Researchers demonstrate how PINs and other info can be gathered through phone movement

  • Team was able to crack four digit-PINs with 70 percent accuracy on the first try, with 100 percent accuracy by try number five

  • A site accessed with malicious code can open the device to such sensor-based monitoring working in the background when browser tabs are left open.

  • The team suggests a number of ways to help combat vulnerabilities, including regularly changing PINs and quitting out of any apps not currently in use

  • Dan suggests: Simple way around this: randomize the display of numbers on the keypad. I think this should be standard for all PIN entry. I recall seeing this somewhere, years ago, but I don’t recall where. I’ve always wondered why I’ve never seen it again. If the numbers have a narrow field of vision, nobody can watch over your shoulder.

Security breach at health insurance firm Anthem, could expose 10s of millions

  • “Anthem Inc., the nation’s second largest health insurer, disclosed Wednesday that hackers had broken into its servers and stolen Social Security numbers and other personal data from all of its business lines. “
  • “Anthem didn’t specify how many consumer records may have been breached, but it did say all of the company’s business units are affected. The figures from Anthem’s Web site offer a glimpse at just how big this breach could be: “With nearly 69 million people served by its affiliated companies including more than 37 million enrolled in its family of health plans, Anthem is one of the nation’s leading health benefits companies.””
  • “The company said it is conducting an extensive IT forensic investigation to determine what members are impacted.”
  • It is reported that Anthem has hired Mandiant to investigate the attack
  • Exposed data:
  • Full Name
  • date of birth
  • member ID
  • Social Security number
  • address
  • phone numbers
  • email addresses
  • employment information
  • “According to Anthem’s statement, the impacted (plan/brands) include Anthem Blue Cross, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Amerigroup, Caremore, Unicare, Healthlink, and DeCare. The company said impacted members will receive notice via mail which will advise them of the protections being offered to them as well as any next steps.”
  • “Anthem said once the attack was discovered, the company immediately made every effort to close the security vulnerability, contacted the FBI and began fully cooperating with their investigation.”
  • More detailed information is not available yet, but I am sure we’ll be following this story in the weeks to come
  • Additional Coverage – ThreatPost
  • Additional Coverage

Hacked hotel phones used in bank phishing scam

  • “A recent phishing campaign targeting customers of several major U.S. banks was powered by text messages directing recipients to call hacked phone lines at Holiday Inn locations in the south. Such attacks are not new, but this one is a timely reminder that phishers increasingly are using lures blasted out via SMS as more banks turn to text messaging to communicate with customers about account activity.”
  • “The above-mentioned phishing attacks were actually a mix of scams known as “SMiShing” — phishing lures sent via SMS text message — and voice phishing or “vishing,” where consumers are directed to call a number that answers with a voice prompt spoofing the bank and instructing the caller to enter his credit card number and expiration date”
  • It seems Holiday Inn’s telephone switching system may have been hacked, and used to record and exfiltrate the stolen information
  • It is likely the hotel also lost out on business from customers actually trying to reach the hotel, and instead getting fake voice prompts for various banks
  • “According to Jan Volzke, Numbercop’s chief executive, these scams typically start on a Saturday afternoon and run through the weekend when targeted banks are typically closed.”
  • ““Two separate Holiday Inns getting hijacked in such short time suggests there is a larger issue at work with their telephone system provider,” he said. “That phone line is probably sitting right next to the credit card machine of the Holiday Inn. In a way this is just another retail terminal, and if they can’t secure their phone lines, maybe you shouldn’t be giving them your credit card.”
  • “A front desk clerk who answered the line on Tuesday said the hotel received over 100 complaints from people who got text messages prompting them to call the hotel’s main number during the time it was hacked.”
  • “Numbercop says the text message lures were sent using email-to-SMS gateways, but that the company also has seen similar campaigns sent from regular in-network numbers (prepaid mobile phones e.g.), which can be harder to catch. In addition, Volzke said, phishers often will target AT&T and Verizon users for use in furthering these schemes.”
  • Volzke says it’s unfortunate that more financial institutions aren’t communicating with their customers via mobile banking apps. “Banking apps are among the most frequently downloaded and used apps,” Volzke said. “If the user has an app from the bank installed, then if the bank really has something to say they should use the in-app messaging method, not text messages which can be spoofed and are not secure. And yet we see almost no bank making use of this.”
  • “Regardless of whether you communicate with your bank via text message, avoid calling phone numbers or clicking links that appear to have been sent via text message from your bank. Also, be extremely wary of any incoming calls from someone calling from your bank. If you think there may be an issue with your account, your best bet is to simply call the number on the back of your credit or debit card.”
  • Example call recording from Numbercop

ZFS On Linux is Production Ready, says Richard Yao

The short answer is yes, depending on your definition of stable.

I believe the ZoL is production ready for the following reasons:

  • Key ZFS data integrity features work on Linux like they do on other platforms.
  • ZFS runtime stability on Linux is comparable to other filesystems, with certain exceptions that I document below.
  • ZoL is at near feature parity with ZFS on other platforms.

