Obama staffing up to prepare for the next two years

A model was his recent appointment of retired Gen. John Allen as special envoy for Iraq and Syria. More such top-level hires may be coming in an effort to widen the administration’s bandwidth. ‘We are aware that the next two years will be transformative in the Middle East, the Iran relationship and Asia,’ says a senior White House official.

Fighting ISIS: $1.1bn already spent, ‘30 years of war’ to come

The fight against IS may take quite a long time, according former
Pentagon chief Leon Panetta, who said “we’re looking at kind
of a 30-year war”
in an interview with USA Today.

“It’s going to take a long time to go after these elements,” he said.

US ends ban on ‘domestic propaganda’ — RT USA

The Smith-Mundt Act has ensured for decades that government-made media intended for foreign audiences doesn’t end up on radio networks broadcast within the US. An amendment tagged onto the National Defense Authorization Act removed that prohibition this year

The longstanding federal law made it illegal for the US Department of State to share domestically the internally-authored news stories sent to American-operated
outlets broadcasting around the globe. All of that changed effective July 2, when the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) was given permission to let US households tune-in to hear the
type of programming that has previously only been allowed in outside nations.

Plus new leaks from the CIA Torture report suggest the scope of waterboarding and other tactics by the CIA were much more brutal than the public has been lead to believe.

Then we end on a surprising high note, and in-depth discussion.

CIA Torture Report

CIA ‘tortured al-Qaeda suspects close to the point of death by drowning them in water-filled baths’ – Telegraph

As the US Senate prepares to release a report documenting US
torture programme after 9/11, Telegraph reveals new details about the scope
of CIA excesses

“They weren’t just pouring water over their heads or over a cloth,” said the source who has first-hand knowledge of the period. “They were holding them under water until the point of death, with a doctor present to make sure they did not go too far. This was real torture.”

The account of extreme CIA interrogation comes as the US Senate prepares to publish a declassified version of its so-called Torture Report – a 3,600-page report document based on a review of several million classified CIA documents.

Publication of the report is currently being held up by a dispute over how much of the 480-page public summary should remain classified, but it is expected to be published within weeks.

Snowden

The Swiss attorney general has said that whistleblower Edward Snowden can reside there if he responds to state requests for testimony against the US National Security Agency (NSA).

A document provided to the Swiss Sunday newspaper Sonntagszeitung is titled, “What are the rules would apply to consider when Edward Snowden would [be] brought to Switzerland and then the United States would make a request for extradition“, and it relates that the rules would allow the movement and repel the requests.

Speaking to the newspaper, Snowden’s Swiss lawyer Marcel Bosonnet revealed that he is pleased with the results of the study, commenting that, “The legal requirements for safety are met.”

ISIS

Seven in 10 Americans believe ISIS has the resources to launch an attack against the United States, just days before President Barack Obama plans to address the nation on the subject.

The poll released Monday shows that Americans favor:

— Additional airstrikes against ISIS (76% favor, 23% oppose)

— Military aid to forces fighting ISIS (62% favor, 37% oppose)

— Providing humanitarian aid to people fleeing ISIS (83% favor, 16% oppose)

U.S. targets ISIS fighters near Iraq’s second-largest dam

But a majority of Americans, 61%-38%, oppose placing U.S. soldiers on the ground in Iraq and Syria to combat the terrorist group.

Even as Americans support military action against ISIS, they still want Obama to seek authority from Congress before taking any action. More than 7 in 10 Americans think Obama should ask Congress for the ability to strike ISIS militarily. And 8 in 10 Americans support Congress approving military force against ISIS.

Washington’s indoor pot grows could be big power suck – Local – MyNorthwest.com

“You’re installing 1,000 watt lights over about every two plants and running those 16 to 18 hours a day to grow the product over a 10, 12, 14 week cycle. It’s a pretty significant consumption of electricity.”

The council studied a number of growers across the state earlier this summer after they were granted licenses by the Washington State Liquor Control Board. It determined demand for electricity could grow between 60 and 160 average megawatts over the next few years.

“That’s significant,” Eckman says. “That’s about half of the size of a new combustion turbine gas generating plant.”

Since Washington voters in 2012 approved an initiative to legalize recreational pot use by adults, the state Liquor Control Board has so far issued more than 200 licenses to marijuana growers out of about 2,500 who have applied.

Colorado is now selling more recreational pot than medical pot, a turning point for the newly legal industry.

