ANGELA: This is Women’s Tech Radio.
PAIGE: A show on the Jupiter Broadcasting Network interviewing interesting women in technology. Exploring their roles and how they are successful in technology. I’m Paige.
ANGELA: And I”m Angela. Are you sure about that Paige?
PAIGE: Today I’m not. It’s been a long day at the conference here.
ANGELA: Yes.
PAIGE: So, we are live here at Linux Fest Northwest. And we got to pull some awesome people off the floor to do interviews today, and our first interview is Andrea Frost. Andrea is a current computer science major. She is getting her Master’s in Computer Science and she gets to talk to us today about robotics, and education, and community building, and a whole bunch of awesome issues that we just dove into.
ANGELA: And before we get into the interview, I want to mention that you can support Women’s Tech Radio and the Jupiter Broadcasting Network by going to patreon.com/jupitersignal. You can donate as little as $3.00 a month or whatever amount you want. There’s a swag level where you get free stuff in the mail, or you can just ,like I said, do $3.00 a month. But either way, it’s a giant bucket. It funds all the shows on the network, and specially Women’s Tech Radio, it keeps us going. And now we will get into the interview.
PAIGE: Yeah, so we started today by asking Andrea what she is into in technology right now.
So, welcome to Women’s Tech Radio. I’m Paige
ANGELA: And I’m Angela.
PAIGE: And we’re here live at Linux Fest Northwest and we have an awesome guest joining us, and she’ll take a moment to introduce herself.
ANDREA: Hi, I’m Andrea Frost. I’m getting a Master’s in Computer Science at Western Washington University, and an active member of the WWU Association for Women in Computing.
PAIGE: Awesome. Andrea is joining us to tell us about some of her work as a student, and also her work with getting women involved in technology.
ANGELA: Extensive work in community building and getting more women in technology.
PAIGE: Yeah, we found her on the show floor, or she found us, or a little of both, and we’re just super excited to talk to you. So, could you tell us a little bit about what you’re up to for the community?
ANDREA: Sure, there’s a lot of things, so I’ll try to keep it short. More recently, or coming up pretty soon we’re doing and open source day on May 9th. So, basically what we’re doing is, we’re just trying to expose people to what open source is, and how do you find a project, how do you contribute. So, we’re still looking for mentors and sponsorship. But the event, there’s like 100 people coming. So, that’s super exciting. And then we’re also doing –
PAIGE: Hold on. Okay, May 9th, where?
ANDREA: Yes, May 9th at Western Washington University in the Viking Union 565. It’s the fifth floor.
PAIGE: Okay, how do people find out to volunteer or anything like that?
ANDREA: Well, you can email — can I give my personal email?
PAIGE: If you want to.
ANGELA: Yeah.
ANDREA: Okay, so my email is andreafrost@hotmail.com You can also look us up online, the Association for Women in Computing, and just do WWAWC and then you’ll find our website and there’s contact info there as well.
PAIGE: Awesome. So, they contact you via the Association for Women in Computing?
ANDREA: That’s right.
ANGELA: Cool, so that’s your first thing, and what’s your next thing?
ANDREA: The next thing is that I’m also cofounding a startup in Bellingham, which is a code school called Code Lily. This summer we’re going to be hosting a Whatcom Robotics Expo in cooperation with Western and the Association for Women in Computing, and all of the other robotics related groups. We’re going to bring everyone together under one roof and create that road map so that people can, no matter what age your are, you know where you can find other robotics activities and who are the right people to connect with, and connect everyone to each other.
PAIGE: That’s awesome.
ANGELA: And that’s a four-hour, would you consider it a workshop or a lecture?
ANDREA: It’s from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and it’s free. So, you can basically just drop in any time you want. We’re just going to have the room set up in demo style, so all the different groups are going to be demoing something and then they’re also going to have a way for you, the participants to actually be able to dig in with your own hands and build your own robots. There’s some Littlebits. There’s just a lot of different Robotics activities going on in Whatcom county that most people don’t know about. So, it will be both demos, but also workshops where you can get involved. Each group will be speaking a little bit about their group at some point throughout the day.
PAIGE: So, robots is one of your passions?
ANDREA: I love robots. It’s actually kind of a side thing, but it’s just such an accessible way to relate with technology and computer science specifically, because rather than working in a terminal where you can’t really see something happening, persay, with robots you can actually see it light up. You can see it move. You can actually watch the wheels turn. It’s very tangible. Where, I think, when you’re first starting out with computers that can be a big barrier for a lot of people. I just think robots are a really accessible way to get introduced to it all.
PAIGE: I think that’s a lot of the same reason web tech is that same draw, because you put something up and it’s there right away. How did you get started? What got you into it?
ANDREA: Well, I have a German degree from 2003, so I’m a returning student coming back to school. I traveled for most of my 20s and I was a (unintelligible) firefighter in Alaska. I hurt my leg and I couldn’t work on my feet anymore. I was really stuck. I was like, oh my gosh, what am I going to do now. I worked at a law office for a couple years and I was really under stimulated there. I felt under valued, under stimulated. I tutored my friend’s daughters in math and decided to go back to school to get a master’s in math to become a math teacher. I saw a pretty big problem just with the stigma around math. I couldn’t believe that so many girls get so far without learning the fundamentals of math and thinking that they suck at math. Or thinking I hate math. Math sucks. Math is in everything we do. Math is so beautiful. It’s in everything we look at in nature. So, I think we as a community need to do a better job of promoting women in science, stem, mathematics, all those things. My quarter back in school I took a computer programing class as a prerequisite for the math degree and I was like, what is that? I don’t know what I”m doing. But I ended up getting an A. I did really well. It just blew me away what we can do with a little bit of code on a screen. You can make tremendous changes in the world. I went to the Grace Hopper Conference a couple years ago and I met women from all over the world who are writing things — a simple cellphone app is changing the lives for millions of people in Turkey and Africa, everywhere. I think, women especially, really bring a social component that I personally believe is a little bit lacking currently. I wish there was more focus on morals and ethics and all that kind of stuff around computing too. I think the more diversity we have in computing, we just as a world, as a people will move in a better direction.
ANGELA: Definitely.
PAIGE: Technology is one of the most powerful tools we have right now, just in general. Diverse thinking is only going to make that better.
ANDREA: Absolutely.
PAIGE: And used in a more responsible manner.
ANDREA: Absolutely. Yeah, so diverse teams are basically essential. If you look at a standard computer science class you’re not going to see that many women. Our club is very, very focused on building, not necessarily tutoring each other or helping with homework, but just building community and support so that if we have a hard assignment or have a bad day, it’s like okay lets commiserate about that and then move forward. Where without that community and friendship, and being able to smile at each other in the halls. Things that are very simple, a lot of people without that just tend to give up for feel like they don’t belong there. What we do with our club has really changed a lot of lives. Especially the outreach that we do with kids in our community. It’s just really changing the whole direction of who is in involved in technology and what we can do with it.
ANGELA: What associations do you belong to that help support this?
