deb-simple: Read only copy of https://git.esheavyindustries.com/esell/deb-simple

This project came from a need I had to be able to serve up already created deb packages without a lot of fuss. Most of the existing solutions
I found were either geared at mirroring existing “official” repos or for providing your packages to the public. My need was just something that

I could use internally to install already built deb packages via apt-get. I didn’t care about change files, signed packages, etc. Since this was
to be used in a CI pipeline it had to support remote uploads and be able to update the package list after each upload.

Killing Home Internet Is the Most Productive Thing I’ve Ever Done

Earlier this year I made the conscious decision to remove all Internet service from my home. It ended up being the best productivity decision I’ve ever made.

Now when I’m on the Internet, it has a purpose—it is a tool I use to enhance my life. Sure, sometimes I log on to watch some funny videos or laugh at memes, but I go to the Internet with the intention of doing these things.

Snap support lands in Fedora 24, 25 & 26

As part as our mission to get snaps running everywhere, we are pleased to announce that support for snaps has now officially landed in Fedora, starting with Fedora 24 and up.

Why use snaps?

Among other things, snaps make packaging, distribution and updates really easy for developers and automated for users. Which means you will get the latest version of your installed apps directly from upstream, on release day, or even daily if upstream has integrated snap publication into their CI process.

The Companies That Support Linux and Open Source: Pinterest | Linux.com

Pinterest — “the world’s catalog of ideas” — is built on open source, according to Jon Parise, technical architecture lead and open source program lead at the company. In this interview, Parise explains how adopting open source has changed the company and helped the company’s engineers design software that is more modular, reusable, and well-documented from the outset.

Pinterest is built on open source. From our first lines of Django code over six years ago to the release of Rocksplicator, our latest open source project, we’ve directly benefited from open source projects and the supportive communities surrounding them. In turn, we’ve made significant contributions to the open source technologies we use and have pushed the limits of technologies like HBase. Internally, open source is part of a product cycle. We frequently open source the technologies we build as both a way to give back to communities and because it’s the right thing to do.

Why Slack is inappropriate for open source communications

In the context of an open source project, Slack, HipChat, Gitter, etc, provide a forum for advocacy, gossip, informal discussion, and support. My complaints start when Slack and friends are promoted as the recommended way to communicate with the project.

  • Slack, et al, are paid services with closed memberships.

  • Slack, et al, are based on synchronous communication, which discriminate against those who do not or can not take part of the conversation in real time.

Instead of closed, synchronous, systems I recommend open source projects stick to asynchronous communication tools that leave a publicly linkable, searchable, url. The tools that fit this requirement best are; mailing list, issue trackers, and forums.

Ubuntu Unity is dead: Desktop will switch back to GNOME next year

Six years after making Unity the default user interface on Ubuntu desktops, Canonical is giving up on the project and will switch the default Ubuntu desktop back to GNOME next year. Canonical is also ending development of Ubuntu software for phones and tablets, spelling doom for the goal of creating a converged experience with phones acting as desktops when docked with the right equipment.

“Work on the phone and tablet is also ending, the whole convergence story, really,” Hall said. “The desktop will continue, but like it was in the pre-Unity days where we took what upstream [developers] designed and developed.”

By switching to GNOME, Canonical is also giving up on Mir and moving to the Wayland display server, another contender for replacing the X window system. Given the separate development paths of Mir and Wayland, “we have no real choice but to use Wayland when Ubuntu switches to GNOME by default,” Hall told Ars. “Using Mir simply isn’t an option we have.”

Gravitational Teleport is a modern SSH server for remotely accessing clusters of Linux servers via SSH or HTTPS. It is intended to be used instead of sshd. Teleport enables teams to easily adopt the best SSH practices like:

  • No need to distribute keys: Teleport uses certificate-based access with automatic expiration time.
  • Enforcement of 2nd factor authentication.
  • Cluster introspection: every Teleport node becomes a part of a cluster and is visible on the Web UI.
  • Record and replay SSH sessions for knowledge sharing and auditing purposes.
  • Collaboratively troubleshoot issues through session sharing.
  • Connect to clusters located behind firewalls without direct Internet access via SSH bastions.
  • Ability to integrate SSH credentials with your organization identities via OAuth (Google Apps, Github).

Teleport is built on top of the high-quality Golang SSH implementation and it is fully compatible with OpenSSH.

Installing Arch Linux on a MacBook (Air/Pro) or an iMac is quite similar to installing it on any other computer. However, due to the specific hardware configuration of a Mac, there are a few deviations and special considerations which warrant a separate guide

This wiki page should help you in getting your MacBook Pro from Late 2013 or Mid 2014 to work with Arch Linux.

Zim is a graphical text editor used to maintain a collection of wiki pages. Each page can contain links to other pages, simple formatting and images. Pages are stored in a folder structure, like in an outliner, and can have attachments. Creating a new page is as easy as linking to a nonexistent page. All data is stored in plain text files with wiki formatting. Various plugins provide additional functionality, like a task list manager, an equation editor, a tray icon, and support for version control.

Surround 360 is now open source

Today we officially open-sourced the specs for Surround 360, our high-quality 3D-360 hardware and software video capture system. The open source project includes the hardware camera design and software stitching code that makes end-to-end 3D-360 video capture possible in one system — from shooting to video processing.

We believe making the camera design and stitching code freely available on GitHub will accelerate the growth of the 3D-360 ecosystem — developers will be able to leverage the code, and content creators can use the camera in their productions. Anyone will be able to contribute to, build on top of, improve, or distribute the camera based on these specs.

The fall of Open Source

The moment that Open Source becomes primarily about “my time” is the moment that Open Source is no longer a movement. It is no longer an ideology. It is no longer about fairness, freedom, equality, rights, or the greater good.

Linux’s AV Stack Adding Awesome Features

Beamforming as a concept is used in various aspects of signal processing including radio waves, but I’m going to be talking about it only as applied to audio. The basic idea is that if you have a number of microphones (a mic array) in some known arrangement, it is possible to “point” or steer the array in a particular direction, so sounds coming from that direction are made louder, while sounds from other directions are rendered softer (attenuated).

Practically speaking, it should be easy to see the value of this on a laptop, for example, where you might want to focus a mic array to point in front of the laptop, where the user probably is, and suppress sounds that might be coming from other locations. You can see an example of this in the webcam below. Notice the grilles on either side of the camera — there is a microphone behind each of these.

Howto: Setup .NET Core on Ubuntu

.NET Core 1.0 is here and it’s a great, great opportunity to start playing with it not only on Windows platform but also on Linux.

Running i3 Window Manager on Bash For Windows

Imagine my surprise when I installed Bash for Windows on this build and pretty much everything worked. I cloned my dotfiles and ran the post-install scripts that install i3 window manager, neovim, zsh, Go, and all the requisite development tools that I’m used to. Nothing failed.

…Returning to bash, I typed i3 again. Gloriously, the famililar i3 session appeared. I’m able to install and run Linux GUI applications like Firefox. I have terminator running as my terminal emulator. I’m running zsh as my shell. Neovim just works, as does Go. All of them think they’re running on a Linux computer, because for all intents and purposes they are. It just happens to have a Windows NT kernel at its core.

Strange, strange times we live in. 20 years ago Microsoft called Linux a cancer and did everything they could to make it die. Today they’re embracing Linux – and by extension me – and I have to say I’m really impressed with the outcome.
