Fedora 25 Linux arrives with Wayland display support

The big news for desktop users in Workstation is the Wayland display server has finally replaced the legacy X11 Window server. Wayland has been in the works since 2008. The point of Wayland is to provide a smoother, richer experience for graphical environments. X also had a huge amount of functionality that was no longer being used.

On top of Wayland, Fedora 25 Workstation runs GNOME 3.22. This latest desktop claims to offer multiple file renaming, a redesigned keyboard settings tool, and additional user interface improvements. If, like me, you’re not a GNOME fan, Fedora 25 also supports spins with other default desktops. These include KDE, XFCE, LXDE, MATE, and Cinnamon.

How To Test

Boot a fresh F25 workstation install.
Verify that the login screen is running under Wayland (you can do so by looking for a process called gdm-wayland-session in ps -ef output)
Verify that the session chooser offers ‘GNOME’, ‘GNOME on X11’ and ‘GNOME Classic’, and that ‘GNOME’ is selected by default.
Log into all three of these sessions and verify that ‘GNOME’ gives you Wayland (you can verify this by bringing up the GTK+ inspector in a gtk3 application and checking what backend is used), while the other two end up with X11.
Change the gdm configuration by adding WaylandEnable=false and reboot
Verify that the login screen comes up under X
Verify that only X-based sessions are offered in the session chooser
Log into the Wayland-based session again
Use the desktop normally, and verify that there are no obvious instabilities, or Wayland-specific bugs or performance problems

I recently installed Antergos on my Oryx Pro and experienced similar problems with the trackpad.

I found that by replacing LightDM with GDM fixed the problems with the trackpad. After switching to GDM, additional setting show up for the trackpad including tap to click.

Also after switching to GDM, the two finger scrolling worked better in particular the horizontal scrolling.

Today is apparently Pixel leak day. After getting some new details on pricing and spotting the phone in a Nest ad, some actual photos of the phones have emerged. The image above (and another below) show both phones side-by-side. This marks the first time we’ve actually seen the phones in the flesh—er, metal. Whatever.

Pricing for the smaller Google Pixel phone could start at $649, but financing will be available

Previous rumors pegged the larger Pixel XL with a starting price of $649, but our source says that’s not the case. It’s the smaller, cheaper 5-inch Pixel that will start at this price. This will most likely be for the base storage model, presumably 32GB but we can’t say for sure.

Two independent and reliable sources have confirmed to us that Google is planning a new Pixel laptop to be released in Q3 2017. The project, known internally as ‘Bison’ and by the informal nickname ‘Pixel 3,’ will likely be the first brand-new device to showcase Google’s combined Android / Chrome OS ‘Andromeda’ operating system in a laptop form factor.

