We go behind the scenes & give you details on our new Linux rig builds, using OBS to stream to multiple services, the hard lessons we learned & our Linux powered production pipeline. After our year long skunkworks project this episode is living proof of how for media production under Linux has come.

Plus now we can all say ZFS is officially on Linux, Intel’s plans to make up for their Linux Skylake screw up, Ubuntu gets some snaps, Fedora “attempts” H.264 support, some games worth your time & more!

ESA astronaut Tim Peake will take part in an experiment dubbed ‘SUPVIS-M’ (Supervisory Control of Mars Yard Rover) in which he will operate, from the International Space Station (ISS), a UK-built rover – Bridget – located in the Airbus Mars Yard in Stevenage, UK.

Getting started with Linux:

  1. Obtain the Ubuntu Install image from ubuntu.com

  2. Write the Ubuntu installation image to a USB flash media device. On PC use Etcher or Rufus & on a mac, use Etcher. Be careful to make sure the flash drive is chosen in this step.

  3. Once that is finished, eject the drive and insert the drive into your PC/Mac

  4. When booting the PC/Mac press F2 (or your computer’s hotkey to access the boot menu), or if you’re running a newer version of Windows such as 8 or 10 boot into Windows, press start, go to advanced start options, choose UEFI Settings, Disable secureboot. Boot back into Windows repeat the steps to get back into UEFI and choose to boot off of the USB device.

  5. Play around with the live demo system and if you enjoy it, follow the on screen instructions to install Ubuntu either as a secondary option to MacOS X or Windows, or as the only option, whichever you prefer.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS brings big changes to the Linux desktop

The Ubuntu desktop has seen very little change since Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was released two years ago. That’s about to change with today’s launch of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS—code-named “Xenial Xerus”—which brings big changes and welcome polish to the classic Unity 7 desktop.

Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS launches today with the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment.

According to the announcement, release highlights include new community wallpapers, and the replacement of the Ubuntu Software Centre app with the GNOME Software graphical package manager.

A new project leader has been elected, Set Hallström, which took over the project on April 21, 2016, the day of the official release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

“Mythbuntu 16.04 has been released. This is a point release on our 14.04 LTS release. If you are already on 14.04, you can get these same updates via the normal update process. This is our third LTS release and will be supported until shortly after the 18.04 release.,” reads the announcement.

“After a year and a half of intense work by the LXD team, LXD 2.0 has been released today! LXD 2.0 is our first production-ready release and also a Long Term Support release, meaning that we will be supporting it with frequent bugfix releases until the 1st of June 2021,” said Stéphane Graber, technical lead for LXD, Canonical.

Is This Really The Ubuntu 16.10 Codename? (Answer: It Is)

“Y is for …Yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yak. Naturally.”

New encryption ransomware targets Linux systems

Many of the systems that have been affected by the malware were infected when attackers exploited a vulnerability in the Magento CMS. A critical vulnerability patch for Magneto, which is used to power a number of e-commerce sites, was published on October 31. Doctor Web researchers currently place the number of victims in the “at least tens” range, but attacks on other vulnerable content management systems could increase the number of victims dramatically.

In order to run, the malware has to be executed with administrator-level privileges. Using 128-bit AES crypto, the malware encrypts the contents of all users’ home directories and any files associated with websites running on the systems. It then goes through the whole directory structure of mounted volumes, encrypting a variety of file types. In each directory it encrypts, it drops a text file called README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt. This demands payment and provides a link to a Tor “hidden service” site via a Tor gateway.

Bitdefender researchers discovered that when it generates the AES keys, the malicious program uses a weak source of random data — the time and date at the moment of encryption.

This time stamp is easy to determine by looking at when the AES key files were created on disk. Therefore, researchers are able to reverse the process and recover the AES keys without needing to decrypt them, making the RSA public and private keys pointless.

The tool created and released by Bitdefender is a script written in Python that determines the initialization vectors and AES encryption keys by analyzing the files encrypted by the ransomware program. It then decrypts the files and fixes their permissions on the system.

