LinuxCon’s surprise keynote speaker Linus Torvalds muses about open-source software | ZDNet

Linus

In a broad-ranging question and answer session, Linus Torvalds, Linux’s founder, shared his thoughts on the current state of open source and Linux.

Linus Torvalds: Security is never going to be perfect

Linus

Linus seemed as excited about containers as a fish would be about a bicycle. “I am so happy that the kernel tends to be fairly far removed from all these issues, all the buzzwords and all the new technologies,” he said. “We end up being in a situation where we only care about us working on and how people use the kernel. I am so focused on the kernel that I don’t even care very much. We see when people need technologies from us to implement all of this, obviously there is c-groups and virtualization, if you do it that way. So we see that side of it. But at the same time, I don’t get involved in politics between all the different groups and all the stuff that goes on top of the kernel. And I am really happy I don’t have to.”

Torvalds: Don’t talk to me about containers and other buzzwords

“I am a very plodding, pedestrian kind of person,” Torvalds said during a Q&A session with Linux Foundation boss Jim Zemlin at LinuxCon in Seattle on Wednesday. “I look six months ahead. I look ahead at this release and I know what’s coming up in the next one.

“I don’t think planning 10 years ahead is necessarily very sane. Because if you think about Linux ten years back and where Linux was ten years ago, trying to plan for where we are now would have been completely insane.”

Mark Shuttleworth says Snappy was born long before CoreOS and the Atomic Project | ITworld

Shuttleworth

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical and Ubuntu, made a surprise visit at LinuxCon. I sat down with him for a video interview and talked about Ubuntu on IBM’s new LinuxONE systems, Canonical’s plans for containers, open source in the enterprise space and much more.

LinuxCon: Core Infrastructure Initiative Boosts Security Efforts

The Linux Foundation announced the new badging effort in a press conference with media and analysts. She said the program is akin to the badges used on the popular Github code-development and -sharing site.

Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago – RUNS LINUX

Runs Linux Screen Shot

Sent in By: Anton C

I visited the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago recently and one of the exhibits was about robotics. I spotted one robot that recognizes faces and appears to be controlled by a Linux box.

I would also like to share my recent first experience with System76. I purchased a Meerkat to replace my HTPC that just died. The day after I made the purchase, the Meerkat went on sale. System76 called to notify me that because of the sale, I could either get my money back for the amount of the sale, or I could get a free memory upgrade and still get some money back!
Frankly, I’m astounded at that level of customer service. I’ve never experienced anything like it before and I thought it deserved a mention.

Germany to Ditch Linux for Windows

LiMux

Two influential politicians in a German city that ditched Microsoft in favour of Linux are agitating for a switch back to Windows.

The councillors from Munich’s conservative CSU party have called the custom version of Ubuntu installed on their laptops “cumbersome to use” and “of very limited use”.

The letter from the two senior members of the city’s IT committee asks mayor Dieter Reiter to consider removing the Linux-based OS and to install Windows with Microsoft Office.

The city spent years migrating about 15,000 staff to Limux, a custom-version of Ubuntu, and other open source software – a move the city said had saved it more than €10m ($11m).

LinuxCon 2014

LinuxCon North America | Linux Conferences and Linux Events | The Linux Foundation

LinuxCon is the place to learn from the best and the brightest, delivering content from the leading maintainers, developers and project leads in the Linux community and from around the world. There’s simply no other event in North America where developers, sys admins, architects and all types and levels of technical talent gather together under one roof for education, collaboration and problem-solving to further the Linux platform.

LinuxCon Day 1: Open Source is Eating the World | Open Source Today

Wednesday was the first day of LinuxCon and CloudOpen North America 2014 in Chicago. The event began with a keynote speech from Jim Zemlin on the State of Linux where he touched on a wide range of new developments and issues in the Linux Industry. He opened his keynote by stating “Linux Represents one of the greatest shared technology investments in the history of computing.” A testament to the adoption of Linux in nearly every single modern industry.

The IUS Community Project is a brain child of the RPM Development Team at
Rackspace Hosting. Since 2006, we have provided and maintain packages for
the latest versions of PHP/MySQL and other common software on Red Hat
Enterprise Linux, because a lot of our customers strongly demand it. Internally
we maintain a number of package sets for an audience of thousands of production
servers. Until now, these packages have only been available internally to
Rackspace customers. After a while we started thinking: Why not make this
available publicly for everyone to benefit?

Linux Founder Linus Torvalds ‘Still Wants the Desktop’

Kernel Panel

Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman moderated the discussion and commented that Linux already runs everywhere. He asked Torvalds where he thinks Linux should go next. “I still want the desktop,” Torvalds said as the audience erupted into boisterous applause.

The challenge on the desktop is not a kernel problem, Torvalds said. “It’s a whole infrastructure problem. I think we’ll get there one day.”

Ditching Linux for Windows? The truth isn’t that simple, says Munich

No says the council, in spite of numerous reports to the contrary. Suggestions the council has decided to back away from Linux are wrong, according to council spokesman Stefan Hauf.

He said the council’s recently elected mayor Dieter Reiter has instead simply commissioned a report into the future IT system for the council.

