Noah Needs Help!

• Fixing a Trackpad

We recently purchased an Asus Republic of Gamer Laptop. Model G752V

The issue is when you press on the trackpad buttons they do not register a click right or left. If you place your finger even lightly on the trackpad the left button then registered but not the right. If you place TWO fingers on the trackpad and click with the left button it registers as a right click.

If you execute the command synclient ClickPad=0 the left button then works but still no right click.

We have researched the problem at length and basically what we’ve concluded is that it requires a Kernel patch.

Here’s my suggestion for your bulletproof Linux setup.

Stick with Arch that you know and love, but build it on a filesystem that supports snapshots (I’d recommend ZFS). Then setup auto snapshotting e.g. every day.

I rebuilt my main system just before Christmas on ZFS, then some weeks later as an after thought, enabled daily snapshots. The very next day I did something silly whilst browsing, clicked on a dodgy link, and started having windows opening by themselves. The solution – logout, drop to a terminal, issue a single “zfs rollback” command, and my home partition was restored to how it was when I’d booted that day!

Arch is pretty stable, despite being rolling. Providing you reboot when you update and follow the Arch Announcements list you won’t have any issues. I also only update monthly as I can’t see the point in doing so more frequently for a system that you want to keep stable.

I just got a Oryx Pro 17.3 inch with 32 gb of ram, 512 SSD, and 1tb 7200rpm hard drive with a 8gb GTX1070 Nvidia gpu. The problem I am having is trying to get Antergos installed. even in the live boot, the cursor always is stuck in the upper left corner and even after installing it to the hard drive it is the same or will not boot at all. I have tried debian and other distros with the same issues, even tried Manjarro and it was no better.
Can you help me?

Message: I recently made the jump to Parabola GNU/Linux (essentially Arch, but using the Linux-libre kernel and FSF supported) and I am very glad that I did. I now have the latest packages available at my fingertips and I don’t have to worry about support running out. I’m not going to lie, I was skeptical about installing an Arch-based distro (being a Debian/Ubuntu/Trisquel guy for the past… I don’t know how many years), but the experience of going through and installing an Arch-based distro from the ground up was worth it.

And one last thing… systemd… this init system is so freaking easy to use. I know what the hype is all about now. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Oh, and one final thing (I promise), I am enjoying using Gnome as my desktop environment after using i3 for a while.

Google Plans to Introduce Android Laptops, Replacing Chrome as OS

• Starting next year, the company will work with partners to build personal computers that run on Android, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. The Chrome browser and operating systems aren’t disappearing — PC makers that produce Chromebooks will still be able to use Chrome. But they will now have the choice of Android.

• Even back in 2009, when they launched Chrome, co-founder emeritus Sergey Brin suggested the two systems may merge. The convergence momentum began two years ago when Sundar Pichai took the reins of both operating systems. Last year, after Pichai was promoted to SVP of all products, he appointed Hiroshi Lockheimer, his anointed successor, as engineering lead for Android and the Chrome OS.

• The company even gave us a hint. At its recent Nexus event, Google released its first Pixel C tablet that runs on Android. On the company earnings call last week, Pichai, now CEO, gave another, telling investors “mobile as a computing paradigm is eventually going to blend with what we think of as desktop today.”

• “Mobile gives us unique opportunities in terms of better understanding users,” Pichai said on the earnings call. “My long-term view on this is it is as compelling or, in fact, even better than desktop, but it will take us time to get there and we are going to be focused until we get there.”

Ever since Google unveiled Material Design, which works well on just about any size application, from full-screen tablets applications to small smartphone applications, and everything in between, it was clear to me Google was looking into expanding Android beyond smartphones and tablets.

message was a major setback and a huge disappointment. (Another symptom of
this evolution is how the PackageKit backend was rewritten with only the

Tor Project launches encrypted anonymous chat app to the public

The Tor Project says Instantbird was chosen as its transport protocols are written in a “memory safe” language — Javascript — and already supports a number of languages, as well as the fact Instantbird is an XUL application. While the client lacked off-the-record (ORT) cryptographical protocol support, Tor has implemented the new features within the beta Tor messenger.

After first surfacing Reddit, several Pastebin files have been found to contain hundreds of Dropbox users’ usernames and passwords—and the anonymous poster claims that there are millions more to come.

• According to the Next Web, the leaked lists are meant to entice users to donate Bitcoin, at which point the purported hacker will release more users’ info. The message atop the list reads:
  

  Here is another batch of Hacked Dropbox accounts from the massive hack of 7,000,000 accounts

  To see plenty more, just search on [redacted] for the term Dropbox hack.

• To put it another way: You need to change your password. Now. And then make sure that two-factor authentication is turned on.

• A spokesperson from Dropbox has provided us with the following statement:
  

  Dropbox has not been hacked. These usernames and passwords were unfortunately stolen from other services and used in attempts to log in to Dropbox accounts. We’d previously detected these attacks and the vast majority of the passwords posted have been expired for some time now. All other remaining passwords have been expired as well.

Court document reveals that Apple could fine sapphire glass manufacturer $50 Million for product leaks

GT Advanced Technologies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week and the court documents have revealed an interesting agreement with Apple. GT Advanced, who was contracted to make sapphire glass displays for Apple, stated that there was a clause in its contract that would see them fined upward of a $50 million (USD) penalty for any leaked products.

Today a group of privacy-focused developers plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign for Anonabox. The $45 open-source router automatically directs all data that connects to it by ethernet or Wifi through the Tor network, hiding the user’s IP address and skirting censorship. It’s also small enough to hide two in a pack of cigarettes.

Decline in PC Sales Starts to Slow; Largest Makers See Growth – NYTimes.com

IDC and Gartner on Wednesday released numbers on the worldwide demand for PCs that showed only a slight drop in demand, a distinct contrast to the trend of the last three years. This likely means, analysts said, that consumers may not be choosing tablets and smartphones over PCs to the same degree they had in the past. Soon, they said, the industry might see growth again.

It has come already for the biggest manufacturers. Companies like Lenovo, Hewlett- Packard and Dell all had good growth, particularly in a strong U.S. market.

In the United States, IDC said 17.3 million PCs were shipped, an increase of 4.3 percent from a year ago. Gartner put the number at 16.9 million, a rise of 4.2 percent. The top five companies were HP, Dell, Apple, Lenovo and Toshiba, both IDC and Gartner said.