Taking Root – Malware on Mobile Devices

Since June 2015, we have seen a steady growth in the number of mobile malware attacks that use superuser privileges (root access) on the device to achieve their goals.
Root access is incompatible with the operating system’s security model because it violates the principle that applications should be isolated from each other and from the system. It gives an application using root access a virtually unlimited control of the device, which is completely unacceptable in the case of a malicious application.
Malicious use of superuser privileges is not new in itself: in regions where smartphones are sold with privilege escalation tools preinstalled on them, malware writers have long been using this technique. There are also known cases of Trojans gaining such privileges after the user ‘rooted’ the device, i.e. used vulnerabilities to install applications that give superuser privileges on the phone.
They analyzed the statistics collected from May to August 2015 and identified “Trojan families” that use root privileges without the user’s knowledge: Trojan.AndroidOS.Ztorg, Trojan-Dropper.AndroidOS.Gorpo (which operates in conjunction with Trojan.AndroidOS.Fadeb) and Trojan-Downloader.AndroidOS.Leech. All these mobile malware families can install programs; their functionality is in effect limited to providing the capability to download and install any applications on the phone without the user’s knowledge.
A distinctive feature of these mobile Trojans is that they are packages built into legitimate applications but not in any way connected with these applications’ original purpose. Cybercriminals simply take popular legit apps and add malicious code without affecting the main functionality.
After launching, the Trojan attempts to exploit Android OS vulnerabilities known to it one after another in order to gain superuser privileges. In case of success, a standalone version of the malware is installed in the system application folder (/system/app). It regularly connects to the cybercriminals’ server, waiting for commands to download and install other applications.
There are popular “families” of Android malware.
Leech Family
This malware family is the most advanced of those described.
Some of its versions can bypass dynamic checks performed by Google before applications can appear in the official Google Play Store. Malware from this family can obtain (based on device IP address, using a resource called ipinfo.io) a range of data, including country of registration, address, and domain names matching the IP address. Next, the Trojan checks whether the IP address is in the IP ranges used by Google.
The malware also uses a dynamic code loading technique, which involves downloading all critically important modules and loading them into its context at run time. This makes static analysis of the application difficult. As a result of using all the techniques described above, the Trojan made it to the official Google Play app store as part of an application named “How Old Camera” – a service that attempts to guess people’s ages from their photos.
Ztorg family
On the whole, Trojans belonging to this family have the same functionality as the previous described.
The distribution techniques used also match those employed to spread Trojans from the Gorpo (plus Fadeb) and Leech families – malicious code packages are embedded in legitimate applications. The only significant difference is that the latest versions of this malware use a protection technique that enables them to completely hide code from static analysis.
The attackers use a protector that replaces the application’s executable file with a dummy, decrypting the original executable file and loading it into the process’s address space when the application is launched.
Additionally, string obfuscation is used to make the task of analyzing these files, which is quite complicated as it is, even more difficult.
It is not very common for malicious applications to be able to gain superuser privileges on their own. Such techniques have mainly been used in sophisticated malware designed for targeted attacks.

Will the insurance industry take over InfoSec?

“Insurance is a maturity indicator“
When insurance comes, full scale, to the InfoSec industry, maybe that means we have finally gotten to the point where we understand the risks enough to start putting money on it
While I can definitely see the argument that insurance companies are in a position to force their clients into certain minimum security practises, either to qualify for insurance, or for a reduced rate
At the same time, I foresee a bunch of useless certifications, extra bureaucracy, and more things like PCI-DSS audits that miss the point entirely
“People see insurance entering into security as a bad thing, and maybe it is, but it should not be unexpected. If something involves both risk and significant quantities of money, there are likely people trying to buy or sell insurance around it. The car industry is informative here. As is healthcare, and countless other industries.”
The article points points out the three basic requirements for insurance companies to be interested:
Significant risk associated with the space, e.g., dying in surgery, getting into a car wreck, etc.
Adequate money in the form of a population able to pay premiums.
Sufficient actuarial data on which to base the pricing and payout models.
I don’t know that that last measure can be met yet. Unlike with car insurance, it is much harder to predict what a company’s chances of getting breached are.
Considering factors like how high profile they are (fancier cars get stolen more), what infrastructure they use (newer cars are safer), how often they patch (this can be hard to measure, like how often you service your car, it might not work), doesn’t really give you enough information in order to price the insurance
In the end, pretty much every company has a 100% change to be breached, it can come down to how quickly it will be detected, and how much damage will be done
At this point, I don’t think the insurance industry is qualified, and we’ll either see them making so many payouts that they are losing money, or writing loopholes into insurance with vague sentiments like “industry standard security practises”, to weasel out of paying up
Predictions from the article:
Insurance companies will have strict InfoSec standards that will be used to determine how much insurance, of what type, they will extend to a customer, as well as how much they will charge for it
- As you would expect, companies who are deemed to be in poor security health will either pay exorbitant premiums or will be ineligible for coverage altogether
- In this world, auditors become the center of the InfoSec universe. Either working for the insurance companies themselves, or being private contractors that are hired by the insurance companies, these auditors will be paid to thoroughly assess companies’ security posture in order to determine what coverage they’ll be eligible for, and how much it will cost
- Insurance companies become, in other words, a dedicated entity that uses evidence-based decision making to incentivize improved security
- For both internal and audit companies, those certifications will have to be maintained the same way medical professionals have to maintain their knowledge. Not like a CISSP where you lose a credential if you don’t renew it, but where you’re just instantly fired if it lapses
“When you think about it, it’s not really insurance that’s making this happen, it’s industry maturity as a whole. It’s InfoSec becoming just like every other serious profession.”
“Think about a hospital, or an architecture firm. You can’t hire nurses who have an aptitude for caring, and who helped this guy this one time. Nope—have a credential or you can’t work there. Same with accountants, and architects, and electricians, and civil engineers.”
Insurance won’t fix everything (or anything?)
“We also need to accept that the standardization and insurance agencies won’t fix everything. Auditors make mistakes, companies can and will successfully lie about their controls, certifications only get you so far, and the insurance companies have their own interests that are often in conflict with the goal of increased security.”