ANDREA: Most recently we have the Creators and Innovators Club for GIrls, CICE for short. That is a pilot program started this year in Bellingham School District. We thought we we would have 15 girls or so, and we ended up having 57.
PAIGE: Oh my goodness.
ANGELA: Which is amazing.
ANDREA: It is amazing, but we don’t have enough robots for that many people. And we didn’t get enough funding for that many robots. It’s a really good problem to have, but that’s just been amazing watching these girls, or young women. We use Littlebits so they learn about — an accessible way to learn about circuitry and they’ve built their own robots. We did sewable circuits, so like LEDs into clothing. ANd we did NXT robots. All those things. The transformation we’ve seen in them with this program is phenomenal. Next year, we need to expand to four more schools. That is just amazing. So, we need more mentors. We need more funding, but it’s incredible.
PAIGE: Those are great problems to have. That’s awesome. Are you open sourcing your curriculum?
ANDREA: That’s up for debate right now. Mainly because of the fact that we’re having trouble funding these projects. I personally want everything to be open source, more or less, but it also could be potentially an opportunity for us to sale the curriculum and get the funding that we need in order to continue, so we desperately need the funding.
PAIGE: Sure. So, if people are interested in supporting you, how would they do that?
ANDREA: Well, we have, our web address is creatorgirls.com. And so, you can go to that website and send and email and also see some pictures of what we’ve been up to. You can also certainly email me, Andreafrost@hotmail.com.
PAIGE: And we’ll have links to all that in the show notes. That’s how we do things.
ANDREA: Cool. Yeah, that program has just been tremendous. We have a huge partnership with Western. With the Association for Women in Computing. We have, I think, probably eight to 10 of the mentors right now. So, probably half the mentors are from Western. Sydney Cool is the main woman behind all of that. Though, she, I think, in general tends to stay in the background a little bit. But she’s amazing. I mean, there’s a long list of people that got together to make it happen, but now it will be up to the support of the community in order for that to continue.
PAIGE: And that’s a hard, hard hurdle to overcome, but it’s totally something we can do together. And that’s — one of my passions right now is, there are a lot of women’s organizations and we’re duplicating a lot of work, because everybody is seeing this problem and really, I think, a lot of us are stepping up to say let’s fix it.
ANGELA: To be an advocate.
PAIGE: Yeah, and I would love to just see all of us kind of come together and work together.
ANDREA: Yeah.
PAIGE: And use contacts and stuff like that.
ANGELA: Share funding.
PAIGE: Yeah.
ANDREA: It’s so interesting to see the transformation. The first days the girls were so timid. They were very scared to actually touch anything. Now, they all want to be engineers and they’re super gung ho.
PAIGE: That’s awesome.
ANDREA: So that’s also where the Walk from Robotics expo came in, because we were like, when they’re done with middle school where are they going to go next. Most people just don’t know what are the options. So, it’s a good follow up to this pilot program for Creators and Innovators to then have a Walk from Robotics expo to help guide, not only that group, but the whole community in terms of if you want to learn about robotics where can you go to do that.
PAIGE: Do any of the high school up here have robot teams, like for robot fights or anything like that?
ANDREA: Yeah, the Sehome Seamonsters. They’re the first robotics team. I think they just went to the world championship.
PAIGE: What?
ANGELA: Wow.
ANDREA: Yeah, it’s amazing. They have an incredible robotics lab that I’m very jealous of.
PAIGE: I mean, you know, you just graduated your first cohort, but are there any existing girls on the high school team?
ANDREA: One girl.
PAIGE: One girl.
ANDREA: Her name is Ky, she’s amazing. She’s also a volunteer with Creators and Innovators, specifically because she’s the only girl. She’s okay with it. There are a lot of women who are totally cool being the only girl in the group, but there’s something very special that happens when women come together and support one another. Now we have 60 girls who want to go on.
PAIGE: That is so cool.
ANGELA: And your website is creative girls?
ANDREA: Creatorgirls.com.
PAIGE: That’s awesome. So, you’re kind of on the tail end of this. How has getting your master’s been? You went and said, I”m not going to have a traditional career path. You jumped out of planes to fight fire, you did all these crazy things, and then you’ve kind of come back around to education. How has it been being a woman in this more traditional path on the other end?
ANDREA: I am not going to lie. It has not always been very fun. There have been a lot of challenges and a lot of really incredible moments along the way. Going to that Grace Hopper conference was a really huge turning point for me, because I no longer questioned whether or not I belonged there. I was in the presence of 5,000 women. All female technologist from all over the world solving problems in incredible ways, and having fun while doing it, and building community with one another. If I hadn’t gone to that conference I would have only ever been exposed to my university, my class. I would not have realized how much potential there was. Now that I’ve seen that, it’s not even just what you see. It’s what you yourself can create in the future. Now I very much know that i belong here and have a place here, and I’m super excited to be able to spread that passion to other people. I think more people should be involved in technology. There’s tons of jobs. Tons of money. It’s intellectually extremely stimulating. There’s so many benefits to it.
PAIGE: You can change the world.
ANDREA: Yeah, you can change the world.
PAIGE: You can type things and change the world.
ANDREA: Yeah.
PAIGE: That blows my mind every day. You’re like the eight person I”ve talked to just today who says, I got into this but then the real pivot point, the real thing that I’ve needed, or the real thing that I’m excited about is community. Even the guys here, part of being at Linux Fest Northwest is that we come together and we’re all giant geeks together. And I love that. I have to say, there are a lot of women on the floor today.
ANGELA: There have been quite a bit and we have been catching them to get littles bits. It is awesome. I’ve been coming here, well over the last eight years at least six times, and there’s a lot more women here.
PAIGE: Yeah, everybody is saying that. There’s young girls. There’s dads with daughters. It’s changing and I’m excited to be a part of that.
ANDREA: Yeah, me too.
PAIGE: Our traditional last question is what are you most excited about about technology right now.
ANDREA: Well, I don’t know I mentioned earlier, I”m opening a code school. I’m a cofounder for codelily.education. There seems to be a lack of accessible education, so I’m really, really excited about being able to provide that for our community. Recently we taught classes in intro to HTML and JavaScript. I thought that the students who came would be reflective of the student body I see in my classes in college, so mostly guys and couple girls. When we promoted the classes in an open, collaborative, accessible environment, we had 100 percent women.
PAIGE: Whoa.
ANGELA: Wow.
ANDREA: Anywhere from 16 years old to 60 years old.
PAIGE: And that wasn’t your target?
ANDREA: No.
PAIGE: Whoa.
ANDREA: I mean, we just put it out there to a few people. We didn’t even really advertise it that much. People are interested in learning, but they want to learn in a more collaborative space where it’s not super competitive and intense with grades and all those things. So, we’re able to provide an alternative route. The first class was 100 percent women. THe second class did have a couple guys. It was really an unexpected thing that happened there. So, I think the more we can move in the direction of building community and collaboration, all those things, we will see more diversity in computing. I’m most excited about being involved in that project, because it’s also very fun to be an entrepreneur and I work with an amazing group of people. I just feel really blessed for all of the opportunities in my life.

