NBC’s Brian Williams told varying versions of rocket fire in Israel-Hezbollah war

NBC News anchor Brian Williams certainly has placed himself in dangerous situations in covering wars and natural disasters over the years. But how much danger? With Williams, the answer varies.

In his words: Brian Williams’ interview with Stars and Stripes

Questions have also arisen around statements he made about reporting on Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans in 2005, and Israel’s war with the militant group Hezbollah in 2006.

Pentagon requests $534bn for 2016, largest ever war budget

The White House will be seeking $534 billion from Congress to run the Pentagon in 2016 — its largest budget ever.

However, a source told RT that the budget is actually closer to $1 trillion, and has been for several administrations.

Debate brews over whether Williams can survive controversy

Some critics suggest that Williams, who apologized last week for falsely claiming that he was in a helicopter that had been hit by a grenade while in Iraq in 2003, should be fired. Others wonder if commerce will win out, since Williams has kept “Nightly News” at the top of the ratings while much of his news division crumbled around him. How much are the years of good work worth?

“This is one of the toughest calls that I’ve ever seen,” said Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies at Fordham University. “On the one hand, the public is right to expect nothing but the truth from our reporters and our news anchors.”

Williams announced Saturday he was stepping away from the show for a few days. NBC News, which launched an internal probe, hasn’t given a timetable for how long its look into Williams’ statements, coordinated by the division’s investigative editor Richard Esposito, will take or if its report will be made public.

Williams’ sub, Lester Holt, told viewers midway through Monday’s broadcast that Williams had taken himself off the air because questions have been raised about how he recalled several stories. Holt did not specify what the stories or questions were.

“He’ll be off while this issue is dealt with,” Holt said.

Sony Demands Press Destroy Leaked Documents – Slashdot

In an effort that may run afoul of the first amendment, Sony, through their lawyer David Boies (of SCO infamy), has sent a letter to major news organizations demanding that they refrain from downloading any leaked documents, and destroy those already possessed. Sony threatens legal action to news organizations that do not comply, saying that “Sony Pictures Entertainment will have no choice but to hold you responsible for any damage or loss arising from such use or dissemination by you.”

Sony Planned to Flood Torrent Sites With “Promo” Torrents

Sony Pictures’ TV network AXN developed a guerrilla marketing campaign to convert users of The Pirate Bay, KickassTorrents and other torrent sites to paying customers. The company planned to flood torrent sites with promos for the premiere Hannibal disguised as pirated copies of the popular TV-show.

The revelations are part of the Sony Pictures leaks which contain a discussion on the plan, framing it as a “brilliant antipiracy social campaign.” The AXN employee describes the idea as follows.

“The idea is simple. We made a promo dedicated to Hannibal which is convincing people in very creative and noinvasive way to watch Hannibal legally on AXN instead downloading it from torrents.

“[T]his promo is supposed to be downloaded on the torrents sites, imitating the first episode of Hannibal season 2 but in reality would be only a 60 sec promo. The torrents sites are exactly the place where people just after [the] US premier would be searching for the first episode of season 2. So the success of this project is more than 100% sure.”

Unfortunately for the AXN Central Europe team the advertising campaign wasn’t well received at Sony Pictures’ headquarters in Los Angeles.

Sony Pictures Executive Vice President, who emphasized that it was a no go.

“Forget about a site blocking strategy if we start putting legitimate PSAs or promos on sites we’ve flagged to governments as having no legitimate purpose other than theft… PSAs being for public good, etc…”*

And so it never happened…

Ars Technica is the latest site to fall victim to hack | The Verge

There has been a lot of hacking news in the past few weeks, and now noted technology news site Ars Technica has fallen victim to a hack. The site’s front page has gone black, with white text reading “Ars Security” alongside a couple of Twitter handles, presumably of those who have taken control of the site. There’s also some music playing to keep you occupied while waiting for the site to come back online.

The issue doesn’t appear to be completely widespread, as some Verge staffers located in different points around the globe aren’t currently having issues connecting to the site. Ars itself is also aware of the hack; the site’s Twitter account indicates they should be back online soon.

