Apple has lost the functional high ground – Marco.org

Apple’s hardware today is amazing — it has never been better. But the software quality has taken such a nosedive in the last few years that I’m deeply concerned for its future. I’m typing this on a computer whose existence I didn’t even think would be possible yet, but it runs an OS riddled with embarrassing bugs and fundamental regressions. Just a few years ago, we would have relentlessly made fun of Windows users for these same bugs on their inferior OS, but we can’t talk anymore.

Microsoft is building a new browser as part of its Windows 10 push

Spartan is still going to use Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine and Microsoft’s Trident rendering engine (not WebKit), sources say. As Neowin’s Brad Sams reported back in September, the coming browser will look and feel more like Chrome and Firefox and will support extensions.

Sams also reported on December 29 that Microsoft has two different versions of Trident in the works, which also seemingly supports the claim that the company has two different Trident-based browsers.

However, if my sources are right, Spartan is not IE 12. Instead, Spartan is a new, light-weight browser Microsoft is building.

The Story of Clementine OS

The developer of Pear OS has posted on Google+ that the Mac-like Linux distribution has been sold to another company and can no longer be downloaded.

The developer received a letter from an American company that forced him to abandon the project. He later said that it was not Apple, but another major company. He could not disclose its name, however.

elementary OS Luna Review

System76

Brought to you by: System76

In April of 2011, a small group of high school and college kids released an Ubuntu 10.10 remaster that we called elementary OS “Jupiter”.

It was clear from the get-go that Luna would be all about getting things done, and a major component of that is apps that open and close instantly. But aside from optimizing the code, there was a push to optimize speed on the design side as well.

After elementary OS Luna has been officially released, a surge of new eOS users has arrived, and we are here to help. Everyone, including me, loves a “Top Things To Do After Installing…” list, so let’s get you started.

Settings and configuration for the different components of our computers is typically scattered amongst many disjointed, disparate, stand-alone applications with different user interfaces and behavior.

Switchboard solves this problem by enforcing coherency with regard to interface and behavior, and by automatically organizing the different configuration options into one unified and central location.

Switchboard is meant to provide a place for global configuration settings, such as power options, device syncing, or third-party hardware.

Dev World Hoopla

In an email to developers today, Apple revealed that its Developer Center website was breached by unknown hackers and was taken offline last Thursday as a precaution.

\”This is definitely not an hack attack. I have reported all the bugs I have found to the company and waited for approval. I am being accused of hacking but I have not given any harm to the system and i did notwanted to damage [sic],\” writes the user Ibrahim Baliç.

He has since told the Guardian, \”My intention was not attacking. In total I found 13 bugs and reported [them] directly one by one to Apple straight away. Just after my reporting [the] dev center got closed. I have not heard anything from them, and they announced that they got attacked. My aim was to report bugs and collect the datas [sic] for the purpose of seeing how deep I can go with it.\”

\”In essence, with Firefox OS, we made app discovery as easy as browsing the web, and we give you a very good reason to brush up the mobile optimised web sites you already have on the web,\” writes Mozillan Chris Heilmann on the company blog.

In the car industry, Formula 1 provides a commercial testbed for cutting-edge technologies. The Ubuntu Edge project aims to do the same for the mobile phone industry — to provide a low-volume, high-technology platform, crowdfunded by enthusiasts and mobile computing professionals.

Your Own Linux Chat Server

System76

Brought to you by: System76

Prosody is a modern flexible communications server for Jabber/XMPP written in Lua. It aims to be easy to set up and configure, and light on resources.

In the midst of the major press blitz surrounding its annual I/O Conference, Google dropped some unfortunate news about its instant messaging plans. In several places around the web, the company is replacing the existing “Talk” platform with a new one called “Hangouts” that sharply diminishes support for the open messaging protocol known as XMPP (or sometimes informally Jabber), and also removes the option to disable the archiving of all chat communications. These changes represent a switch from open protocols to proprietary ones, and a clear step backward for many users.

I setup a Raspberry Pi Model B as an XMPP server running MUC.

Full Featured XMPP Client:

Super Easy LAN Chat:

Android

Source code of Xabber is available at https://github.com/redsolution/xabber-android under GNU GPLv3 license.

A free, secure and complete XMPP Server (also called a Jabber Server). The app supports SSL/TLS, multiple users and can be set to automatically start the server when your device is connected to a specific WIFI network!
