Ubuntu Devs Uncertain about Using Wayland by Default in 17.10

Ubuntu Desktop team lead Will Cooke remarks that: “my gut feeling is that wayland (sic) isn’t ready yet,” and Didier Roche says the distro will ‘default to xorg until we take a decision’.

Warning: Grsecurity: Potential contributory infringement and breach of contract risk for customers

It is inseparable from Linux and can not work without it. it would fail a fair-use test (obviously, ask offline if you don’t understand). Because of its strongly derivative nature of the kernel, it must be under the GPL version 2 license, or a license compatible with the GPL and with terms no more restrictive than the GPL. Earlier versions were distributed under GPL version 2.

Steam Client updates later on around 21:50 which will include a “major redesign of the Steam Client”, which they said they know is long overdue. The new Library and Game Launch Page sound like they will see the biggest changes, with much more content shown to the user.
Hopefully this will also include support for scaling, since the Steam Client is currently terrible for high resolution displays.

Benchmarking nftables

Basically, my idea was to find out how much certain firewall setups affect performance.

It clearly shows how performance suffers as the number of rules increases. Interestingly, the decrease in throughput is not linear with rule count, so the overhead introduced with adding rules becomes less and less significant the more rules there are already. In practical boundaries though, one can assume a linear regression. Also worth noting is that iptables performs slightly better.

What’s New in Fedora 26 Workstation – Fedora Magazine

  • Linux 4.11.8
  • GNOME 3.24
  • LibreOffice 5.3
  • Fedora Media Writer gains ARM support
  • Builder now features improved support for systems like Flatpak, CMake, Meson, and Rust.
  • Qt Adwaita theme contains many improvements and looks closer to its GTK counterpart than ever.
What is Fedora Boltron?

Boltron is an upcoming prototype of Fedora Modularity. A formal description is documented in Changes/Modular Server Preview on the Fedora wiki. This page tracks the progress of the release.

Changes/NoMoreAlpha – FedoraProject

By gating Rawhide builds from landing in the compose and gating the publication of composes on automated test results we will ensure Rawhide will always be at Alpha quality. This will make it more generally useful to people as a daily driver and development platform, and mean we no longer need to go through the process of building, testing and shipping Alpha releases.

Ubuntu Turns 10

Ubuntu with Unity 7

If we’re honest, a review of Ubuntu 14.10 could be summarized simply as:

“For those who love Ubuntu, 14.10 is more of what you love. And not much else, for better or worse.”

But Ubuntu 14.10 also offers an appealing playground to check out some of the latest desktop technologies.

  • Ubuntu 14.10 will be supported for 9 months for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Core, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin along with all other flavours. This 9 month window of time is too short for a long-term deployment, but just about right for the enthusiast.

  • Linux kernel 3.16

Kubuntu

Kubuntu is releasing two flavors: One with Plasma 4 for stability, and one with Plasma 5 to try the new hotness. Both can be grabbed from Kubuntu.org.

Updates to Plasma 5.1

Xubuntu

Xubuntu is an elegant and easy-to-use operating system. Xubuntu comes with Xfce, which is a stable, light and configurable desktop environment.

Ubuntu MATE

Ubuntu MATE is a stable, easy-to-use operating system with a configurable desktop environment. Ideal for those who want the most out of their desktops, laptops and netbooks and prefer a traditional desktop metaphor. With modest hardware requirements it is suitable for modern workstations and older hardware alike.

Ubuntu GNOME

Ubuntu GNOME is Ubuntu with a pure GNOME Shell experience as opposed to Unity.

Ubuntu GNOME includes GNOME 3.12, but can be upgraded to 3.14 using the following PPAs: ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 and ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging

Lubuntu

Lubuntu is the LXDE-based variant of Ubuntu for low resource usage and targeting older computers.

Lubuntu includes LXDE but LXQt is available for installation via the following PPA: ppa:lubuntu-dev/daily

Other flavors released this cycle:

Edubuntu: Education-targeted flavor using Unity as the desktop environment.
Ubuntu Studio: Xubuntu-based flavor using Xfce as the desktop environment targeting graphic artists, photographers, musicians, and audio/video production.
Ubuntu Kylin: Ubuntu Kylin is the official Chinese version of Ubuntu. It uses Unity as the desktop environment.