NBC to Live Stream Network Shows – WSJ

NBC is launching a live stream of its broadcast network, part of a broader effort at parent NBCUniversal to make more of its content available online via computers and mobile devices.

Instead, to access NBC’s live stream as well as additional content the company plans to offer via an on-demand platform, consumers will have to provide proof that they already have a pay-TV subscription.

NBC’s live stream will debut Tuesday online, and mobile platforms will be available early next year. Walt Disney Co.’s ABC launched a live stream of its network last year.

Separately, NBCUniversal is also going to start making content from its Bravo and Telemundo networks available through Microsoft Corp. ’s Xbox One game console. USA and Syfy already have deals with Xbox One.

NSA is Crazy

Germany opens inquiry into claims NSA tapped Angela Merkel\’s phone

Germany\’s federal prosecutor has defied public expectations by opening an investigation into the alleged tapping of Angela Merkel\’s mobile phone by the US\’s National Security Agency (NSA).

Federal prosecutor Harald Range announced on Wednesday: \”I informed parliament\’s legal affairs committee that I have started a preliminary investigation over tapping of a mobile phone of the chancellor.\”

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

Here\’s some Recent Hostage Negotiations:

  • After the North Koreans captured the U.S.S. Pueblo in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson apologized for spying as part of negotiations to secure the release of 83 American prisoners.

  • In 1970, President Richard Nixon pressured Israel, Switzerland, West Germany and Britain to release Palestinian prisoners after two airlines were hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

  • During the Iran hostage crisis of 1979 to 1981, President Jimmy Carter agreed to unfreeze $8 billion in frozen Iranian assets after more than a year of negotiations with the Iranian revolutionaries.

  • In perhaps the most famous swap, after seven Americans were captured in Beirut, Lebanon, President Ronald Reagan agreed to send missiles to Iran in what became known as the Iran-Contra scandal.

  • President Bill Clinton\’s administration sat down with Hamas in attempts to negotiate peace with Israel. His administration also worked directly with the Taliban nearly two decades ago on several occasions to see if the group would hand over Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaida leaders.

  • Ronald Reagan, the president who really negotiated with terrorists

Iran-Contra, as you\’ll recall, almost laid waste to the Reagan presidency. Desperate to free U.S. hostages held by Iranian proxies in Lebanon, President Reagan provided weapons Tehran badly needed in its long war with Saddam Hussein (who, of course, was backed by the United States). In a clumsy and illegal attempt to skirt U.S. law, the proceeds of those sales were then funneled to the contras fighting the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. And as the New York Times recalled, Reagan\’s fiasco started with an emissary bearing gifts from the Gipper himself

Just as you have a responsibility to your country under the Code of Conduct, the United States government has an equal responsibility**** — ****to keep faith with you and stand by you as you fight for your country. If you are unfortunate enough to become a prisoner of war, you may rest assured that your government will care for your dependents and will never forget you. Furthermore, the government will use every practical means to contact, support and gain release for you and for all other prisoners of war.

Insane in the Ukraine:

Conflicting accounts in heightened eastern Ukraine fighting – CNN.com

A Ukrainian government spokesman claimed that more than 300 pro-Russia militants had been killed and at least 500 wounded during an ongoing Ukrainian military operation in the towns of Krasny Liman and Slovyansk.

The self-declared separatist mayor of Slovyansk, however, said only 10 separatist fighters had died and 12 were injured in the fighting.

CNN could not immediately confirm either report.

But a CNN investigation in Luhansk has found clear evidence that whatever detonations hit the building and the adjoining park came from the air. The tops of trees were splintered, and a series of small craters — about a dozen — had been blasted in a straight line, starting in the park and reaching the walls of the building, blowing out many of its windows and spraying the area with jagged shrapnel. That\’s what appears to have killed most of the victims and injured 20 more.

The pattern of the craters clearly indicated some sort of strafing, according to a munitions expert at the scene with CNN. Their size suggested 30-millimeter ordnance, he said, which is standard equipment on the Su-25, a ground attack fighter, and the Su-27 — both combat aircraft operated by Ukraine.