Math Hurts

  • Mathematics anxiety can prompt a response in the brain similar to when a person experiences physical pain, according to new research
  • The low down
  • Using brain scans, scholars determined that the brain areas active when highly math-anxious people prepare to do math overlap with the same brain areas that register the threat of bodily harm
  • Anticipation of doing math prompts a similar brain reaction as when they experience pain
  • Significance
  • Researchers found it was the anticipation of having to do math, and not actually doing math itself, that looked like pain in the brain.
  • Brain activation does not happen during math performance, suggesting that it is not the math itself that hurts it is the anticipation of math is painful
  • Scholars worked with 14 adults who were shown to have math anxiety based on their responses to a series of questions about math
  • Additional tests showed that these individuals were not overly anxious in general; instead, their heightened sense of anxiety was specific to math-related situations.
  • Volunteers were tested in an fMRI machine, which allowed researchers to examine brain activity as they did math, they were given mathematical equations to verify like the validity of the following equation: (12 x 4) – 19 = 29
  • Subjects were also shown short word puzzles. For these puzzles, people saw a series of letters (for example: yrestym) and had to determine if reversing the order of the letters produced a correctly spelled English word.
  • fMRI scans showed that the anticipation of math caused a response in the brain similar to physical pain
  • The higher a person’s anxiety about math, the more anticipating math activated the posterior insula—a fold of tissue located deep inside the brain just above the ear that is associated with registering direct threats to the body as well as the experience of pain.
  • Math anxiety levels were not associated with brain activity in the insula or in any other neural region when volunteers were doing math.
  • For those with math anxiety, a painful sense of dread may begin long before a person sits down to take a math test.
  • Of Note
  • current work is also consistent with other research which showed that the mere anticipation of doing mathematics changes functioning in the brains of people with high levels of math anxiety
  • Mathematics anxiety can begin as early as first grade
  • The value of seeing math anxiety not just as a proxy for poor math ability, but as an indication there can be a real, negative psychological reaction to the prospect of doing math.
  • The reaction needs to be addressed like any other phobia rather than simply piling on math homework for students who are anxious about math, students need active help to become more comfortable with the subject
  • For instance, that writing about math anxieties before a test can reduce one’s worries and lead to better performance.

Kinect in Science

  • Researchers in Scotland have devised a means of using a Microsoft Kinect sensing system to allow for hand control of holographic optical tweezers
  • The low down
  • Laser tweezers are laser based devices that allow for manipulation of very small objects; typically at the cellular level
  • A laser beam is projected towards a target, but before reaching it, is split into three separate beams
  • The three beams are broadcast onto the edges of the object to be manipulated and as the beams are moved the object is caused to move in lockstep
  • However fine tuning control of the laser to cause the movement of an object has been less than ideal and researchers to continue looking for alternative means
  • Significance
  • In this new research, the team connected a Microsoft Kinect device to the tweezers and then demonstrated an ability to move microscopic sized objects by moving their hands around in the air.
  • Connecting a Kinect device to their virtual tweezers, the researchers found that they were able to define the space in which they wished to work by using simple hand movements and then to connect, virtually to a particular tiny object
  • The Kinect is not precise enough to capture subtle movements however as it doesn’t allow for force-feedback, or the ability to feel the resistance of an object as its being moved
  • Of Note
  • HoloHands, is not sophisticated enough to allow for serious research work but it is being used as a tool for educational purposes, either as a tool, or implemented as a learning game.

Space-X’s Grasshopper

  • The low down
  • SpaceX is developing the “Grasshopper” reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing rocket
  • In September, the 32-meter- (106-ft-) tall Grasshopper made a tiny hop – barely lifting off the pad just to test-fire its engines
  • The Grasshopper has now made a second, bigger hop
  • Phase 1 and 2
  • Reportedly the goal with Grasshopper is to eventually create a reusable first stage for its Falcon 9 rocket that would be able to land safely instead of falling back into the ocean and not being usable again
  • The Grasshopper test program is to have three phases of test launches at SpaceX’s facility in McGregor, Texas
  • Both Phase 1 and 2 flights would last up to 45 seconds.
  • Phase 1 rocket would rise to not more than 240 feet [73 meters]
  • Phase 2 rocket would rise to not more than 670 feet [204 meters]
  • Both Phase 1 and 2 flights would last up to 45 seconds.
  • Phase 3
  • Phase 3 tests have the goal of increasingly higher altitudes with higher ascent speeds and descent speeds altitude test sequence likely would be 1,200 feet [366 meters]; 2,500 feet [762 meters]; 5,000 feet [1,524 meters]; 7,500 feet [2,286 meters]; and 11,500 feet [3,505 meters]
  • The maximum test duration of Phase 3 firings would be approximately 160 seconds. If all goes well the Grasshopper would land back on the launch pad

Fermi

  • Astronomers using data from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope were able to look at distant blazars to help measure the background light from all the stars that are shining now and ever
  • Last time on SciByte
  • Breast Cancer & Mayan Calender | SciByte 69 (October 30, 2012
  • The low down
  • This enabled the most accurate measurement of starlight throughout the universe, which in turn helps establish limits on the total number of stars that have ever shone.
  • The optical and ultraviolet light from stars continues to travel throughout the universe even after the stars cease to shine
  • Fossil radiation field we can explore using gamma rays from distant sources and also provide a stellar density in the cosmos of about 1.4 stars per 100 billion cubic light-years, which means the average distance between stars in the universe is about 4,150 light-years
  • Significance
  • Blazars, which are among the most energetic phenomena in the universe. They are galaxies powered by extremely energetic black holes:
  • To gamma rays, the EBL functions as a kind of cosmic fog, but Fermi measured the amount of gamma-ray absorption in blazar spectra
  • Gamma rays produced in blazar jets travel across billions of light-years to Earth
  • Occasionally, a gamma ray collides with starlight and transforms into an electron and its antimatter counterpart, a positron
  • Once this occurs, the gamma ray light is lost much the same way as fog dims a distant lighthouse.
  • From studies of nearby blazars, scientists have determined how many gamma rays should be emitted at different energies
  • Which gives an upper and lower limit on the amount of stars that have formed
  • Previous estimates have only been an upper limit, this data shows that the upper and lower limits are very close to each other
  • Of Note
  • Measuring the extragalactic background light was one of the primary mission goals for Fermi
  • While Fermi is providing us with a shadow image of the first stars, whereas Webb will directly detect them

