Son’s Lego Robotics Club RUNS LINUX!

9 nine year old son wanted to join the Lego Robotics club

Hey guys, I’ve got a runs Linux for you. My 9 nine year old son wanted to join the Lego Robotics club at his elementary school. Because it is a volunteer-run program, I got roped into it. I ended up actually teaching the program and have been having a great time teaching the kids how to program their Lego EV3 robots. There are 12 kids in the group and the school district was supposed to configure 6 Apple laptops with the Lego programming software for us to use. Wouldn’t you know, there were some bureaucratic issues getting the laptops set up. Luckily, since my friends and family know I like to tinker with computers, I have 6 laptops at the house, most of which had been given to me because they had issues, that I subsequently fixed. Poking around in the menus on the Lego robot, I saw that the robot ran Linux (see attached pic). Honestly, I had more than half expected they would run Linux. Imagine my dismay when I went to the Lego website to download the software to write the programs to control the robots, only to discover that the Lego software was only available for Mac and Windows! So I spent a couple of evenings updating the Windows installs on the dual boot machines, and reinstalling Windows on the Linux-only machines, and for the last 6 weeks the kids have been downloading their robot controller programs from Windows machines onto the Linux robots. So the Lego EV3 robots run Linux, and the kids have been having a blast.

Regards
Ed

International Space Station Planning for Linux

Keith Chuvala of United Space Alliance, a NASA contractor deeply involved in Space Shuttle and International Space Station (ISS) operations, decided to migrate to Linux. As leader of the Laptops and Network Integration Teams, Chuvala oversees the developers in charge of writing and integrating software for the Station’s “OpsLAN” – a network of laptops that provide the ISS crew with vital capabilities for day-to-day operations, from telling the astronauts where they are, to inventory control of the equipment used, to interfacing with the cameras that capture photos and videos.

Let’s Encrypt Public Beta: December 3, 2015

Let’s Encrypt will enter Public Beta on December 3, 2015. Once we’ve entered Public Beta our systems will be open to anyone who would like to request a certificate. There will no longer be a requirement to sign up and wait for an invitation.

Our Limited Beta started on September 12, 2015. We’ve issued over 11,000 certificates since then, and this operational experience has given us confidence that our systems are ready for an open Public Beta.

Firefox OS 2.5 Developer Preview, an experimental Android app

  • Add-ons: Just like the add-ons we’ve come to love in desktop browsers, Firefox OS add-ons can extend just one app, several, or all of them, including the system app itself.
  • Private Browsing with Tracking Protection: A new Firefox privacy feature, Tracking Protection allows users to control how their browsing activity is tracked across many sites.
  • Pin the Web: Pin the Web removes the artificial distinction between web apps and web sites and lets you pin any web site or web page to your home screen for later usage.

  • Firefox OS Preview Android App

Introducing Firefox OS 2.5 Developer Preview, an experimental app that lets you use Firefox OS on your Android device.

FCC: We aren’t banning DD-WRT on Wi-Fi routers

“We were not, but we agree that the guidance we provide to manufacturers must be crystal-clear to avoid confusion,” he wrote. “So, today we released a revision to that guidance to clarify that our instructions were narrowly focused on modifications that would take a device out of compliance.”

Fedora 22 Released, See What`s New

Fedora 22 Workstation was released today and it ships with the latest stable GNOME 3.16, a new default package manager and other interesting changes.

Torrent Server for the Fedora Project

This document provides the release notes for Fedora 22. It describes major changes offered as compared to Fedora 21. For a detailed listing of all changes, refer to the Fedora Technical Notes.

GNOME login screen doesn’t appear after installation

link to this itemBugzilla: #1218787

On certain Macbook laptops with dual graphics cards, Fedora 22 Live environment boots fine, but after installation there’s just black screen and no boot splash followed by a GNOME login screen. There seems to be an issue with Wayland, an upcoming window system, which is used in GNOME login screen.

It seems that users of affected laptops should be able to work around this issue by booting in a basic graphics mode (adding nomodeset to the boot command line in GRUB), and then editing /etc/gdm/custom.conf file and uncommenting the following line:

#WaylandEnable=false

That will disable Wayland for GNOME login screen in future boots.

