“The virtual currency Bitcoin lost 21 per cent of its value yesterday, equating to a total loss this year of 44 per cent. Reports have suggested that this rapid fall is squeezing computer supporting systems and is raising alarm about its future viability. Bitcoin’s value fell to $179.37, 85 per cent lower than its record peak of $1,165 at the end of 2013. In total, nearly $11.3bn has been lost in Bitcoin’s value since its 2013 high. The decline has raised concern for Bitcoin ‘miners’ who support the transactions made in the digital currency, and whose profits become squeezed as its price falls against traditional currencies.”

CryptoWall is a sophisticated ransomware program that encrypts the victims’ files with a strong cryptographic algorithm. Users are asked to pay the equivalent of $500 in bitcoin virtual currency in order to receive the decryption key that allows them to recover their files.

There’s a Problem In the Silk Road Trial: the Jury Doesn’t Get the Internet – Slashdot

“The trial began this week for Ross Ulbricht, the 30-year-old Texas man accused of being the mastermind behind the dark net drug market, Silk Road. But as the jury began hearing testimony in the case, it was clear the technological knowledge gap would impede the proceedings. Judge Katherine Forrest said right off the bat when the case began that “highly technical” issues must be made clear to the jury. “If I believe things are not understandable to the average juror, we will talk about what might be a reasonable way to proceed at that time,” she said. After the first day of proceedings, Forrest told the prosecution to be more clear with explanations of concepts central to the case, noting she was unhappy with its “mumbo-jumbo” explanation of the anonymizing service Tor. She also requested all readings of chat transcripts include emoticons.”

Errata Security: Obama’s War on Hackers

In next week’s State of the Union address, President Obama will propose new laws against hacking that could make either retweeting or clicking on the above link illegal. The new laws make it a felony to intentionally access unauthorized information even if it’s been posted to a public website. The new laws make it a felony to traffic in information like passwords, where “trafficking” includes posting a link.

Sony hack: Studio Tries to Disrupt Downloads of its Stolen Files | Re/code

The company is using hundreds of computers in Asia to execute what’s known as a denial of service attack on sites where its pilfered data is available, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter.

Sony is using Amazon Web Services, the Internet retailer’s cloud computing unit, which operates data centers in Tokyo and Singapore, to carry out the counterattack, one of the sources said. The tactic was once commonly employed by media companies to combat Internet movie and music piracy.

BitTorrent Inc Works on P2P Powered Browser | TorrentFreak

BitTorrent Inc, the company behind the popular file-sharing client uTorrent, is working on a P2P powered browser. Dubbed Project Maelstrom, the browser will be able to “keep the Internet open” by serving websites with help from other users.

Project Maelstrom, as it’s called, is in the very early stages of development but BitTorrent Inc. is gearing up to send out invites for a closed Alpha test.

“It works on top of the BitTorrent protocol. Websites are published as torrents and Maelstrom treats them as first class citizens instead of just downloadable content. So if a website is contained within a torrent we treat it just like a normal webpage coming in over HTTP.”

US Navy approves first laser weapon for operation aboard Persian gulf ship | Ars Technica

On Wednesday the Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced that it would approve an experimental laser weapon for use on the USS Ponce in the Persian Gulf. The laser weapon system is part of a $40-million research program to test directed energy weapons, and it is the first to be officially deployed and operated on a naval vessel.

Although the laser weapon system is not as powerful as other weapons aboard the Ponce, Christopher Harmer, Senior Naval Analyst with the Institute for the Study of War told the Wall Street Journal that the directed energy of the laser aimed at a target would “cause a chemical and physical disruption in the structural integrity of that target.” Harmer added that the advantage of the laser weapon system is that it can disable many oncoming targets without needing to reload ammunition: “as long as you’ve got adequate power supply, and adequate cooling supply.”

The laser shot doesn’t look like the photon torpedoes of Star Trek—in fact it looks like nothing at all. The energy beam is invisible (and costs the Navy $0.59 per shot, according to the WSJ). A press release from ONR stated that the laser weapon system was able to hit targets out of the sky and at sea in high winds, heat, and humidity without fail.

LastPass Now Lets You Change Loads of Passwords at Once

Now when you use the password manager, you’ll see an option to change your password automatically below your login info for each site.

Currently, the service supports over 75 accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and Dropbox. Rather than going through a cloud network, LastPass says these changes happen locally on your device, so the company never have access to your actual password.

As well as tracking the increasing complexity of the ever-evolving kernel over a series of releases from versions 3.0 to 3.10

The report also reveals who is contributing code, and the dominant role corporations now play in what began as an all-volunteer project in 1991.

Over 80 percent of code is contributed by people who are paid for their work

The Linux Foundation notes that contributions have been increasing from companies that make mobile and embedded systems, such as Linaro, Samsung, and Texas Instruments.
Contributions from individual developers must have sign-offs before being incorporated into the official kernel code.

Corporate employees truly dominate, with just over 5 percent of approvals by volunteers.