  • A Martian day, called a sol, is about 40 minutes longer than an Earth day, so the team’s start time for daily planning has been moving a few hours later each week
  • Telecommuting Teams Start
  • In addition more than 200 non-JPL scientists who have spent some time working at JPL since Curiosity’s landing will now continue participating regularly from their home institutions throughout North America and Europe
  • The team has been preparing in recent weeks to use dispersed participation teleconferences and Web connections.
  • X-Ray Analysis
  • Results of the first analysis of Martian soil by the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) experiment on NASA’s Curiosity rover show the presence of crystalline feldspar, pyroxenes and olivine mixed with some amorphous (non-crystalline) material
  • This makes is similar to volcanic soils in Hawaii
  • NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has completed initial experiments showing the mineralogy of Martian soil is similar to weathered basaltic soils of volcanic origin in Hawaii
  • The teams used its Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument (CheMin) for quantitative results and new identifications of the minerals in this first X-ray diffraction analysis on Mars
  • Identification of minerals in rocks and soil is crucial for the mission’s goal to assess past environmental conditions and the mineral records the conditions under which it formed.
  • The composition of a rock provides only ambiguous mineralogical information, minerals diamond and graphite, which have the same chemical composition, but strikingly different structures and properties
  • CheMin uses X-ray diffraction, which provides more accurate identifications of minerals than any method previously used on Mars it reads minerals’ internal structure by recording how their crystals distinctively interact with X-rays
  • The sample was processed through a sieve to exclude particles larger than 0.006 inch (150 micrometers), roughly the width of a human hair.
  • The soil material CheMin has analyzed is more representative of modern processes on Mars
  • So far materials Curiosity has analyzed are consistent with our initial ideas of the deposits in Gale Crater recording a transition through time from a wet to dry environment

SCIENCE CALENDAR

Looking back

  • Nov 09, 1965 | 47 years ago | Blackout | The biggest electricity grid failure in U.S. history at the time caused a 13-hour blackout in northeast America and parts of Canada. The power lines from Niagara Falls to New York City were operating near their maximum capacity. At about 5:15 pm, a transmission line relay failed. Now there was insufficient line capacity for New York City. New England and New York are interconnected on a power grid, and the power that had been flowing toward New York City had to go elsewhere, instantly. Unable to handle this overload, generator operators shutdown to protect their equipment. Almost the entire grid failed, affecting 80,000 square miles, and 25 million people. In the subways of New York, 800,000 people were trapped

Looking up this week

Solar and Lunar Eclipses

  • Solar Eclipse
  • On Nov. 13, residents of northeastern Australia will get a ‘false-start’ sunrise
  • About an hour after the sun breaks the horizon in the coastal city of Cairns, it will be fully obscured by the moon, whose shadow will darken the sky and bring the stars back into view for 2 minutes there
  • The solar corona should take on a ‘wound up’ circular shape, with a high potential for tongues of pink nuclear fire leaping from the Sun’s edge
  • A three-man crew will be capturing and broadcasting the solar eclipse live with a telescope in northern Australia, which will be the only land area that will witness the total eclipse
  • Parts of New Zealand and Chile will see the sun partially obscured as the moon crosses the sky
  • Lunar Eclipse
  • A lunar eclipse that will take place on Nov. 28.
  • The penumbral lunar eclipse will manifest as a slight but noticeable darkening of the northern half of the moon; the dimming should be easily visible to the naked eye after most of the moon has dipped into the Earth’s penumbra
  • The Eastern United States will miss out on the lunar eclipse, as the moon will already have set there when the eclipse begins
  • The rest of the country can watch at least part of it, with the duration of visibility longest for people on the West Coast and in Alaska
  • Use THIS NASA GRAPHIC to check if you’ll be able to watch the lunar eclipse from their backyard.

MATH

Engines!

Standard engine variants come in three flavors:
Impulse — A standard engine, baseline
Hyper Impulse — Efficient at high energy (meaning when you are above about 60 engine power, you start gaining extra engine energy)
Combat Impulse — Efficient at low energy (meaning when you are below about 40 engine power, you start gaining extra engine energy)

Impulse engines — the baseline variety — should not be used.  They seem to have the exact same stat scaling as the other two types, but never grant additional energy.

So your choice should be based on what you typically fly with your Engine energy set at.  If it’s low, go Combat, and if it’s high go Hyper.

Exception = Efficient Impulse Engine
Can obtain from episodic content in the Lt Commander range (Past Imperfect), and it adds 5 energy to weapons, shields and aux.  So awesome!  And totally viable all the way to VA.  Even if you’re ship’s a little slower, the extra energy is tasty.  And speed rarely impacts PvE tactics.

As you go up in Marks of engines, the only thing that changes is the speed and sometimes turning rates. So if you have a lower Mk engine with a fatty bonus that you adore (like the aforementioned Efficient engine), and don’t mind the reduced maneuverability, don’t feel like you have to give it up.  The choice is yours.

Engine modifiers come in 3 standard variants as well:
[full] — increases your Full Impulse speed
[spd] — increases your standard flight speed
[turn] — slightly buffs your turn rate

Speed VERY rarely matters in PvE combat.  I know there are times in PvP where running away is a good tactic, and if that’s one of yours then by all means go for [spd] — especially since this modifier can be further multiplied by buffs such as Evasive Maneuvers.  For most folks however, I think I’d be safe to recommend an engine with Turn Rate bonuses.  Even if you’re in a highly maneuverable ship, like an Escort or something, a higher turn rate is always good.  Also, if the numbers are right on the tooltips, engines with turn rate improvements have a more profound impact on your turning, than an RCS engineering console would.

Now, let’s talk about an Engine-based tactic that is primarily used in PvP.

It’s a common buff-stacking approach that is sometimes called “Ludicrous Speed” … because it is crazy-fast.

To execute this maneuver fire off RAW SPEED BOOSTS first, then follow that up with PERCENTAGE-BASED BOOSTS.

Raw speed/energy boosts:
Aux to *** (use EngTeam + Aux to Engines)
Engine Battery
Energy Siphon

Percentage boosts:
Attack Pattern Omega
Evasive Maneuvers

As an added bonus to this tactic, there’s a new consumable item known as a “Deuterium Surplus” that can be obtained by completing a daily mission in the Alhena system in Eta Eridani. These are pretty much Evasive Maneuvers batteries.

COMING SOON:
November Engineering Report on Monday 11/15

MATH:

Today we will once more confront the Silicon Avatar itself.  Friend of Lore, and foe of all other life – the sinister snowflake, the carbon crusher, the devouring diamond – Crystalline Entity.

I will not be discussing tactics. Except in specific cases where your equipment and abilities are dictated by them. Because THAT is what I will be covering – how to equip your ship, and which boffs to bring to the fight.

CRYSTALLINE ABILITIES:

1) RATE OF REGENERATION
At VA, it has 2.5million hitpoints and regenerates 1% hitpoints per second.
In order to overcome this, you will need a total of 25,000 sustained DPS, AFTER factoring in the Entity’s significant damage resistance.

2) SHARD SPAWNING
Fragments (no size indicator) deal damage directly to your hull.  Shields are irrelevant.
Large Fragments will busticate into 3 Small Fragments upon impact with ANYTHING. (phase 3 only)
Small Fragments will rush back to daddy and heal him for 1% of his hitpoints EACH.
** This means that a single collision with a Large Fragment can heal the entity for more than 75,000 damage.

RE-EQUIP

1)  NO KINETICS

This isn’t 100% confirmed, but common knowledge indicates that kinetic weaponry of any type appears to cause the spawning of additional shards.  So don’t use ‘em.

This is especially important in the case of MINES, HY Plasma and TRICOBALTS because they can and WILL be targeted by Large Fragments in Phase 3, causing widespread panic and pandemonium in the form of a swarm of Small Fragments that will pop the Entity’s hitpoints back to max in no time flat.

