Executive Order — “Blocking the Property of Certain Persons Engaging in Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities” | The White House

U.S. Creates First Sanctions Program Against Cybercriminals : The Two-Way : NPR

The U.S. wants to slap sanctions on cybercriminals. President Obama issued an executive order Wednesday creating the nation’s first sanctions program to combat “malicious” cyberattacks and cyberspying.

President Obama said cyberthreats pose one of “the most serious economic and national security challenge” to the U.S., and that the executive order offers a “targeted tool” for countering that threat.

Disciplined nuclear officers tops 16

The Air Force has fired or disciplined at least 16 nuclear missile commanders or senior officers for misconduct and other failings over the past year and a half, reflecting turmoil in arguably the military’s most sensitive mission.

Another who quit of his own accord lamented upon leaving, “We let the American people down on my watch.”

The latest to be dismissed this week: a colonel accused of “cruelty and maltreatment” of a subordinate and a missile squadron commander found to have illegally discriminated against women under his command. In addition to those actions Monday, another senior officer was administratively disciplined but not removed from command.

This string of leadership lapses has beset a force that remains central to American defense strategy but in some respects has been neglected. The force of 450 Minuteman 3 nuclear missiles is primed to unleash nuclear devastation on a moment’s notice.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is expected soon to announce the results of an independent review of problems in the nuclear force.

US ends ban on ‘domestic propaganda’ — RT USA

The Smith-Mundt Act has ensured for decades that government-made media intended for foreign audiences doesn’t end up on radio networks broadcast within the US. An amendment tagged onto the National Defense Authorization Act removed that prohibition this year

The longstanding federal law made it illegal for the US Department of State to share domestically the internally-authored news stories sent to American-operated
outlets broadcasting around the globe. All of that changed effective July 2, when the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) was given permission to let US households tune-in to hear the
type of programming that has previously only been allowed in outside nations.

COLD WAR

But business concerns may not be the main driver of this Saudi oil policy. Instead, the Saudis may be flexing their muscular dominance of the world’s oil markets to advance geopolitical interests, from helping the energy-dependent military government of Egypt — a Saudi ally — to undermining the adversarial regimes in Syria and Iran as well as Russia, which has emerged as a key ally for those two embattled governments.

While falling oil prices certainly do hurt Saudi Arabia, the Saudis with their vast financial reserves are well-positioned to withstand the economic pain. That is less the case with Russia and Iran, both heavily invested in the defense of Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime. In other words, the Saudis may see the precipitous drop in oil prices as a weapon in the broader regional Shiite-Sunni proxy war, with Saudi Arabia leading the Sunni side versus Shiite-ruled Iran.

The depressed oil prices also dovetail with the Obama administration’s geopolitical interests by putting the squeeze on Russia and Iran as the West seeks to consolidate its control over Ukraine and tries to force Iran to capitulate in talks over its nuclear program.

But the Saudi geopolitical calculation to sustain record production above 9.5 million barrels per day is probably most directed at Syria where the Saudis have financed the Sunni-led campaign to overthrow Assad, who largely represents Alawite, Shiite, Christian and other minorities. By toppling Assad and replacing him with a Sunni-dominated government, Saudi Arabia would deal a severe blow to Iran and the region’s Shiites.

Thus, Saudi Arabia is willing to resist pressure from its partners in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries in order to advance what the Saudis see as their broader regional interests. For Riyadh, the self-inflicted economic pain is acceptable as long as it contributes to the broader imperative of inflicting pain on Assad and his backers.

Voters legalize recreational pot in Oregon

Oregon becomes the third U.S. state to legalize recreational pot. With two-thirds of precincts reporting, legal pot lead the race by eight percentage points, 54 to 46.

Polls showed Measure 91 was extremely close heading into Election Day.

Opinions on the measure varied by age. The measure had support from 56 percent of voters under age 35, but only 30 percent support from voters older than 65, polls showed.