“The new mayor has asked the administration to gather the facts so we can decide and make a proposal for the city council how to proceed in future,” he said.

“Not only for Limux but for all of IT. It’s about the organisation, the costs, performance and the useability and satisfaction of the users.”

The study, being conducted by internal IT staff at the council, will consider which operating systems and software packages – both proprietary and open source – would best satisfy this criteria. The study is not, as has been reported, solely focused around the question of whether to drop Limux and move back to Windows, he said.

Microsoft Lobby Denies the State of Chile Access to Free Software

Fresh on the heels of the entire Munich and Linux debacle, another story involving Microsoft and free software has popped up across the world, in Chile. A prolific magazine from the South American country says that the powerful Microsoft lobby managed to turn around a law that would allow the authorities to use free software.

Linux Foundation Debuts Linux Certification Effort

The Linux Foundation announced today its first Linux certifications for IT professionals. The new certifications were announced at the LinuxCon conference.

The two new designations are the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) and Linux Foundation Certified Engineer (LFCE).

The new certifications mark the first time the Linux Foundation itself has offered formal certification.

This release brings many new features, with the biggest change being IPv6 support in most every portion of the system. There are also a number of bug fixes, and touch ups in general.

pfSense Gold is our $99 per year premium membership subscription program, designed to provide special benefits to our members while supporting ongoing development of the Open Source pfSense project.

The following companies sell the hardware the developers use. This means purchasing from these vendors ensures
the device is thoroughly tested, and if compatibility problems come up in future releases they will likely be quickly
found and fixed more.

Other Nice Features:

  • NTP Server for your LAN, can even pull from a serial attached GPS

  • Wake on LAN. Add a MAC address from a PC on your LAN, then wake it from the firewall as needed.

  • Easy to manage uPNP for balanced security and convenience.

  • High Availability Sync

pfsync transfers state insertion, update, and deletion messages between firewalls. Each firewall sends these messages out via multicast on a specified interface, using the PFSYNC protocol (IP Protocol 240). It also listens on that interface for similar messages from other firewalls, and imports them into the local state table.

  • 10-STABLE is expected to be branched in October, to begin the process of stabilizing development
  • Initial testing shows it works well
  • May be merged to 9.X, but due to changes to the VM subsystem this will require a lot of work, and is currently not a priority for the Radeon KMS developer
  • Still suffers from the syscons / KMS switcher issues, same as Intel video

VeriSign Embraces FreeBSD

  • “BSD is quite literally at the very core foundation of what makes the Internet work”
  • Using BSD and Linux together provides reliability and diversity
  • Verisign gives back to the community, runs vBSDCon
  • “You get comfortable with something because it works well for your particular purposes and can find a good community that you can interact with. That all rang true for us with FreeBSD.”

fetch/libfetch get a makeover

  • Adds support for SSL certificate verification
  • Requires root ca bundle (security/root_ca_nss)
  • Still missing TLS SNI support (Server Name Indication, allows name based virtual hosts over SSL)

FreeBSD Foundation Semi-Annual Newsletter

  • The FreeBSD Foundation took the 20th anniversary of FreeBSD as an opportunity to look at where the project is, and where it might want to go
  • The foundation sets out some basic goals that the project should strive towards:
    • Unify User Experience
      • “ensure that knowledge gained mastering one task translates to the next”
      • “if we do pay attention to consistency, not only will FreeBSD be easier to use, it will be easier to learn”
    • Design for Human and Programmatic Use
      • 200 machines used to be considered a large deployment, with high density servers, blades, virtualization and the cloud, that is not so anymore
      • “the tools we provide for status reporting, configuration, and control of FreeBSD just do not scale or fail to provide the desired user experience”
      • “The FreeBSD of tomorrow needs to give programmability and human interaction equal weighting as requirements”
    • Embrace New Ways to Document FreeBSD
      • More ‘Getting Started’ sections in documentation
      • Link to external How-Tos and other documentation
      • “upgrade the cross-referencing and search tools built into FreeBSD, so FreeBSD, not an Internet search engine, is the best place to learn about FreeBSD”
  • Spring Fundraising Campaign, April 17 – May 31, raised a total of $219,806 from 12 organizations and 365 individual donors. In the same period last year we raised a total of $23,422 from 2 organizations and 53 individuals
  • Funds donated to the FreeBSD Foundation have been used on these projects recently:
  • Capsicum security-component framework
  • Transparent superpages support of the FreeBSD/ARM architecture
  • Expanded and faster IPv6
  • Native in-kernel iSCSI stack
  • Five New TCP Congestion Control Algorithms
  • Direct mapped I/O to avoid extra memory copies
  • Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) boot environment
  • Porting FreeBSD to the Genesi Efika MX SmartBook laptop (ARM-based)
  • NAND Flash filesystem and storage stack
  • Funds were also used to sponsor a number of BSD focused conferences: BSDCan, EuroBSDCon, AsiaBSDCon, BSDDay, NYCBSDCon, vBSDCon, plus Vendor summits and Developer summits
  • It is important that the foundation receive donations from individuals, to maintain their tax exempt status in the USA. Even a donation of $5 helps make it clear that the FreeBSD Foundation is backed by a large community, not only a few vendors