The NSA books crypto recommendations

The NSA, in its role as the organization that sets cryptography standards used by the entire government, has updated its recommendations on what algorithms and key sizes to use
Currently, Suite B cryptographic algorithms are specified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and are used by NSA’s Information Assurance Directorate in solutions approved for protecting classified and unclassified National Security Systems (NSS).
A look at the site from a few months ago highlights some of the differences
- AES 128 was dropped. Former used for ‘SECRET’ with AES 256 for ‘TOP Secret’, AES 256 is recommended for both now
- ECDH and ECDSA P-256 were also dropped for ‘less’ secret information in favour of P-384
- SHA256 was also dropped. Surprisingly, SHA-384 remained the recommendation over SHA-512
- Additionally, new requirements that were not specified before were added
- Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange requires at least 3072-bit keys
- RSA for Key Establishment and Digital Signatures also now requires 3072 bit keys
IAD will initiate a transition to quantum resistant algorithms in the not too distant future. Based on experience in deploying Suite B, we have determined to start planning and communicating early about the upcoming transition to quantum resistant algorithms.
We are working with partners across the USG, vendors, and standards bodies to ensure there is a clear plan for getting a new suite of algorithms that are developed in an open and transparent manner that will form the foundation of our next Suite of cryptographic algorithms.
Until this new suite is developed and products are available implementing the quantum resistant suite, we will rely on current algorithms.
With respect to IAD customers using large, unclassified PKI systems, remaining at 112 bits of security (i.e. 2048-bit RSA) may be preferable (or sometimes necessary due to budget constraints) for the near-term in anticipation of deploying quantum resistant asymmetric algorithms upon their first availability.

Vox Media Adds ReCode to Its Stable of Websites – NYTimes.com

Comcast, investor in Vox Media and Recode, could end up buying them both – Quartz

One reason for the renewed discussions may be Comcast’s role in encouraging Vox Media’s acquisition of Recode, the technology news site with a small audience but growing events business. Sources say Comcast, which owns minority stakes in both companies, gave its blessing to the deal several months ago. David Zilberman, a managing director of Comcast Ventures, its venture capital arm, sits on Vox Media’s board. He didn’t reply to a message seeking comment.

APNewsBreak: IRS says thieves stole tax info from 100,000

The thieves accessed a system called “Get Transcript,” where taxpayers can get tax returns and other filings from previous years. In order to access the information, the thieves cleared a security screen that required knowledge about the taxpayer, including Social Security number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address, the IRS said.

Microsoft partners with LG, Sony, other OEMs to sell Android tablets featuring Office, OneDrive, Skype

In total, Microsoft has now partnered with 31 global and local OEMs (11 in March and 20 today) to preinstall its apps onto Android devices throughout this year. Only time will tell if Microsoft’s apps end up actually being used more because of these deals.

