windozes to Linux with the superior file systems and better stability, Windozes has to be restarted every week or performance goes too all hell and is utterly slow, but the only thing holding him from pulling the trigger and giving me the okay to finally switch is quickbooks. I remember Noah saying some about a quickbooks alternative in the early 400’s episodes with system 76 being its parent company. We file host the company file and he doesn’t like other people and their computers “the cloud” handling his data especially for his company. The way Noah explained it even though he has the software company do the hosting is that you could host it yourself if you wanted
and I think this might be just the thing I need to convince my father to start the switch.

Ps. keep up the amazing work guys love your show and all the content you bring!

Ubuntu Tablet Pushed Back

Bq has quietly pushed back the shipping estimate of the world’s first true Ubuntu tablet by one week.

Updating shipping information for both HD and FHD models of tablet on its website, Bq say “Deliveries will take place starting from the second half of April“.

It previously read: “Deliveries will take place starting from the second week of April” (emphasis ours).

Not a huge delay but a delay nonetheless.

If you pre-ordered the tablet on the assumption of getting it this week this is us telling why you may be waiting a little longer for a dispatch notice.

The delay was pointed out to us by reader Jack F., who explained in his e-mail

“I pre-ordered the BQ tablet thinking that deliveries would take place second week of April. BQ have changed this to second half on their site without notifying via email it would be delayed. Would be good for other customers to know.”

itch.io Open Market Place trying to get App on Steam

Itch.io is an open marketplace for indie games. According to their About page, if you’ve made a game you can easily upload it, set the price, and sell your game through Itch.io, and “It’s never necessary to get votes, likes, or follows to get your content approved…”

Speaking of which, the creators of Itch.io have a desktop client called Itch, and while it’s already available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, they’re going a step further by putting Itch on Steam Greenlight, where they hope to get enough votes, likes, or follows to make it onto Steam proper. Which sounds a bit strange, trying to launch an app for a games marketplace on another games marketplace. As one commenter puts it: “storefrontception.”

Linus Torvalds Gives TED Talk

Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux operating system and the Git source code management system, opened the “Code Power” session at the recent TED2016 conference, speaking in an interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson.

In the talk, Torvalds, whose blunt approach in dealing with people is well known, stated, “I’m actually not a people person. I don’t really love other people, but I do love other people who get involved in my project.”

In the TED talk, Torvalds admitted that he is sometimes “myopic, when it comes to other people’s feelings…” However, he said, “What I love about open source is that it really allows different people to work together.”

Nonetheless, typically self-deprecating Torvalds doesn’t see himself as a visionary. Instead, he says: “I’m an engineer. I’m happy with the people who are wandering around looking at the stars but I am looking at the ground and I want to fix the pothole before I fall in.”

I actually am very happy with the Linux desktop, and I started the project for my own needs, and my needs are very much fulfilled. That’s why, to me, it’s not a failure. I would obviously love for Linux to take over that world too, but it turns out it’s a really hard area to enter. I’m still working on it. It’s been 25 years. I can do this for another 25. I’ll wear them down.”

PC gaming is expanding, Valve’s GDC 2015 announcements recap

Valve Controller Final

Valve attended GDC in full force this year and talked about a lot of stuff. Here’s everything they talked about it in one post.

More than 50 titles are highlighted, including three of PCWorld’s favorite games of 2014The Talos Principle, Transistor, _and our Game of the Year, _Wasteland 2—and a slew of other spectacular titles like Metro Redux, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Civilization: Beyond Earth, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, _and _Goat Simulator, among many others.

This drop to just over 1.0% is the lowest numbers we’ve seen for Linux’s representation on Steam in quite a number of months. However, it’s not a huge surprise.

With the Vulkan API still in flux and not finalized until later this year, Valve has been developing their own Intel GPU reference driver for Vulkan to help early adopters boot-strap their code. Valve said during their presentation today at GDC2015 that this Intel Linux driver will be open-sourced, but they haven’t provided a time-frame for doing so.

VMware alleged to have violated Linux’s open source license for years

Christoph Hellwig

Linux kernel developer Christoph Hellwig filed the suit in the district court of Hamburg, Germany with funding from the nonprofit Software Freedom Conservancy, which works to “promote, improve, develop, and defend” free and open source software. The case centers on “a combined work that VMware allegedly created by combining their own code (‘vmkernel’) with portions of Linux’s code, which was licensed only under GPLv2,” _the group said in an FAQ describing the lawsuit._

Software Freedom Conservancy

Software Freedom Conservancy announces today Christoph Hellwig’s lawsuit against VMware in the district court of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. This is the regretful but necessary next step in both Hellwig and Conservancy’s ongoing effort to convince VMware to comply properly with the terms of the GPLv2, the license of Linux and many other Open Source and Free Software included in VMware’s ESXi products.

No reboot patching comes to Linux 4.0

A Lightworks developer talks about the kind of issue you meet when coding for an NLE on Linux

In recent weeks, some of Lightworks’ Linux users started to report reduced performance in both new and old versions of the software. After some investigation, it appeared that the slow-down was only affecting systems with a Linux kernel newer than 3.13. In tests, kernel performance in 3.14 did seem to be slightly worse than earlier versions, but nothing that could explain the symptoms being experienced by users. So what could possibly explain the sudden change in behaviour?

In the not too distant future the Linux desktop will face a landscape comprised of users running Wayland, Mir, and X11. Ubuntu will be rolling out their first generation Qt based desktop environment, and developers are crying fragmentation.

But how would we shape the future if we could wave a magic wand? And is fragmentation a real problem in practice?

Fragmentation Challenges

  • Two big ways to look at this, the core, and the desktop.

Linux distributions are also unified at the core library level. In addition to the kernel, you have projects like X.org, glibc, gstreamer, Gnome, QT, webkit, CUPS, clutter, etc. These are all example of core libraries that generally are included in almost every variant of mobile Linux; Chrome, Android, MeeGo, WebOS, LiMo, etc. They all use these same “base” components.

Bird gave a thought-provoking talk with a conclusion that will probably surprise some: he thinks a \”good\” fork of the kernel is the right approach to meld Linux and the \”Internet of Things\”.
