Alexa learns to talk like a human with whispers, pauses & emotion

a new set of speaking skills for the virtual assistant, which will allow her to do things like whisper, take a breath to pause for emphasis, adjust the rate, pitch and volume of her speech, and more. She’ll even be able to “bleep” out words — which may not be all that human, actually, but is certainly clever.

This speed will mean everything will work more quickly. Apps open faster, saves happen faster. A couple of benchmarks here, the 15 inch SSD is quoted as being twice as fast as the previous model. Also the latest USB C SSDs from Samsung are quoted at 450 MB/s read, 450 MB/s write for comparison.

The 2012 machine took 5 mins 50 seconds to render the output, while the 2016 model did the same job in 3 mins 5 seconds.

Canonical Clarifies Ubuntu Phone State: Nothing Really Until Snap-Based Image Ready

Pat shares that the Click-based Ubuntu Phone images are indeed on the way out, there will be no new Ubuntu Phone models until there is a “Snap image”, and they don’t plan to do an OTA-15 feature release. Canonical doesn’t plan to land any new features to the current stable PPA, but they will be providing security updates for important components.

Endless introduces Linux mini desktop PCs for American market

  • For the past few years Endless Computers has been making inexpensive Linux-based computers designed for use in emerging markets. Last summer the company also started working with PC makers to load its Endless OS software on some computers.

The Endless Mission One and Mission Mini are small, low power computers that sell for $249 or less. They should both be available for pre-order starting January 16th.

KDE Neon Now Available as Docker Image

  • I’m announcing a beta of KDE neon on Docker. Docker containers are a lightweight way to create a virtual system running on top of your normal Linux install but with its own filesystem and other rules to stop it getting in the way of your OS. They are insanely popular now for server deployment but I think they work just as well for checking out desktop and other UI setups.

  • To give it a try first setup docker as you would for your distro. For Ubuntu distros that means running:

NVidia New ShieldTV

  • Nvidia’s Shield set-top streaming device got an update at this year’s CES, and it was a big one: The new hardware is 40 percent smaller than the original, with a new Android 7.0 Nougat-based operating system and a redesigned UI that groups games together and just generally organizes things a bit more logically. It also handles 4K HDR content streaming, and boasts the most sources available for such content of any set-top streaming device currently available.

Pornhub 2016 – Linux up by 3%

  • When it comes to porn, we usually ask if you’re more into ass or tits, though the increasingly more important question when it comes to porn consumption is Apple or Android? And Pornhub never misses a chance to report on the different behavior between different OS users. So looking back at 2016, we (of course) dug into the difference in traffic and tastes by operating systems. Let’s start with desktop. While Windows continues to dominate when it comes to which operating system users count on to watch Pornhub (about 80% of desktop users), Mac OS and Linux are on the rise, with Mac OS up 8% in traffic share and Linux up an impressive 14%.

  • Message: I tried this out a few times throughout this year and was happy with it until i found out it will never support ZFS. solus os has some bells and whistles as far as steam goes. except for data integrity. simple question for Ike: Do you expect me to amass 500 gig of games over a cell phone connection and trust that data wont get bit rot with any other file system than ZFS? wanna re-download 10 of them over cell connection? i didn’t think so. ike has done a great job with solus os but it falls short if it leaves out ZFS. kinda like building a car by hand and equipping it with bicycle tires. you can still drive it on some roads maybe, under some circumstances. handicapped

ive been entrusting my data to a 2 TB ZFS mirror for 2 years now and i cringe thinking about anything else.when you dont have the time or resources, you use the best.

if solus had zfs, it would be a no-brainer, especially for a game machine.

  • Subject: Getting into a Linux Career

  • Message:

I have been listening to several of the shows that Jupiter Broadcasting has, and religiously tune in to LAS and Linux Unplugged every week. You guys are doing a great job!

Would studying with Linux Academy and getting my RHCA and RHCE be enough to get into a job making a decent wage? I know there is the Catch 22 of certs are worthless without experience. However, but if I am correct, RHCA and RHCE are performance based exams. Wouldn’t that be enough to get your foot in the door?

I have taken several Linux, Windows and Cisco courses back in 2005, 2006, however I know a lot has changed since then.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for everything you guys do at Jupiter Broadcasting and I want to wish you all a belated Happy New Year!

6 Ways Mr. Robot Is Putting Linux in the Public Eye

Google Online Security Blog: Disclosing vulnerabilities to protect users

After 7 days, per our published policy for actively exploited critical vulnerabilities, we are today disclosing the existence of a remaining critical vulnerability in Windows for which no advisory or fix has yet been released. This vulnerability is particularly serious because we know it is being actively exploited.

Aspyr + Linux Gamers = Cookies

This has led more answers on the same thread on the linux_gaming subreddit, where folks got together to order a delivery of delicious cookies to motivate Aspyr to support Linux’s Civ6 port. They come from Tiff’s Treats in Austin, in case you want to make sure you get excellent cookies if you pass by the area.

