Linux Running on Playstation 4 Revealed By Hacker Fail overflow, Playstation Jailbreak Could Actually Boost Sales of the Console!

Therefore, when hackers announced earlier in December that it is possible to jailbreak the PlayStation 4, it came out as quite an achievement. This step has been taken further by another group of hackers name failoverflow. They have jailbroken a PS4 and further loaded it with Linux.

Sony Orbis OS is run by the Sony console and it is based on Linux FreeBSD. It was further reported by Engadget that this hack exploits the Webkit bug in order to gain access to the kernel. It also works on Orbis version 1.74. It is also a much older version than the current 3.11 on the PS4. Moreover, the bug has since been patched.

However, it seems like the hacker group’s method can be tailored to further work on future consoles. The first thing done by the group during the jailbreak demonstration was running a Game Boy Advance emulator on the Linux PS4. At the same time, they fired up a copy of Pokemon Emerald.

Fedora 24 Beta released!

This new release also features GNOME 3.20. There have been changes to the theming API in GTK+ 3. At this time the API is under heavy development and will not remain stable. As a result, applications that use custom CSS theming for example, may have rendering issues. This could include default applications that come with Fedora 24 Beta Workstation. We request that users try out their favorite GTK+ 3 based applications and report bugs to the upstream developers so they can be fixed in time for the final release.

Linux Mint: Too Big to Fail?

Linux Mint 18 will no longer provide separate, codec-free installation media for OEM and magazine distribution. Instead, the distribution will ship without multimedia support while making it easy for users to acquire media codecs during the initial installation of the operating system. “OEM installation disks and NoCodec images will no longer be released. Instead, similar to other distributions, images will ship without codecs and will support both traditional and OEM installations. This will reduce our release cycle to 4 separate events and the production and testing of 12 ISO images. Multimedia codecs can be installed easily: From the welcome screen, by clicking on “Multimedia Codecs”, or from the main menu, by clicking on “Menu”->”Sound and Video”->”Install Multimedia Codecs”, or during the installation process, by clicking a checkbox option.” Additional information on the upcoming release of Linux Mint 18 can be found in the project’s monthly newsletter.

Why Mint? We checked the Internet and….

When I reflect on why I’ve chosen Mint over Ubuntu in recent years, it came down to:

Seriously disliking Unity. (But now I can install Cinnamon packages on Ubuntu easily.)
Easy ability to play DVD’s. (But it just got a tiny bit harder; not significantly.)
Wanting to give Shuttleworth the middle finger regarding forcing Unity down people’s throats. (But I think my finger has now been extended long enough.)

KDE Ships KDE Applications 15.08.2

October 13, 2015. Today KDE released the second stability update for KDE Applications 15.08.

This release contains only bugfixes and translation updates, providing a safe and pleasant update for everyone.

More than 30 recorded bugfixes include improvements to ark, gwenview, kate, kbruch, kdelibs, kdepim, lokalize and umbrello.

This release also includes Long Term Support version of KDE Development Platform 4.14.13.

Tips and tricks for keeping your Linux box in top performance.

If you gotta swap, swap on a sep disk

Creating your swap files on a separate disk can also help quite a bit, especially if your machine swaps frequently. It happens if you do not have enough RAM for your environment. Using KDE with all the features and applications that come along may require several GiB of memory, whereas a tiny window manager with console applications will perfectly fit in less than 512 MiB of memory.

XFS – ArchWiki

Although the extent-based nature of XFS and the delayed allocation strategy it uses significantly improves the file system’s resistance to fragmentation problems, XFS provides a filesystem defragmentation utility (xfs_fsr, short for XFS filesystem reorganizer) that can defragment the files on a mounted and active XFS filesystem. It can be useful to view XFS fragmentation periodically.

Is it REALLY worth Tuning your IO scheduler?