Obama vows to stand with Ukraine as he meets Poroshenko in Poland – CNN.com

U.S. President Barack Obama voiced his support for Ukraine\’s newly elected president and called for the international community to \”stand solidly behind\” him Wednesday, on a visit to Europe dominated by the crisis in Ukraine.

U.S. reaffirms: No weapons will go to Ukraine

State Department spokesman Jen Psaki reiterated this week that \”we\’ll continue to review their requests\” but that the U.S. policy hasn\’t changed regarding lethal weapons. When asked by a reporter here Tuesday whether the U.S. will provide such aid, Obama pointed out that during the Crimea crisis the U.S. provided non-lethal assistance.

WSP: Driver smoked pot before pile-up that injured 8 | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO News

A violent Monday evening car crash on State Route 2 in Snohomish County injured eight people, including five children.

Washington State Patrol troopers said the causing driver had smoked marijuana earlier in the day and she has since been arrested.

Maureen Dowd on pot candy bar: \’I became convinced that I had died\’

In Maureen Dowd\’s latest column for the New York Times, she describes her scary experience eating a pot candy bar while reporting on legalized marijuana in Colorado.

She sat in a Denver hotel room experimenting with the legalized edible, \”nibbling\” on some of the chocolate-flavored bar.

\”For an hour, I felt nothing […] But then I felt a scary shudder go through my body and brain. I barely made it from the desk to the bed, where I lay curled up in a hallucinatory state for the next eight hours,\” Dowd said.

She goes on to explain how her paranoia deepened, saying the high wore off \”distressingly slowly.\”

\”I had been convinced that I had died and no one was telling me,\” Dowd said.

Not counting medicinal weed sales, Colorado sold nearly $19 million in their recreational weed market in the month of March, and $1.9 million of that goes straight into government coffers and towards building schools.

The legislation smoked through the Republican-dominated House with a 218-189 vote in favor of the bill Friday. The bill\’s suprising majority vote represents increasingly joint views about federal oversight of state medical marijuana laws between Democrats and Republicans. The vote also reflects public opinion. The ratio of Americans in favor of medical marijuana is high at 73 percent, according to a Pew Research study.

  • NBC website compromised, malicious code injected

    • The official website of US broadcasting and media giant NBC was found to contain a malicious iframe pointing visitors to the RedKit Exploit Kit
    • The exploit kit used one of the vulnerabilities patched in Java 7u11 (released January 13th, although the issue was not fully fixed until Java 7 u13 on February 1st), as well as a .PDF exploit to drop the Citadel banking Trojan, a variant of the Zeus botnet only ever sold to the russian underground, to prevent infiltration by authorities and security companies
    • This attack could have been much worse if it has used one of the newer vulnerabilities that had not been patched until u15 (February 19th) or u17 (March 4th)
    • Many users are likely still using somewhat outdated versions of java due to the rapid release and the inefficacy of the java updater, and the addition of the .PDF exploit ensured a wider vulnerability
    • The attackers likely had ongoing access for a time, as the URL target of the iframe changed rapidly to avoid blocking of the delivery sites
    • One of the domains used in the iframe was an internationalized domain name, which translated from russian to my-new-sploit.com
    • The version of the Citadel trojan used in the exploit was only recognized by 3 of the 46 virus scanners on virustotal.com on the date of the attack
    • The infection was also detected on other NBC sites such as latenightwithjimmyfallon.com and jeylenosgarage.com, so it was likely an exploit against the CMS
    • These trusted sites are especially valuable as attack vectors for malware authors, because of their huge traffic volumes and the fact that users expect the large trusted sites to be free of malware or other risk
    • Facebook’s malware scanner detected something was wrong (since iframes of .jar and .pdf files are usually only seen in attacks), and blocked users from posting links to NBC.com (We have discussed Facebook malware scan that is part of their spider that fetches the preview images)
    • The malware was first detected by researchers at 16:43 CET on the 21st, it is unclear how long the injection was on the site before it was discovered
    • The malware was removed from the site by 21:28 CET