Chrome OS can now run Android apps, no porting required

The app code is all running on top of the Chrome platform, specifically inside of Native Client. In this way the ARC (App Runtime for Chrome) apps run in the same environment as other apps you can download from the Chrome Web Store, even though they are written on top of standard Android APIs. The developers do not need to port or modify their code, though they often choose to improve it to work well with the Chromebook form factor (keyboard, touchpad, optional touchscreen, etc).

In a statement to CoinDesk, Lynzey Donahue, a US Marshals spokeswoman, indicated that the emailer had intended to send all the recipients an attached informational document and to blind copy all those it intended to contact. Dev Tool:

So, I’m going to try something radical. As of today, I’m making Zed my day-time job.

I’ve launched a company to further develop Zed, with the goal to, over time, earn enough money on it to support me and my family, and to continue developing Zed into something great.

While an obvious option to make Zed profitable would be to make it proprietary and sell licenses, I won’t be doing that. I think there’s a lot of value for users in the fact that their editor is open source, in terms of hackability and longevity. Also, since I’m a company of one — for the foreseeable future — I think the best way to compete is if when the community helps out with enhancement and bug fixes, as it does already. So, Zed will remain open source.

Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Cloud and Enterprise, announced the decision today is part of a broader initiative called .NET Foundation, the company’s move to open source multiple .NET components. T

Dev Hoopla: Build 2014

Microsoft open sources .NET compiler platform “Roslyn” and announces open source .NET Foundation initiative

At its Build 2014 conference today, Microsoft announced it is open sourcing its .NET compiler platform “Roslyn” – and then did exactly that, live on stage. Microsoft’s Anders Hejlsberg hit the button to make the project public on Codeplex.

For those who don’t know, Roslyn is a set of APIs for exposing the Microsoft C# and Visual Basic .NET compilers as services available at runtime. It includes versions of the C# and VB.NET compilers written in the languages themselves; in other words, the compilers are available via the traditional command-line programs, as well as APIs available natively from within .NET code.

Mobile-tool maker Xamarin, with whom Microsoft was partnering (rather than fighting/fearing, as some inside the company did initially) was a key advisor, Somasegar said. Some inside Microsoft were initially leery of Xamarin\’s goal to help .Net developers write apps that worked on Android and iOS because those platforms competed with Windows. But over time, Microsoft became more friend than foe to Xamarin — so much so that rumors are continuing to swirl that Microsoft may be negotiating to buy Xamarin.

Microsoft\’s open sourcing of .Net: The back story

Soma Somasegar, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft\’s Developer Division, told me during an interview at Build 2014 last week that the work around open-sourcing more of .Net began three years ago.

Windows will be free on phones, small tablets and the Internet of Things

The company has announced that Windows will be free for hardware makers to use on phones, tablets with screens under nine inches and Internet of Things devices.

Microsoft is bringing the Start Menu back

Microsoft announced a new Start Menu that looks like a hybrid of the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8. It\’s around the same size as the Windows 7 menu, but also features miniature Live Tiles along one side.

Microsoft also showed a new mode that allows modern Windows 8 apps to run in the desktop environment inside their own windows.

While Obama signals that surveillance reforms could be on the way, the heads of national spying apparatus took to the hill to defend their spying on world leaders, claiming it’s no big deal, everyone does it. PRISM Follow up

By tapping those links, the agency has positioned itself to collect at will from among hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans. The NSA does not keep everything it collects, but it keeps a lot.

According to a top secret accounting dated Jan. 9, 2013, NSA’s acquisitions directorate sends millions of records every day from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the agency’s Fort Meade headquarters. In the preceding 30 days, the report said, field collectors had processed and sent back 181,280,466 new records — ranging from “metadata,” which would indicate who sent or received e-mails and when, to content such as text, audio and video.

In a statement, Google said it was “troubled by allegations of the government intercepting traffic between our data centers, and we are not aware of this activity.”

Google has accelerated an initiative to encrypt data moving between its data centers, citing growing concerns about privacy and data security amid ongoing revelations about the code-breaking capabilities of the NSA and other global security agencies.

The Post writes: “Google officials declined to provide details on the cost of its new encryption efforts, the numbers of data centers involved, or the exact technology used. Officials did say that it will be what experts call ‘end-to-end,’ meaning that both the servers in the data centers and the information on the fiber-optic lines connecting them will be encrypted using ‘very strong’ technology. The project is expected to be completed soon, months ahead of the original schedule.”

Asked about the story, Gen. Keith Alexander, the agency’s leader, said earlier Wednesday he was unaware of it — adding the NSA is “not authorized” to access companies data centers and instead must “go through a court process” to obtain such content.

the NSA’s director, General Keith Alexander, actually demanded Thursday that the reporting being done by newspapers around the world on this secret surveillance system be halted (

NSA is CRAZY

The president allegedly allowed US intelligence to listen to calls from the German
Chancellor’s mobile phone after he was briefed on the operation by Keith
Alexander, director of the National Security Agency (NSA), in 2010.