The kernel supports different schedulers for storage disk in-/output (IO). These are the CFQ scheduler (Completely Fair Queuing), the NOOP and Deadline. Another, the BFQ (Budget Fair Scheduler) is available in the linux-zen kernel.

A HDD has spinning disks and head that move physically to the required location. Such structure leads to following characteristics:

random latency it quite high, for modern HDD it is ~10ms (ignoring a disk controller write buffer).
sequential access provides much higher throughput. In this case head needs to move less distance.

In case if we have a lot of running processes that make IO requests to different parts of storage (i.e. random access) then we can expect that a disk handles ~100 IO requests per second. Because modern systems can easily generate load much higher than 100 requests per second we have a queue of requests that have to wait for access to the storage. One way to improve throughput is to linearize access, i.e. order waiting requests by its logical address and always choose the closest request. Historically this was the first Linux IO scheduler called elevator scheduler.

One of the problems with the elevator algorithm is that it makes suffer processes with sequential access. Such processes read a block of data then process it for several microseconds then read next block and so on. The elevator scheduler does not know that the process is going to read another block nearby and, thus, moves to another request at some other location. To overcome the problem anticipatory IO scheduler was added. For synchronous requests this algorithm waits for a short amount of time before moving to another request.

While these schedulers try to improve total throughput they also might leave some unlucky requests waiting for a very long time.

Going my own way

In the end it’s a mixture of just being tired of dealing with the crap associated with Linux development and realising that by continuing to put up with it I’m tacitly encouraging its continuation, but I can’t be bothered any more. And, thanks to the magic of free software, it turns out that I can avoid putting up with the bullshit in the kernel community and get to work on the things I’m interested in doing. So here’s a kernel tree with patches that implement a BSD-style securelevel interface. Over time it’ll pick up some of the power management code I’m still working on, and we’ll see where it goes from there. But, until there’s a significant shift in community norms on LKML, I’ll only be there when I’m being paid to be there. And that’s improved my mood immeasurably.

A New Linux File-System Aims For Speed While Having ZFS/Btrfs-Like Features

This new file-system is Bcachefs. BcacheFS is based on _BCache, the Linux kernel block layer cache_for pairing a large-capacity hard drive with a low-capacity, high-performance solid-state drive to act as a cache. In developing this block layer cache, Kent Overstreet (the primary Bcache/Bcachefs) developer realized they were basically writing their own file-system in the process. He explained, “the bcache codebase has been evolving/metastasizing into a full blown, general purpose posix filesystem – a modern COW filesystem with checksumming, compression, multiple devices, caching, and eventually snapshots and all kinds of other nifty features…I and the other people working on bcache realized that what we were working on was, almost by accident, a good chunk of the functionality of a full blown filesystem – and there was a really clean and elegant design to be had there if we took it and ran with it.”

PERFORMANCE:

I’m not really focusing on performance while there’s still correctness issues to
work on – so there’s lots of things that still need to be further optimized, but
the current performance numbers are still I think good enough to be interesting.

In a broad-ranging question and answer session, Linus Torvalds, Linux’s founder, shared his thoughts on the current state of open source and Linux.

Linus Torvalds: Security is never going to be perfect

Linus seemed as excited about containers as a fish would be about a bicycle. “I am so happy that the kernel tends to be fairly far removed from all these issues, all the buzzwords and all the new technologies,” he said. “We end up being in a situation where we only care about us working on and how people use the kernel. I am so focused on the kernel that I don’t even care very much. We see when people need technologies from us to implement all of this, obviously there is c-groups and virtualization, if you do it that way. So we see that side of it. But at the same time, I don’t get involved in politics between all the different groups and all the stuff that goes on top of the kernel. And I am really happy I don’t have to.”

Torvalds: Don’t talk to me about containers and other buzzwords

“I am a very plodding, pedestrian kind of person,” Torvalds said during a Q&A session with Linux Foundation boss Jim Zemlin at LinuxCon in Seattle on Wednesday. “I look six months ahead. I look ahead at this release and I know what’s coming up in the next one.