2)  ENERGY TYPES

Bad = Phasers, Polarons and Tetryons
The CE has no subsystems and no shields.  So the aforementioned energy types will render no benefit beyond their base damage.

Good = Disruptors and Plasma
The distruptor debuff will make the CE take additional damage from EVERYONE firing upon it.
Plasma will burn the sucker. Nuff said.

Neutral = Antiproton
No additional benefits, but usually have really nice innate bonuses.  Plus they’re pretty.

3)  BOFF ABILITY SELECTION

TACTICAL =
Nothing that relies upon torps or mines (see note about Kinetics).
No subsystem targeting.
Best to use buffs that increase DPS of you and your teammates.
Beam Overload, Tactical Team and Attack Patterns are your best bet

ENGINEERS =
No boarding parties!  They can be targeted by fragments just like mines and such.
Shield heals will only be useful in Phase 1 so might not be best to bring along.
Focus on hull heals, and dps increases.
Eject Warp Plasma could come in handy if you are planning to kite fragments, but beware that if it manages to destroy a Fragment it may result in healing the Entity.

SCIENCE =
Nothing that deals AOE and/or Kinetic damage. This includes: Tyken’s Rift, Gravity Well, Repulsor Beams, Photonic Shockwave.
Charged Particle Burst only deals shield damage = worthless.
Shield Heals again are only useful in Phase 1, so concentrate on Hull heals.
Energy Siphon will not effect the Entity, but will result in a slight boost to your energy levels resulting in an increase in DPS output.
Scramble Sensors occasionally confuses fragments into not following nearby targets.  It is unreliable however the 360-degree targetting arc allows you to fire it while circling the Entity.

CAPTAIN ABILITIES:
Science captains MUST spam the Sensor Scan button. The DPS increase an absolute necessity.
Tac captains MUST keep Fire on my Mark active on the CE at all times.
ALL Captains WILL NOT use the following abilities:
– Ramming Speed
– Self Destruct
– Photonic Fleet and/or Fleet Support
Reasons: Each of these run an extremely high risk of colliding with Large Fragments which will heal the entity, as mentioned previously.

SUMMARY:

Escorts and Cruisers far outstrip the capabilities of Science Vessels for this encounter, due to the limited number of science boff abilities that are actually beneficial against the Entity, and the lower overall DPS of Science Ships.

It’s IMPERATIVE that you DO NOT DIE.  Every time you die, that big bad hunk of shiny benefits.  It’s not just a matter of pride – he will heal himself and the rest of the team will lose out on your DPS.

Until we figure out a way to hook up Klingon Opera to our Deflector Dish to bust out a harmonic resonance, the best advice I can offer you all is to read, understand, and share your knowledge.  There is no single encounter in STO that is more misunderstood or incorrectly referenced, than the fight against the Crystalline Entity.  It is up to each of us to learn its tricks, and tell others how to learn them as well.  Because knowing… is half the battle.

    * I’ve never before seen or heard of a game developer buying the works of a fan.  New trend?  Bad idea?

Black Market Exchange launches (out of game item auctions)    https://blackmarketexchange.blogspot.com/
    * Only going to work if many people participate.  It looks sparse now, but if everyone that sees this sticks around, it could turn into a great community tool.  Give it a chance!

        * Sets a poor precedent.  This has a tangible impact on game play (Phaser Lance, Cloak) and can be purchased via RL cash.

        * Still no word on a Klingon equivalent.

        * It was nice of them to release this information before too many people bought extra copies via Steam (big sale going on right now).
        * They are giving a $50 C-Store credit to anyone that received this before 6/24, as they assume this was all people buying multiple copies of the game.
❗ — Not a good distinction.  You can’t use a date to determine purchases, how about checking CC# on the accounts instead?
        * Interesting to note:  Only 50 people have earned a Galaxy-X via referrals, despite the forums erupting in rage from every angle.

Fun bug — KDF occasionally log in and find themselves at Earth!

MATH:

Spacial Anomaly?  Emitters?  Deflectors?  Deflector FIELD?  Deflector DISH?

The amount of strange terminology is enough to give even the most math-brained players a headache.  But I’m here to try and clarify the situation for you, and help YOU get the most out of your Deflector Dish equipment slot.

Selecting the right dish is a 3 step process:

STEP 1) EXAMINE YOUR SKILLS

It might be best to have something to write on, for this step.  It’s worth noting up front that Deflector Dish boosts ONLY affect Science abilities.  What you need to do is go through each of your Science Bridge Officer skills, and take note of whatever skills have an effect on those abilities.  You have two methods to do this —
    * Use your skill selection drop down, and it will highlight which skills affect which abilities.
    * Use your ability selection screen, and take note of whatever is listed on the info pane.
        — I’d recommend this second approach, as scrolling through your drop-down is tedious.

At this step, it may become apparent that you’ve spread yourself too thin, and you’ll want to retrain your boff abilities.  I did when making THIS segment, so I know it can happen!

STEP 2) CHOOSE 3-4 DEFLECTOR SKILLS TO BOOST

Here’s my example list of my science boff abilities:
Scramble Sensors: Sen, SenP
Viral Matrix: Sen, SenP
Jam Sensors: Sen, SenA
Gravity Well: Def, Spa
Tyken’s Rift: Def, Spa
Science Team: Def, DefF
Tachyon Beam: Def, DefD

Based on this list, I’ve decided that it makes the most sense to boost the following skills:  Def, Sen, SenP, Spa (in that order of importance)

STEP 3) FIND YOUR DISH!

Deflectors come in an array of types, each with uniform stat boosts, as follows:

Deflector Array
Sensors
Deflectors
Emitters

Tachyon Deflector Array
Sensors
Sensor Array

Graviton Deflector Array
Deflectors
Deflector Dish

Positronic Deflector Array
Emitters
Tractor Beam

Based on this info, it looks like my best choice is going to be a Deflector Dish.  That will boost two of my skills:  Def, Sen

Now I’d like to find out if I can obtain a dish that also includes boosts to my other top skills.  Using the following list, you can search the exchange for the suffix that will benefit your skills the most.

ast = Astrometrics
def = Deflectors
defD = Deflector Dish
defF = Deflector Field
em = Emitters
hs = Hazard Systems
sen = Sensors
senA = Sensor Array
senP = Sensor Probes
spa = Spacial Anomalies
st = Photonic Theory
tb = Tractor Beams

In my particular case, I know that I’m looking for the following item:  “Deflector Array Mk X [Spa] [SenP]

A quick trip the Exchange, and BOOM… wait, whu?  Aww bummer, must’ve chosen a rare combo.  Maybe you’ll have better luck?  Make sure to try your search with the stat boosts in different orders.  Just in case.

If you can’t find the precise Dish you need on the Exchange, make sure to check vendors for other options.
MAIL:

New question:
“Star Trek is about more than just the Captain — the crew matters too. But right now in STO, they are little more than equipment. Send us your ideas to flesh them out into more iconic Star Trek characters.”