Bit9’s cloud security app compromised, 32 pieces of malware whitelisted

    • Bit9 is a security company whose main product is an application control software, which basically monitors all of the applications and processes running on a server or end-user device, and reports any unusual activity (applications not on the cloud maintained whitelist)
    • Customers of Bit9 include the US government, banks, oil and energy companies, defence contractors and 30 companies from the Fortune 100 list
    • Attackers managed to compromise one or more virtual machines at the company and gained access to a code signing certificate, subsequently using it to sign 32 pieces of malware, effectively whitelisting them
    • It turns out, due to an “operational oversight” a “handful” of computers at Bit9 did not run Bit9’s own software, so the intrusion was not detected or prevented
    • As such, Bit9 claims that the compromise was not due to a problem with their software
    • Bit9’s investigation suggests that only three of their customers were affected by the illegitimately signed malware
    • Bit9 revoked the certificate that was used to sign the malware (and probably all previously whitelisted binaries, Bit9 claims it was no longer actively using the stolen certificate, but that it was still valid), got a new certificate and resigned the whitelisted apps, and patched their software to blacklist anything signed with the revoked certificate
    • It is interesting to note that the most often touted features of the Bit9 system is that it stops new and unknown malware, because it only allows approved applications to run, the opposite of traditional anti-virus applications, which rely on a blacklist of known malware. In this case, it might have been that the compromised caused Bit9 to allow known malware that would have been stopped by traditional anti-virus to run on the target systems
    • Bit9 is not saying which of its customers were targeted, but based on other information and the list of industries Bit9 said were not targeted, it appears to have been a defence contractor
    • Official Update Announcement
    • Bit9 says the attackers originally compromised their systems in July of 2012 view an SQL injection flaw in software that was running on an internet accessible web server
    • From the web server, the attackers were able to compromise two legitimate user accounts, and eventually use those to access a virtual machine that contains the private keys for the code-signing certificate
    • The virtual machine that was compromised was shut down a few days later, the compromise undetected
    • In January that virtual machine was started again, and the compromise was eventually detected
    • Bit9 says evidence suggests that they were not the ultimate target of the attack, but rather just a stepping stone to eventually compromise one of their customers
    • Bit9’s audit showed that the source code for their software was not accessed or modified
    • The attackers later executed a watering hole attack (similar to the mobile developer forum attack that compromised twitter, facebook, apple and microsoft) against the 3 target Bit9 customers
    • The attack used a java vulnerability to execute the HiKit and Unixhome backdoors, two of the binaries that had been signed with the stolen Bit9 certificate. Rather than these being blocked by Bit9 as intended, because they had been signed by Bit9, they were whitelisted and allowed to run in the highly secured network of the defense contractors

Oracle issues another emergency Java patch after McRAT exploits new 0-day in the wild

    • The fix covers CVE–2013–1493 and CVE–2013–0809
    • The latter vulnerability is in the colour management system of Java 2D and allows an attack to use a specially crafted image file to execute a memory corruption attack. The attack targets the JVM’s internal data structures and overwrites the areas of memory that control whether the security manager to enabled or not
    • The exploit has been seen in the wild, successful exploited to drop the McRAT trojan
    • The security company that discovered the exploit reported that the McRAT trojan was communicating with the same Command and Control server that was used in an earlier attack against security company Bit9
    • FireEye blog post
    • Additional Coverage
    • The issue was originally reported on February 1st, Oracle claimed that was too late to be included in the February 19th patch. Oracle planned to sit on the update until the next scheduled update in April, but once it was being exploited in the wild they were forced to release this update
    • Java Security bulletin
    • Security Explorations has reported 7 more java vulnerabilities since February 25th
    • Oracle has rejected issue #54 claiming it is not a vulnerability, but the polish firm and US-CERT disagree, Security Explorations has sent additional details and proof of concept to help Oracle understand the vulnerability
    • Oracle has issued tracking numbers for issues #56–60 but clarifies that the issues are not ‘confirmed’ yet
    • This seems to signal an increasing resistance from Oracle and acknowledge and fix the bugs that researchers report, until it is too late and they are being actively exploited