“I don’t think planning 10 years ahead is necessarily very sane. Because if you think about Linux ten years back and where Linux was ten years ago, trying to plan for where we are now would have been completely insane.”

I visited the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago recently and one of the exhibits was about robotics. I spotted one robot that recognizes faces and appears to be controlled by a Linux box.

I would also like to share my recent first experience with System76. I purchased a Meerkat to replace my HTPC that just died. The day after I made the purchase, the Meerkat went on sale. System76 called to notify me that because of the sale, I could either get my money back for the amount of the sale, or I could get a free memory upgrade and still get some money back!
Frankly, I’m astounded at that level of customer service. I’ve never experienced anything like it before and I thought it deserved a mention.

Google’s Linux Router

Google and TP-Link unveiled a Gentoo Linux based “OnHub” WiFi-ac router for consumers with 13 antennas, Bluetooth, and ZigBee, controlled by a mobile app.

Google’s embedded and IoT horizons appear to be expanding beyond its own Nest subsidiary. The company, which is now technically just another company in the new Alphabet umbrella organization, has partnered with router-maker TP-Link to launch a $200 WiFi router, and potentially, a home automation router. Later this year, Google says it will announce other OnHub branded devices, including an Asus-made device.

The OnHub is available for pre-order at $200 at a variety of locations including the Google Store. Retail availability is set for Aug. 31. More information may be found in the Google OnHub announcement, the Google OnHub page, and the TP-Link OnHub page.

Germany to Ditch Linux for Windows

Two influential politicians in a German city that ditched Microsoft in favour of Linux are agitating for a switch back to Windows.

The councillors from Munich’s conservative CSU party have called the custom version of Ubuntu installed on their laptops “cumbersome to use” and “of very limited use”.

The letter from the two senior members of the city’s IT committee asks mayor Dieter Reiter to consider removing the Linux-based OS and to install Windows with Microsoft Office.

The city spent years migrating about 15,000 staff to Limux, a custom-version of Ubuntu, and other open source software – a move the city said had saved it more than €10m ($11m).

4.0 doesn’t have all that much special. Much have been
made of the new kernel patching infrastructure, but realistically,
that not only wasn’t the reason for the version number change, we’ve
had much bigger changes in other versions. So this is very much a

Why I think btrfs remains the future for those who want it

Chris on the latest episode of Unplugged took the time to vent his latest frustration with btrfs. The issue in question is a bug that causes arch not to boot on 3.19.1-3, 3.18.9 and 3.14.35. I and quite a few others have experienced this on our Arch btrfs setups and I enjoyed fixing this issue for the same reason I enjoyed fixing libxcursor and radeon bugs that caused my system not to boot.

Easy rollback after update (btrfs and grub).

Hope anyone can find this useful when dealing with bleeding edge breakage

Versions from 3.15 up to 3.16.1 suffer from a deadlock that was observed during heavy rsync workloads with compression on, it’s recommended to use 3.16.2 and newer

Fedora Server 22 Is Using The XFS File-System By Default

The server edition of Fedora 22 is using the XFS file-system by default rather than EXT4.

Using the XFS file-system as the default within an LVM has been part of the Fedora Server technical spec while with Fedora 22 it’s finally happened. The default layout for Fedora Server 22 installations is using XFS atop LVM while /boot is outside the LVM setup.

Atom Shell

Ozon OS “Hydrogen” beta ships with four GNOME Shell extensions installed by default: Atom Dock, Atom Launcher, Atom Panel and of course, User Themes so Ozon OS can use its cool GNOME Shell theme out of the box.

