Mattermost does open source the right way.

Mattermost is doing it the right way: designing and building a beautiful user experience, and backing it up with the awesomeness of open source. Now you can make your users happy, and benefit from the four freedoms… that’s the way to do it.

This script will take a clean Ubuntu 14.04 server on Digital Ocean and set it up to be used as a Mattermost server. It also takes care of securing the server.

A New Ubuntu Phone Is In Development

Midori is the name of a nimble WebKit-based web browser — but might it also be the codename for a new Ubuntu Phone?

Reader Richard S — and big thanks to you Richard! — pointed us to bug #1551811. This bug mentions the device codename ‘Midori’ with regards to a ‘trust prompt’ issue that causes a reboot on the MX4 and the mystery new handset.

A quick Google shows that the codename ‘Midori’ is in keeping with the codenames of previous Ubuntu devices, as it is, is once again, based on a character from the Dragon Ball franchise

Next-Generation Secure Network Tunnel Announced For The Linux Kernel

It’s much simpler than anything before it, with peers exchanging short Curve25519 public keys just like in SSH. Secure network interfaces can be added and removed using the usual ‘ip-link’ and ‘ip-address’ tools. From there, everything is easily taken care of by the kernel, and secure tunnels are made quite simple. Not only that, but the performance is in fact better than IPsec, which is quite the accomplishment.”

Disclosure, I’ve reviewed various versions of the kernel code, over the past few months, and it seems sane, but note I am not a kernel networking developer :)

Is The Linux Desktop Dead?

All hail our new overlords the mobile, the portable, and slim. With high-end devices like the NUC redefining what it means to be a desktop computer, and mobiles massive market share, and now the latest crop of “desktop killer” laptops make us question how many of us will be running Linux on a “traditional desktop” in 10 years?

Entroware will soon be announcing a new laptop and I had the privilege of naming her! The Entroware Athena will soon be available for purchase, pre-installed with either Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS.

Athena

Athena is available now, with either 15“ or 17″ screen, two Intel i7 CPU options, nvidia 970M or 980M GPU, upto 64GB RAM, 2x M.2, 2x SATA and comes pre-installed with either Ubuntu or Ubuntu MATE

Virtualization

libvirt

Libvirt is collection of software that provides a convenient way to manage virtual machines and other virtualization functionality, such as storage and network interface management. These software pieces include a long term stable C API, a daemon (libvirtd), and a command line utility (virsh). A primary goal of libvirt is to provide a single way to manage multiple different virtualization providers/hypervisors, such as the KVM/QEMU, Xen, LXC, OpenVZ or VirtualBox hypervisors

The virt-manager application is a desktop user interface for managing virtual machines through libvirt. It primarily targets KVM VMs, but also manages Xen and LXC (linux containers). It presents a summary view of running domains, their live performance & resource utilization statistics. Wizards enable the creation of new domains, and configuration & adjustment of a domain’s resource allocation & virtual hardware. An embedded VNC and SPICE client viewer presents a full graphical console to the guest domain.

Chromebooks outsold Macs for the first time in the US

Google’s low-cost Chromebooks outsold Apple’s range of Macs for the first time in the US recently. While IDC doesn’t typically break out Windows vs. Chromebook sales, IDC analyst Linn Huang confirmed the milestone to The Verge. “Chrome OS overtook Mac OS in the US in terms of shipments for the first time in 1Q16,” says Huang. “Chromebooks are still largely a US K-12 story.”

Fedora just missed rebasing on the goodness that is Linux 4.6

  • Fedora 24 ships June 14, 2016

And because of that, it looks like Linux kernel 4.6 will not be the default for the Fedora 24 operating system, which will ship in less than a month, on June 14, 2016, with the latest maintenance release of the Linux 4.5 kernel series. However, the chances are that Linux kernel 4.6 will be shortly released to the stable channels for users to upgrade their current kernel after Fedora 24’s official release.

Linux kernel 4.6 was announced by Linus Torvalds on May 15, 2016. It promises to offer users a new distributed file system, OrangeFS, support for the USB 3.1 SuperSpeed Plus (SSP) protocol, Out Of Memory task killer reliability improvements, support for Intel Memory protection keys, the Kernel Connection Multiplexor, as well as 802.1AE MAC-level encryption (MACsec) support.

Moreover, Linux kernel 4.6 ships with support for the BATMAN V protocol, an online inode checker for the OCFS2 file system, dma-buf, support for cgroup namespaces, and support for the pNFS SCSI layout. The first GNU/Linux distributions to adopt the Linux 4.6 kernel branch are Gentoo, Arch Linux, and SparkyLinux, and openSUSE Tumbleweed should join them in the coming weeks.