Tax records released by the state Department of Revenue on Wednesday showed that the state sold $29.7 million worth of recreational marijuana in July, the most recent data available. That was slightly higher than the $28.9 million worth of medical marijuana sold in the same month.

Colorado has many more medical pot shops than recreational pot shops, which are open to all 21 and over. Colorado has some 500 medical shops, fewer than 200 open to all adults.

Since January, Colorado has reaped more than $37 million in taxes from marijuana. That figure includes taxes, licenses and fees from both medical and recreational pot.

NSA is Crazy

The Obama administration has asked a special court for approval to hold onto National Security Agency phone records for a longer period–an unintended consequence of lawsuits seeking to stop the phone-surveillance program.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the Justice Department was considering such a move, which would end up expanding the controversial phone records database by not deleting older call records.

Under the current system, the database is purged of phone records more than five years old. The Justice Department, in a filing made public Wednesday, said it needs to hold onto the older records as evidence in lawsuits brought by the American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and others.

Under the proposal made to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the older data would continue to be held, but NSA analysts would not be allowed to search it.

After having stopped spying on Merkel, the NSA is now focusing on German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière and other confidants (google translate)

These agencies are attempting to control, infiltrate, manipulate, and warp online discourse, and in doing so, are compromising the integrity of the internet itself.

Among the core self-identified purposes of JTRIG are two tactics: (1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable.

Other tactics aimed at individuals are listed here, under the revealing title “discredit a target”:

Then there are the tactics used to destroy companies the agency targets:

GCHQ describes the purpose of JTRIG in starkly clear terms: “using online techniques to make something happen in the real or cyber world,” including “information ops (influence or disruption).”

The moderators at the giant r/news reddit (with over 2 million subscribed readers) repeatedly killed the Greenwald/Snowden story on government manipulation and disruption of the Internet … widely acknowledged to be one of the most important stories ever leaked by Snowden.

Similarly, the moderators at the even bigger r/worldnews reddit (over 5 million subscribers) repeatedly deleted the story, so that each new post had to start over at zero.

Under current plans, a joint venture between Brazilian telecoms provider Telebras and Spain’s IslaLink Submarine Cables would lay the communications link. Telebras would have a 35 percent stake, IslaLink would have a 45 percent interest and European and Brazilian pension funds could put up the remainder.

Brazil and the European Union are joining forces against the National Security Agency and spying by the United States. Brazil and the EU announced they will build an undersea communications cable to connect the two areas and to reduce the reliance on cables going through the US. The proposed $185 million cable would stretch from Fortaleza, Brazil to Lisbon, Portugal.

Shrinking the Beast

In a speech at the one-year mark of his tenure as Pentagon chief, Hagel revealed many details of the defense spending plan that will be part of the 2015 budget that President Barack Obama will submit to Congress next week. Hagel described it as the first Pentagon budget to fully reflect the nation’s transition from 13 years of wa

Some of that risk, Hagel said, is associated with a sharp drawdown in the size of the Army, which the proposed budget calls for reducing to as low as 440,000 active duty soldiers from the current size of 520,000, while ensuring the force remains well trained and equipped.

The cuts assume the United States no longer becomes involved in large, prolonged stability operations overseas on the scale of Iraq and Afghanistan. “An Army of this size is larger than required to meet the demands of our defense strategy,” Hagel said. “It is also larger than we can afford to modernize and keep ready.”

“It is my judgment that the Department of Defense needs an appropriation of at least $540 billion for FY2011 for US military to properly carry out its mission, maintain readiness and prepare for the future,” said Gates, who also discussed cuts he’s made to the military budget, on programs no longer needed.
However, what is not widely known is that most of the $78 billion he’s cut would not take place until 2014 and 2015, when there will be a new secretary of defense and possibly a new president.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel recommended Monday that U.S. troops be reduced levels not seen since prior to World War II. In a news conference at the Pentago.

The future of the A–10s is up in the air again after Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel outlined Monday massive proposed cuts to the military.

In the first half of fiscal 2013, however, those eligible to shop in military commissaries – which include disabled veterans and others with military identification – cashed in nearly $53 million in food stamps, according to data provided to The Huffington Post by the Defense Commissary Agency. In 2011, more than 5,000 “active duty military” relied on the government aid.

A September report by nonprofit think tank Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimated that at least 900,000 veterans received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program assistance, or food stamps, each month.