The increasing size of the Linux kernel is due to the incorporation of significant new features, including a file system optimized for solid-state drives and support for the 64-bit ARM microprocessors used in embedded and mobile devices.

Chrome and Firefox already support WebRTC, which together account for 58% of global browser usage (according to StatCounter). IE and Safari will likely add support soon. You Need a Server, but You’ve Got Options

• What codecs to use

• Which security keys to use

• The network route to take (behind a NAT, direct, etc)

• Server can be: Websockets, Google Cloud Message, XHR

• Protocol can be lots of things, like: JSON, SIP, XMPP

• That setups up the p2p link between the WebRTC sessions.

• STUN: WebRTC Uses a STUN Server so WebRTC clients can figure out their public IP from behind a NAT.

• TURN: WebRTC uses a TURN server to provide a cloud fallback if p2p fails. Uses server bandwidth for the relay, but makes the call work in almost every environment.

• WebRTC uses ICE to get the direct IP and at the same time spool up the TURN server, and then makes a decision as to which can be used.

• Prefers STUN for direct p2p.

• Fixing Bitcoin\’s shaky exchange infrastructure

That means bitcoin exchanges like Tradehill would have to register as a money transmitter with the federal government. That is the easy part, says Kenna, requiring little more than a single page form. The hard part is getting the relevant licence in each US state. They all have different rules, and some (sources single out New York and California) are particularly difficult.

Time (at least a little of it) is on Tradehill\’s side, however. Even though the FinCEN guidance came into immediate effect, it only applies to businesses 180 days after they begin trading in bitcoin. This gives it until mid-September to get its paperwork in order.

• Don\’t trust anonymous e-currencies like Bitcoin

In the real world, if you lose your credit card, checkbook, or even bank account log-on password, your money isn\’t gone. In fact there are lots of services and laws to protect you and your money. Ultimately, most e-currencies possess the security of whatever your email address and password is. If hackers break into your computer, learn your password — or even break in and steal all your money at the bank — it will be replaced fairly quickly. This is absolutely not true of e-currency sites.

I\’m not saying that e-currency schemes are evil. And I\’m not saying fiat money is perfectly trusted or protected — the runaway inflation that led to wheelbarrows of money being exchanged in Weimar Germany come to mind. I\’m just saying that by comparison, over the long run, there is no comparison. The trust equation isn\’t even close.

Matt’s Howto:

Despite valiant attempts in making the iPhone music compatible with distros such as Ubuntu (or Linux distros in general), libimobiledevice has met with limited success in music syncing. Worse yet, Ubuntu One music sync isn’t quite stable enough to use on a regular basis yet. Therefore during the segment I made two very different recommendations – either buy an Android phone (best). Of if you’re in a contract like I am, consider buying a great MP3 player such as one from iRiver or Sandisk. If however, you want an MP3 player that is in fact, using Apple tech. Then I’d suggest you head over to eBay and look for this query: “ipod a1199”. Buy it at auction, you can get this for a great price.

So how does one make this work? If you remember from the segment, I recommend using Gparted to make sure the iPod is completely wiped. But follow these directions to make sure you don’t delete something needed, like a hidden partition.

1) Plugin the iPod to your computer, close any software or dialogs that appear.
2) Assuming you have gparted already installed, run the program.
3) Don’t worry about deleting your active partitions, as they will be locked. But if you run a dual-boot PC, be mindful before deleting anything.
4) Look to the upper right, select the /dev/ pull down menu. You will be selecting the dev device with the least amount of space. In my case, it was 1.89 GiB.
5) You will see either two or three partitions available, one of them is FAT32. Ignoring the others, select the FAT32 partition.
6) With the FAT32 partition right clicked and selected, choose unmount. This frees up the partition for changes.
7) Right click the partition again, and select format to> FAT32.
8) Click the apply button - aka the green checkmark at the top of the menu. Then click apply.
9) Disconnect the iPod, then allow the iPod to reboot itself. When completed, it will appear with a dialog asking you to choose your default language.
10) Now plug the iPod back into the PC.
11) Choose to open the iPod with Banshee.
12) On the bottom left, you will see the device has appeared. As per the segment, you can right click it and give it a better name if you like.
13) Left clicking on the device, the main screen dialog presents you with the option of setting up how the sync preferences work. 
I recommend keeping things set to manual. This simply means the checkbox for Sync when first plugged in, remains unchecked.
14) Select the music sync preference, then choose one of the following:

Sync from entire library – if you want all songs synced. This most likely, will not include existing playlists.

or

Sync from “some playlist name” – this will include only the music from the selected playlist.

With the option selected, look to the upper right, then click on Sync. During this process, don’t disconnect.

Problem solving:

“Wow Matt, that was awesome! I just hosed my iPod and it’s not disconnecting! It’s frozen at 23%. ”

Answer:

Don’t worry, just unplug it and use Gparted to reset the iPod as described above. No harm no foul.

Remember, I recommend using a Linux friendly device like an Android phone or even better, one of the Sandisk/iRiver devices above. They offer less frustration with Apple specific databases. But using an older iPod nano like this is a cheaper alternative.
