I just started watching LAS starting in January, and last week I overheard co-workers talking about Linux and I had to jump in and tell them about LAS. Was behind on my podcast watching but just finished 462. Sad to see this chapter ending but happy to see what you both will bring to us next. One thing that would love to see in Ask Noah or maybe in a monthly’ish podcast: do picks and dist reviews when the make scene. Do your top 5-10 app pick and what new dist came out. I really like those, but some times the picks and dist felt like you were forcing it too much. I have enjoyed LAS and really hope to more from Jupiter broadcasting.

Vault7 – HIVE Targets Linux

The CIA has developed automated multi-platform malware attack and control
systems covering Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, Linux and more, such
as EDB’s “HIVE” and the related “Cutthroat” and “Swindle” tools, which are
_described in the examples section below
._

HIVE

HIVE is a multi-platform CIA malware suite and its associated control
software. The project provides customizable implants for Windows, Solaris,
MikroTik (used in internet routers) and Linux platforms and a Listening
Post (LP)/Command and Control (C2) infrastructure to communicate with
these implants.

The implants are configured to communicate via HTTPS with the webserver of a
cover domain; each operation utilizing these implants has a separate cover
domain and the infrastructure can handle any number of cover domains.

Each cover domain resolves to an IP address that is located at a commercial
VPS (Virtual Private Server) provider. The public-facing server forwards all
incoming traffic via a VPN to a ‘Blot’ server that handles actual connection
requests from clients. It is setup for optional SSL client authentication: if
a client sends a valid client certificate (only implants can do that), the
connection is forwarded to the ‘Honeycomb’ toolserver that communicates with
the implant; if a valid certificate is missing (which is the case if someone
tries to open the cover domain website by accident), the traffic is forwarded
to a cover server that delivers an unsuspicious looking website.

The Honeycomb toolserver receives exfiltrated information from the implant; an
operator can also task the implant to execute jobs on the target computer, so
the toolserver acts as a C2 (command and control) server for the implant.

Similar functionality (though limited to Windows) is provided by the RickBobby
project.

See the classified user and
developer guides for HIVE.

What time period is covered?

The years 2013 to 2016. The sort order of the pages within each level is determined by date (oldest first).

WikiLeaks has obtained the CIA’s creation/last modification date for each page but these do not yet appear for technical reasons. Usually the date can be discerned or approximated from the content and the page order. If it is critical to know the exact time/date contact WikiLeaks.

What is “Vault 7”

“Vault 7” is a substantial collection of material about CIA activities obtained by WikiLeaks.

When was each part of “Vault 7” obtained?

Part one was obtained recently and covers through 2016. Details on the other parts will be available at the time of publication.

ESA astronaut Tim Peake will take part in an experiment dubbed ‘SUPVIS-M’ (Supervisory Control of Mars Yard Rover) in which he will operate, from the International Space Station (ISS), a UK-built rover – Bridget – located in the Airbus Mars Yard in Stevenage, UK.

Getting started with Linux:

  1. Obtain the Ubuntu Install image from ubuntu.com

  2. Write the Ubuntu installation image to a USB flash media device. On PC use Etcher or Rufus & on a mac, use Etcher. Be careful to make sure the flash drive is chosen in this step.

  3. Once that is finished, eject the drive and insert the drive into your PC/Mac

  4. When booting the PC/Mac press F2 (or your computer’s hotkey to access the boot menu), or if you’re running a newer version of Windows such as 8 or 10 boot into Windows, press start, go to advanced start options, choose UEFI Settings, Disable secureboot. Boot back into Windows repeat the steps to get back into UEFI and choose to boot off of the USB device.

  5. Play around with the live demo system and if you enjoy it, follow the on screen instructions to install Ubuntu either as a secondary option to MacOS X or Windows, or as the only option, whichever you prefer.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS brings big changes to the Linux desktop

The Ubuntu desktop has seen very little change since Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was released two years ago. That’s about to change with today’s launch of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS—code-named “Xenial Xerus”—which brings big changes and welcome polish to the classic Unity 7 desktop.

Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS launches today with the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment.

According to the announcement, release highlights include new community wallpapers, and the replacement of the Ubuntu Software Centre app with the GNOME Software graphical package manager.