You might disagree with Obama’s priorities, but Cheney’s claim is based entirely on the notion that Hagel and Obama are proposing military cuts. But they aren’t. Hagel proposed a change in force structure that would lead to a smaller Army, but his overall budget proposal is $115 billion more than the current sequester levels demanded by Republicans

The U.S. Army is giving away 13,000 armored trucks, worth about $500,000 each. The 20-ton MRAPs, or Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected trucks, were built specifically to save U.S. soldiers from roadside bombs in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Now the trucks are patrolling U.S. city streets. U.S. law enforcement agencies have received the lion’s share of this high-powered military surplus. (Source: Bloomberg)

One proposal would be to put phone metadata collection under the purview of US telecommunications companies. Under this option, the NSA would inform the companies of when it needs to search their databases for terrorism-related investigations, and the phone companies would return only the results of those searches, rather than data on consumers unrelated to the investigations.

A second proposal would see a different federal agency hold the data — the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), for instance — and a third would place them under the control of a third entity that’s neither a federal agency nor a telecom company.

The final proposal would abolish the data collection program altogether, an option that Obama in January said would require more work “to determine exactly how this system might work.”

This article is a list of countries by military expenditure, the amount spent by a nation on its military in a given year.

We currently spend more on defense than the next 10 countries combined. Defense spending accounts for about 20 percent of all federal spending — nearly as much as Social Security, or the combined spending for Medicare and Medicaid.

Mike Lofgren, a former GOP congressional staff member with the powerful House and Senate Budget Committees, joins Bill to talk about what he calls the Deep State, a hybrid of corporate America and the national security state, which is “out of control” and “unconstrained.” In it, Lofgren says, elected and unelected figures collude to protect and serve powerful vested interests.

Ukraine mayhem

The Maidan council named Arseniy Yatsenyuk to become prime minister. The cabinet – to be voted on by MPs on Thursday – includes leading activists.

The US has offered Ukraine’s struggling economy – which faces default – loan guarantees of up to $1bn (£600m).

Meanwhile, Mr Yanukovych has been put on the international wanted list.

The fugitive president – whose whereabouts are unclear – is accused of being behind last week’s deaths of more than 100 protesters at the hands of riot police in and around the Maidan.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington planned to offer Ukraine the loan guarantees to help stabilise the country’s economy.

Mr Kerry also warned Russia it would be a “grave mistake” to embark on any military intervention in Ukraine.

Russia ordered surprise military exercises on Ukraine’s doorstep Wednesday as tensions in that country’s southern Crimea region simmered, with pro-Russian demonstrators facing off against rival protesters in the city of Simferopol.

NSA is CRAZY

Video of NSA leaker Edward Snowden surfaced late Friday. Snowden was last seen on video back in June, when he appears on camera for The Guardian discussing the reasons for releasing the details of the NSA’s surveillance programs. Since then, Snowden received asylum in Russia and just recently was awarded the Sam Adams Associates for Integrity in Intelligence award.

The Washington Post is out with the latest revelations from the Snowden leaks and it shows that the NSA relies on foreign telcos and “allied” intelligence agencies to scoop up data on email contact lists and instant messaging buddy lists to help build its giant database of connections.

And here’s the big problem: because all of this information is collected overseas, rather than at home, it’s not subject to “oversight” (and I use that term loosely) by the FISA court or Congress. Those two only cover oversight for domestic intelligence. The fact that the NSA can scoop up all this data overseas is just a bonus.

The latest revelations about the NSA’s collection of buddy lists and email address books pointed out that those issues weren’t covered by Congressional oversight, since they happened overseas. When the Washington Post questions Feinstein’s office about this, a senior staffer seemed unconcerned, mentioning that perhaps they should be asking questions about it

David Cameron has encouraged a Commons select committee to investigate whether the Guardian has broken the law or damaged national security by publishing secrets leaked by the National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.

“Glenn Greenwald, the thorn in the proverbial back of NSA and its colonial cousin GCHQ is leaving the Guardian to start his own news organization. Greenwald said ‘My partnership with the Guardian has been extremely fruitful and fulfilling: I have high regard for the editors and journalists with whom I worked and am incredibly proud of what we achieved. The decision to leave was not an easy one, but I was presented with a once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity that no journalist could possibly decline. Because this news leaked before we were prepared to announce it, I’m not yet able to provide any details of this momentous new venture, but it will be unveiled very shortly.’”

Journalists Jeremy Scahill and Laura Poitras will be working with Glenn Greenwald on a new media venture funded by billionaire eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Omidyar Network is a philanthropic investment firm dedicated to harnessing the power of markets to create opportunity for people to improve their lives. Established in 2004 by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, the organization invests in and helps scale innovative organizations to catalyze economic, social, and political change. To date, Omidyar Network has committed more than $270 million to for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations that foster economic advancement and encourage individual participation across multiple investment areas, including property rights, government transparency, and social media.