“If you can boot your compromised operating system, download the script and run it under the root user,” the Bitdefender researchers said in a blog post that also contains detailed instructions on how to use the tool.

An abrupt End to Debian Live

Therefore, after having founded Debian Live back in 2006 and having by now almost 10 years continuously worked on it, without further ado:

Debian Live is dead, hijacked by the debian-cd and the debian-installer Teams

The live.debian.net server will be shut down end of month, the Git repositories are read-only as of now and mirrored to GitHub for archival

No, the story is more like this:

  • Debian live is created, widely used including by debian, but perhaps in some way not “officially” Debian (though this is unclear).
  • Debian CD team has some outstanding bugs with debian-live, which some members (but apparently not the lead dev) are aware of (or at least, not aware that they are major problems for debian-cd).
  • Someone creates a “successor” project called debian-live-ng that fixes these bugs, rather than fixing them in debian-live.
  • Debian CD is going to use this new project.
  • Lead developer of debian-live finds out about this scenario only when someone tries to push a package with the name live-build-ng (which conflicts with the live-* namespace used by debian-live), only to encounter a Debian CD team already dead-set on replacing and deprecating his project and overloading the package namespace with their new project without further discussion.

Or, in short, diplomacy, courtesy, and basic communication were neglected, and the inevitable happened.

SouthEast LinuxFest | Linux and in the GNU/South

The SouthEast LinuxFest is a community event for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and Open Source Software. It is part educational conference and part social gathering. Like Linux itself, it is shared with attendees of all skill levels to communicate tips and ideas, and to benefit all who use Linux and Open Source Software. SELF is the place to learn, to make new friends, to network with new business partners, and most importantly, to have fun!

This talk will introduce you to the concepts behind botnets, and also show a live demonstration of a botnet on a sandboxed network.

We’ll start off by discussing the implications of running a botnet and the horrifying effect of distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. I’ll demonstrate how bots behave on infected hosts, and give attendees a look at a command and control (C&C) system, which ultimately gives the bots their orders.

At the end of the discussion attendees will be encouraged to share their horror stories of botnet attacks on networks and systems that they’ve administered.

There are a lot of resources available online for those who’d like to research botnets. I’ll share some of these with attendees, but please realize that this talk is for research purposes only.

Ubuntu’s Unity 8 and Mir Get Another Massive, Exciting New Update

After announcing last week that both the next-generation Unity 8 user interface and Mir display server of the Ubuntu Linux operating system received a massive update with numerous new features, Kevin Gunn dropped an email on June 12 informing us about an exciting new update for said technologies.

HP kills The Machine, repurposes design around conventional technologies

Last year, HP announced it was building The Machine — a computer meant to leap as far above conventional modern systems as a high-end Xeon workstation is above an IBM mainframe from the 1960s. The entire system was designed to work with special-purpose cores and to use memristors as a universal memory architecture. The entire system would be tied together through extensive use of silicon photonics. It was bold, ambitious, and cutting-edge. And now, it’s pretty much dead.

OBS MultiPlatform is a complete rewrite of the original OBS from the ground up, with the main goals of course being multiplatform support, a more thorough feature set, and a much more powerful API. A very early and simple release is currently available for Mac.

OBS MultiPlatform will eventually support many of the advanced requested features not present in the original OBS, such as multiple stream outputs and scene previewing. It does not have these features in this release.

Linux on a USB Stick for Students

Lernstick is a mobile and secure learning and working environment for school and home that is usually installed on removable media (USB sticks, USB hard disks, SD cards, etc.) so that (almost*) any computer can be booted from these storage media. A hard drive with an installed operation system is no longer necessary. (But optionally, the system can also be installed on internal hard drives.)

