• U.S. Weaponry Is Turning Syria Into Proxy War With Russia – The New York Times

CIA Weapons now flooding into Syria since Russian support began.

The American-made TOW antitank missiles began arriving in the region in 2013, through a covert program run by the United States, Saudi Arabia and other allies to help certain C.I.A.-vetted insurgent groups battle the Syrian government.
The weapons are delivered to the field by American allies, but the United States approves their destination. That suggests that the newly steady battlefield supply has at least tacit American approval, now that Russian air power is backing President Bashar al-Assad.
“By bombing us, Russia is bombing the 13 ‘Friends of Syria’ countries,” he said, referring to the group of the United States and its allies that called for the ouster of Mr. Assad after his crackdown on political protests in 2011.

The C.I.A. program that delivered the TOWs (an acronym for tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided missiles) is separate from — and significantly larger than — the failed $500 million Pentagon program that was canceled last week after it trained only a handful of fighters. That was unsuccessful largely because few recruits would agree to its goal of fighting only the militant Islamic State and not Mr. Assad.

Rebel commanders scoffed when asked about reports of the delivery of 500 TOWs from Saudi Arabia, saying it was an insignificant number compared with what is available. Saudi Arabia in 2013 ordered more than 13,000 of them. Given that American weapons contracts require disclosure of the “end user,” insurgents said they were being delivered with Washington’s approval.

Dropbox and Microsoft form surprise partnership for Office integration | The Verge

Microsoft and Dropbox are teaming up today to more closely integrate Dropbox into Office. The surprise partnership will benefit Dropbox users who use Office across desktop, mobile, and the web as Microsoft’s productivity suite will soon become the standard way to edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files stored on Dropbox storage.

Dropbox is also adding options to its own mobile apps to push its users over to Microsoft Office to edit documents. If you’re on a mobile device that doesn’t have Office installed then you’ll be prompted to download the apps to edit, and any changes will sync back directly to Dropbox seamlessly, just as you’d expect.

In the first half of 2015 Dropbox is planning to support Office Online directly from its web app. Editing for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents will be managed through Microsoft’s Office Web Apps

Google and LG will license each other’s patents for the next decade

Samsung isn’t the only Android device maker getting cozy with Google’s patents, apparently. LG has just entered into a cross-licensing deal with Google that will let the two companies use each other’s patents (including new ones) for the next 10 years. The two sides are coy about just why they’ve forged the long-term pact, although there are few possibilities. For a start, one or both sides may simply want to borrow the other’s features — a blanket agreement eliminates the chances of lawsuits and simplifies the licensing process. There’s also a chance that Google is using the deal to guarantee that LG won’t stray too far from the official Android strategy.

Steve Jobs’ monument in Russia was torn down the day after CEO Tim Cook opened up about being gay last week. The incident was immediately blamed on homophobic Russians and the country’s anti-gay laws, but the school where the monument was destroyed, says that’s not actually what happened.

School officials told Russian news outlets today that the iPhone statue was removed for a reason any Apple fan can relate to: its screen was broken.

In fact, the press service for the Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies insists that it was actually notified that the statue was going to be removed the day before Tim Cook came out publicly, because its screen sensor was faulty.

Students at the college also confirmed that the giant iPhone statue wasn’t working properly, and that its removal wasn’t a result of the country’s anti-gay laws that ban promoting “non-traditional sexual relationships” to people under age 18.

Potential class action over Apple Pay launched against CVS, Rite Aid

A law firm is now looking into filing a class action suit against retailers that have blocked Apple Pay. If filed, the suit targets both CVS and Rite Aid, neither of which are Apple Pay partners and both had subsequently blocked Apple Pay from working within their respective stores. The law firm of Schubert Jonkheer & Kolbe are now looking into whether or not the actions of CVS, Rite Aid, and other Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) members may be violating antitrust laws.

Google Now for businesses reportedly on the table as HP chases a Google partnership

Google and HP have been discussing an enterprise partnership for the past year with little progress made, according to a new report. Topics have included a “Nexus tablet” with hardware encryption, as well as a version of Google Now for business data.

In fact, the report says that HP had also talked to Apple about a “Siri for enterprise,” which was nixed when the IBM deal was announced.

So Google needs to respond soon or businesses could find themselves locked into the iOS ecosystem before Android has its enterprise act together. HP is a potential partner with connections in the business IT market, and a Google Now for business data would be a feature that Apple couldn’t match. Details of its implementation are unclear at this point, as it’s not an official product, but would center around voice searches for information like financial data or product inventory. This raises several questions about whether Google would need access to data from businesses’ proprietary, private databases.

Meanwhile, HP is working on its own mobile voice search, which it is internally calling “Enterprise Siri.” It’s perhaps not the best sign for a product in development when its codename refers to the rival service it is copying.

HP Wanted To Make A Nexus Phone For Enterprise | Digital Trends

HP reportedly wanted to partner with Google to make a Nexus smartphone specifically aimed at business users. It would have incorporated several business-centric features, such as the ability to add high-end encryption. However, HP encountered internal resistance from Google, in particular from Andy Rubin, who was in charge of Android. Rubin was replaced by Sundar Pichai in March 2013

AT&T will send LTE media broadcasts to your phone in 2015

Verizon may be the first out of the gate with LTE-based media broadcasting in the US, but it won’t be the only game in town. AT&T’s John Stankey has revealed that his carrier will have its own Multicast service sometime in 2015. It’ll first launch in areas where AT&T can start immediately, but it should expand as the provider gets comfortable with both the technology and content partners.