New MacBook Pros and the State of the Mac

The new MacBook Pro has a premium price for a Mac that’s still limited to 16 GB of RAM, has CPU performance that is likely lackluster because Apple didn’t talk about it in the keynote, and apparently doesn’t have such a great GPU, either. Apple prioritized thinness and lightness, which I care about hardly at all. I would rather have better performance, a good keyboard, more storage, a larger display, more ports so I don’t have to carry dongles, an SD card slot, etc. Double the weight and half the battery life would be fine with me. I’m not saying Apple shouldn’t make thin and light notebooks, but why do they all have to be that way?

Daring Fireball: Apples vs. Oranges — Thick, Heavy Oranges

There is a catch. The 15-inch Oryx Pro is 1-inch thick and weighs 5.5 pounds. The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is 0.6 inches thick and weighs 4 pounds. I’m not slamming the Oryx here — there are plenty of performance-hungry Mac users who wish that Apple made a MacBook this thick and heavy if it meant they could install up to 64 GB of RAM and had all the ports they wanted built-in.

The true reason the MBP doesn’t come with ddr4 or 32gb of ram, more technical then you think.

The true reason behind the lack of 32 GB or DDR4 is Intel. Skylake does not support LPDDR4 (LP for low power) RAM. Kabylake is set to include support, but only for the U category of chips. So no LPDDR4 support for mobile until 2018 I think.

One example is the Dell XPS 13. On the Dell XPS 13 version, you cannot go for 32 GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the 15 inches does give you that option, but you have to sacrifice battery life for it.

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller, in an email to MacRumors reader David, explained that for Apple to make a notebook with support for more than 16GB of RAM, it would have to use a memory system that consumes too much power. Regarding price, Schiller said in an interview that affordability is “absolutely something we care about” but that the company designs for experience rather than price.

I was really disappointed with today’s Apple event. It seems like Apple has either lost its way, that it has lost touch with what (some of) its customers want, or that it simply doesn’t care about those customers. Developers are a captive audience, and creative professionals can switch to Windows, I guess. Apple no longer considers them core.

There’s nothing particularly wrong with what Apple announced. I like Thunderbolt 3. The display looks good. I’m not crazy about Touch Bar, but it does seem potentially useful. The problem is that the MacBook Pro is not a true Pro notebook.

A fart app for the new Macbook Pro’s Touch Bar. I’m usually the first one to make a fart app when the opportunity presents itself, so why not?

Stuck between a rock and a hard place

It’s been 4 years since the last substantial update to the MacBook Pro. The exact reasons why Apple decided to neglect their pro equipment, and why they still have not updated the Mac Pro or the iMac are known only to Apple, but it seems reasonable to assume that if Mac’s were still their main profit generator that this would not have happened. The iPhone is updated like clockwork at the same time every year.

Apple calls it “the most powerful MacBook Pro ever,” and the 13-inch model features a 2.9 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost speeds.

  • up to 3.3 GHz, 8GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage.
  • The 15-inch version has a 2.6 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.5 GHz
  • 16GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage.
  • Both computers reach “up to 2.3 times the graphics performance” of the previous generation.

  • Each edition includes SSDs with sequential read speeds over 3GBps, and the ability to drive a 5K display through a single Thunderbolt 3 ports

• Why is it limited to 16GB of RAM? Supporting more RAM would just require a bigger battery, so instead of making it thinner, they could have included 32GB of RAM and kept it the same width as the previous model

Although this is technically true, there is a seemingly little-known legal obstacle to this. The Federal Aviation Administration has capped the maximum allowable size of laptop batteries on flights to 100 watt-hours. That explains why Apple’s pro model contains _precisely_a 99.5 watt-hour battery. Making a thicker laptop would not allow them to increase the size of the battery due to these regulations.

Apple’s new 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro models come equipped with a Touch Bar — that bar and the accompanying Touch ID sensor are powered by both the Intel processor at the core of the laptop and an Apple designed T1 chip. That T1 is the same chip that is inside the S2 in the new Series 2 Apple Watch.

The T1 consists of the processor in the Apple Watch’s S2 and the Secure Enclave.

Mike Gets a new Rig, the Lemur

I am making a bet that the puck is going toward Linux powered AI.

.NET on Linux – bye, Windows 10.

My point is that if you’re not tied up to some specific technology which is not cross platform (which usually means for the Windows users only), you might want to give a try to some other environment. It’s always a good thing to try out something new, hone skills and broaden your horizons.

Canonical Strikes Deal To Bring Ubuntu Core to Intel Gateways

Oft-neglected in talk of smart refrigerators and network-controlled lightbulbs, Gateways are intrinsic to the ‘Internet of Things’. They act as the “middleman” in the Internet-of-Things, ferrying data from sensors and equipment in the real world to and from that stored and analysed in the cloud.

Leaving Mycroft

Today I am sharing the news that I will be leaving Mycroft AI, Inc. I love my team and have thoroughly enjoyed working on the project, but have decided to pursue other ventures.

Linux on the MacBook

MacBook Model

Installing Arch Linux on a MacBook (Air/Pro) or an iMac is quite similar to installing it on any other computer. However, due to the specific hardware configuration of a Mac, there are a few deviations and special considerations which warrant a separate guide

This wiki page should help you in getting your MacBook Pro from Late 2013 or Mid 2014 to work with Arch Linux.

Post-Show:

On the visual side, we have brought the app in line with our Suru visual language. We have also adopted the very nice Solarized palette as the default palette — though this will of course be completely customisable by the user.