“It’s always an uphill battle to win a marijuana legalization initiative in a year like this, when young people are so much less likely to vote, which makes today’s victory all the sweeter,” said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “The pace of reform is accelerating, other states are sure to follow, and even Congress is poised to wake from its slumber.”

Under the measure, Oregonians 21 and older will be able to possess and smoke marijuana starting July 1 of 2015.

New highs: Marijuana now legal in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington, DC | The Verge

Voters in Alaska, Oregon, and the District of Columbia voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use Tuesday, following in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington, which legalized the drug in 2012. A ballot measure to legalize marijuana for medical purposes failed in Florida, the Associated Press reports, where voters failed to meet the 60 percent threshold needed to pass a constitutional amendment.

Obama Signs Monsanto Protection Act

Pres. Obama inked his name to H.R. 933, a continuing
resolution spending bill approved in Congress days earlier. Buried 78 pages
within the bill exists a provision that grossly protects biotech
corporations such as the Missouri-based Monsanto Company from
litigation.

Section 735 was an anonymous rider attached to the spending bill (the one everyone wanted signed really, really quickly) and received almost no consideration or attention before being signed into law.

The provision codifies existing USDA practices and elements of a 2010 Supreme Court ruling that lower courts should not automatically prohibit the planting of biotech crop varieties, or the harvest and sale of biotech crops already planted, when their commercial approval is revoked for procedural reasons.

“Section 735 of the Senate appropriations bill/ CR (continuing resolution) contains language to provide some predictability and assurance to farmers who plant biotech crops that have already been deregulated by USDA but are then subject to litigation by anti-biotech activists. The language in the CR was included in the House Agriculture Appropriations bill during the 112th Congress and has, therefore, been in the public domain for a number of months,” noted Richard Gupton, Agricultural Retailers Association, senior vice president of public policy and counsel.

Gregory Conko, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, issued a statement that is quite critical of the protesting activists trying to stir up consumers who aren’t knowledgeable about agriculture or production of biotech crops.

What Obama signed into law was nothing new. Section 735 of H.R. 933 (the rider to the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act which has been dubbed, inaccurately, the Monsanto Protection Act) states that if companies (like Monsanto, yes) were to be involved in a lawsuit over a particular crop or practice, they would potentially be exempt from having to cease use of the crop or practice in question.

What this means in practical terms is that competitors cannot sue Monsanto frivolously and force them to face punitive action before the lawsuit is concluded. So instead of this happening, which would invariably lead to Monsanto tying the USDA up with millions of dollars in legal appeals, a seemingly logical solution to cut the red tape is introduced. It does not grant “immunity” because such claims are simply inaccurate – if a lawsuit concludes and the ruling is that the defendant, be it Monsanto or whomever, must cease their activities, then they must comply.

Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said.

The Real North Korea Threat

The U.S. military has moved a Navy ship capable of intercepting missiles to waters off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, as threats from North Korea’s Kim Jong Un escalate and the White House signals it wants to head off any potential conflict by flexing America’s military might.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons are a “treasure” not to be traded for “billions of dollars,” the statement said. They “are neither a political bargaining chip nor a thing for economic dealings to be presented to the place of dialogue or be put on the table of negotiations aimed at forcing (Pyongyang) to disarm itself,” it said.

North Korea’s “nuclear armed forces represent the nation’s life, which can never be abandoned as long as the imperialists and nuclear threats exist on earth,” the statement said.

“I consider the current North Korean threats very serious,” Ms. Park told the South’s generals. “If the North attempts any provocation against our people and country, you must respond strongly at the first contact with them without any political consideration.

Judge Rules Drug Sniffer Dogs Unconstitutional Without A Warrant!

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that police cannot bring drug-sniffing police dogs onto a suspect’s property to look for evidence without first getting a warrant for a search, a decision which may limit how investigators use dogs’ sensitive noses to search out drugs, explosives and other items hidden from human sight, sound and smell.

