Alien: Isolation has officially been released for Linux, and continues our trend of great AAA games. I would recommend playing this from behind a pillow, with emergency pants nearby.

Feedback:

This release, we focused on cleanup, polishing and quality-of-life
improvements, with over 400 issues fixed and dozens of new
translations. We have also gained two new frameworks: Solid, which
replaces liblxqt-mount and some custom power management code and
libkscreen, which replaces system xrandr calls and is wayland
forward-compatible.

The EPA says Volkswagen cheated on emissions testing again – YouTube

What route does someone who cares about this kinda stuff take. Do we just avoid all this stuff until its sorted out? I mean seriously, why not

The Volkswagen diesel crisis is an ongoing reminder of the dilemma that proprietary auto software and hardware is presenting for automakers and consumers. In September, VW disclosed that alleged “defeat devices” were installed in 2009-15 VW and Audi diesel cars. How was VW able to get away with this for so long? Because the automaker’s onboard software is protected against outside inspection.

But as shocking as Volkswagen’s fraud may be, it only heralds more of its kind. It’s time to address one of the most urgent if overlooked tech transparency issues—secret code in the criminal justice system. Today, closed, proprietary software can put you in prison or even on death row. And in most U.S. jurisdictions you still wouldn’t have the right to inspect it. In short, prosecutors have a Volkswagen problem.

Mr. Moglen, a lawyer, technologist and historian who founded the Software Freedom Law Center, has argued for decades that software ought to be transparent. That would best serve the public interest, he said in his 2010 speech.

“Software is in everything,” he said, citing airplanes, medical devices and cars, much of it proprietary and thus invisible. “We shouldn’t use it for purposes that could conceivably cause harm, like running personal computers, let alone should we use it for things like anti-lock brakes or throttle control in automobiles.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Moglen recalled the elevator in his hotel.

“Intelligent public policy, as we all have learned since the early 20th century, is to require elevators to be inspectable, and to require manufacturers of elevators to build them so they can be inspected,” he said. “If Volkswagen knew that every customer who buys a vehicle would have a right to read the source code of all the software in the vehicle, they would never even consider the cheat, because the certainty of getting caught would terrify them.”

But on Tuesday, the Library of Congress issued exemptions to DMCA that pleased many auto enthusiasts. In a ruling that also freed those who wish to modify tablets and smart TVs, the LOC said, more or less, monkey away.

What makes the perfect home server?

Round Table:

Anti-virus pioneer Alan Solomon thinks anti-virus is dead. He uses Linux instead

“I stopped using an antivirus a long time ago, because I couldn\’t see how it could work in a world where you would need daily updates, which means that each update is tested for … how long? Not very long, obviously.

Ubuntu Cluster Orange Box

The Orange Box is an innovative, custom designed micro cluster chassis, envisioned by Canonical, and contract manufactured by TranquilPC Limited. The chassis includes a small cluster of Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) boards, and is particularly well suited for portable demonstration and local prototyping of cloud workloads. The Orange Box, manufactured in the UK to exacting standards is available to order and ships internationally (free of charge).

Each Orange Box chassis contains:

  • 10x Intel NUCs
  • Specifically, the Ivy Bridge D53427RKE model

Each Intel NUC contains

  • i5-3427U CPU
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • 16GB of DDR3 RAM
  • 120GB SSD root disk
  • Intel Gigabit ethernet
  • D-Link DGS-1100-16 managed gigabit switch with 802.1q VLAN support

All 10 nodes are internally connected to this gigabit switch

In aggregate, this micro cluster effectively fields 40 cores, 160GB of RAM, 1.2TB of solid state storage, and is connected over an internal gigabit network fabric. A single fan quietly cools the power supply, while all of the nodes are passively cooled by aluminum heat sinks spanning each side of the chassis.

The first node, node0, additionally contains:

  • An Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 WiFi adapter
  • A 2TB HDD (spinning)
  • USB and HDMI ports are wired and accessible from the rear of the box
  • Access to the USB/HDMI of nodes1-9 is accessible from the underside of the unit

  • Six GBE LAN ports (all connected to the internal switch) are exposed to the rear panel, for external access, or even clustering of multiple Orange Boxes together.

Ubuntu 12.10 Review:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

  • I still find myself finding a lot of time tweaking my Ubuntu 12.10 install. However I am now tweaking different things. Less theme stuff, and more changing defaults and adding my preferred apps over Ubuntu’s default choices (Chrome, Geary, Dropbox, Pidgin, etc). None of this is hard to do, in fact Ubuntu feels almost as well supported as Windows these days from the software vendors I follow.

  • As Ubuntu gets more and more polished, I would love to see a day when only simple user preferences need to be tweaked.

  • Quantal includes the 3.5.0–15.23 Ubuntu Linux kernel which was based on the v3.5.4 upstream Linux kernel.

  • Unity Previews

  • Revamped Update Manager

  • Online account and Web service desktop integration.

  • Unity Previews

  • Unity Shopping Lens
    • This needs to be user selectable. Maybe I’d rather have my “More suggestions” search be Google, or twitter. They should allow the user to select which “More suggestions” search is used in the home lens.
  • Nautilus 3.4.2 file manager. This is not the newest version of Nautilus.

  • Amazon inclusion in Unity.

  • Unity 2D Removed from Ubuntu 12.10

Trisquel Review:

System76

Brought to you by: System76

  • Public presentation of Trisquel GNU/Linux!

  • The 5.5 STS edition, codename Brigantia, was released on April 16, 2012.

  • Brigantia is an STS (short term support) version, which will be supported for one year after release.

Software versions and distro editions:

This release is based on Ubuntu 11.10 and as always it contains only free software, including:

Chris:

A great distro, that is pleasant to use, and easy on the eyes with smart choices made. However, it does feel a bit heavy with its message if a few spots (might be off putting to some switchers) and with it’s probable GNU/Power user target demographic, perhaps being based on Arch might draw more interest.

Matt:

As you can see in the video I recorded during my testing, the hardware support is fantastic and mirrors Ubuntu proper. That said, Gnash is painful to use and the firmware restrictions did affect the abilities of some wireless devices. This distro is otherwise, no different that Ubuntu, from which it is based on. As for seeking help in their forums, be prepared for attack of the RMS clones when asking ANYTHING to do with proprietary options such as firmware, etc. . If I was a new user, I’d be looking elsewhere. For myself, I am keeping it on an old mini-tower running LXDE.