Meet MonsterMind, the NSA Bot That Could Wage Cyberwar Autonomously | Threat Level | WIRED

The NSA whistleblower says the agency is developing a cyber defense system that would instantly and autonomously neutralize foreign cyberattacks against the US, and could be used to launch retaliatory strikes as well. The program, called MonsterMind, raises fresh concerns about privacy and the government’s policies around offensive digital attacks.

Snowden tells WIRED in an extensive interview with James Bamford that algorithms would scour massive repositories of metadata and analyze it to differentiate normal network traffic from anomalous or malicious traffic. Armed with this knowledge, the NSA could instantly and autonomously identify, and block, a foreign threat.

Think of it as a digital version of the Star Wars initiative President Reagan proposed in the 1980s.

Snowden suggests MonsterMind could one day be designed to return fire—automatically, without human intervention—against the attacker.

Spotting malicious attacks in the manner Snowden describes would, he says, require the NSA to collect and analyze all network traffic flows in order to design an algorithm that distinguishes normal traffic flow from anomalous, malicious traffic.

“[T]hat means we have to be intercepting all traffic flows,” Snowden told WIRED’s James Bamford. “That means violating the Fourth Amendment, seizing private communications without a warrant, without probable cause or even a suspicion of wrongdoing. For everyone, all the time.”

MonsterMind sounds much like the Plan X cyberwarfare program run by Darpa. The five-year, $110 million research program has several goals, not the least of which is mapping the entire internet and identifying every node to help the Pentagon spot, and disable, targets if needed. Another goal is building a system that allows the Pentagon to conduct speed-of-light attacks using predetermined and pre-programmed scenarios. Such a system would be able to spot threats and autonomously launch a response, the Washington Post reported two years ago.

It’s not clear if Plan X is MonsterMind or if MonsterMind even exists. The Post noted at the time that Darpa would begin accepting proposals for Plan X that summer. Snowden said MonsterMind was in the works when he left his work as an NSA contractor last year.

Apple and IBM Team Up For Major Enterprise Mobility Partnership

IBM will begin selling iOS devices to its corporate customers and will also create more than 100 industry-specific native apps that are built from the ground up for the iPhone and the iPad. IBM will provide cloud services optimized for iOS as well, with capabilities like device management, security, analytics, and mobile integration.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Apple began speaking with IBM a couple of years ago about possible partnerships, and the enterprise arena is where the two companies felt they could come together. “It takes the best of Apple and the best of IBM and it puts those together,” he said. “There’s no overlap, no competition, they’re totally complementary, and more than anything, it focuses on the enterprise customer.”

IBM’s first apps, tailored specifically to various industries like retail, healthcare, banking, travel, transportation, and more, will be coming this fall, with additional apps following in 2015. The company also has plans to roll out its MobileFirst Platform for iOS, with benefits like analytics, cloud storage, fleet-scale device management, a private app catalog, and data and transaction security services.

Google+ rescinds real-name mandate

In an anonymously written Google+ post, the company explained the reversal saying that while the former policy “helped create a community made up of real people,” it also reduced the participation of people who were not comfortable using their real names on the social network. As Google tied Google+ deeper into many of its services, including YouTube comments and its user accounts, the policy became an increasingly divisive issue.

At the time of Google+’s launch, Chief Executive Eric Schmidt supported the move by telling CNBC, “If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”

Vic Gundotra, the former Google+ chief, staunchly defended the social network but he left the company earlier this year. At the time of Google+’s launch, he likened the restriction to a restaurant that “doesn’t allow people who aren’t wearing shirts to enter.”

Unity Looking To Expand Linux Game Pad Support In Unity 5

Unity Linux developer Levi Bard has reached out to ask the community for help in gathering a comprehensive list of game pad mappings.

Unity 5 will be supporting SDL style mappings, which should make it easier for developers to make use of existing work that’s out there in the community. It will also be supporting SDL_GAMECONTROLLERCONFIG, which amongst other things is used by Steam Big Picture mode to communicate its game pad bindings to games.

3D-printed cadavers revolutionise anatomical education – CNET

The kit consists of all the major body parts required to learn the anatomy of the limbs, chest, abdomen, head and neck — all without containing any actual human body parts.

The 3D Printed Anatomy Series is created from real humans. First, the team performed scans, either X-ray CT scans or surface scans. These scans are then used to create a printable 3D model of the body parts, which are then sent to a high-resolution 3D printer and printed either in full colour in a plaster-like powder or plastic.

Japanese artist cuffed for disseminating 3D ladyparts files • The Register

A Japanese artist has been arrested for disseminating “3D printable design files” of her own genitalia, 3DPrint.com reports.

Megumi Igarashi, 42, was cuffed by Tokyo Metropolitan Police for allegedly supplying virtual ladyparts via email to a “30-year-old man in Kagawa Prefecture” and “many others” back in March.

Igarashi’s ultimate aim is to make the vagina more “casual” in a country where it’s considered bad form to even mention ladies’ inner sanctums.