GNU dmd

GNU dmd is a “Daemon managing Daemons” (or “Daemons-managing Daemon”?), i.e. a service manager that provides a replacement for the service-managing capabilities of SysV-init (or any other init) with a both powerful and beautiful dependency-based system with a convenient interface. It is intended for use on GNU/Hurd, but it is supposed to work on every POSIX-like system where Guile is available. In particular, it has been tested on GNU/Linux

It’s Been Three Years Since The Big Steam Linux Reveal

Fast forward three years, there’s now more than 1,100 games on Steam for Linux!

Going out this year there’s Source 2 to look forward to seeing, Steam Machines and the Steam Controller expected for release before year end, and SteamOS should be stabilized. There’s also going to be the release of the open-source Intel Vulkan driver financed by Valve for as soon as the Khronos Group releases the first official Vulkan specification.

Scientists Use Ubuntu to Interpret Hubble Telescope Data

The Hubble space telescope is now in the news because it celebrates 25 years since its launch and that is an amazing achievement, especially if we keep in mind that it was launched with a flaw that could have turned it into space junk.

Endless Computers by Endless Team

A few years ago, on a trip to India, we had an epiphany: If we ran a full desktop operating system on the inexpensive processors that power smartphones, and plugged them into the TVs people already own, we could make a computer that is affordable to more people.

Windows + Android?

Microsoft will most likely announce this week that it will enable customers to run Android apps on their Windows 10 phones, tablets and PCs. The timing ostensibly makes sense, as the software giant’s Build conference, held this week in San Francisco, targets developers. But I wonder what message this change will send to developers and users, especially at a time when the company is also pushing a universal app strategy centered on Windows.

Spotify, RunKeeper, and other Android apps get their own Google Now cards

Spotify can recommend playlists based on your listening history; the same is true for TuneIn Radio and YouTube. Zipcar will remind users when their car reservation is set to expire and provide quick links for navigating to the drop-off location or extending the rental. Fitness apps from RunKeeper, Jawbone, and Adidas can now remind you of your daily goals and encourage you to work toward them. You can keep up with breaking news by enabling cards from ABC News, Circa, or Feedly. And there’s even an OpenTable Google Now card that will let you pay your dinner bill with a tap.

Announcing the next Ubuntu Online Summit

While the focus on development in the last few cycles has been on shaping up and implementing the phone, this doesn’t mean other key parts of the project have been left out. The phone has helped create the platform and tools that will ultimately bring all these projects together, into a converged code base and user experience. From desktop to phone, to the cloud, to things, and back to the desktop.

In the live run up to Obama’s sales pitch to the nation to go back into Iraq, we analysis the recent developments of ISIS, and dispel common memes being pushed out by the media. Then cover Obama’s speech in real time with our commentary.

Plus new leaks from the CIA Torture report suggest the scope of waterboarding and other tactics by the CIA were much more brutal than the public has been lead to believe.

Then we end on a surprising high note, and in-depth discussion.

CIA Torture Report

CIA ‘tortured al-Qaeda suspects close to the point of death by drowning them in water-filled baths’ – Telegraph

As the US Senate prepares to release a report documenting US
torture programme after 9/11, Telegraph reveals new details about the scope
of CIA excesses

“They weren’t just pouring water over their heads or over a cloth,” said the source who has first-hand knowledge of the period. “They were holding them under water until the point of death, with a doctor present to make sure they did not go too far. This was real torture.”

The account of extreme CIA interrogation comes as the US Senate prepares to publish a declassified version of its so-called Torture Report – a 3,600-page report document based on a review of several million classified CIA documents.

Publication of the report is currently being held up by a dispute over how much of the 480-page public summary should remain classified, but it is expected to be published within weeks.

Snowden

The Swiss attorney general has said that whistleblower Edward Snowden can reside there if he responds to state requests for testimony against the US National Security Agency (NSA).

A document provided to the Swiss Sunday newspaper Sonntagszeitung is titled, “What are the rules would apply to consider when Edward Snowden would [be] brought to Switzerland and then the United States would make a request for extradition“, and it relates that the rules would allow the movement and repel the requests.

