Fedora 24 released!

The Fedora 24 Workstation release features GNOME 3.20, with many usability improvements such as easier input device and printer settings, a better search interface, shortcut windows for keyboard commands, and more convenient music controls.

Flatpak (formerly xdg-app) is another building-block feature, with Software able to track installed Flatpaks and adding more features in the future as the technology develops. The Software app has also grown features to provide a full system upgrade directly from the desktop from one Fedora release to the next, and the ability to provide labeling as well as reviews of available software.

Fedora 24 continues our work on the X replacement, Wayland, a next-generation graphics stack. Although this release will not default to Wayland, it includes many improvements and is available as an option for users to try out, and potentially will be the default stack in Fedora 25.

Before you do anything, you will want to make sure you have the latest software for Fedora 23 before beginning the upgrade process. Additionally, make sure you back up your system before proceeding. One popular tool available in Fedora for this purpose is deja-dup. To update your software, use GNOME Software or enter the following command in a terminal.

Mycroft Core, v0.7 – Responsive Listening, 3rd Party Skills

Today marks the release of a new version of Mycroft. This moves us from the 0.6.X versioning to 0.7 – putting us closer to a 1.0 release. This is a significant update because it contains a large rethinking of the listener that Mycroft uses. The result is our new “Responsive Listening” mode.

Once they have been more thoroughly tested, swarm mode and other additions to 1.12 will find their way into the company’s commercial offerings in the second half of 2016.

AMD state they will support Vulkan on Linux in an upcoming amdgpu driver, not ready yet

AMD has been participating in Vulkan’s development since its inception and providing builds of our Vulkan-enabled driver to game developers for many months. As we transition into the public phase, our initial driver release enables Vulkan support for select Radeon(tm) GPUs on Windows(r) 7, Windows(r) 8.1, and Windows(r) 10. An upcoming release of the amdgpu Linux driver will also feature Vulkan support.

Today is an exciting day for PC gaming enthusiasts: the Khronos Group has announced immediate public release of the open standard Vulkan(tm) 1.0 graphics API! To mark the occasion, we’ve posted a Radeon Software beta for Vulkan. This graphics driver is primarily intended to enable a wider audience of game developers to work with Vulkan on Radeon(tm) graphics.

Qt Company Joins Khronos, Working On Vulkan Support In Qt

The Qt Company confirmed in this blog post that they are working on implementing already Qt support for Vulkan.

Ok, first, in GPU-bound scenarios (ultra settings, resolution higher than full HD), you’ll see lower performance, 20 to 30% lower. This is work in progress, and we (both Croteam and IHVs) are analyzing and optimizing the performance. We’ll get to the bottom of this!

Korora 23 Screencast and Screenshots

The Korora Project has released version 23 (codename “Coral”) which is now available for download.

Existing 23 beta users do not need to re-install, just keep installing regular updates.

For the last three months we have been waiting for the RPMFusion repositories to be declared stable before releasing Korora 23. These community packages provide support for things that Fedora doesn’t normally ship, like multi-media codecs and proprietary kernel drivers. Normally, the stable RPMFusion repositories are available a few weeks after a Fedora release, however the community has moved to new infrastructure and this has caused some delays.

Virgil 3D GPU project by virgil3d

The project entails creating a virtual 3D capable graphics card for virtual machines running inside qemu. The design of this card is based around the concepts of Gallium3D to make writing Mesa and (eventually) Direct3D drivers for it easy.

virtio-gpu is a driver for virtualization guests that allows to use the host graphics card efficiently. In this release, it allows the virtualization guest to use the capabilities of the host GPU to accelerate 3D rendering. In practice, this means that a virtualized linux guest can run a opengl game while using the GPU acceleration capabilities of the host, as show in this or this video. This also requires running QEMU 2.5.