A new project leader has been elected, Set Hallström, which took over the project on April 21, 2016, the day of the official release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

“Mythbuntu 16.04 has been released. This is a point release on our 14.04 LTS release. If you are already on 14.04, you can get these same updates via the normal update process. This is our third LTS release and will be supported until shortly after the 18.04 release.,” reads the announcement.

“After a year and a half of intense work by the LXD team, LXD 2.0 has been released today! LXD 2.0 is our first production-ready release and also a Long Term Support release, meaning that we will be supporting it with frequent bugfix releases until the 1st of June 2021,” said Stéphane Graber, technical lead for LXD, Canonical.

Is This Really The Ubuntu 16.10 Codename? (Answer: It Is)

“Y is for …Yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yak. Naturally.”

Sears RUNS LINUX

Hi Chris,

I spotted linux in the wild today at Sears. While the register was booting up it looked like the ubuntu boot screen with the 4 loading dots, but it was customized to show Sears instead of ubuntu. When the boot process had finished, a gtk dialog box popped up and I was able to snap a picture before it brought up the POS interface.

I also saw they were running desktop linux in the optical department. I only got a glimpse of it, but it looked like it might have been a really old customized version of kde.

The 4.5 kernel has been released

Linus has released the 4.5 kernel.
“So this is later on a Sunday than my usual schedule, because I just
couldn’t make up my mind whether I should do another rc8 or not, and
kept just waffling about it. In the end, I obviously decided not to,
but it could have gone either way.”
Some of the headline features from the development cycle are
dm-verity forward error
correction
,
optional mandatory locking,
the new copy_file_range() system
call
,
the SOCK_DESTROY operation,
another set of persistent-memory
improvements
,
extended address-space layout randomization
on 32-bit systems,
the MADV_FREE option for
madvise(),
the UBSAN checker tool,
some extensions to
epoll_wait()
,
project quotas for the ext4 filesystem,
and more.

Linux 4.6 Staging Has 1600+ Patches, ~400 Patches From Outreachy

So it looks like almost a quarter of the patches are from Outreachy, the group providing paid internships for women and other “underrepresented groups in tech” to work on the Linux kernel and related open-source projects.

XDG-App Is Becoming More Feature Complete

With today’s xdg-app 0.5 release, Alex considers this GNOME sandboxing tech to be feature complete for making it possible for third-parties to create and distribute applications that work across distributions. With this sandboxing, these packaged applications have minimal access to the host as needed for functionality.

Nmap 7.10 Security Scanner Adds Hundreds of OS/Version Fingerprints, New Scripts

“I’m pleased to announce the release of Nmap 7.10 with many great improvements,” says Fyodor in today’s announcement. “It’s got 12 new NSE scripts, hundreds of new OS/version fingerprints, and dozens if smaller improvements and bug fixes. And that’s not even counting the changes in Nmap 7.01, which we released in December 2015.”

SouthEast LinuxFest | Linux and in the GNU/South

The SouthEast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Open Source Software. It is part educational conference and part social gathering. Like Linux itself, it is shared with attendees of all skill levels to communicate tips and ideas, and to benefit all who use Linux and Open Source Software. SELF is the place to learn, to make new friends, to network with new business partners, and most importantly, to have fun!

This talk will introduce you to the concepts behind botnets, and also show a live demonstration of a botnet on a sandboxed network.

We’ll start off by discussing the implications of running a botnet and the horrifying effect of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. I’ll demonstrate how bots behave on infected hosts, and give attendees a look at a command and control (C&C) system, which ultimately gives the bots their orders.

At the end of the discussion attendees will be encouraged to share their horror stories of botnet attacks on networks and systems that they’ve administered.

There are a lot of resources available online for those who’d like to research botnets. I’ll share some of these with attendees, but please realize that this talk is for research purposes only.

Ubuntu’s Unity 8 and Mir Get Another Massive, Exciting New Update

After announcing last week that both the next-generation Unity 8 user interface and Mir display server of the Ubuntu Linux operating system received a massive update with numerous new features, Kevin Gunn dropped an email on June 12 informing us about an exciting new update for said technologies.

HP kills The Machine, repurposes design around conventional technologies

Last year, HP announced it was building The Machine — a computer meant to leap as far above conventional modern systems as a high-end Xeon workstation is above an IBM mainframe from the 1960s. The entire system was designed to work with special-purpose cores and to use memristors as a universal memory architecture. The entire system would be tied together through extensive use of silicon photonics. It was bold, ambitious, and cutting-edge. And now, it’s pretty much dead.