Army General Keith Alexander’s eight-year tenure was rocked this year by revelations contained in documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden about the agency’s widespread scooping up of telephone, email and social-media data.

Alexander has formalized plans to leave by next March or April, while his civilian deputy, John “Chris” Inglis, is due to retire by year’s end, according to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

This Week’s New Supporters:

The report identifies 22 commentators with industry ties that suggest a financial interest in war. While they appeared on television or were quoted as experts 111 times, their links to military firms were disclosed only 13 of those times.

The following report documents the industry ties of Hadley, 21 other media commentators, and seven think tanks that participated in the media debate around Syria. Like Hadley, these individuals and organizations have strong ties to defense contractors and other defense- and foreign policy-focused firms with a vested interest in the Syria debate, but they were presented to their audiences with a veneer of expertise and independence, as former military officials, retired diplomats, and independent think tanks.

Shutdown Showdown

Senate leaders have reached an agreement on a compromise that would fund the government until Jan. 15 and extend the debt limit until Feb. 7.

“I think it’s important for people in the Republican Party around the country not to just come in at the end and say, ‘Congress was dysfunctional,’ or ‘Congress screwed up.’ That’s too easy to do,” King said. “Say who it was. Because it wasn’t Congress. It was one person who was able to steamroll Congress and unless we target him for what he is, he’s going to do it again. So I’m hoping other Republicans will join me and start going after this guy, and say we’re not going to let it happen again.”

John McCain is clearly glad to have this government shutdown mess behind him, going on the Senate floor today shortly after the bipartisan deal was announced to say the past few weeks have been “one of the more shameful chapters” of the Senate’s history.

Sen. Ted Cruz’ hometown newspaper, the Houston Chronicle, wishes it could take back its endorsement.

The Chronicle’s editorial board, which endorsed Cruz, R-Texas, in his 2012 race, now says it misses his predecessor, former Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

“When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November’s general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation – that he follow Hutchison’s example in his conduct as a senator,” The Chronicle said. "Obviously, he has not done so.

“Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution,” the board added.

“Is there a little bit of ransom paid? I mean, there is a provision in here that requires verification for recipients of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.”

Obama’s Curious Purge Of The Military

But Major General Michael Carey and Vice Admiral Tim Giardina (fired amidst rumors of misbehavior involving alcohol and gambling) are just the latest in a recent rash of firings in the military’s top ranks.

Are these the men standing between us and martial law? They have been fired over various things ranging from sexual harassment to lack of trust. One thing they all have in common is their combat roles. They were all commanders of combat units.

The firing of two nuclear commanders in a week adds to a body count that suggests we have either the most corrupt and incompetent general staff in history or our military is being reshaped for other purposes.

Oh no… GMO?

SEATTLE — Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced Wednesday that his office is filing a suit against the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) for violation of the state’s campaign disclosure law.

Ferguson alleges the GMA skirted the rules in its $7.2 million contribution to the "No on 522″ campaign and that the association illegally collected and spent the monies while shielding the identify of its contributors.

“When Washington state voters overwhelming approved Initiative 276 in 1972, they voiced their desire for transparency and openness in elections,” Ferguson said. “Truly fair elections demand all sides follow the rules by disclosing who their donors are and how much they are spending to advocate their views.”

Science of Leap Year

  • The low down
  • A day, defined by how long it takes for a star to appear in the same place again, is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds.
  • During that time the Earth has moved forward one day in it’s orbit of the sun in order to keep up with this so that the Sun appears the in same place you have to add about 3min 56 seconds, and that’s where 24 hours comes from.
  • Earths orbit is not precisely circular, it is actually a eccentric circle
  • Average Year is 365.242374 days long, that’s 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes, 12 seconds
  • Significance
  • Adding a day every fours years makes the average 365.25, which gets closer than the calenders 365
  • Leap year are there to keep the calender aligned so that roughly noon on Dec 21 (solstice) the same point on the Earth is tilted towards the sun.
  • To get even closer every 100 years is not a leap year but every 400 years is a leap year.
  • * Of Note*
  • Related to the Year 2000 computer program, many programs would have calculated leap year incorrectly
  • For example, 1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not. Similarly, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2500, 2600, 2700, 2900 and 3000 will not be leap years, but 2400 and 2800 will be.

