But more specifically: Bin Laden’s library was the equivalent of an Internet conspiracy theorist’s browser history. There was a print out of a weird article about a card game that was said to have predicted the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He had an e-book about voter fraud conspiracies from BlackBoxVoting.org. He had books documenting the fringes of American politics. He had a 1928 book called “The Secret Teaching of All Ages” that details various aspects of forgotten religions and the occult; he had a book unveiling “The Secrets of the Federal Reserve.” And, like a rebellious teenager, he checked out the official government material on MK ULTRA, the CIA’s mind control efforts during the Cold War.

The bookshelf contains a number of letters, too (letters once upon a time served a function similar to e-mail). There’s a paper job application, which includes — and I am not making this up — an emergency contact request: “Who should we contact in case you became a martyr?” Oh, my wife, here’s her cell.

UBS will pay a total of $545m to US authorities to settle allegations that arose in an investigation into the rigging of foreign exchange and Libor benchmarks. The Swiss bank will be hoping the payment draws a line under multiple trading scandals lasting several years. The fine, much lower than expected, includes a $342m Federal Reserve penalty related to forex activities, the bank said in a statement on Wednesday. It will not be paying a fine on forex to the Department of Justice and will not face criminal charges on the matter.

OBAMA SET TO SPEED ARMS SHIPMENTS, TRAINING FOR IRAQ TRIBES

US President Barack Obama is poised to quicken the pace of weapons supplies and training to Iraqi tribes, while eyeing a rapid offensive to recapture Ramadi from the Islamic State group.

Obama huddled Tuesday with his national security team at the White House to plot a way forward after the loss of a strategically vital town on the steps of the capital Baghdad.

Following the meeting — which included the heads of the CIA and Pentagon, National Security Council staff and Secretary of State John Kerry via secure phone link — officials indicated Obama was ready to ramp up assistance to Sunni tribes that dominate the province around Ramadi.

“We are looking at how best to support local ground forces in Anbar” National Security Council spokesman Alistair Baskey told AFP, “including accelerating the training and equipping of local tribes and supporting an Iraqi-led operation to retake Ramadi.”
