Your marvelous container powered future, what happens when your favorite open source project takes its ball and goes closed source? Subsonic is going closed source, we discuss alternative options, how we feel as donors & the bigger picture in all of this.

Hands on with the HTC Vive under Linux, DuckDuckGo supporting their favorite open source, the goals for Ubuntu 16.10 & much more!

DuckDuckGo Blog : Our 2016 Open Source Donations

Thank you all for the nominations for our 2016 open source donations program. As usual, there was a wide variety of projects that could benefit from additional funding and fit the theme of raising the standard of trust online. We try to make this a joint effort with the commuity and you didn’t disappoint! Hear Gabriel, the founder of DuckDuckGo, announce this year’s recipients

Ubuntu 16.10 Isn’t Going To Use Mir / Unity 8 By Default – Phoronix

Similar to the current situation with existing Ubuntu releases, Unity 8 and Mir will be available as an opt-in feature for users wanting to upgrade their desktop, but Unity 7 and the faithful X.Org Server is planned to be the default for Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak.

Plasma Mobile : New base system… Ubuntu Touch?

Our initial Ubuntu Touch base was Ubuntu 15.04. Eventually, our image started to diverge from the Ubuntu Touch base. For example, we upgraded _libhybris to upstream version_because libhybris available in Ubuntu archive diverged too much from upstream to be useful in our context. We also had to upgrade to a newer Qt version, and we also needed to upgrade the base system to Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) because we did not have the resources for managing different branches for packaging the latest git KF5/Plasma for 15.04.

OpenWRT Gets Forked By Some Of Its Own Developers As LEDE Project – Phoronix

LEDE will continue to focus upon being “a great embedded Linux distribution” with predictable release cycles and transparent decision making. Among the stated reasons for this “reboot of the OpenWRT community” is that the active core developer count was low, unreliable infrastructure, lack of communication and coordination around the project, not enough people with commit access, and lack of focus on stability and documentation.

Your power management system?

I am starting to play with the power management of my computers running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (might downgrade but sticking with it for now) and I wanted to know what everyone’s choice for Power Management is, I am looking at powertop but I don’t know how well it will work.

Subsonic (music streaming software) is no longer open source, starting with 6.0 release

Sorry, no. Starting with 6.0, Subsonic is no longer open-source (the source code for older versions is still available).

The main reason for this change is that the source contains some software license codes I have purchased and that shouldn’t be used by forked projects.

Dev Hoopla: .NET Goes Open Source

.NET Foundation – Announcing new governance model and project contributions to the .NET Foundation

Microsoft is making headlines today for its decision to open source its popular .NET development stack, which will now be maintained under the stewardship of the .NET Foundation. This should be welcome news to the millions of developers who use .NET to build high quality applications and services that can scale from needs of individual developers to large enterprises.

As part of its announcement last spring, Microsoft released .NET code to the open source community. Today’s news builds onto that, as Microsoft aims to further make .NET Core available across platforms for Linux and Mac. The company will open source additional key .NET platform components through the foundation.

Today, Scott Guthrie announced that Microsoft is open sourcing .NET. This is a momentous occasion, and one that I have advocated for many years.

.NET is being open sourced under the MIT license. Not only is the code being released under this very permissive license, but Microsoft is providing a patent promise to ensure that .NET will get the adoption it deserves.

The code is being hosted at the .NET Foundation’s github repository.

This patent promise addresses the historical concerns that the open source, Unix and free software communities have raised over the years.

There are three components being open sourced: the .NET Framework Libraries, .NET Core Framework Libraries and the RyuJit VM. More details below.

Data Protection in the Cloud

\”To be told four to six hours, and then just wait and wait and wait and nothing\’s happening for three days, was beyond frustrating and maddening,\” she said. Flores also said she noticed a difference in the way Amazon worked with large sites compared to smaller ones.

\”A few days ago we sent you an email letting you know that we were working on recovering an inconsistent data snapshot of one or more of your Amazon EBS volumes,\” says the letter, quoted in the BI piece. \”We are very sorry, but ultimately our efforts to manually recover your volume were unsuccessful. The hardware failed in such a way that we could not forensically restore the data.\”

Microsoft has collaborated closely with US intelligence services to allow users\’ communications to be intercepted, including helping the National Security Agency to circumvent the company\’s own encryption, according to top-secret documents obtained by the Guardian.

The files provided by Edward Snowden illustrate the scale of co-operation between Silicon Valley and the intelligence agencies over the last three years. They also shed new light on the workings of the top-secret Prism program, which was disclosed by the Guardian and the Washington Post last month.

The documents show that:

• Microsoft helped the NSA to circumvent its encryption to address concerns that the agency would be unable to intercept web chats on the new Outlook.com portal;

• The agency already had pre-encryption stage access to email on Outlook.com, including Hotmail;

• The company worked with the FBI this year to allow the NSA easier access via Prism to its cloud storage service SkyDrive, which now has more than 250 million users worldwide;

• Microsoft also worked with the FBI\’s Data Intercept Unit to \”understand\” potential issues with a feature in Outlook.com that allows users to create email aliases;

• In July last year, nine months after Microsoft bought Skype, the NSA boasted that a new capability had tripled the amount of Skype video calls being collected through Prism;

• Material collected through Prism is routinely shared with the FBI and CIA, with one NSA document describing the program as a \”team sport\”.

\”When we upgrade or update products legal obligations may in some circumstances require that we maintain the ability to provide information in response to a law enforcement or national security request,\” Microsoft said in its statement Thursday.

As put by Michael Larabel at phoronix.com

Valve’s next-gen Linux console. This Linux-based console for the living room that’s designed around Steam is going to be huge. This is one of the most exciting milestones to look forward to for Linux as a whole in 2013. Like earlier Phoronix Valve exclusives, you can believe it now or wait and be surprised later, but this is the most exciting piece of Linux hardware that we should see in 2013. It’s exciting on so many different levels as you’ll see and is a huge growth opportunity for Linux.

Noted by Jay Lyman, at LinuxInsider

OpenStack also represents the latest Linux battleground, with Red Hat, SUSE and Canonical all vying to support enterprise deployments. Linux is a big part of cloud computing – not only technically, but also culturally, and in conversations between vendors and customers.