Chris’ Response:

I had much higher hopes for the BOs. I wrote them into my story line and really had a lot of thought into their background..
But after I played the game I realized they were useless, so I never finalized the background story

Jeremy’s Response:
Re-implementing the voice pack options that were introduced in late Beta would be a nice first step in giving our boffs a personality.  To be able to customize their vocal reactions to things we do as their Captain would go a long way towards making them feel less like loot, and more like people.

MATH:

Ground weapon types / pros & cons

MELEE — BARE HANDS vs BAT’LETH

    * Bat’leth will win every time.  Much higher damage, better combos.

    * There’s more to it than that, but that’s a Math segment unto itself.

Damage Type Review

    * Phaser – Chance to Stun.  (good vs. all enemies)

    * Disruptor – Chance to apply damage resistance debuff, enhancing all incoming damage on target.  (great vs. all enemies)

    * Plasma – Chance to apply small DoT that is not mitigated by shields, stacks.  Can be cured.  (good vs. shielded enemies)

    * Tetryon – Chance to apply a debuff to enemy’s shields, enhancing shield damage dealt to target.  (good vs. shielded enemies, bad vs. all else)

    * Polaron – Chance to apply weapon malfunction. (good vs. enemies with ranged weapons, bad vs. all else)

    * Anti-Proton – Various, depends on style purchased, no innate bonus just better stats.

Weapon Types, sorted by Refresh (lowest to highest)

* Stun Beam: Single Target, Expose + Hold

    – Ideal = CONTROLLER.  2x Stun Beams = Hold/Expose every ~3sec

* Compression Bolt:  Single Target, Exploit + minor KB

    – Ideal = BOSS or SECONDARY WEAPON.  Fast refresh (~7sec) allows for many Exploits, highest DPS over time.  Also interrupts.

* Bolt Spray:  Cone AOE, Expose

    – Ideal = EXPOSER.  Can expose up to 5 targets every ~9sec. (Every ~5sec if two equipped)

* Wide Beam Pistol:  Cone AOE, Expose

    – Ideal = TANK.  High damage and easy to spread out – gains threat from large # of targets quickly.

* Sniper Shot:  Single Target, Exploit + KB

    – Ideal = BOSS.  Highest single-target damage per shot.

* High Density Beam:  Cylinder AOE, Expose + Repel

        – Ideal = ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS.  Repel is guaranteed, push targets into hazards.

* Full Auto Sweep:  Wide Cone AOE, Expose

    – Ideal = EXPOSER.  vs Bolt Spray = Higher damage, fewer targets, slower recharge. (not recommended)

* Split Beam:  15-degree Cone AOE, Exploit

    – Ideal = DPS/TANK.  Among the highest potential damage per use, but low over time.  Compromise between Auto-Target and Sniper.

* Arc Wave:  Cylinder AOE, Expose

   – Ideal = ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS.  High knockback potential, throw targets into hazards.  Can also interrupt skills/attacks.  Unlimited # targets.

* Pulse Wave:  Cylinder AOE, Exploit

   – Ideal = CHOKE POINTS.  Highest single-use damage potential plus high knockback potential, but very slow recharge (~14sec)

* Auto-Target Beam:  30-degree Cone AOE, Exploit

    – Ideal = DPS/TANK.  Wide beam, decent damage.  Good for spreading out damage. (not recommended – recharge too slow)

* Energy Blast:  Targeted AOE, Expose + KB

   – Ideal = CHOKE POINTS.  Unlimited # targets + knockback potential (but KB cannot be aimed – radiates outward from impact)

Away Team Recommendations:

* NEEDLES OF DEATH = Three with Bolt Spray, Non-Healer+Captain with Compression Bolt.

REASON = Many exposes, quick refresh on Exploits.

ALT = Rotate in Split Beam for Captain, to allow occasional multi-Exploit shots.

* ALPHA STRIKE = Two Energy Blast, One Full Auto Sweep, One+Captain with Split-Beam.

REASON = E-Blasts and Auto should Expose almost full group (if tightly packed), Split Beams will mow them down.

NOTE:  Best if used by Science Captain that uses Tricorder Scan before engaging, and Away Team that doesn’t summon turrets (wasted Alpha Strike time spent beaming in equipment).  Not ideal for prolonged engagements, as all are on long refresh timers.

Group Recommendations:

* BE PREPARED.  Bring more than your two favorite weapons.  Be ready to fill various roles (Exposer, Knockback, Tank, Boss Killer, etc)

* KNOW YOUR ROLE.  If you are asked to be the dedicated Exposer on a team, don’t equip two E-Blast weapons.

* DON’T SPAM EXPLOITS.  Exploit specials are up to 20x more effective when used on Exposed targets.

MAIL/EDITORIAL:

Next week’s question — give us your suggestions for Ground Combat improvements.

Chris’ suggestion:

1) faster combat

2) fewer badguys, but let me die/fail

3) shield quadrants

4) camera shake option

Jeremy’s suggestion:  Revamp into 3rd person Cover Shooter.  (yes, it’s far-fetched and incredibly unlikely.)

Expanding Universe, Pt 3:  https://www.startrekonline.com/videos

Sneak peaks into the next two STF missions:  “Khitomer Accord” and “Undine Terradome”

– Khitomer Accord is already live, but this video does give away part of the plot that we’ve been keeping hidden…

** If you look closely during the last action sequence of that part of the video, you’ll see Romulan Borg.

– Undine Terradome sounds like a LOT of fun…

** Infiltrate their training facility and find a way to distinguish Federation (or KDF?) hostages, from Undine disguises.

** This mission is not part of the Borg story arc, and doesn’t have any prerequisites.

Death Penalty Details — https://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=152455

– “Normal” Difficulty = NO PENALTY.  No change in overall gameplay as currently set.

https://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2586482#post2586482

– Details for “Injury System”:

    * Low chance of incurring a debuff to various systems/stats per death.  Higher difficulty = higher chance of major injuries.

        — Chance of injury is low enough that they “shouldn’t usually stack past about 2.”  30 minute debuff.

    * Ground = fixed with Regenerators.  Space = fixed with Components. (purchased at Stations, stack up to 20)

    * (Ripoff of Dragon Age’s death penalty!)

Including this because I get asked this question A ZILLION TIMES PER DAY…

Dev Response:  mhighison: Took a look and both the closed and the open TWoK uniforms were set since launch day to be unlocked by anyone who had the key. It doesn’t seem like everyone is getting both variants for some reason, so we are looking into a bug fix now. Cheers,Matt.”

MATH:

This segment, I’ll be covering the pros & cons of each separate type of Cannon.  Even non-Escort captains may find this handy, to understand their cannon-wielding friends AND FOES.

Weapon Type:

There are 3 types of cannons:  Basic, Dual and Dual Heavies.

There is a fourth type of “cannon” that is not Escort-specific:  Turrets.  They benefit from all cannon-related skills and abilities, but can be equipped on any ship. Very high power-drain over time, due to 360 firing arc.

Basic Cannons:

Basic Cannons have a lower overall DPS than the other types of cannons, but benefit from a 180-degree firing arc.  I see these as an alternative to Beam Arrays, if you simply MUST have a wider firing arc than is offered by Dual cannon types. The lower DPS is a noteworthy hit though, so I do not recommend using them. I’ll focus the rest of my notes on DUAL vs. DUAL HEAVY.