Atom Dock is, like its name suggest, a “dock” or application launcher/switcher, that’s displayed at the bottom of the screen and uses intellihide by default (it hides if it overlaps any window in the active window group, but it can be brought up using the mouse pointer). Just like the default GNOME Shell Dash (which is disabled in Ozon OS), you can pin applications to the dock, open a new application window and access the application view

Steam hits 1,000 Linux games days after Valve’s big Steam Machine reveal

At the moment, there are 1005 games that support Linux and SteamOS on Steam. That’s out of 4817 total games for all platforms on Steam, or 20.8% of all the games on Steam. And that’s just games—not DLC items, software, demos, or trailers. But, if you expand the search to include everything, there’s 1856 items in the Linux + SteamOS category.

The Linux Foundation wants to rein in its insult-spewing leader

On Monday, the Linux Foundation kinda sorta slapped him on the wrist when they issued a new “Code of Conflict” policy that declared “personal insults or abuse are not welcome.”

Linux kernel patch releases “code of conduct”

Some would say that the center of the problem is Linus Torvalds himself, that his blunt and cavalier attitude towards dealing with other developers has lead to too much tension within the ranks. However, when one man holds such a massive responsibility for that much code (and the patches submitted therein), it only makes sense that he carry a sharp stick and tone. The problem comes when contributors begin calling out Torvalds publicly. This happened recently when Lennart Poettering called Torvalds out for encouraging hate speech and attacks. Poettering went so far to say that the Linux community is a “sick place to be in.”

Whether this tactic pans out to solve the growing friction within the Linux kernel commuinity remains to be seen. This kind of effort tends to shift power from the individual to those who enforce the code, according to Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group.

NTP’s Fate Hinges On “Father Time”

In April, one of the open source code movement’s first and biggest success stories, the Network Time Protocol, will reach a decision point, writes Charlie Babcock. At 30 years old, will NTP continue as the preeminent time synchronization system for Macs, Windows, and Linux computers and most servers on networks? Or will this protocol go into a decline marked by drastically slowed development, fewer bug fixes, and greater security risks for the computers that use it? We explicitly say you can download Luna for free, we include a pay-what-you-want (including $0) text entry with $10 pre-filled, and we also include an explicit “Download Luna for free” link that simply sets the text entry to $0 for you.

Next, you’re given the payment/download dialog:

The text entry matches whatever was on the first screen, but we again let you change it to anything you’d like, including $0.

Users have downloaded Luna over 2,000,000 times. Around 99.875% of those users download without paying. Of the tiny 0.125% who do, the most common payments are the default $10, followed by $1. But again, only a tiny fraction of one percent of users even decide to pay in the first place.

Furthermore, we’ve received feedback that this flow is deceiving. It doesn’t make it clear enough that there are multiple payment options and it includes a payments step even if you’ve chosen to enter $0.

elementary misses the point « Blog Fiasco

A recent post on the elementary blog about how they ask for payment on download created a bit of a stir this week. One particular sentence struck a nerve (it has since been removed from the post): “We want users to understand that they’re pretty much cheating the system when they choose not to pay for software.”

AutoKey

AutoKey is a desktop automation utility for Linux and X11. It allows you to manage collection of scripts and phrases, and assign abbreviations and hotkeys to these. This allows you to execute a script or insert text on demand in whatever program you are using.

AutoKey features a subset of the capabilities of the popular Windows-based AutoHotkey, but is not intended as a full replacement. For a Linux-based implementation of AutoHotkey, see IronAHK. AutoKey’s GUI features a number of concepts and features inspired by the Windows program PhraseExpress.

There are many challenges that go along with building any software. Some are obvious and some are more subtle. However, some challenges, as I’ve recently realized, aren’t related to computers at all. Sometime in late October, my wife and I decided that it would be fun to put our house on the market, and “test the waters”. We have been talking about moving out of Arlington, TX (a relatively big city) for years, and heading towards a bit more land, and less city. As fate would have it, we had an offer on our house within 1 week, and all of a sudden needed to find a new house, make repairs, pack, rent a moving truck, etc… etc… Needless to say, this required a lot of time and energy.
