NASDAQ leaks test data

  • Financial Times link- paywall

  • A data glitch briefly made online games group Zynga more valuable than Goldman Sachs when prices of a host of Nasdaq-listed stocks including Amazon, Apple and Microsoft were reset to exactly $123.47.

  • Prices on Nasdaq’s official website appeared unaltered but those shown on financial data services including Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters and Google Finance did display the price changes to $123.47.

  • New York Stock Exchange data were unaffected. Typically, vendors discard the test prices when checks are done. While the reason this did not happen for Nasdaq on Monday is not known, there was speculation it was linked to changed timings on the eve of the US Independence Day holiday.

  • “It was no error by Nasdaq,” the exchange operator said. “Some vendors took test data and put it out as live prices.”

  • Nasdaq said the glitch did not affect any market trading, including after hours. However, traders in Hong Kong said they saw a handful of trades reported at those prices, although many deals were subsequently cancelled.

Taking Control of All .io Domains With a Targeted Registration

  • Previous post same person – The Hidden Risks of Domain Extensions

  • The .io domain has several top level DNS servers under .io (e.g. a1.io)

  • Not so much an exploit as failure of TLD to protect its assets

  • Hard part is finding the servers which can be registered and then registering them

  • Dan notes that .org does not suffer as easily from this problem because all of the .org NS records are under a given domain: org.afilias-nst.info. (re dig NS org. @k.root-servers.net.)

New Petya malware encrypts the Master Boot Record then BSoDs your machine

  • “Malware experts from German security firm G DATA have found a new type of lock-ransomware that uses a DOS-level lock screen to prevent users from accessing their files”
  • Unlike some other malware, the researchers did not come up with the name, the malware has its own website and logo, where you pay the ransom
  • I am not sure “DOS-level” makes sense as a term, but ok
  • “Lock-ransomware, also known as lockers, is the first type of ransomware that existed before the rise of crypto-ransomware. This type of ransomware doesn’t encrypt files, but merely blocks the user’s access to his data”
  • “The latest lock-ransomware discovered by security researchers is the Petya ransomware, which was seen spread via spear-phishing campaigns aimed at human resource departments. HR employees are sent an email with a link to a file stored on Dropbox, where an applicant’s CV can be downloaded. This file is an EXE file named portfolio-packed.exe, which if executed, immediately crashes the system into a standard Windows blue screen of death.”
  • “As soon as the user restarts the PC after the blue screen, the computer will enter a fake check disk (CHKDSK) process that, after it finishes, will load Petya’s lock screen. Restarting the computer over and over will always enter this screen”
  • “This screen provides a link to the ransomware’s payment site, hosted on Tor. After the user purchases a decryption key, he can enter it at the bottom of the DOS lock screen. Petya claims to encrypt the user’s files, but G DATA says they can’t verify its claims, and that this is presumably a lie.”
  • “UPDATE: Trend Micro’s researchers also took a look at Petya and they confirm that the ransomware does encrypt files, while also revealing it alters the MBR , preventing users from entering in Safe Mode, and it ask for a 0.99 Bitcoin (~$400) ransom”
  • The encryption of the boot sector is very simple, the data is just XOR’d with the value 0x37 (the ascii code for the number 7): Animated GIF
  • Additional Coverage: Threat Post