OnePlus teases next smartphone announcement on Twitter

OnePlus says it is “Time to change” in its latest tweet, teasing a possible smartphone announcement for June 1. Chinese smartphone maker, OnePlus, relies heavily on Twitter for making announcements and promoting products and now the company would like to shake things up according to its latest tweet.

Update on Extension Signing and New Developer Agreement

Next week, we will activate two new features on AMO: signing of new add-on versions after they are reviewed, and add-on submission for developers who wish to have their add-ons signed but don’t want them listed on AMO. We will post another update once this happens. When this is done, all extension developers will be able to have their extensions signed, with enough time to update their users before signing becomes a requirement in release versions of Firefox.

Google I/O 2015 Preview: We’re doubling down on Android M, Chrome, Wear and more

Obviously Android M(arshmallow?), Wear updates including the next Moto 360 are at the top of the list. I’ve been hearing whispers that the new 360 is smaller, uses more modern/efficient SoC and a better OLED display. I’m praying to the robot dog overlords at Google that they have these as developer demo units (read: presents) at I/O. Use on iOS as has been found in code would also be nice for us who use both platforms. I’ve heard Samsung might have something round for us to feast on soon, and who knows, maybe we’ll see a $1,400 Tag Heuer Watch somehow with Intel Inside.

Chrome for Android goes almost ‘entirely open source’

In a post in the /r/Android subreddit, an engineer of Chrome for Android announced that the mobile browser is now “almost entirely open source,” with the bulk of its code now available in the open source Chromium repository just like its desktop sibling. To explain the use of the word ‘almost’ in layman’s terms, Google saves certain features — particularly those which communicate with your Google account — for its commercial version of Chromium, which is the Chrome browser.

Why I’m breaking up with Google Chrome

When Chrome debuted for the first time in 2008 it was the fastest browser on the block. It was light, nimble, extensible and easy to use compared to Firefox, which had become slow and cumbersome.

In the past few years, I’ve stuck with it, even as it became a memory hog, unstable and a major drain on battery life.

I was in denial. But now I have to admit it — the stable, snappy Chrome is a distant memory. As it has grown in popularity, it’s steadily got worse.

Spy agencies target mobile phones, app stores to implant spyware

Electronic intelligence agencies began targeting UC Browser — a massively popular app in China and India with growing use in North America — in late 2011 after discovering it leaked revealing details about its half-billion users.

Their goal, in tapping into UC Browser and also looking for larger app store vulnerabilities, was to collect data on suspected terrorists and other intelligence targets — and, in some cases, implant spyware on targeted smartphones.

The 2012 document shows that the surveillance agencies exploited the weaknesses in certain mobile apps in pursuit of their national security interests, but it appears they didn’t alert the companies or the public to these weaknesses. That potentially put millions of users in danger of their data being accessed by other governments’ agencies, hackers or criminals.

Linux 4.0 Has a File-System Corruption Problem, RAID Users Warned

For the past few days kernel developers and Linux users have been investigating an EXT4 file-system corruption issue affecting the latest stable kernel series (Linux 4.0) and the current development code (Linux 4.1). It turns out that Linux users running the EXT4 file-system on a RAID0 configuration can easily destroy their file-system with this newest “stable” kernel. The cause and fix have materialized but it hasn’t yet worked its way out into the mainline kernel, thus users should be warned before quickly upgrading to the new kernel on systems with EXT4 and RAID0.

Apparently this was fixed in the 4.0.3 Kernel. The current release is 4.0.4.

YouTube eyes Twitch user base, adds 60 FPS live streams with HTML5 playback | Ars Technica

The HTML5 player will not only save users from the CPU and batter__y-eating Flash player, but will also enable variable speed playback, allowing users to “skip backward in a stream while it’s live and watch at 1.5x or 2x speed to catch back up.”