Linus Torvalds Regrets Alienating Developers with Strong Language

“One of the reasons we have this culture of strong language, that admittedly many people find off-putting, is that when it comes to technical people with strong opinions and with a strong drive to do something technically superior, you end up having these opinions show up as sometimes pretty strong language,” said Linus Torvalds.

KDE – Plasma 5.1 Brings Back Many Popular Features

October 15, 2014.
Today, KDE releases Plasma 5.1.0, the first release containing new features since the release of Plasma 5.0 this summer. Plasma 5.1 sports a wide variety of improvements.

Docker 1.3 Improves Container Security

Among the big additions is the ability to check images with the using of a digital signature. By having the digital signature, it provides users with an additional layer of confidence to know that an image has not been tampered with.

Docker container support coming to Microsoft’s next Windows Server release

Under the terms of the agreement announced today, the Docker Engine open source runtime for building, running and orchestrating containers will work with the next version of Windows Server. The Docker Engine for Windows Server will be developed as a Docker open source project, with Microsoft participating as an active community member. Docker Engine images for Windows Server will be available in the Docker Hub. The Docker Hub will also be integrated directly into Azure so that it is accessible through the Azure Management Portal and Azure Gallery. Microsoft also will be contributing to Docker’s open orchestration application programming interfaces (APIs).

Note: October 14 marks its North American release only. It goes live in Australasia on October 16. The European release follows on October 17.

VCs Pushing Young Entrepreneurs to Build Proprtary Products that Lock-In

To some extent, I think this goes back to the pernicious myth of the “sustainable competitive advantage.” This is a line you hear all too often from venture capitalists, and as I’ve said for over a decade, it’s misleading in the extreme.

Thanks to users’ input on the issue, ChromeOS developers’ decision to drop ext* filesystem support on the file manager is being reversed.

Thanks for all of your feedback on this bug. We’ve heard you loud and clear.

We plan to re-enable ext2/3/4 support in Files.app immediately. It will come back, just like it was before, and we’re working to get it into the next stable channel release.

rakudave gives us a TL;DR, translated:

The deputy mayors main complaint is that there’s no convenient way to access mails and appointments on mobile devices, apparently confusing LiMux (the desktop OS) with the current groupware migration to Kolab Enterprise[1] , which is still ongoing and targets all platforms (Windows/LiMux/Mobile), as opposed to the old system.

He then goes on to say that he doubts that the public sector can keep up to date and that the software is “years behind the latest version”, ignoring the fact that most of the other cities still rely on XP. The only valid part of this objections seem to be that LiMux is still based on Ubuntu 10.04 & KDE 3.5, however an update is scheduled for Q4 of this year (OpenOffice -> LibreOffice, Ubuntu LTS, KDE 4)

The Google Security Team discovered a buffer overflow vulnerability in

potentially to arbitrary code execution.

Red Hat: We want to be “undisputed leader” in the cloud

“The competition is fierce, and companies will have several choices for their cloud needs,” Whitehurst acknowledged. “But the prize is the chance to establish open source as the default choice of this next era, and to position Red Hat as the provider of choice for enterprises’ entire cloud infrastructure.”

To get there, Whitehurst says Red Hat will focus on three key offerings — its CloudForms management platform, its OpenShift PaaS, and OpenStack. However its Jboss middleware and storage solutions will also play a role, helping Red Hat to deliver as much infrastructure as it can.

Red Hat’s renewed cloud focus doesn’t mean it will pay any less attention to Linux. Its just that the greatest challenge lies in the data center itself.

Red Hat CEO announces a shift from client-server to cloud computing | ZDNet

They both have excellent reasons for seeing it this way. With the exception of Microsoft Azure, all other cloud platforms rely on Linux and open source software. Amazon’s cloud services, for example, run on top of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

So neither Linux leader is walking too far away from Linux. Shuttleworth, for example, is quite proud that Ubuntu is the leading Linux OS on OpenStack. Whitehurst was quick to note that “Red Hat Enterprise Linux is easily the best operating platform in the world, counting more than 90 percent of the Fortune 500 as customers.”