Red Hat Has Another Developer Now Working On Nouveau – Phoronix

Hans de Goede in the past has mostly been known for his Linux USB contributions while one year ago he joined the Red Hat Graphics Team where he worked on the various X.Org/Wayland things and then for a while was one of the Red Hat developers working on libinput.

With the libinput work settling down, his next course of action is going to be working on Nouveau. Right now it’s not known specifically what he’ll be focusing on as he’s still learning more about GPU driver programming, but it’s great to see Red Hat providing additional resources for Nouveau. Hans shared his new Nouveau focus at Red Hat via this mailing list post introducing himself to the Nouveau community.

Google Set to Unveil Wireless Service – WSJ

Google Inc. GOOGL 0.63% is set to unveil its new U.S. wireless service as early as Wednesday, pushing the Internet giant further into telecom and injecting fresh uncertainty into a wireless industry already locked in a price war.

In a key development, the service is expected to allow customers to pay only for the amount of data they actually use each month, people familiar with the matter said—a move that could further push carriers to do away with lucrative “breakage.”

Thinking of rooting your Galaxy S6 or S6 edge? Don’t, or you’ll lose this important feature – SamMobile

If you think that Samsung Pay is of no use to you, think again. Samsung Pay debuted with the Galaxy S6, and makes use of your fingerprint to authorize payments through your smartphone at payment gateways. Just like Apple Pay you would think, but that is not the case. Samsung Pay is better than its competitors — Apple Pay and Android Pay — as it is compatible with MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) as well as NFC based payment systems.

Microsoft Announces Device Guard For Windows 10

Microsoft has announced a new feature for Windows 10 called Device Guard, which aims to give administrators full control over what software can or cannot be installed on a device. “It provides better security against malware and zero days for Windows 10 by blocking anything other than trusted apps—which are apps that are signed by specific software vendors, the Windows Store, or even your own organization. … To help protect users from malware, when an app is executed, Windows makes a determination on whether that app is trustworthy, and notifies the user if it is not. Device Guard can use hardware technology and virtualization to isolate that decision making function from the rest of the Windows operating system, which helps provide protection from attackers or malware that have managed to gain full system privilege.” It’s intended to be used in conjunction with traditional anti-virus, not as a replacement.

Star Trek 3 Will Be Titled Star Trek Beyond

Well, according to TrekMovie.com, who admittedly has a pretty good track record with Trek movie rumors. The title matches the volume-number-less installment of Star Trek Into Darkness, but seems to confirms the new Enterprise crew will finally be going on its five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, etc.

Dropbox and Microsoft form surprise partnership for Office integration | The Verge

Microsoft and Dropbox are teaming up today to more closely integrate Dropbox into Office. The surprise partnership will benefit Dropbox users who use Office across desktop, mobile, and the web as Microsoft’s productivity suite will soon become the standard way to edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files stored on Dropbox storage.

Dropbox is also adding options to its own mobile apps to push its users over to Microsoft Office to edit documents. If you’re on a mobile device that doesn’t have Office installed then you’ll be prompted to download the apps to edit, and any changes will sync back directly to Dropbox seamlessly, just as you’d expect.

In the first half of 2015 Dropbox is planning to support Office Online directly from its web app. Editing for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents will be managed through Microsoft’s Office Web Apps

Google and LG will license each other’s patents for the next decade

Samsung isn’t the only Android device maker getting cozy with Google’s patents, apparently. LG has just entered into a cross-licensing deal with Google that will let the two companies use each other’s patents (including new ones) for the next 10 years. The two sides are coy about just why they’ve forged the long-term pact, although there are few possibilities. For a start, one or both sides may simply want to borrow the other’s features — a blanket agreement eliminates the chances of lawsuits and simplifies the licensing process. There’s also a chance that Google is using the deal to guarantee that LG won’t stray too far from the official Android strategy.

The real reason Russians tore down Steve Jobs’ monument

Steve Jobs’ monument in Russia was torn down the day after CEO Tim Cook opened up about being gay last week. The incident was immediately blamed on homophobic Russians and the country’s anti-gay laws, but the school where the monument was destroyed, says that’s not actually what happened.