Linux Solves Rubics Cube

The fastest time for a human to solve a Rubik’s cube is 4.9 seconds. This robot can do it in 1.019 seconds.

Software engineers Jay Flatland and Paul Rose built this piece of kit, which uses four webcams to determine the state of the jumbled cube. The information is then fed into a computer, using the Kociemba Rubik’s cube-solving algorithm to work out a set of moves to solve the puzzle. A set of small motors mounted in a 3D-printed frame then swivel the, presumably extremely well-oiled, Rubik’s cube.

The previous quickest time for a robot to solve the cube is 2.39 seconds, so it looks like this could be a record breaker; however, they’re still waiting for official verification from Guinness World Records.

Pretty impressive. Although some super slow-motion footage wouldn’t go amiss.

Solus 1.1 to Land Really Soon, Users Needed to Test AMD GPU Drivers

Where the Heck is Wayland?

Peter argues that the question “Is Wayland ready yet?” is not the best question to ask. Then maybe this is a better question:

Is GNOME on Wayland ready yet ?

This is why the question “is wayland ready yet” does not make a lot of sense. Wayland is the communication protocol and says very little about the implementation of the two sides that you want to communicate.

Sway is a drop-in replacement for the i3 window manager, but for Wayland instead of X11. It will work with your existing i3 configuration file, and adds a few extra features on top of that.

Linux Foundation leadership controversy eruptst

A debate has sprung up in Linux circles over whether the Linux Foundation is serving individual open-source users or its corporate sponsors.

Since last Saturday, I have been engaged in meetings on behalf of The Linux Foundation in China, with limited access to email and/or Internet. As a result, I have only recently become aware of a situation playing out over the last 24-48 hours in social media that demands an immediate response.

The by-laws were amended to drop the clause that permitted individual members to elect any directors. Section 3.3(a) now says that no affiliate members may be involved in the election of directors, and section 5.3(d) still permits at-large directors but does not require them[2]. The old version of the bylaws are here – the only non-whitespace differences are in sections 3.3(a) and 5.3(d).

But Garrett speculates that the change was made to prevent Karen Sandler, executive director of the Software Freedom Conservancy and a staunch supporter of software freedom, from succeeding in her recently announced election bid for the Linux Foundation board. Sandler’s organization is currently enmeshed in a legal battle against VMware over claims that the company violated the terms of the GPL, the license that governs the open source code of Linux and many other major open source projects.

The EPA says Volkswagen cheated on emissions testing again – YouTube

What route does someone who cares about this kinda stuff take. Do we just avoid all this stuff until its sorted out? I mean seriously, why not

The Volkswagen diesel crisis is an ongoing reminder of the dilemma that proprietary auto software and hardware is presenting for automakers and consumers. In September, VW disclosed that alleged “defeat devices” were installed in 2009-15 VW and Audi diesel cars. How was VW able to get away with this for so long? Because the automaker’s onboard software is protected against outside inspection.

But as shocking as Volkswagen’s fraud may be, it only heralds more of its kind. It’s time to address one of the most urgent if overlooked tech transparency issues—secret code in the criminal justice system. Today, closed, proprietary software can put you in prison or even on death row. And in most U.S. jurisdictions you still wouldn’t have the right to inspect it. In short, prosecutors have a Volkswagen problem.

Mr. Moglen, a lawyer, technologist and historian who founded the Software Freedom Law Center, has argued for decades that software ought to be transparent. That would best serve the public interest, he said in his 2010 speech.

“Software is in everything,” he said, citing airplanes, medical devices and cars, much of it proprietary and thus invisible. “We shouldn’t use it for purposes that could conceivably cause harm, like running personal computers, let alone should we use it for things like anti-lock brakes or throttle control in automobiles.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Moglen recalled the elevator in his hotel.

“Intelligent public policy, as we all have learned since the early 20th century, is to require elevators to be inspectable, and to require manufacturers of elevators to build them so they can be inspected,” he said. “If Volkswagen knew that every customer who buys a vehicle would have a right to read the source code of all the software in the vehicle, they would never even consider the cheat, because the certainty of getting caught would terrify them.”

But on Tuesday, the Library of Congress issued exemptions to DMCA that pleased many auto enthusiasts. In a ruling that also freed those who wish to modify tablets and smart TVs, the LOC said, more or less, monkey away.
