Florida Man Arrested for Allegedly Hacking Key Linux Servers | Motherboard

A_ustin allegedly broke into several named servers, including “Odin1,” “Zeus1,” and “Pub3,” as well as Linux Kernel Organization founder Peter Anvin’s private email server, and installed the “Phalanx” rootkit—a backdoor that would allow him to connect to the infected computer and install additional software on the target—and the “Ebury” trojan, which harvested credentials of those logging into the infected computer. He also allegedly used his unauthorized administrative privileges to insert messages that would display when the servers restarted._

Austin was released from jail on payment of $50,000 in bail money, and will have to appear in court in San Francisco at 0930 on September 21 before the Honorable Sallie Kim. If found guilty, he faces a possible sentence of 40 years in prison and $2m in fines.

Surround 360 is now open source

Today we officially open-sourced the specs for Surround 360, our high-quality 3D-360 hardware and software video capture system. The open source project includes the hardware camera design and software stitching code that makes end-to-end 3D-360 video capture possible in one system — from shooting to video processing.

We believe making the camera design and stitching code freely available on GitHub will accelerate the growth of the 3D-360 ecosystem — developers will be able to leverage the code, and content creators can use the camera in their productions. Anyone will be able to contribute to, build on top of, improve, or distribute the camera based on these specs.

The fall of Open Source

The moment that Open Source becomes primarily about “my time” is the moment that Open Source is no longer a movement. It is no longer an ideology. It is no longer about fairness, freedom, equality, rights, or the greater good.

Using snap with confinement on Arch Linux

So this week I worked in order to port the apparmor patches to the linux-lts kernel so I create some AUR package in order to have confinement working.
I also had to make upstream fix some weird bugs, eventually it was a complete success and confinement works perfectly.

Fedora about to get Snapd confinement?

Last day of the Snappy Sprint and the meta topic (in the track I’m following) is the review and continuation of the community outreach. We’ve heard more from KDE about their roadmap for snaps, snapd improvements for Fedora, integrating community snaps into the +Snapcraft CI to broaden the automated testing, dogfooding snaps and Snappy Schwaag!

The Snappy Sprint in Heidelberg came to a close yesterday. Here are my thoughts…

Snaps and Fedora – devel – Fedora List Archives

I’ve left the Snappy Sprint with a clear understanding of the road ahead, an enthusiasm and commitment to be a part of the snap journey, and most importantly, some great new friendships. Keep your ear to the ground about snaps, there is certainly big news to follow in the not too distant future…

One of the key features worked on this week was Content Sharing. This is delivered via the Content Interface and is the mechanism by which “shared library” or runtime snaps are possible.

pinger-indicator

Ping Indicator is an app that shows the ping speed of various services or addresses.

The application “pings” a given set of hosts (with configurable ping interval) and monitors the response time with logarithmic scale, displaying the results in the indicator menu.

For each host, the app shows the response time as a graph in the AppIndicator icon. On packet losses, the graph turns red, as you can see in the screenshot above, for the latest entry, which doesn’t exist.

Ping Indicator is useful in many situations, including to track your latency in various areas (by adding hosts from certain areas), monitor your website latency, track when a website that went down goes back up and so on.

According to its developer, Ping Indicator still has some rough edges and unimplemented parts from the old Link Monitor Applet, and asks its users to star and watch the project on GitHub, to encourage further improvements.

Skype May Be Back on Linux

If you’re a GNU/Linux user, then you’ll be very aware at just how horrible Skype is on the platform. Not only has it not been updated since June 2014, but the Skype team at Microsoft – perhaps when they were bored – added extra hoops and complications as time went on.

Encryption on Android just got weaker

Privacy advocates take note: Android’s full-disk encryption just got dramatically easier to defeat on devices that use chips from semiconductor maker Qualcomm, thanks to new research that reveals several methods to extract crypto keys off of a locked handset. Those methods include publicly available attack code that works against an estimated 37 percent of enterprise users.

A blog post published Thursday revealed that in stark contrast to the iPhone’s iOS, Qualcomm-powered Android devices store the disk encryption keys in software. That leaves the keys vulnerable to a variety of attacks that can pull a key off a device. From there, the key can be loaded onto a server cluster, field-programmable gate array, or supercomputer that has been optimized for super-fast password cracking.

The independent researcher that published the post included exploit code that extracts the disk encryption keys by exploiting two vulnerabilities in TrustZone. TrustZone is a collection of security features within the ARM processors Qualcomm sells to handset manufacturers. By stitching together the exploits, the attack code is able to execute code within the TrustZone kernel, which is an enclave dedicated for sensitive operations such as managing cryptographic keys and protecting hardware.
A third of enterprise Android phones exploitable

Both Google and Qualcomm are quick to note that both of the vulnerabilities involved—indexed as CVE-2015-6639 and CVE-2016-2431—have since been patched. The first was patched in January while the second was patched in May. Google also pointed out that it paid the researcher for his work through the company’s bug bounty program.

But researchers from two-factor authentication service Duo Security told Ars that an estimated 37 percent of all the Android phones that use the Duo app remain susceptible to the attack because they have yet to receive the patches. The lack of updates is the result of restrictions imposed by manufacturers or carriers that prevent end users from installing updates released by Google.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS brings big changes to the Linux desktop

The Ubuntu desktop has seen very little change since Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was released two years ago. That’s about to change with today’s launch of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS—code-named “Xenial Xerus”—which brings big changes and welcome polish to the classic Unity 7 desktop.

Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS launches today with the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment.

According to the announcement, release highlights include new community wallpapers, and the replacement of the Ubuntu Software Centre app with the GNOME Software graphical package manager.

A new project leader has been elected, Set Hallström, which took over the project on April 21, 2016, the day of the official release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

“Mythbuntu 16.04 has been released. This is a point release on our 14.04 LTS release. If you are already on 14.04, you can get these same updates via the normal update process. This is our third LTS release and will be supported until shortly after the 18.04 release.,” reads the announcement.

“After a year and a half of intense work by the LXD team, LXD 2.0 has been released today! LXD 2.0 is our first production-ready release and also a Long Term Support release, meaning that we will be supporting it with frequent bugfix releases until the 1st of June 2021,” said Stéphane Graber, technical lead for LXD, Canonical.

Is This Really The Ubuntu 16.10 Codename? (Answer: It Is)

“Y is for …Yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yakkety yak. Naturally.”
