  • Google Announce new Hardware — Google announced the new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL; an interesting new camera called Google Clips; a new Google Home Mini and Max; a Pixelbook, and an updated Google Daydream.
  • Chrome OS gets a lot more interesting — This component, known as crosvm, runs untrusted operating systems along with virtualized devices. No actual hardware is emulated. This only runs VMs through the Linux’s KVM interface.
  • Sailfish X becomes a reality — Jolla have released the Sailfish X product page and the Jolla shop (which at the moment is dedicated to the selling of Sailfish X).
  • First 64-bit RISC-V SOC released — The processor is intended for AI, machine learning, networking, gateways and smart IoT devices.
  • Oracle advises White House against FOSS — Silicon Valley is comprised of IT vendors most of which fail. The USG is not a technology vendor nor is it a start-up. Under no circumstance should the USG attempt to become a technology vendor
  • Munich starts move back to Microsoft products
“The city will use MS Exchange. It will be used for mail and calendar, so Kolab will not be used anymore,” said the source, adding that the switch will take place in November.
  • Bitcoin Gold — The fork mainly seems to be a reaction to widespread ire directed at one Bitcoin mining giant in particular, China-based Bitmain. Bitmain was an important player in the Bitcoin Cash fork.

Thankfully, all of that has become unnecessary and using Netflix natively on Linux is now really easy and basically all you need to do is use Google Chrome.

The problem? Ubuntu no longer includes HAL by default nor in the Ubuntu Archive. Sites that use Flash DRM don’t work on Ubuntu out of the box.

Subject: If you pass by Colorado

For the road show I heard that you might pass by in Colorado. In case that is so, would be great if you like to come by for a beer at a microbrew.

Then the second thing, I was this week at a students meeting of linux users at the University, and it was great to see so many young people interested in linux.

They even helped installing Mint on whoever liked to try linux. Some of them where even running Arch! There were around 10-15 people, perhaps you like to meet them, they are the new generation of linux users.

Munich now a major contributor to open source

The city of Munich is a major contributor to free and open source projects, sending bugfixes to upstream developers, making available software solutions and sharing best practices and technical information. In August, Munich IT staff members shared the city’s accomplishments with the community of Debian developers, one of the main free software distributions.

what is wallabag? – wallabag

wallabag is a self hostable application for saving web pages. Unlike other services, wallabag is free (as in freedom) and open source.

With this application you will not miss content anymore. Click, save, read it when you want. It saves the content you select so that you can read it when you have time.

KeePassX

KeePassX saves many different information e.g. user names, passwords, urls, attachments and comments in one single database. For a better management user-defined titles and icons can be specified for each single entry. Furthermore the entries are sorted in groups, which are customizable as well. The integrated search function allows to search in a single group or the complete database.
KeePassX offers a little utility for secure password generation. The password generator is very customizable, fast and easy to use. Especially someone who generates passwords frequently will appreciate this feature.

Syncthing

Syncthing replaces proprietary sync and cloud services with something open, trustworthy and decentralized. Your data is your data alone and
you deserve to choose where it is stored, if it is shared with some third party and how it’s transmitted over the Internet.

Archiving a website with Wget

I’ll share the command I use to archive a single website.

wget -mpck –user-agent=”” -e robots=off –wait 1 www.foo.com

datto

The Datto Block Driver (Dattobd) solves the above problems. Dattobd is an open source Linux kernel module for point-in-time live snapshotting. Dattobd can be loaded onto a running Linux machine (without a reboot) and used to create an image file representing any block device at the instant the snapshot is taken. After the first snapshot, Dattobd tracks incremental changes to the block device and can therefore efficiently update existing backups by copying only the blocks that have changed.

Save WiFi/Individual Comments

Right now, the FCC is considering a proposal to require manufacturers to lock down computing devices (routers, PCs, phones) to prevent modification if they have a “modular wireless radio”[1][2]
or a device with an “electronic label”[3]. The rules would likely:

  • Restrict installation of alternative operating systems on your PC, like GNU/Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, etc.
  • Prevent research into advanced wireless technologies, like mesh networking and bufferbloat fixes
  • Ban installation of custom firmware on your Android phone
  • Discourage the development of alternative free and open source WiFi firmware, like OpenWrt
  • Infringe upon the ability of amateur radio operators to create high powered mesh networks to assist emergency personnel in a disaster.
  • Prevent resellers from installing firmware on routers, such as for retail WiFi hotspots or VPNs, without agreeing to any condition a manufacturer so chooses.

  • Save WiFi: Act Now To Save WiFi From The FCC | Hackaday

The folks at ThinkPenguin, the EFF, FSF, Software Freedom Law Center, Software Freedom Conservancy, OpenWRT, LibreCMC, Qualcomm, and other have put together the SaveWiFi campaign.

Online comments end 09/08/2015.

Freya 0.3.1 is Here!

At the heart of this upgrade is the latest Hardware Enablement stack from Ubuntu 14.04.3. It includes version 3.19 of the Linux kernel and an updated Mesa that fixes the dreaded “double cursor” glitch. Workspaces in the Multitasking view also now work properly on Nvidia Optimus. The new hardware stack also brings better support for backlights and touchpads on certain laptops, a host of performance and power-related improvements, and support for 5th generation Intel processors. This release should also improve support for (U)EFI systems, especially when installing without an internet connection.

Munich Linux councillor: ‘We didn’t propose a switch back to Windows’

“There are several points of criticism concerning the notebooks of the councillors with very different reasons (not Linux in general). There are 80 councillors in the city. Their work and needs can’t be compared with the whole administration.”

Pfeiler denied that there was any kind of consensus towards a complete reverse migration, but rather suggests a retroactive fitting of Windows for certain specific purposes, adding that there was nothing to suggest that the Limux system was working anything other than well.

Moka Project

Joined by “snwh” aka Sam Hewitt

Moka started as a single Linux desktop icon theme, but over time it has gradually evolved into an entire project & brand identity that provides quality designs to people.

Moka is about personalization and its goal is to provide an assortment of style options to allow you to customize your experience. Moka’s suite of themes is a “style layer” for your favourite OS – you can use your favourites and layer Moka right on top.

Munich Disappointed with Linux, Plans to Switch Back to Windows [Updated]

German media is reporting that city officials were looking into productivity figures of local departments and acknowledged that many employees actually experienced issues with Linux. That wasn’t the case before 2004, when Windows was powering all PCs, a local source said.