School officials told Russian news outlets today that the iPhone statue was removed for a reason any Apple fan can relate to: its screen was broken.

In fact, the press service for the Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies insists that it was actually notified that the statue was going to be removed the day before Tim Cook came out publicly, because its screen sensor was faulty.

Students at the college also confirmed that the giant iPhone statue wasn’t working properly, and that its removal wasn’t a result of the country’s anti-gay laws that ban promoting “non-traditional sexual relationships” to people under age 18.

Potential class action over Apple Pay launched against CVS, Rite Aid

A law firm is now looking into filing a class action suit against retailers that have blocked Apple Pay. If filed, the suit targets both CVS and Rite Aid, neither of which are Apple Pay partners and both had subsequently blocked Apple Pay from working within their respective stores. The law firm of Schubert Jonkheer & Kolbe are now looking into whether or not the actions of CVS, Rite Aid, and other Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) members may be violating antitrust laws.

Manjaro Background

About | Manjaro Linux

Manjaro is a user-friendly Linux distribution based on the independently developed Arch operating system. Within the Linux community, Arch itself is renowned for being an exceptionally fast, powerful, and lightweight distribution that provides access to the very latest cutting edge – and bleeding edge – software. However, Arch is also aimed at more experienced or technically-minded users. As such, it is generally considered to be beyond the reach of those who lack the technical expertise (or persistence) required to use it.

Developed in Austria, France, and Germany, Manjaro provides all the benefits of the Arch operating system combined with a focus on user-friendliness and accessibility. Available in both 32 and 64 bit versions, Manjaro is suitable for newcomers as well as experienced Linux users. For newcomers, a user-friendly installer is provided, and the system itself is designed to work fully ‘straight out of the box’ with features

Why Manjaro was started

When Manjaro was started, there were already many Linux distributions, a fact the team would have been aware of. So I’m betting there were some core ideas and problems Manjaro wanted to solve.

What were those core issues?

Why Arch?

Tell us about your choice to base off Arch? We see more distros doing that now, but when Manjaro started it was not that common. Debian or perhaps even Fedora might have been a more traditional choice for example.

How far away from Arch could you see Manjaro going?

In your opinion do you see a need move away from Arch further to meet the requirements of the project?

Recent Team Shake up?

The Manjaro community.

THe Manjaro community seems very vibrant, with a tight knit group on the forums and other places Manjaro users gather. It reminds me a lot of the proto-Ubuntu community. In your opinion, What are some of the unique aspect of the Manjaro project and it’s community that have attributed to this?

The Future?

What are you looking forward to for in the future of Linux, and Manjaro?

Linus Torvalds Guided Tour of His Home Office – YouTube

See inside the workspace of the world’s most famous developer, Linux creator Linus Torvalds, in this rare, personal tour.

Linux kernel developer and maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman takes on a short tour of his workspace.

Docker to be a big part of Fedora going forward, also Fedora 21’s name

Fedora in Spaaaaace

In the Fedora Cloud WG, we’re planning on producing official Fedora Docker base images — these will be produced and uploaded by Fedora Release Engineering. Right now, because Docker is a key part of the upcoming Project Atomic-based Fedora Atomic, the Cloud SIG is doing the initial work and QA, but, eventually, the plan is to hand this off to the Environments and Stacks WG, because it looks like Docker and containerization will be important across much of Fedora in the future.

This is old news to many of us, but I’ve gotten the question a few times — what will Fedora 21 be named? Well, it’ll be named “Fedora 21″, without any codename. This was decided by the Fedora Project Board last October

  • The first Fedora 21 Alpha release is scheduled for August 5th.

Google recruits top PS3 hacker for Project Zero

Geohots

You should be able to use the web without fear that a criminal or state-sponsored actor is exploiting software bugs to infect your computer, steal secrets or monitor your communications. Yet in sophisticated attacks, we see the use of “zero-day” vulnerabilities to target, for example, human rights activists or to conduct industrial espionage. This needs to stop. We think more can be done to tackle this problem.

Project Zero is our contribution, to start the ball rolling. Our objective is to significantly reduce the number of people harmed by targeted attacks. We’re hiring the best practically-minded security researchers and contributing 100% of their time toward improving security across the Internet.