Netflix To Roll Out A New, More Immersive Web Interface Starting In June | TechCrunch

Netflix confirms today that it will roll out a new user interface on the web to all users worldwide beginning next month. A number of Netflix customers are already seeing the updated look-and-feel, however, according to various reports. The interface, which was previously demonstrated at CES and Mobile World Congress, brings the design of Netflix’s website more in line with what users today see on mobile phones, tablets, on gaming consoles and on other streaming media players, like Roku.

Report: Google to launch wireless service this year | Ars Technica

Reports about a rumored Google wireless service are cropping up again. The Information (subscription required) is reporting that Google plans to resell Sprint and T-Mobile services as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO).

Google drops three OS X 0days on Apple | Ars Technica

In the past two days, Project Zero has disclosed OS X vulnerabilities here, here, and here. At first glance, none of them appear to be highly critical, since all three appear to require the attacker to already have some access to a targeted machine. What’s more, the first vulnerability, the one involving the “networkd ‘effective_audit_token’ XPC,” may already have been mitigated in OS X Yosemite, but if so the Google advisory doesn’t make this explicit and Apple doesn’t publicly discuss security matters with reporters.

Still, the exploits could be combined with a separate attack to elevate lower-level privileges and gain control over vulnerable Macs.

Surface RT Devices Won’t Get Windows 10

In its announcement of Windows 10, Microsoft indicated not all devices would get the updated operating system. Now, Microsoft says its Surface devices running Windows RT won’t be receiving full updates, though it does plan to roll some new functionality into them. “Given that Windows RT and RT 8.1 were designed for power economizing devices sporting 32-bit ARM architecture, and never had the same functionality — to many users’ frustration — as full-blown Windows 8 and 8.1, it comes as little surprise that the RT versions of the operating system should be left out of the latest update loop. In fact, a week before Microsoft’s big Windows 10 reveal on January 21, the company released firmware updates for all three models of its Intel-powered Surface Pro series, but neither of the ARM-based Surface tablets — the Surface 2 or Surface RT — received any new updates this month.” The Surface Pro line of tablets, which run a normal version of Windows, will be getting an update to Windows 10.

Apple has lost the functional high ground – Marco.org

Apple’s hardware today is amazing — it has never been better. But the software quality has taken such a nosedive in the last few years that I’m deeply concerned for its future. I’m typing this on a computer whose existence I didn’t even think would be possible yet, but it runs an OS riddled with embarrassing bugs and fundamental regressions. Just a few years ago, we would have relentlessly made fun of Windows users for these same bugs on their inferior OS, but we can’t talk anymore.

Microsoft is building a new browser as part of its Windows 10 push

Spartan is still going to use Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine and Microsoft’s Trident rendering engine (not WebKit), sources say. As Neowin’s Brad Sams reported back in September, the coming browser will look and feel more like Chrome and Firefox and will support extensions.

Sams also reported on December 29 that Microsoft has two different versions of Trident in the works, which also seemingly supports the claim that the company has two different Trident-based browsers.

However, if my sources are right, Spartan is not IE 12. Instead, Spartan is a new, light-weight browser Microsoft is building.

We had previously helped Unity bring Mono as the scripting language used in their engine and we now had a chance to do this over again.

I get hate mail for hacking on Open Source. People have started multiple “petitions” on petition web sites, asking me to stop working (google for it). Recently, people started collecting Bitcoins to hire a hitman for me (this really happened!). Just the other day, some idiot posted a “song” on youtube, a creepy work, filled with expletives about me and suggestions of violence. People post websites about boycotting my projects, containing pretty personal attacks. On IRC, people /msg me sometimes, with nasty messages, and references to artwork in 4chan style. And there’s more. A lot more.

Person responsible for iOS 8.0.1 debacle also linked to iOS 6 Maps

A quality assurance manager responsible for this week’s botched iOS 8.0.1 release was also in charge of QA for iOS 6 Maps, sources tell Bloomberg. The man is identified as Josh Williams, who is said to have been removed from the Maps team after the app gave people bad directions and/or mislabeled important scenery. He has however been with Apple since 2000, and has been handling quality issues for iOS since the early days of the iPhone.