Rate of Fire / Energy Drain:

Each of the ‘dual’ type of cannons deal the same dps (damage per second) but Heavies deal the damage in 2 bursts (vs. Dual’s 4 bursts), and draw slightly more energy per volley.  However, you’ll actually end up being able to sustain your rate of fire more easily using DHC in lieu of Dual cannons, due to the slower rate of fire — less up-time, more regen time.  DHC fires for 1 sec and recharges for 2, requiring that you only regenerate 6 energy per second between shots.  DC fires for 1 sec and recharges for 1, requiring you to regenerate 10 energy to stay topped off.

Firing Arc Utilization:

The bursty approach of the DHC allows you to potentially output closer to your ENTIRE damage potential while your enemy is maneuvering in & out of your firing arcs.  If an agile enemy ship only dips into your target zone long enough for you to fire one projectile, the DHC burst will deal much more damage than a DC in that single burst.  On the other hand, a MISS with a Heavy cannon is a much larger dip in your overall damage, than a miss with a normal Dual.

Critical Striking:

According to popular theory, critical hits are where Dual Cannons really shine, in the long run.  By firing twice as frequently, folks say that they end up doing more damage over time based on your chance of critical strikes.  Whereas the slower, heavier hits from a DHC give you fewer opportunities to crit your enemy.  By extending this logic, skills and abilities that increase your chance to crit, and your severity of crits, will skew your overall character profile slightly in favor of Duals over DHCs.  However, keep in mind that DHCs come with a built-in boost to Crit Severity, which may be enough to even the odds.

Increased Damage %:

Abilities like Tactical Team and Attack Pattern Omega have flat % increases to damage, which suggest that they can be better utilized by DHC volleys.  Fewer shots, bigger hits.  It’s not a huge favor toward DHCs.

Rapid Fire:

Now, what about Rapid Fire?  First of all, it causes you to fire twice as many bullets from a Dual Cannon (8 vs 4), but only 1.5 as many from a DHC (3 vs 2).  That seems to skew the math heavily in favor of Dual Cannons.  But because it also reduces the cooldown on your cannons, the math actually works out to be about even.  The real determining factor here, if you’re very fond of Rapid Fire, is your energy drain.  See my earlier notes re: Drain.

Weapon Special Abilities:

This is another area where Duals outshine their heavy compatriots.  The bottom line is this:  More shots = more chances to proc the special ability.  So higher rate of fire = more procs.  Simple, yes?

In Conclusion:

I personally encourage the use of Dual Cannons, but the difference in the raw numbers is miniscule, if present at all.  Most of the argument in favor of either will send you running to Duals, but if you just like BIG NUMBERS, you won’t be handicapping yourself by using a set of heavy-hitting Dual Heavies.

MAIL:

Responses to PvP idea request…

Boils down to two things:

1) Player-controlled “nodes” (systems or stations)

2) Rewards for large-scale PvP involvement, instead of just for single matches. (buffs, currency tokens, unlocked areas/missions)

The idea of a Neutral Zone sector block is repeatedly mentioned.  Players seem to want to have large-scale territorial conflict with other players.

A lot of players have good ideas to incorporate both Fleet-based controls (encouraging large social gatherings), and a cross-implementation with crafting as well in the form of creating stations and their associated defenses.  I can’t say that I’m personally fond of either of these ideas, as they really penalize the casual players, forcing them to be part of massive fleets in order to progress.  There’s a place for that, but I don’t feel that PvP is that place.  But, you wrote about it, so we brought it up!

Another common idea is that matches would be held on schedules (hourly?  bi-hourly?  etc) so that people know when to participate. (helps to encourage participation – nobody wants to sit on an empty map)  Or at the very least have timers between capturing each node, that are readily visible.

The concept of “open PvP” is also raised repeatedly – being able to challenge opponents from Sector Space, and be thrown into a DSE-type instance to duke it out.  Very open to exploits and griefing though, until an email we received from Barry Neville floated the idea about a PvP flag, that includes a 1-minute timer.  His idea also includes that the ‘loser’ of any PvP match gets auto de-flagged and cannot be challenged, or challenge back, until their 1-minute timer resets.  This is a great way to prevent griefing.  But I’d still be worried about the balance of open challenges… what’s to stop a RA5 from challenging a LtComm to a deathmatch in this system?  Unless sectors become level-banded, which further ruins the social atmosphere…

Full props to Darren_Kitlor for this concept:  https://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=150499

MATH:

Tribble Breeding!
aka, “How to Rule the Universe with Furry Minions”

INTRO:

Tribbles are actually USEFUL! Equipping certain breeds of tribbles in your ground-device slot, and clicking them, will bestow buffs upon your Captain and his/her Bridge Crew.

* A quick instant heal
* A damage boost
* A resistance boost
* Or a regeneration buff

And some of these buffs, with the right RARE breed of Tribble, can be stacked up to 3-times their base strength, or combinations of multiple types of buff (e.g., damage boost + resistance)

The process is time-consuming and a total money-sink (tribbles sell to NPCs for zero credits). But it’s still fun!

OVERVIEW:

Breeding tribbles can be expressed in a simple mathematical equation: Tribble + Food + Time = New Tribble

“Tribble” = The original tribble can be ANY tribble in the game, even the unique ones (Best Buy Tribble & Tribble of Borg). Breeding a unique tribble will NOT result in additional unique types — they will breed into tribbles that can be obtained thru normal breeding.

“Time” = roughly hourly increments, but not thoroughly defined or set in stone. Just be patient.

“Food” = ANY food. Various foods have different effects, but generally speaking ANY food will result in a new tribble.

Some quick tips:
* Right Click on their icon and choose “Info” to see a complete list of their abilities, breed, and more.
* Tribbles held in your ground-device slot seem to only breed while you are on the ground.
* To STOP a tribble from breeding, simply be sure to sell or destroy any food items you may loot.
* Your bridge officers can (and WILL) use tribbles, if equipped in their device slots.

BREEDS:

Every sub-species of Tribble has a defined breed. These are named after the Devs of Star Trek online, and include Rivera, Zinc, Stahl, Griffis, and dozens more. Each of these breeds will always have the same stats, within their breed.

The breed names are listed on their info, or you can also check one of the many geniusly-designed breeding charts around the web, and match them up by color. (e.g., https://www.wolfiesden.com/games/sto/tribblebreeding.asp

“Solid color” tribbles can be pet for a small heal. More specifically, the Dotson, Stahl and Sparkes breeds. These 3 breeds are what you usually find as loot.

If you feed these breeds ANY food (yes this time it really is ANY), you have a chance of receiving a Susilo, Vitales, or Thompson.

These new and improved breeds will breed into the genetic precursor to all further breeds — the TUFFLI breed. All you have to do is combine them with any food that gives a +64% hitpoint boost.

FOODS:

Once you have your Tuffli Tribble in-hand, you’re well on your way to selective breeding of better tribbles.