We’re not placing any particular bounds on this project and will work to improve the security of any software depended upon by large numbers of people, paying careful attention to the techniques, targets and motivations of attackers. We’ll use standard approaches such as locating and reporting large numbers of vulnerabilities. In addition, we’ll be conducting new research into mitigations, exploitation, program analysis—and anything else that our researchers decide is a worthwhile investment.

Exploring the misconceptions of Linux Security

  • “There is a perception out there that Linux systems don\’t need additional security”
  • As Linux grows more and more mainstream, attacks become more prominent
  • We have already seen malware with variants targeting Linux desktop users, Flash and Java exploits with Linux payloads
  • Linux servers have been under attack for more than a decade, but these incidents are rarely publicized
  • The most common attacks are not 0day exploits against the kernel or some critical service, but compromised web applications, or plain old brute force password cracking
  • However, it is still important to keep services up to date as well (openssh, openssl, web server, mail server, etc)
  • Typical ‘best practice’ involves having firewalls, web application firewalls and intrusion detection systems. These systems cannot prevent every type of attack.
  • Firewalls generally do not help attacks against web applications, because they operate at layer 3 & 4 and can no detect an attempted exploit
  • Web Application Firewalls operate at layer 7 and inspect HTTP traffic before it is sent to the application and attempt to detect exploit or SQL injection attempts. These are limited by definitions of what is an attack, and are also often limited to providing protection for specific applications, since protecting an application generally means knows exactly what legitimate traffic will look like
  • Intrusion detection systems again rely on detecting specific patterns and are often unable to detect an attack, or detect so many false positives that the attack is buried in a report full of noise and isn’t recognized
  • Linux backdoors have become remarkably sophisticated, taking active steps to avoid detection, including falling silent when an administrator logs in, and suspending exfiltration when an interface is placed in promiscuous mode (such as when tcpdump is run)
  • Linux servers are often out of date, because most distributions do not have something similar to Microsoft’s “Patch Tuesday”. Security updates are often available more frequently, but the irregular cadence can cause operational issues. Most enterprise patch management systems do not include support for Linux, and it is often hard to tell if a Linux server is properly patched
  • “The main problem is that these system administrators think their [Linux] systems are so secure, when they haven\’t actually done anything to secure them,” David Jacoby, a senior security researcher for the Global Research and Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab said. For example, the default Linux configuration for most distributions does not restrict login attempts, Jacoby warned. Attackers can attempt to brute-force passwords by running through a list of possibilities without having to worry about locking out the account or getting disconnected from the server. This is something the administrator has to configure manually, and many don\’t, Jacoby said.

0day exploit in MS Word triggered by Outlook preview

  • Microsoft issued a warning on Monday of a new 0day exploit against MS Word being exploited in the wild
  • Microsoft has released an emergency Fix-It Solution until a proper patch can be released
  • This attack is especially bad since it doesn’t not require the victim to open the malicious email, looking at the message in Outlook’s preview mode will trigger the exploit
  • According to Microsoft’s advisory the flaw is also present in Word 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, Word Viewer and Office for Mac 2011
  • The attack uses a malicious RTF (Rich-Text file), Outlook renders RTF files with MS Word by default
  • The Fix-It solution disables automatically opening emails with RTF content with MS Word
  • This attack can also be worked around by configuring your email client to view all emails in plain-text only
  • Instructions for Office 2003, 2007 and 2010
  • Instructions for Outlook 2013
  • “The attack is very sophisticated, making use of an ASLR bypass, ROP techniques (bypassing the NX bit and DEP), shellcode, and several layers of tools designed to detect and defeat analysis”
  • The code attempts to determine if it is running in a sandbox and will fail to execute, to hamper analysis and reverse engineering
  • The exploit also checks how recently windows updates have been installed on the machine. “The shellcode will not perform any additional malicious action if there are updates installed after April, 8 2014”
  • Additional Coverage – ThreatPost

Flaw in Microsoft Office 365 allows ‘perfect crime’