It’s reported that Williams has a team of over 100 people around the world, and that the company relies more on human discovery of bugs than automated testing. Partly because of these factors, it’s indicated that no single person can be held responsible for major software trouble. The company in fact has a committee called the Bug Review Board overseen by Kim Vorrath, VP of product management for iOS and OS X. She in turn reports to Craig Federighi, the senior VP for software engineering. To help with testing, the company relies heavily on feedback from third-party developers.

It’s at BRB meetings that Vorrath, Williams, and other people determine which bugs need to be solved immediately and which can be dealt with later. Bugs are labeled P1, P2, or P3; P1 can halt production of a device, while P2 or P3 items can be rolled into development of later updates even before the initial firmware is out.

iPhone 6 Plus review | The Verge

I can’t see myself ever using my iPad mini again after having the 6 Plus, and it’s getting harder and harder to justify pulling out my iPad Air. With the right software changes, I could basically use an iPhone 6 Plus all day long, for everything from sending messages to editing documents to watching videos. A do-everything phone like the 6 Plus would eventually allow Apple to push the iPad even further towards becoming the true laptop replacement it was always meant to be.

We’re going to need bigger hands.

t I have no desire to use an iPhone 6 Plus as my personal phone. I ordered an iPhone 6 for my own use. And if the iPhone 6 Plus were the only new iPhone this year, I probably would have stuck with the iPhone 5S.

Google Play Services Updated for Testing Google Fit Apps

oogle has begun rolling out Google Play services 6.1 with a set of new APIs for developers. The new features include an Enhanced Ecommerce extension for analytics, improvements to Drive support, and testing capabilities for the upcoming Google Fit platform.

Enhanced Ecommerce provides “richer insights into pre-purchase shopping behavior and into product performance.”

Round two of Microsoft layoffs coming September 18: Sources | ZDNet

Microsoft cut 13,000 employees total in the first wave back in July. That wave included some, but not all, of the former Nokia employees, my contacts say. It also included employees in the Operating Systems Group and just about every other group across the company. Microsoft also is planning to reduce its dependency on “contingent” (non full-time) employees by 20 percent as part of its realignment.

I am not sure how many will be cut in this week’s round, which I’ve heard will be announced internally this Thursday, September 18. But I do hear that the second round of cuts will span across almost every group at the company. I’ve also heard there still will be more cuts happening as part of the original 18,000 total at further dates in the future.

Docker Raises $40M, Plans New Enterprise Tool for 2015

Docker Inc., the lead commercial sponsor behind the open-source Docker container technology, today announced that it has closed a $40 million Series C round of funding. The new round of funding comes on the heels of the Docker 1.0 release and the emergence of a commercial ecosystem around the container virtualization technology.

The Series C round of funding is the second funding event for Docker in 2014. In January, Docker announced a $15 million funding round.

The latest funding round brings Dockers’ total funding since its founding to $66 million, CEO Ben Golub said, adding that Docker has only now just begun spending the Series A funding money and is starting to tap into the Series B funds. “We closed the Series C pre-emptively, so we would have a full powder keg to go after the market opportunity,” G

Amazon Kindle vulnerability lets hackers take over your account – The Inquirer

AMAZON’S KINDLE has been found to be vulnerable to a type of malware that is triggered by downloading an ebook with a booby-trap.

Security researcher Benjamin Daniel Mussler has demonstrated a proof of concept attack the uses cross-site scripting (XSS) to infect a computer opening a sideloaded title containing code.

Verizon denies plan to launch its own Android app store (update) | The Verge

Verizon is going to launch its own app store in an effort to compete with the Google Play Store on Android devices, claims a report from The Information. The new store will be available globally and is the result of a partnership with other carriers and hardware makers, says the report. In 2010, Verizon Wireless launched a similar app store for Android and BlackBerry smartphones in the US, but it shuttered it in January 2013. The Information says the discussions for a new app store are still in an early stage, and there is not a concrete date for when it would launch.