Looking back

  • Mar 06, 1869 : 143 years ago : Periodic Table : Dmitry Mendeleev published his first version of the periodic table of the elements. He was a Russian chemist who developed the periodic classification of the elements. In his final version of the periodic table (1871) he left gaps, foretelling that they would be filled by elements not then known and predicting the properties of three of those elements. • Mar 06, 1950 : 62 years ago : Silly Putty : Silly Putty was introduced as a toy by Peter Hodgson, a marketing consultant, who packaged one-ounce portions of the rubber-like material in plastic eggs. It could be stretched, rolled into a bouncing ball, or used to transfer colored ink from newsprint. The original discovery was made in 1943 by James Wright who combined silicone oil and boric acid at the laboratories of General Electric. He was researching methods of making synthetic rubber, but at the time no significant application existed for the material. However, it was passed around as a curiosity. Hodgson saw a sample and realized its potential simply for entertainment and coined its name for marketing it as a toy. Its popularity made him a millionaire.

So, it snowed in the Seattle area. And as happens every year, everyone in the area forgot how to operate a car. Tuning into the news to watch folks skidding on ice, sliding into ditches, and complaining about the delays is usually one of the highlights of the first snowfall in this region.

BUT NO. This morning, North and South Korea decided to SHOOT at eachother, causing a flare-up in ACTUAL news coverage that’s gotten in the way of enjoying our annual “Metro On Ice” showing. So you get to share our pain. We’ll be discussing the Korean conflict as well, cuz we just can’t get enough!

Early Tuesday morning, North and South Korea exchanged shots, shelling eachother with large artillery, raising tensions between the rivals to their highest level in more than a decade. (picture)
* Began as a threat from N. Korea for S. Korea to stop military drills near the maritime border between the two nations.
* S. Korea refused and began firing shells into the waters offshore of N. Korea.
* N. Korea responded to this by shelling the small island of Yeonpyeong, which houses a military installation and a small civilian population. (2 killed, 15 injured, no civilian casualties).
* S. Korea retaliated by scrambling fighter jets and firing howitzers across the border. (casualty numbers unreported)

Impact:
Stock Prices are the first thing people discuss this impacting.  Currency exchange and gold.
— WHAT THE FUCK, WORLD!?
— Allan (Listener) says, “That’s what war has always been about – the influence of political and economical change, by force.”
<Peregrine_Falcon> It was just six weeks ago that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il unveiled his youngest son Kim Jong Un as his heir apparent. In order to prove to the rest of the old guard that his son can handle leadership he wants to show that he’s a ‘tough guy.’ That’s why he allowed his son to order the attack on the island of Yeonpyeong.
<Peregrine_Falcon> He figures that now is a good time because the North Koreans all believe that the Obama adminstration lacks the guts to take any military action against them.

WAR??:
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, said an “indiscriminate attack on civilians can never be tolerated. Enormous retaliation should be made to the extent that (N. Korea) cannot make provocations again,” he said.

Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of U.S. forces in South Korea and the U.S.-led U.N. Command, said in a Facebook posting that the U.S. military is “closely monitoring the situation and exchanging information with our (South Korean) allies as we always do.”

Experts agree that Korean conflict is a major risk to the US
https://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2010-11-23-korea-reaction_N.htm

This act of aggression comes right on the heels of:
1) Kim Jong Ill appointing his son as heir apparent
* His son has no military experience – this attack may have been used as propaganda to improve the public’s view of his abilities as a military leader.
2) News was released of a new uranium enrichment plan that could further N. Korea’s nuclear program in violation of UN sanctions.
* Historically, smaller nations are prone to acts of aggression when their nuclear capabilities are made public.

It’s the first armed conflict of this scale in the region since the Armistice Agreement of 1953.

Follow my train of thought:
N. Korea is near-allies with China, and are also friendly with Iran.
If N. Korea decides to escalate and invade or further attack S. Korea, the US will respond.
Unless folks keep their heads and are CAREFUL and DIPLOMATIC about this situation, it could quickly boil over into a worldwide armed conflict.
(This is how World War I started, ya’ll.  Alliances and provocations!)

Some ‘experts’ that have been interviewed today are already talking about nuclear deterrent to large-scale conflict (that is, bombing Seoul).  Others are saying that China needs to be pressured to take a firmer hand in North Korea’s wellfare, since they currently supply a huge portion of the nation’s foreign aid.

It’s estimated by the UN that more than 10,000 N. Koreans have died of starvation over the past year.