  • The researchers who discovered the attack are calling it the ‘Ice Dagger’, because it left behind almost no evidence and it took months of effort by researchers and Microsoft’s Security Response Team to discover what had happened
  • in April 2013, a customer’s nodes analyzed an HTTP request that triggered a “high risk” heuristics alert
  • The request was for an MS Word document hosted on a TOR Hidden Service node (onion.to address)
  • In this case, the request to the TOR service was not made by the user, but by MS Word it self, this elevated the incident to extremely suspicious
  • “Upon reviewing the metadata of the request, we noticed that its response had a WWW-Authenticate header with RootDomain=”sharepoint.com”, even though the request obviously wasn’t for a sharepoint.com domain. At this point we started assessing the situation and treating it as a potential data theft”
  • The end user had received an email specifically addressed to them containing a link to an MS Word document hosted on the TOR Hidden service, a very specific spear phishing attack
  • When the user opened the link, it fired off the MS Office365 URL handler, ms-word:// and MS Word opened the document
  • Due to a bug in MS Word, when the malicious web server sent the same WWW-Authenticate header that Office365 would have sent, MS Word sent the user’s private SharePoint access token back to the malicious web server, even though it should only ever send that token to sharepoint.com
  • With this token, an attacker can access every document in the Office365 environment, including SharePoint and SkyDrive, completely undetected
  • The attacker can copy all of the documents and then delete them, or make subtle modifications that could prove disastrous
  • The attack comes down to a few simple steps:
  • You get a mail asking you to review a document or visit a webpage. Some ideas: Maybe a document with coupons? Someone’s CV? A price quote? A contract? Obviously at least one employee out of hundreds will read the document.
  • You click on the link. The web page asks you to open the document in Word, just like SharePoint Online asks you (shown in step 2 above). Because this dialog is so common when using SharePoint Online, it’s really hard to believe anyone will refuse the request.
  • Word is now requesting the document from the malicious webpage. The malicious webpage asks Word for its Office 365 token and Word willingly gives it. The malicious webpage gives Word a legitimate-looking document in return.
  • The attacker now has your Office 365 token. You have a document which you will shrug off as meaningless and go on with your day.
  • The researchers provided their completed research to Microsoft on May 29th, 2013
  • The patch has finally been released as part of the December Patch Tuesday MS13-104 fixes CVE-2013-5054
  • Conclusions: This was A Perfect Crime. “There was no malware payload to reverse-engineer. No file hash we can trace through time. No IP address to locate and investigate. No servers to confiscate. The attacker simply gets away with your Office 365 token. For good. This is important in the context of understanding the limitations of your existing endpoint and perimeter defenses in the context of SaaS applications and cloud services.”
  • Microsoft also patched a WinVerifyTrust signature validation vulnerability in Windows that can be used to disguise malicious applications as trustworthy, signed executables. \”Exploits targeting this vulnerability have been seen in the wild, so deploy this patch as soon as possible\”

NSA using Google cookies to pinpoint targets for attack

  • The agency\’s internal presentation slides, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, show that when companies follow consumers on the Internet to better serve them advertising, the technique opens the door for similar tracking by the government
  • The slides also suggest that the agency is using these tracking techniques to help identify targets for offensive hacking operations.
  • According to the documents, the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ, are using the small tracking files or \”cookies\” that advertising networks place on computers to identify people browsing the Internet.
  • The intelligence agencies have found particular use for a part of a Google-specific tracking mechanism known as the “PREF” cookie.
  • These cookies typically don\’t contain personal information, such as someone\’s name or e-mail address, but they do contain numeric codes that enable Web sites to uniquely identify a person\’s browser.
  • This cookie allows NSA to single out an individual\’s communications among the sea of Internet data in order to send out software that can hack that person\’s computer. The slides say the cookies are used to \”enable remote exploitation,\”
  • Separately, the NSA is also using commercially gathered information to help it locate mobile devices around the world, the documents show.
  • These specific slides do not indicate how the NSA obtains Google PREF cookies or whether the company cooperates in these programs, but other documents reviewed by the Post indicate that cookie information is among the data NSA can obtain with a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act order. If the NSA gets the data that way, the companies know and are legally compelled to assist.
  • Google assigns a unique PREF cookie anytime someone\’s browser makes a connection to any of the company\’s Web properties or services. This can occur when consumers directly use Google services such as Search or Maps, or when they visit Web sites that contain embedded \”widgets\” for the company\’s social media platform Google Plus. That cookie contains a code that allows Google to uniquely track users to \”personalize ads\” and measure how they use other Google products.
  • Another slide indicates that the NSA is collecting location data transmitted by mobile apps to support ad-targeting efforts in bulk. The NSA program, code-named HAPPYFOOT, helps the NSA to map Internet addresses to physical locations more precisely than is possible with traditional Internet geolocation services.