Speaking to the newspaper, Snowden’s Swiss lawyer Marcel Bosonnet revealed that he is pleased with the results of the study, commenting that, “The legal requirements for safety are met.”

ISIS

Seven in 10 Americans believe ISIS has the resources to launch an attack against the United States, just days before President Barack Obama plans to address the nation on the subject.

The poll released Monday shows that Americans favor:

— Additional airstrikes against ISIS (76% favor, 23% oppose)

— Military aid to forces fighting ISIS (62% favor, 37% oppose)

— Providing humanitarian aid to people fleeing ISIS (83% favor, 16% oppose)

U.S. targets ISIS fighters near Iraq’s second-largest dam

But a majority of Americans, 61%-38%, oppose placing U.S. soldiers on the ground in Iraq and Syria to combat the terrorist group.

Even as Americans support military action against ISIS, they still want Obama to seek authority from Congress before taking any action. More than 7 in 10 Americans think Obama should ask Congress for the ability to strike ISIS militarily. And 8 in 10 Americans support Congress approving military force against ISIS.

High Note:

Washington’s indoor pot grows could be big power suck – Local – MyNorthwest.com

“You’re installing 1,000 watt lights over about every two plants and running those 16 to 18 hours a day to grow the product over a 10, 12, 14 week cycle. It’s a pretty significant consumption of electricity.”

The council studied a number of growers across the state earlier this summer after they were granted licenses by the Washington State Liquor Control Board. It determined demand for electricity could grow between 60 and 160 average megawatts over the next few years.

“That’s significant,” Eckman says. “That’s about half of the size of a new combustion turbine gas generating plant.”

Since Washington voters in 2012 approved an initiative to legalize recreational pot use by adults, the state Liquor Control Board has so far issued more than 200 licenses to marijuana growers out of about 2,500 who have applied.

Colorado is now selling more recreational pot than medical pot, a turning point for the newly legal industry.

Tax records released by the state Department of Revenue on Wednesday showed that the state sold $29.7 million worth of recreational marijuana in July, the most recent data available. That was slightly higher than the $28.9 million worth of medical marijuana sold in the same month.

Colorado has many more medical pot shops than recreational pot shops, which are open to all 21 and over. Colorado has some 500 medical shops, fewer than 200 open to all adults.

Since January, Colorado has reaped more than $37 million in taxes from marijuana. That figure includes taxes, licenses and fees from both medical and recreational pot.

I also want to make it clear none of these small form-factor dev boards/devices based on ARM have no Gigabit bandwidth capability. Not even on media boxes sold directly from China.

If you want real Gigabit bandwidth or 10Gbps bandwidth you can look elsewhere because you won\’t find it in ARM except in higher-end stuff like Calxeda or AMD.

Matt’s Howto: WebcamStudio

For months now, I’ve received requests to do a how-to on WebcamStudio. I’ve held off on this, since the developer has stated outright that the software is about to go under some heavy changes. Still, I am the co-pilot on the project so to speak, so I thought I’d throw everyone a bone and show them how to run WebcamStudio on Ustream.

You can download WebcamStudio from this link. https://www.ws4gl.org/download/installing-on-ubuntu
This segment demonstrates how you can run multiple webcams, plus how you can even add in some transitions as well on the Wild Dog PC from System76.com during a live broadcast.

Flash troubles with Ustream? If you find that Flash is giving you the allow/deny box and you cannot click into it, try this below.

1- Visit this url
https://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html

2- Next, look for a reference to the site giving you trouble. In my case, it was static-cdn1.ustream.tv

3- Highlight the static-cdn1.ustream.tv entry with your mouse, then choose always allow.

4- Close the browser, then re-open it and visit Ustream once again, then try to broadcast again. Both your audio and video will work.

5- Now close the browser again, open up webcam studio, then visit Ustream to broadcast once again. Once there, choose the video source pull down for WebcamStudio. Audio source, should be your webcam or USB headset.