Instant Messaging in Fedora Workstation 2 | Brno’s hat

Telegram – I was really surprised by the popularity of Telegram. I personally don’t know anyone who uses it, but it looks like it could be the new #1 IM service for open source enthusiasts as Jabber was in the last decade. It’s the only (at least a bit popular) modern IM service that is trying to be open and focused on privacy. It has a Linux desktop app written in Qt. You can find it in Copr although it’s not packaged very well and the app is missing an icon. I’m not sure how easy it would be for the package to make it into the official repositories. The website says they’re using slightly modified Qt which could make it difficult. There is also a plugin for Pidgin which doesn’t support advanced features, but works well for simple chat communication (again available in Copr). If we pick Pidgin as the default browser again, we should have this plugin pre-installed since Telegram seems to be becoming more and more popular.

— FEEDBACK —

Windows 10 Includes a Linux-Style Package Manager Named “OneGet”

(I’m batching up my answers, I’m post-limited because I don’t post on Reddit much at all)

FAQs:

OneGet is open source — https://github.com/oneget/oneget[1]

  • we post bleeding edge/experimental builds often and the latest is always https://oneget.org/oneget.zip[2] (this contains the chocolatey provider again!)
  • Following @PSOneGet on twitter will keep you in the loop when new builds arrive.
  • We also actively take community input and design ideas; anyone can participate during our online weekly meetings (Friday mornings at 10AM PDT) — https://oneget.org/weekly/meeting.html[3]

@ANUSBLASTER_MKII — Package Provider can provider their own default repositories, but you have a point, feed discovery is an important concept. I have a few ideas about it, I think we’ll have to talk about that in the weekly meeting this week.

@blackout24 — I hear ya. I do make cmdline stuff all the time, but the PowerShell way of doing things strongly encourages use down a particular set of patterns. I’d tend to go a bit simpler too, but once you’ve learned the “PowerShell” patterns, everything that follows those is easy to use.

As well, OneGet will be exposing the APIs to talk to the package providers, so it’s entirely possible to build standalone cmdline tools that just use the APIs and make things easy.

CSB: I had a rather senior director at MS ask me if we couldn’t just make an exe called RPM (and/or apt-get) that had the same syntax as the linux tools so that those who were well versed in one could just use OneGet that way. I told him sure, but we’re scrambling for time, so I don’t know when we’d get to it 🙂

@Tireseas – what would you like it to do differently for interactive use? I’m going to great lengths to make the tab-completion as functional as I can (way more than PowerShell normally would let me). Additionally, the APIs will let someone make a GUI around it and bypass the whole powershell interface.

The project was supposed to be under wraps for at least a few more weeks, but Thursday, news started to leak out when a Mozilla evangelist tweeted a photo of a prototype of the device.

AMD Planning Open Source GameWorks Competitor, Mantle for Linux

(51:45) _When asked about AMD input on SteamOS and its commitment to the gamers that see that as the future, Huddy mentioned that AMD was considering, but not promising, bringing the Mantle API to Linux. If the opportunity exists, says Huddy, to give the gamer a better experience on that platform with the help of Mantle, and developers ask for the support for AMD, then AMD will at the very least \”listen to that.\” It would incredibly interesting to see a competitor API in the landscape of Linux where OpenGL is essentially the only game in town.

crouton is a set of scripts that bundle up into an easy-to-use, Chromium OS-centric chroot generator. Currently Ubuntu and Debian are supported (using debootstrap behind the scenes), but \”Chromium OS Debian, Ubuntu, and Probably Other Distros Eventually Chroot Environment\” doesn\’t acronymize as well (crodupodece is admittedly pretty fun to say, though).

Your needs change from one moment to the next. That\’s why Firefox OS does the same. It gives you the power to live every moment to its fullest and participate in a better world.

“You guys weren’t kidding, they really do pay attention to all the small details. There’s even a removable, cleanable filter on the bottom at the vent intake! Now that’s class! It says we really care about what we sell and go the extra mile to make sure it lasts as long as possible. And from the moment of my order, until and after it shipped, Emma was right there answering any questions I had and letting me know what the status was. A very personal touch you just don’t find anymore. You can bank on any future computer I purchase will have the System76 logo on it.”