The latest claim, reported in the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, followed
reports in Der Spiegel that the surveillance of Mrs Merkel’s phone began as
long ago as 2002
, when she was still the opposition leader, three
years before being elected Chancellor. That monitoring only ended in the
weeks before Mr Obama visited Berlin in June this year, the magazine added.

According to SPIEGEL research, United States intelligence agencies have not only targeted Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cellphone, but they have also used the American Embassy in Berlin as a listening station. The revelations now pose a serious threat to German-American relations.

The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, has summoned the US ambassador to explain the latest revelations to emerge from the files leaked by Edward Snowden, which suggest the National Security Agency tracked more than 60m phone calls in Spain in the space of a month.

In a pointed statement issued today, Senate Intelligence
Committee chairman Dianne Feinstein said she was “totally opposed” to gathering
intelligence on foreign leaders
and said it was “a big problem” if President
Obama didn’t know the NSA was monitoring the phone calls of German Chancellor
Angela Merkel.

The bill introduced by the Republican author of the Patriot Act aims to end bulk metadata collection, order greater transparency in intelligence gathering and close foreign loopholes

“The service Edward Snowden has done for the disclosure of the NSA spying methods are undeniable. Germany should, together with other European states, seriously look into whether it is possible to take Snowden in,” Lars Klingbeil, SPD internet policy spokesman told Handelsblatt over the weekend.

Royal Phone Hacking

Two of Rupert Murdoch’s top editors, Rebekah Brooks and Andrew Coulson oversaw a system of phone hacking and illegal payments to officials when they ran the now-defunct News of the World tabloid, a London court heard Wednesday.

Oh no… GMO?

Biotechnology giant Monsanto Co. on Monday dumped another $540,000 to fight a Washington state ballot measure requiring genetically engineered foods be labeled.

Food companies including Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Campbell Soup, and Hershey already sell GMO-labeled products in some of the 60-plus other countries around that world that require it, but have fought hard to avoid putting the same information on drinks and snacks in the U.S., their biggest and most lucrative market. So far, it’s worked: Deep pockets and effective lobbying through the GMA, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, have helped stall or defeat both state-by-state legislation and a nationwide FDA ruling to require labeling.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), which
represents more than 300 food and beverage companies, has put
roughly $11 million into fighting the measure, or roughly half
of the nearly $22 million raised by opponents of labeling,
according to Washington Public Disclosure Commission figures as
of Tuesday.

That far outstrips the roughly $6.8 million raised by
supporters of the labeling initiative, according to the
Commission.

“They are making this the most expensive race and are
desperately adding last-minute money to try and buy this
election,” said Liz Larter, spokeswoman for “Yes on 522”
campaign, a reference to the ballot measure’s number.

Regardless of the reason, the race has certainly tightened. In
September, one poll showed support for labeling up by a
staggering 45 percent. Two recent polls tell a much different
story, though: Supporters are still leading, but by much smaller
margins. One poll showed them ahead 45 to 38 percent, while the
other indicated an even slimmer advantage of 46 to 42 percent.

Feedback:

The document – obtained by Al Jazeera through a Freedom of Information Act request – contains talking points and suggested statements for NSA officials (PDF) responding to the fallout from media revelations that originated with former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Invoking the events of 9/11 to justify the controversial NSA programs, which have caused major diplomatic fallout around the world, was the top item on the talking points agency officials were encouraged to use.

Under the sub-heading, “Sound Bites that Resonate,” the document suggests the statement: “I much prefer to be here today explaining these programs, than explaining another 9/11 event that we were not able to prevent.”

The ReactOS software includes binary and source distributions of the latest ReactOS. This includes the kernel, various subsystems and some basic applications.

Notes:

  • Installer looks straight outta NT4 / Win2k DOS days.

  • File system choices are FAT32 or ext2

  • In a future where ChromeOS and tablets are a viable platform for the majority of your computing, ReactOS could play the role of enabling legacy support for old Win32 apps. In a sense, further eliminating in shred of legitimacy the Windows platform could hold 7+ years out.

Dev Hoopla

My guess is that the conversion will start slow. Perhaps Google will start to push Chrome apps for the Android version of Chrome. Maybe in a year, when those rumored Google stores start to show, we’ll see a Chrome for Mobile “developer phone.” Regardless of the conversion starts, my bet is that within the next five years Google will start publically pushing Chrome as its next generation operating system.

Google is fixing its eyes on its favoured partner, Samsung. The Android OS made the South Korean tech giant become the dominant smartphone maker in the world with nearly 215 million smartphones in 2012 or 40 per cent of the global market.

Data released by UK\’s Juniper Research shows that although Samsung has retaken the smartphone sales lead from Apple, with 42.2 million sold against 35.1 million, Apple is easily leading in terms of revenue from mobile sales. It estimates that Apple\’s mobile revenues were $29.3 billion, when including the iPad. By comparison, Samsung\’s revenue from all mobile devices including feature phones came in at $17 billion.

They\’re actually generating more than 100 percent of the industry\’s earnings — 106 percent, to be precise — according to a report from Canaccord Genuity.

That may seem impossible, but it\’s largely because rivals — like Research In Motion, Nokia, and Motorola — posted operating losses during the September quarter, the firm said.
