  • MATE 1.20 — The theme for this release has been stabilising the MATE Desktop by replacing deprecated code and modernising large sections of the code base. We’ve also improved our window manager (Marco) and added support for HiDPI. Along the way we’ve fixed hundreds of bugs. Squished ’em dead!
  • Plasma 5.12 — Speed and memory improvements are the focus of this long-term release. The new Plasma LTS uses less CPU and less memory than previous versions. The process of starting the Plasma desktop is now significantly faster.
  • VLC 3.0 — Network browsing for distant filesystems (SMB, FTP, SFTP, NFS…)
  • Nextcloud 13 — This release brings improvements to the core File Sync and Share like easier moving of files and a tech preview of our end-to-end encryption for the ultimate protection of your data. It also introduces collaboration and communication capabilities, like auto-complete of comments and integrated real-time chat and video communication.
  • Android x86 7.1 — It’s a full port of Android, instead of being more of an application player like other solutions.
  • Bliss-x86 Oreo 8.x
  • Changes coming to elementary OS AppCenter — One of the primary goals of developing AppCenter Dashboard was to build a sustainable app ecosystem. I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that although the AppCenter ecosystem is growing, nobody can make a living on it yet. That’s what we mean when we say “sustainable”. Writing apps is a real, hard, full-time job. If we want to see more high-quality, Open Source apps then we need to prioritize getting third-party app developers paid.
  • Elementary OS Juno will be version 5.0, not 0.5 — Among them a small yet appreciable bump to the version number. Yes elementary OS 0.5 Juno will actually be elementary OS 5.0.
  • Announcing “Project Things” — We kicked off “Project Things”, with the goal of building a decentralized ‘Internet of Things’ that is focused on security, privacy, and interoperability.
  • Nintendo Switch runs Linux — According to fail0verflow, there’s a flaw in the boot ROM in Nvidia’s Tegra X1 system-on-a-chip. when your console starts, it reads and executes a piece of code stored in a read-only memory (hence the name ROM). This code contains instructions about the booting process.

Welcome To The (Ubuntu) Bionic Age: Nautilus, a LTS and desktop icons

If you are following closely the news of various tech websites, one of the latest hot topic in the community was about Nautilus removing desktop icons. Let’s try to clarify some points to ensure the various discussions around it have enough background information and not reacting on emotions only as it could be seen lately. You will have both downstream (mine) and upstream (Carlos) perspectives here.

  1. Stick with Nautilus 3.26 and keep desktop icon support
  2. Ship Nautilus 3.28 and Nemo to support desktop icons
  3. Ship Nautilus 3.28 and use an extension to draw desktop icons

MATE is Lookin Good!

MATE is landing new and improved support for HiDPI.

20 Years of LWN

Over the following years we have borne witness to a long series of events
that none of us could really have predicted. Linux got caught up in the dotcom boom and, with the VA Linux Systems IPO, came to epitomize its excesses, but when that boom went boom, Linux was still there, stronger than ever.

The SCO Group tried to steal our community’s work and turn it into its own
rent-generating machine; in the process of fending them off it was made
clear that the Linux kernel had one of the cleanest code bases around.
Companies discovered our little hobbyist system and invested billions into
it, massively accelerating development at all levels of the system.
We learned how to scale development communities from dozens of developers
up to many thousands of developers.

The security environment, which was initially defending against script
kiddies playing their own form of Capture the Flag, became a fight against
spammers, organized criminals, and nation states with vast resources.
Google bought an obscure phone operating system called Android and used it
to dominate the phone market; as a result, we got mobile devices that are
far more open than they would otherwise have been.

Linux became the base software supporting the bulk of the Internet economy;
some of our biggest contributors do not distribute Linux at all, but they
use it internally and want to help make it work better.

Linux Academy

Once up on a time us writing about ___”yet another music player”___was a meme-like weekly occurrence.

Same goes for video players, download managers, instant messengers, torrent apps, image editors, Twitter apps, image viewers, text editors, photo uploaders, etc — you name it, we probably wrote about it! It seemed, for a long while, that app developers were out there en masse, crafting quality apps to satisfy the full gamut of end-user needs.

These days the availability of new native Linux apps which cater to users of the most popular Linux distributions seem few and far between.

Plasma 5.12 LTS Beta Makes Your Desktop Smoother and Speedier

Plasma 5.12 LTS Beta is the second long term support release from the Plasma 5 team. We have been working hard focusing on speed and stability for this release. Boot time to desktop has been improved by reviewing the code for anything which blocks execution. The team has been triaging and fixing bugs in every aspect of the codebase, tidying up artwork, removing corner cases and ensuring cross desktop integration. For the first time we offer our Wayland integration on long term support so you can be sure we will continue to fix bugs over the coming releases.

KDE’s KWin Now Considers Its X11 Code To Be Under An “Eternal Feature Freeze”

With KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS, the KWin window manager / compositor’s X11/X.Org code will now be under an “eternal feature freeze” as development will focus more on Wayland.
KWin maintainer Martin Flöser has confirmed the KWin/X11 code is now considered feature frozen as for Plasma 5.13 and the future they will be focused on Wayland. Features may get added for the KWin on X11, but only when it’s in common code-paths and not writing any new X11-specific feature code.

Linus prefers the XPS 13

Right now the XPS13 stands out due to the thin bezel, which really does maximize the screen size for the size of machine. That was really what made me pick it for Daniela in the first place. It just ends up hitting my two primary goals very well: small and portable, but with the biggest screen you can cram into that size.
+ Linus bought two. One for him, and one for his daughter.

Plex vs Emby

Using Kodi Directly vs Plex/Emby

  • Plex and Emby are not as fast as just basic Kodi pointing at some files on a local disk.
  • Requires fairly reliable networking.
  • Much better media identification.
  • Real, easy to use for you and family streaming.
  • Plex sharing.

Plex and Emby Licensing

Plex
Emby
Emby with the premium Emby Premiere features unlocked.

At some point, the developers of Emby added a nasty nag screen before playback. Worse, you need to wait a few seconds before being able to dismiss it. They refuse to address removing it as seen here.
This is bullshit for a GPLv2 licensed product. Of course someone is going to fork Emby to remove it.
So while my main motivation was to remove the nag screen, unlocking all the premium features proved the simplest way.

  • Fedora 27 released — The Workstation edition of Fedora 27 features GNOME 3.26. In the new release, both the Display and Network configuration panels have been updated, along with the overall Settings panel appearance improvement.
  • Firefox 57 arrives — It’s by far the biggest update we’ve had since we launched Firefox 1.0 in 2004
  • There’s an option for people who don’t like change — a fork of the Mozilla code-base pre-Servo/Rust… Basically for those not liking the direction of Firefox with v57 rolling out the Quantum changes, etc.
  • Ubuntu Unity 7 flavour might be on the horizon — A proposal to create a new community Ubuntu flavor which uses the Unity 7 desktop by default is gathering support within the Ubuntu community.
  • LTS kernel 4.14 released — Anyway, go out and test the new 4.14 release, that is slated to be the
next LTS kernel – and start sending me pull request for the 4.15 merge
    window.
  • RISC-V support may be coming to 4.15 — RISC-V is hoping to see mainline with Linux 4.15. We’ve known for a while now about their mainline ambitions for 4.15 and a pull request was sent today, but it remains to be seen yet if Linus Torvalds will pull it for this merge window.