The high court split 5–4 on the decision to uphold the Florida Supreme Court’s ruling throwing out evidence seized in the search of Joelis Jardines’ Miami-area house. That search was based on an alert by Franky the drug dog from outside the closed front door.

Iran Says Nuclear Talks Resume After 8 Months

As the talks ended Wednesday in the Kazakh city of Almaty, Iran\’s top negotiator Saeed Jalili described the latest proposal by the six powers as \”positive,\” saying it is \”more realistic\” than previous ones. P5+1 is sometimes referred to as the E3+3 by European countries.

Over-hyped Sequester

It turns out the dollars-and-cents impact this year is not nearly what officials have been claiming. While officials typically say the cuts this year add up to $85 billion, the Congressional Budget Office estimates actual spending will only fall by $44 billion this year.

The $85 billion figure refers to \”budget authority\” — or what the government can allocate this year, but actually spend over several years. So the cuts this year are roughly half what officials have been claiming; further, the brunt of the impact is not expected to be felt for another month, or more.

Just watched your Unfilter show and I\’m so glad there is a show like yours telling of these topics and hidden agendas. I also agree with the email from Ed regarding archive of live chat available on the website for \’all\’ shows on Jupiter Broadcasting. I think this is a great idea, especially for those of us who can\’t always make the live shows, just like myself who live in different time zones. It also gives another reason for people to check out the web site and perhaps click on other shows or remind them of the affiliate links. Anyway, the idea is a great one, if its possible, please put this on your site as I too have looked for this in the past for several different shows.

Also, its great that you have the calendar, but as a foreigner living in Asia, it defaults to Asian language that I cannot easily translate as embedded into the English web page. If this can be sorted, great, or get an additional indicator; Next show is …. in …. hours minutes time.

Actually while I\’m on the subject and since its now December so you probably have nothing better to do; regardless of which JupiterBoradcasting.com page someone lands on, be that a direct link or from a search on Google etc, have a message display that the network in part provides great content because of the support of a great audience, so please consider adding affiliate add-ons or monthly subscriptions to be part or this greatness 🙂
Presumably done via a cookie that expires/refreshes every 24 hours, therefore the message would only display once within the 24 hour period. I don\’t think that would be too intrusive at all, I wouldn\’t mind it at all. Perhaps put it to a vote after checking how feasible it is to do.

Today, our closing week of J@N continues with an update to TWO separate topics previously covered on the show. And since today is Wednesday, we’ve decided to take a firmly science-ey approach to the topics!

First up, more de-classified military documents lead Chris to dig deep into the mysteries of Area 51, as a follow-up to our episode that had UFOs buzzing around US nuclear missile silos. After that, we take a look at the recently-discovered replacement for the debunked Planet Zarmina, which unlike it’s predecessor actually shows scientific evidence of being capable of supporting life!

– Off-axis orbit prevents spectrometry

  • In February of this year, the Kepler experiment announced the existence of over 1,200 “candidates” for extrasolar planets.
  • In March, they extrapolated their findings as a ratio:
    • “Roughly one out of every 37 to one out of every 70 sunlike stars in the sky might harbor an alien Earth.”
      • Given the size of our galaxy, this would indicate BILLIONS of potentially Earth-like planets.

Other neat discoveries have been made:

Chemical Means

Video : Space Shuttle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FROxZ5i67k
-Bi-Propellant/Liquid
*Rely on chemical reaction between two substances; *can be throttled; *high specific impulse; *can be re-used; *can be tested

Solid
*Burns at predictable rate; *can remain in storage for long periods; *can launch on short notice;

Heating

Nuclear thermal rocket : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_thermal_rocket
-In a nuclear thermal rocket a working fluid, usually liquid hydrogen, is heated to a high temperature in a nuclear reactor, and then expands through a rocket nozzle to create thrust.
– no nuclear thermal rocket has flown