British “Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit” attempts to censor the global Internet

  • We have covered a bit of this story in the past, but it seems to be getting worse, and we have a lot more detail now
  • “Today, a special police unit can decide that a certain website needs to disappear from the Internet, and threaten its domain name registrar into revoking the address “until further notice”, without any legal basis whatsoever.”
  • The PIPCU is claiming success in it’s Operation Creative, a three month campaign where they improperly seized the 40 domains they accused of copyright infringement. Some of the sites were shut down, while some simply moved to a different domain
  • The owners of the 40 domains, nor their registrars or web hosts were ever served with a court order
  • How the PIPCU works:
  • Investigators who work at notorious copyright trolls such as BPI (British Phonographic Industry) and FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft) scour the Internet, looking for websites that share copyrighted content
  • They then forward this ‘intelligence’ to the PIPCU, which then decides whether or not it will attempt to take down the site.
  • The PIPCU will ask a network of over 60 advertisers to stop placing banners and bankrolling a pirate resource
  • Finally, after a certain period of time, the PIPCU will send a letter to the site’s registrar, asking it to suspend the domain name. Instead of a court order, this peculiar document refers to an outdated section of ICANN’s Registrar Accreditation Agreement, which states that such accreditation can be terminated if the organisation is found to have ‘permitted illegal activity in the registration or use of domain names’.
  • This scare tactic causes many registrars to suspend the domains, rather than risking their entire business by losing their ability to register new domains
  • One registrar has decided to stick up for its users, and the rest of the internet
  • EasyDNS posted the notice on their blog
  • Specifically “We have an obligation to our customers and we are bound by our Registrar Accreditation Agreements not to make arbitrary changes to our customers settings without a valid FOA (Form of Authorization). To supersede that we need a legal basis. To get a legal basis something has to happen in court”
  • Registrars are not ALLOWED to seize a domain without a legal basis. Registrars that complied with the shakedown may actually be in violation of ICANN policies
  • One customer who had their domain seized at another registrar then attempted to move to EasyDNS, however the ‘losing’ registrar, in violation of ICANN policy’, refused to release the domain
  • So EasyDNS requested that Verisign, the operators of the .com and .net registries, make a ruling and release the domain. However Verisign rendered a decision of ‘no decision’
  • Verisign’s reason for no decision? The losing registrar did not provide the requested documentation
  • EasyDNS has appealed the decision with ICANN and we are watching for further developments

The Dream Turns to a Nightmare:

The central conflict of domestic life right now isn\’t men versus women or mothers versus fathers; it\’s the family against money.

Achieving the elusive \”work-life balance\” can often feel like an impossible goal, especially for people who strive to give everything 100%. In today\’s \”do more with less\” competitive reality, how can we manage careers and families, and feel satisfied with both?

Expectations

The main problem with working from home is everyone\’s expectations.

  • your expectations* your family and friends expectations* your clients\’/ employer\’s expectations.

However, since more and more people have switched to working at home, there are still some wrinkles to be ironed out with respect to the general public\’s expectations.

Follow Up:

Apple has been slowly restoring their Developer Center, and today the company has sent out an email update to developers regarding the restorations to take place this week:

We sincerely appreciate your patience as we work to bring our developer program services back online, and we want to give you an update on our progress. The majority of our developer services are currently online, including Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, Dev Centers, software downloads, Videos, Apple Developer Forums, iTunes Connect, Bug Reporter, App Store Resource Center, and access to pre-release documentation.

We plan to reinstate most of the remaining services this week: Xcode automatic configuration as well as access to license agreements, TSIs, program enrollments, and renewals in Member Center. You can check the availability of these systems on our status page.

As a reminder, if your membership was set to expire during this downtime, it has been extended and your apps will remain on the App Store and Mac App Store.

We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused and encourage you to reach out to our support team if you need any assistance.