However, Recode received a statement from Verizon saying that the carrier had no plans to offer a new app store. “We have no plans to do that,” Verizon spokeswoman Debra Lewis said. “Been there. Done that.” Amir Efrati from _The Information _tweeted the following in response: “I and @theinformation stand by this report 100%.” Efrait also said that “Verizon’s comment is misleading.”

The Information claims that this new effort is a response to recent cutbacks from Google in revenue sharing with carriers and hardware makers for apps sold through the Google Play Store. Verizon would be stemming future losses with its own app store, as revenues from app store sales are expected to grow significantly over the next few years. The report says that Verizon would also use data like location, time of day, and social indicators to recommend apps to users.

Brazil Court Issues Injunction Against Secret And Calls For App To Be Remotely Wiped | TechCrunch

A court in Brazil has ruled (via UOL) that Apple and Google must remove Secret, the anonymous social networking app, from their mobile software stores — and also from user devices where it’s already installed. The court has issued a preliminary injunction in the case, pending the results of a final ruling, as a result of a complaints by users harmed by rumors spread via the app, who said that the app was used to share an “intimate photo” of him, which included personal identifying information including his full name and telephone number.

The injunction actually goes so far as to require that the companies remotely wipe the app from existing devices. That’s a tall order, of course, but the court has also applied a fine of around $9,000 per day following a 10-day grace period in case the rules haven’t been followed.

Uber Opens Its API With 11 Launch Partners, Including OpenTable, TripAdvisor, and United Airlines | TechCrunch

Today, the company is announcing its API will become available to app developers, with 11 launch partners already signed up.

For Uber, the introduction of its API is designed to increase reach and get it in front of lots of new potential users. The company is in 150 cities and nearly 50 countries around the world, but there are untold number of users who might not have tried its service. Showing up in other apps that those users already have installed is a simple way to introduce them to getting an Uber on-demand.

While it’s trying to appeal to as many app developers as possible, to start Uber is launching with 11 API partners that have already committed to introducing Uber to their users. Those apps include Expensify, Hinge, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, Momento, OpenTable, Starbucks, Tempo, Time Out, TripAdvisor, TripCase, and United Airlines.

Samsung’s first Nook tablet arrives at Barnes & Noble today for $179 | The Verge

Samsung is becoming Barnes & Noble’s first partner to create a Nook-branded tablet today with the unveiling and release of the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook. The name is a mouthful, but it basically means that the tablet is a rebranded version of Samsung’s existing Galaxy Tab 4 tablet — part of its low-end line — that’s now been customized with some Nook software. The tablet has a 7-inch, 1280 x 800 display and will sell for $179.

Blizzard Not Expecting Major World Of Warcraft Growth

In a recent interview with MCV, World of Warcraft lead designer Tom Chilton admitted that Blizzard isn’t expecting to see the MMORPG grow like it did prior to the Cataclysm release. That’s likely because the subscription numbers have been on a steady decline since 4Q 2010

As of Q2 2014, World of Warcraft had 6.8 million subscribers. The upcoming fifth expansion pack, Warlords of Draenor, is expected to bring some players back. Previously, Blizzard indicated that it’s not unusual to see customers cancel their subscription until a new expansion arrives. Once that’s consumed, they will cancel again and wait for new content.

Last week, Blizzard announced that the upcoming Warlords of Draenor will be released on November 13, 2014.