Solar thermal rocket: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_thermal_rocket
Makes use of solar power to directly heat reaction mass, and therefore does not require an electrical generator as most other forms of solar-powered propulsion do
engine thrust is directly related to the surface area of the solar collector and to the local intensity of the solar radiation. Indirect solar heating involves pumping the propellant through passages in a heat exchanger that is heated by solar radiation
-Direct solar heating involves exposing the propellant directly to solar radiation

Gravitational Slingshot

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_slingshot
Gravity assistance can be used to accelerate, decelerate and/or re-direct the path of a spacecraft.
Animation – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3F88w3LkiI&NR=1
+ no propellant needed
– Everything has to be in just the right spot

Electrical Propulsion

Ion Thrusters : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_drive
-An ion thruster is a form of electric propulsion used for spacecraft propulsion that creates thrust by accelerating ions. Ion thrusters are categorized by how they accelerate the ions, using either electrostatic or electromagnetic force

-Russian satellites have used electric propulsion for decades, and newer Western geo-orbiting spacecraft are starting to use them for north-south station keeping.
+ high specific impulse
– Uses a large amount of power and low thrust
Solar sail
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_sails
-Using the radiation pressure of light from a star or laser to push enormous ultra-thin mirrors to high speeds.
-In 2010, IKAROS was the world’s first spacecraft designed to use solar sailing propulsion to be successfully launched https://www.jspec.jaxa.jp/e/activity/ikaros.html
-Video 1:24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eq2DATxcft0

Fusion rocket
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_rocket

Nuclear fusion reactions. In this kind of reaction, two light atomic nuclei fuse together to form a heavier nucleus and in doing so, release a large amount of energy.
– proposed reactor vessels are large and heavy, making them unsuitable to use on spacecraft in the foreseeable future
+ very high specific impulse
+ fusion rocket may produce less radiation than a fission rocket, reducing the mass needed for shielding

Speed

Speed of light : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_light
-1,079 million km/hr :: 671 million mi/hr
-Special relativity Theory : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_relativity
[*] The laws of physics would be unaffected by motion at a constant velocity
[*] The speed of light is constant and is the upper limit for the speeds of objects with positive rest mass

E=ymc2
* for an object at rest [ V=0 → y=1 ] → E=1*mc2 →  E=mc2
* for a moving object, as velocity → the speed of light [c],  y → Infinity as does the Energy

The Future? / What we know

-Based on what we know – https://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/technology/warp/ideaknow.html
-Faster-than-light : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster-than-light
-Special Theory of Relativity – Does not forbid the existence of particles that travel faster than light
-Apparent/Effective FTL : Hypothesis → unusually distorted regions of spacetime might permit matter to reach distant locations faster than it would take light in the normal or undistorted spacetime

Status of Warp Drive
https://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/technology/warp/warpstat.html
-Theories of making this happen, similar to Star Trek. Warping space around you.
-Emerging possibilities – https://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/technology/warp/possible.html

Wormholes

Alcubierre’s “Warp Drive” – the moving sidewalk / expand behind you & contract in front

Negative mass propulsion –

-Millis’s hypothetical “Space Drives” – A “space drive” can be defined as an idealized form of propulsion where the fundamental properties of matter and spacetime are used to create propulsive forces anywhere in space without having to carry and expel a reaction mass

Status on Anti-matter
https://www.nasa.gov/centers/glenn/technology/warp/antistat.html
-Antimatter is matter with its electrical charge reversed.
-Anti-electrons, called “positrons,” are like an electron but with a positive charge.
-Antiprotons are like protons with a negative charge.
-Positron, antiprotons and other antiparticles can be routinely created at particle accelerator labs
-Can even be trapped and stored for days or weeks at a time.
-And just last year, they made antihydrogen for the first time. It didn’t last long, but they did it.
-Also, Antimatter is NOT antigravity.
-Right now it would cost about One-Hundred-Billion dollars to create one milligram of antimatter