Oracle and Canonical collaborate on support for Oracle Linux on Ubuntu | Ubuntu Insights

As part of this collaboration, Canonical will support Ubuntu as a guest OS on Oracle Linux OpenStack, and Oracle will support Oracle Linux as a guest OS on Ubuntu OpenStack. Canonical will test Oracle Linux as a guest OS in its OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL) program. This gives customers the assurance the configuration is tested and supported by both organisations.

Oracle said in its blog post : _”It is important for us to provide choice and interoperability around __OpenStack. Oracle and Canonical are committed to supplying interoperability by supporting Oracle Linux on Ubuntu OpenStack. Our goal is to continue to provide customers with the best-in-class products and solutions and a great customer experience.”_

Mark Shuttleworth » Blog Archive » #8 – Ubuntu makes useful guarantees on every cloud

Every cloud behaves differently — both in terms of their architecture, and their economics. When we engage with the cloud operator we figure out how to ensure that Ubuntu is “optimal” on that cloud. Usually that means we figure out things like storage mechanisms (the classic example is S3 but we have to look at each cloud to see what they provide and how to take advantage of it) and ensure that data-heavy operations like system updates draw on those resources in the most cost-efficient manner. This way we try to ensure that using Ubuntu is a guarantee of the most cost-effective base OS experience on any given cloud.

Is XFCE a Zombie Project?

Debian switched to Xfce as the default desktop environment back in November 2013. But that didn’t last long because a few days ago, Debian restored GNOME as the default desktop, based on preliminary results from the Debian Desktop Requalification for Jessie.

According to Joey Hess, the Debian developer who performed this change, the main reasons for Debian switching back to GNOME as the default desktop are related to accessibility and systemd integration

Ubuntu Cluster Orange Box

The Orange Box is an innovative, custom designed micro cluster chassis, envisioned by Canonical, and contract manufactured by TranquilPC Limited. The chassis includes a small cluster of Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) boards, and is particularly well suited for portable demonstration and local prototyping of cloud workloads. The Orange Box, manufactured in the UK to exacting standards is available to order and ships internationally (free of charge).

Each Orange Box chassis contains:

  • 10x Intel NUCs
  • Specifically, the Ivy Bridge D53427RKE model

Each Intel NUC contains

  • i5-3427U CPU
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • 16GB of DDR3 RAM
  • 120GB SSD root disk
  • Intel Gigabit ethernet
  • D-Link DGS-1100-16 managed gigabit switch with 802.1q VLAN support

All 10 nodes are internally connected to this gigabit switch

In aggregate, this micro cluster effectively fields 40 cores, 160GB of RAM, 1.2TB of solid state storage, and is connected over an internal gigabit network fabric. A single fan quietly cools the power supply, while all of the nodes are passively cooled by aluminum heat sinks spanning each side of the chassis.

The first node, node0, additionally contains:

  • An Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 WiFi adapter
  • A 2TB HDD (spinning)
  • USB and HDMI ports are wired and accessible from the rear of the box
  • Access to the USB/HDMI of nodes1-9 is accessible from the underside of the unit

  • Six GBE LAN ports (all connected to the internal switch) are exposed to the rear panel, for external access, or even clustering of multiple Orange Boxes together.

New Unreal Tournament Game Will Be Available For Linux, Free

It also goes to show how they also believe in Linux to release their engine and new flagship game on Linux.

They want to involve the community in it as much as possible and see what people want from it. They have asked you to go to their forum and let rip on what you want.

Speaking on cost they said it themselves that it will be free. It\’s not \”free 2 play\”, it\’s just 100% free (and no I don\’t mean open-source). That\’s absolutely crazy to have a game as high calibre as Unreal Tournament being free.

They mentioned they will start with Deathmatch and that the game has only started today, so it\’s a long way off.

From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We\’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.

Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.

GNOME Wayland Is Approved For Fedora 21

The Wayland change for Fedora 21 is about better supporting GNOME Wayland sessions. Fedora 20 already brought experimental GNOME Shell Wayland support while Fedora 21 is building upon more polished support thanks to upstream improvements landing with GNOME 3.14 due out in September.

It\’s not for sure yet that a Wayland-based environment would replace the X.Org Server by default for Fedora 21, but at least the support will be in good standing.

In time for Fedora 21 will also be X.Org Server 1.16 which integrates basic XWayland support for running X11 applications atop Wayland without requiring separate X.Org patches.