New USB Thief trojan found in the wild

  • Researchers at ESET have identified a new trojan being spread on USB sticks, called “USB Thief”
  • What makes this malware so unique is how it protects itself from analysis by researchers
  • “Each instance of this trojan relies on the particular USB device on which it is installed and it leaves no evidence on the compromised system. Moreover, it uses a very special mechanism to protect itself from being reproduced or copied, which makes it even harder to detect.”
  • “It depends on the increasingly common practice of storing portable versions of popular applications such as Firefox, NotePad++ and TrueCrypt on USB drives. The malware takes advantage of this trend by inserting itself into the command chain of such applications, in the form of a plugin or a dynamically linked library (DLL). And therefore, whenever such an application is executed, the malware will also be run in the background.”
  • “The malware consists of six files. Four of them are executables and the other two contain configuration data. To protect itself from copying or reverse engineering, the malware uses two techniques. Firstly, some of the individual files are AES128-encrypted; secondly, their filenames are generated from cryptographic elements. The AES encryption key is computed from the unique USB device ID, and certain disk properties of the USB drive hosting the malware. Hence, the malware can only run successfully from that particular USB device.”
  • So when researchers copied the malware to a VM to try to dissect it, it stopped working, as it could no longer decrypt its payload
  • “It was quite challenging to analyze this malware because we had no access to any malicious USB device. Moreover, we had no dropper, so we could not create a suitably afflicted USB drive under controlled conditions for further analysis.”
  • “Only the submitted files can be analyzed, so the unique device ID had to be brute-forced and combined with common USB disk properties. Moreover, after successful decryption of the malware files, we had to find out the right order of the executables and configuration files, because the file copying process to get the samples to us had changed the file creation timestamp on the samples.”
  • “Finally, the payload implements the actual data-stealing functionality. The executable is injected into a newly created “%windir%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs” process. Configuration data includes information on what data should be gathered, how they should be encrypted, and where they should be stored. The output destination must always be on the same removable device. In the case we analyzed, it was configured to steal all data files such as images or documents, the whole windows registry tree (HKCU), file lists from all of the drives, and information gathered using an imported open-source application called “WinAudit”. It encrypts the stolen data using elliptic curve cryptography.”
  • “In addition to the interesting concept of self-protecting multi-stage malware, the (relatively simple) data-stealing payload is very powerful, especially since it does not leave any evidence on the affected computer. After the USB is removed, nobody can find out that data was stolen. Also, it would not be difficult to redesign the malware to change from a data-stealing payload to any other malicious payload.”

Six people charged in hacked lottery terminal scam

  • “Connecticut prosecutors say the group conspired to manipulate automated ticket dispensers to run off “5 Card Cash” tickets that granted on-the-spot payouts in the US state.”
  • “According to the Hartford Courant, a group of shop owners and employees setup the machines to process a flood of tickets at once, which caused a temporary display freeze. This allowed operators to see which of the tickets about to be dispensed would be winning ones, cancel the duff ones, and print the good ones.”
  • “While those reports were being processed, the operator could enter sales for 5 Card Cash tickets,” the newspaper reports. “Before the tickets would print, however, the operator could see on a screen if the tickets were instant winners.”
  • “The Courant says that the lottery commission wised up to the scheme back in November when it heard that people were winning the 5 Card Cash game at a higher-than-expected rate. The game was temporarily halted. The paper notes that more arrests are expected in the case.”
  • In Ontario, there are special provisions for when an employee of the store wants to buy a lottery ticket, specifically to deal with crimes of this nature
  • The other common lottery crime was replacing a customer large payout winning ticket with a smaller one. The employee would buy a number of tickets, keep the small winners ($10), and swap them for the larger winning tickets of unsuspecting customers when they came in to cash them
  • It is now common place for there to be an automated lottery checking machine that is used directly by the customer.
  • The ticket machines in Ontario also play an audible tune when a winning ticket is scanner, much to the annoyance of people who have to work there all day, but it ensures that customers are not ripped off

Snoosaphone Writes:

Hello JB,

Just wanted to send a message to everyone at Jupiter Broadcasting to let you know how wonderful I’ve found all of the shows. I got hooked on LAS and soon got sucked into listening/watching every single show (sometimes at work). It would be quite amazing to work with a group such as yours though I’m not entirely sure if that could happen due to my home residing in Minnesota.

Which brings me to the second part. If there is a way to help out with anything from a distance let me know! Not sure what the needs are for JB, but I thought it would be nice to at least offer and see where it goes.