* From Tuffli and up, all breeds interact in a unique manner with each individual food item in the game.
* Generally speaking, the higher the food buffs your hitpoints, the higher chance of receiving a higher-quality tribble.
* To control your breeding, only ever have ONE tribble on your body at a time – including device slots of yourself and your boffs. Put the rest in the bank (WITHOUT FOOD)
* Many foods that are considered ‘rare’ can actually be purchased at DS9, so check those vendors before spending your credits on the Exchange.

WRAP-UP:

Sorry for the lower video quality than normal – we shot and captured all of this footage using WeGame as an experiment when our other capture method kept failing.

due to limitations in Xquartz, Multimonitor set ups can be a hassle. The game will want to play only on the left-most monitor, wether its the primary or not.

Ask Cryptic: Let’s Talk Skills https://www.startrekonline.com/node/1158
They talk about Skill Caps, and how they are necessary for future content once the cap is raised to RA 10 (“later this year”)
They will be altering the Ship Pilot skills, so that each tier will again benefit the ship types further up that line.
Their “answer” to the question regarding Weapon Types vs. Skill Point Cost was disappointing. Not really an answer at all. Paraphrased: “They’re different and exotic because we say so.”
Compare to a fantasy MMO:
Daggers = Armor Piercing. Swords = Bleed DOT. Equal but different effects. Now if Swords cost more skill points to attain the same DPS as daggers that are cheaper, why would anyone use swords?
SOLUTION: Higher Tier weapon types need to be more powerful effects, in order to justify the skill point investment. Or, even out the cost. You can’t have equality AND imbalance, at the same time.

MATH:

A Walk-Thru Guide to the Captain Skill Builder

https://sto-builder.binarybit.ch/ — created by Ghley < —- LOWER THIRD TO SHOW LINK
Java, 32-bit ONLY
Easy on-site bug reporting tool
Patch Notes / To-Do List at the bottom of the page

STEP 1) Choose your profession.
This will alter the skill choices available for your “ground” specializations.

STEP 2) Choose your ship.
If you’re trying to set yourself up for end-game, choose an end-game ship for maximum forethought.

STEP 3) Choose your boffs’ abilities.
The drop-down lists provided are NOT all-inclusive. They do not include ‘rare’ Mk III abilities, or those trainable by Captains (more on this topic later).
You will notice that all skills that affect your chosen abilities are now highlighted in a gold color.
NOTE: Several BUGS exist, so not all skills are highlighted correctly… hopefully the creators are working on this!
You may need to come back to this step if you find you’ve spread yourself a bit too thin!

STEP 4) Spend your skill points.
The Builder knows when you have spent enough to rank up. Watch for the next rank to unlock.
The numbers at the top show:
Points Spent This Rank (Points To Next Rank)
Most skills begin giving significantly diminished returns, starting around rank 4 or 5. So it’s not always the best idea to max out unless you NEED every last tidbit of bonus (PvP?)
One bonus of training all 9 ranks in some skills: To teach your boffs powerful Rank III abilities.
You can only teach your boffs abilities that match your Captain’s Profession (so Science captains will potentially have the best Science boffs, e.g.)
This skill builder does not support Rank III taught abilities.
Workaround: You can select a lower-rank ability on the boff dropdown menus, to show which skills will affect these.
Don’t be afraid to buy lower-tier skills, in order to meet the requirements to unlock the next tier up. Sometimes the broader bonuses of low-rank bonuses are better to have in the long run.
DON’T NEGLECT YOUR GROUND SKILLS! Despite this builder only highlighting the SPACE skills that benefit your boffs, remember that you will be fighting on the ground also!
Pick a sub-specialization within your class – don’t try to do everything.
Click the “Space Stats” button near the top to display your character’s skill modifier totals in the right-hand pane.

STEP 5) Share your build.
The URL field at the top of the screen is updated on the fly as you spend your skill points. You can copy & paste this to share your character build.
Recommend using a URL shortener for forum sharing (bit.ly or similar)

Summary/Tips:
For now, Commander and higher ship skills are limited to the ship you are currently flying and do not carry up to the next tier. THIS WILL BE CHANGING.
For more information on your individual skills, you can pull up your Skill Pane in-game (press P) and look at the list of skills from there.

The skill information provided by this skill builder can also be used to help you select your Deflector Dish and Consoles.

TrekMovie.com reviews STO:
In general, gameplay in Star Trek Online is very intuitive.
Tutorial is good, but sometimes leaves you guessing on what to do.
Controls very intuitive.
In space battles, the controls are very different from flight in other games.
The graphics in this game are fantastic!
“Overall, I love this game! It is a chance to be immersed in the Star Trek world”

David “Daeke” Bass Leaving Cryptic
Leaving comes amidst heavy fire from the community on Cryptic’s most recent endeavor, the addition of Vibora Bay in Champions Online.
Daeke took heat as he was the first member of the Cryptic staff to acknowledge that Vibora Bay would be a piece of paid content.
Phoxe will be stepping up as STO community lead. Fourm Post Here: https://forums.startrekonline.com/showpost.php?p=1901489&postcount=3.

“But we’ll have to see how Star Trek does and then secondly we want to do it justice and not hurry something along just to get it on the console.” – Zinc

One Million Already Playing Star Trek Online?
https://terminalgamer.com/2010/02/04/one-million-already-playing-star-trek-online/
One million registered accounts is a strong indicator of a vibrant online community and it should only grow given Star Trek’s massive fan base
Numbers reflect Web accounts, not subscribed game accounts.

MATH:

OMG TORPEDO MATH

Special thanks to Katavul and Aruji, and their team of guinea pigs.

+1 Skill = 1% bonus to base damage.

Anything above Standard Issue damage = Bonus, and is added AFTER the skill math.
Example:
Standard Issue Torpedo = 1383 damage ( < — BASE)
Mk VIII Quantum Torpedo = 2484 damage ( < — per unmodified tooltip)
difference = +1101 ( < — BONUS)

With a +100 skill bonus:
(1383 x 2.00) = 2766
+1101
3867 < — same as in-game tooltip!!

Max skill bonus = 100% (18 Lt, 30 LtC, 52 Comm = 100 total)

This SAME math works for Beams & Cannons, but is also affected by Weapon Energy Levels.

Consoles act as a Skill Bonus, for damage calculations.
Applying a +10 Torpedo console to the above calculations…. Base & Bonus remain the same, but
(1383 x 2.10) = 2904.3
+1101
4005.3 < — final modified damage (rounded off in-game)

So, a +10 console resulted in a damage bonus of 138!

Weapon Damage Calculators:
Standard Issue = 1.00
Mk 1 = 1.08 (1.082)
Mk 2 = 1.18 (1.184)
Mk 3 = 1.29 (1.286)
Mk 4 = 1.39 (1.388)
Mk 5 = 1.49 (1.490)
Mk 6 = 1.59 (1.592)
Mk 7 = 1.69 (1.694)
Mk 8 = 1.80 (1.796)
Mk 9 = 1.90 (1.898)
Mk 10 = 2.00

To find “Standard Issue” damage, find a Mk X item on the Exchange and cut the damage in half. Inspecting an item on the Exchange will NOT attribute your modifiers to its totals.