Amazon apparently set to launch Square-competitor in August as it develops biometric payment solutions

Amazon could be preparing to launch its own mobile credit card reading hardware in the coming weeks, according to internal Staples documents hinting at such a launch that we’ve obtained. According to the documents, Staples stores will prepare next month to stock a new product called the “Amazon Card Reader” alongside existing card readers from Square, PayPal, and Staples’ own in-house brand. The small hardware, which will likely connect to smartphones to process payments, will cost $9.99, according to the Staples internal sales systems…

An exact launch date for the product is unconfirmed, but Staples has asked its stores to wait until Tuesday, August 12th to put up new signage related to the Amazon Card Reader, so it’s possible that the release is scheduled for that week.

Yesterday Amazon said that while its cloud business grew by 90 percent last year, it was significantly less profitable. Amazon’s AWS cloud business makes up the majority of a balance sheet item it labels as “other” (along with its credit card and advertising revenue) and that revenue from that line of business grew by 38 percent. Last quarter, revenue grew by 60 percent. In other words, Amazon is piling on customers faster than it’s adding dollars to its bottom line.

The company’s chief financial officer, Tom Szkutak, blamed the drop on “substantial” price reductions the company has made to products such as its core EC2, storage and database services. “They ranged from 28 percent to 51 percent depending on the service,” he said on a conference call with analysts.

The thing is that even as Amazon’s business matures to the size of a company like VMware, its worrying to investors to see profitability slipping. That’s pretty much the meta-narrative of Amazon as a whole, though, which says it could lose as much as $810 million in the current quarter. The company is taking losses to invest in the future, and Amazon’s 10 percent stock drop today shows that some investors are uncomfortable with that.

Amazon.com Inc. missed analysts’ estimates for a second straight quarter, sending the shares tumbling 11 percent.

Trend Micro backs off Google Play malware claims

In a recent press release, Trend Micro made a fairly bold claim about malware running rampant in the Google Play Store. The release, dated July 15, 2014, began as follows:

Google Play populated with fake apps, with more than half carrying malware

Potentially evil doppelgangers for the most popular apps are inundating the Google Play store, with many carrying malware, according to a new blog post and report by Trend Micro, a global developer of cyber security solutions.

In the report more than 77 percent of the top 50 apps on the Google Play store have repackaged or fake apps associated with them.

It turns out that Trend Micro is guilty of a little over-eager language that obfuscated the nature of some of these threats. While there are indeed fake versions of many popular Android apps available for download, Trend failed to mention in their initial promotion for the report that the apps in question were posted outside the Play Store, and had to be installed manually in what’s commonly known as a side-load. This requires users to download the app in a browser, ignore a standard security warning about APK files, and disable a security option in Android’s main settings menu.

Linus Torvalds: “GCC 4.9.0 Seems To Be Terminally Broken” – Slashdot

A critique from Linus Torvalds of GCC 4.9.0. after a random panic was discovered in a load balance function in Linux 3.16-rc6. in an email to the Linux kernel mailing list outlining two separate but possibly related bugs, Linus describes the compiler as “terminally broken,” and worse (“pure and utter sh*t,” only with no asterisk).

“Lookie here, your compiler does some absolutely insane things with the spilling, including spilling a *constant. For chrissake, that compiler shouldn’t have been allowed to graduate from kindergarten. We’re talking “sloth that was dropped on the head as a baby” level retardation levels here …. Anyway, this is not a kernel bug. This is your compiler creating completely broken code. We may need to add a warning to make sure nobody compiles with gcc-4.9.0, and the Debian people should probably downgrate their shiny new compiler.”*

Netflix Will Shut Down Public API Support For Third-Party Developers On November 14

Netflix is getting a lot stingier with the way that third-party developers can use its content, announcing that it will stop supporting its public API by the end of the year. In a letter to API partners, Netflix VP of Edge Engineering Daniel Jacobson announced that it would retire the public API program effective November 14.

The decision to shutdown its API seems a long time coming. Launched six years ago, the API originally provided third-party developers a way to access and point to content that users could get from Netflix in its streaming and DVD catalogs.

That helped the company grow, as subscribers could use third-party apps to check the availability of titles, reserve DVDs, and even link directly to streaming content on the web.