On to the final and quite a bit more serious point to this email. After watching Tech Talk Today Ep. 137, I’ve been thinking about whether or not it would be good to share my thoughts on the health reboot for Chris. Finally the barriers have broken down and here it is: There is one primarily glaring issue for all of the problems he/you are having, which is stress (or rather the handling of). Over many years I had dealt with many of the same issues, and in some ways still do. The number one thing that helped me was taking a step back. Putting distance between oneself and the sources of stress. Now of course that is highly easy to say and very difficult to implement, but it’s necessary to look at all of the angles in order to solve a problem. The number one solution I found for my stress management came down to taking a 10 minute “meditation” a couple times a week. The fixes are sometimes small and easy, so just keep looking if you haven’t found yours yet.

Of course, I’m a random person on the internet and such advice should be taken skeptically, but a it seemed like a good perspective to share.

Best regards,
Snoosaphone

Hey Chris, huge fan of the show. I live in Spokane and was curious if you guys ever did any internships. I love linux and have been running it as early as my teen years with the days of early days of Ubuntu. Just a thought! Keep up the great work. You guys are amazing.

Michael Writes:

before I forget a small suggestion, have you thought about putting one of those cool “jupitor’ square (triangle) news things on the live mic. (like NBC news etc)

It looks cool, and stops people from wanting to grab the mic away from the interviewer.

The tech on the show was just fantastic, and that everyone knows LAS and supports it is great for you guys, but more importantly, its great for Linux.

Thanks for that.

Jakes Writes:

I was watching your Special Friday edition of Tech Talk Today and Chris was talking about weight managment and getting energy so on and so forth. I two have been on a regiment of weight loss and so far have lost about 20 lbs. since January of this year. I want to lose 30 lbs. by my birthday in March and ultimately 100 lbs. by next year.

One of the biggest curves I had was to break the mental urge to eat especially when I was bored. It even was so bad that it felt that I was having withdrawls. What has been helping me through this phase is just documenting and adjusting my eating habits. Infact I have done so well that on average my calorie intake has been around 1700/net a day. I walk every other day and I also started to do targeted weightlifing. Especially in areas of the most concetrated fat.

I am writing this to let you know that you are not alone in this effort and I wish you the best of luck in your goals.

I’m not sure what happened, but I remember reading a thread somewhere about your unprofessional behavior in the last unfilter ep. Maybe I missed it because I don’t listen to the subscriber’s show regularly but it was something something unprofessional something something cannabis show? Anyway, that thread made me double my patreon pledge to you guys. I know some people in that thread said they were dropping out because of whatever happened, well as someone who appreciates where you are going with this I felt I had to put up or shut up. Make a cannabis show. I’ll listen the fuck out of that. You know who else will? Stoners. We are fucking everywhere. I loved your rant in Unfilter 133. Keep up the good work.
Permission: I grant permission to read or post this feedback on-air and/or on the website.

Michael Writes:

Hi Chris and Allan,

Congratulations on making it to 200 without skipping a beat. Wow.

I have a two plus hour commute every day, and listening to Techsnap (and BSDnow) makes the drive easier and is an excellent use of the time.

You are my main source of tech news, and help me to keep with all sorts of the latest tech developments.

I have been in IT for more years than I care to remember, including a few way back in the 90s as a part-time unix sys admin. Unfortunately I am now largely hands off :-(. On the plus side I can inform and influence the directions our team, which includes about ten developers and a couple of admins, takes.

Connecting the dots, Techsnap informs and influences me, which in turn helps inform and influence my colleagues, our team and projects.

Thank you for your impressive time and effort. You have helped me be better at my job.

Looking forward to the next two hundred :-).

To revive an old tradition!

Corey Writes:

Hi Chris and Angela!

A local brewery came out with a new beer recently, it’s a Star Trek themed beer called Klingon Warnog, and it’s fantastic. It’s a very nice Roggen Dunkel, which is a Rye based dark German lager, very nice bit of spice to it, with and a wonderful dry finish. I picked one up for myself when it was released, and I thought Chris would absolutely love this, being a fan of not only beer, but Star Trek as well. So I was at the store today, and I said what the hell, and I bought one for him. I would like to ship it to you if that’s ok with you guys. Feel free to email me to let me know if it’s ok to send this to you. Anyways, keep up the good work! I absolutely love all the hard work you guys put in to keeping this website awesome.

(Attached is a picture of the front of the can)

Cheers!

Zimmerman Trial a Distraction?

For the record, that’s where I’m coming from regarding the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin murder trial in Florida — a lamentable tragedy of errors marketed as a multimedia morality play on the combustible theme of race. It makes me crazy to see what I call the Mighty MSNBC Art Players and other media figures fictionalize, dissemble and play fast and loose with facts. The case is troubling enough without turning the participants into political symbols.

Latest Leaks

Abby Martin talks to Russell Tice, former intelligence analyst and original NSA whistleblower, about how the recent NSA scandal is only scratches the surface of a massive surveillance apparatus, citing specific targets the he saw spying orders for including former senators Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama.

But Inglis’ statement was new. Analysts look “two or three hops” from terror suspects when evaluating terror activity, Inglis revealed. Previously, the limit of how surveillance was extended had been described as two hops. This meant that if the NSA were following a phone metadata or web trail from a terror suspect, it could also look at the calls from the people that suspect has spoken with—one hop. And then, the calls that second person had also spoken with—two hops. Terror suspect to person two to person three. Two hops. And now: A third hop.

For a sense of scale, researchers at the University of Milan found in 2011 that everyone on the Internet was, on average, 4.74 steps away from anyone else. The NSA explores relationships up to three of those steps. (See our conversation with the ACLU’s Alex Abdo on this.)

Plaintiffs include: GreenPeace, Human Rights Watch and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. CalGuns, which lobbies against more restrictive gun laws, and one California gun manufacturer, Franklin Armory, have also joined the case, as have religious groups including the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The suit was brought by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights advocacy group and law firm. It asserts that the NSA’s “dragnet surveillance” – which extends to millions of Americans – is illegal and unconstitutional.

Other organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, have also recently sued the NSA in response to leaked information on its surveillance programs. This most recent case is especially notable in that it represents a broad coalition of groups that often don’t have much use for each other.

Approximately 160 billion envelopes, packages and postcards were photographed by the United States Postal Service last year, reports The New York Times.

The American Civil Liberties Union has released documents confirming that police license plate readers capture vast amounts of data on innocent people, and in many instances this intelligence is kept forever.

According to documents obtained through a number of Freedom of
Information Act requests filed by ACLU offices across the United
States, law enforcement agencies are tracking the whereabouts of
innocent persons en masse by utilizing a still up-and-coming
technology.

In some jurisdictions, that information is then held forever.
FOIA requests obtained by the ACLU estimated that authorities in
Jersey City, New Jersey have accumulated 10 million license plate
records as of last year — in a town of only 250,000 — because
retention policies allow officials to keep that data for five
years. In Milpitas, California — a town with roughly four times
the population — has no retention policy and has picked up around
4.7 million plates.

Some authorities such as Minnesota State Patrol delete all their scanned records after 48 hours. Others are much looser in their regulations, such as the town of Milpitas in California, population 67,000, which stores almost 5m plate reads with no time limits at all.

Soon, I will introduce legislation that would repeal the laws that brought us our current “surveillance state”: the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendments Act. My bill would restore the probable cause-based warrant requirement for any surveillance against an American citizen being proposed on the basis of an alleged threat to the nation.

Where in the World is Snowden

WikiLeaks, which has been advising Snowden, announced his application in a tweet: “Edward Snowden today has filed for a temporary protection visa with Russia’s ministry of immigration.”

National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden on Tuesday submitted a request for temporary asylum in Russia, his lawyer said.

Anatoly Kucherena, a lawyer who is a member of the Public Chamber, a Kremlin advisory body, said that Snowden submitted the asylum request to Russia’s Federal Migration Service. The service had no immediate comment.

Kucherena told The Associated Press that he met Snowden in the transit zone of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport and Snowden made the request after the meeting.

“In order to take documents with him that proved that what he was saying was true he had to take ones that included very sensitive, detailed blueprints of how the NSA does what they do,” Greenwald said in Brazil, adding that the interview was taking place about four hours after his last interaction with Snowden.

Former two-term GOP Senator Gordon Humphrey of New Hampshire emailed Edward Snowden
