Critical OpenSSH flaw can expose your private keys and other client memory

  • Two major issues have been identified in OpenSSH
  • CVE-2016-0777: An information leak (memory disclosure) can be exploited by a rogue SSH server to trick a client into leaking sensitive data from the client memory, including for example private keys.
  • Vendor contributed code for a feature called Roaming, was added in OpenSSH 5.4, that allowed broken SSH sessions to be resumed. The server side code for this was never activated, only the commercial SSH server supported it.
  • However, the Roaming feature is on by default, and due to a but a malicious server can exploit the bug to read memory from the client when it tries to connect to the server
  • This includes the ability to steal your SSH private keys
  • “The authentication of the server host key prevents exploitation by a man-in-the-middle, so this information leak is restricted to connections to malicious or compromised servers.”
  • Because OpenSSH checks the host key of the remote server, if you are connecting to trusted servers, there is no risk
  • You can disable the feature by adding the following line to your /etc/ssh/ssh_config: UseRoaming no
  • The feature can also be disabled on a per-user basis using: ~/.ssh/config
  • The patch just disabled this feature by default
  • CVE-2016-0778
  • A buffer overflow (leading to file descriptor leak), can also be exploited by a rogue SSH server, but due to another bug in the code is possibly not exploitable, and only under certain conditions (not the default configuration), when using ProxyCommand, ForwardAgent or ForwardX11.
  • Both of these vulnerabilities are fixed in OpenSSH 7.1p2
  • It is not clear if the roaming support will be removed entirely
  • Researcher Post

Bug in Intel Skylake CPUs means complex workloads can hang the machine

  • Intel has confirmed that its Skylake processors suffer from a bug that can cause a system to freeze when performing complex workloads.
  • The bug was reportedly discovered and tested by the the community at hardwareluxx.de and passed onto GIMPS (Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search), which conducted further testing. Both groups passed their findings onto Intel.
  • Intel states:

“Intel has identified an issue that potentially affects the 6th Gen Intel Core family of products. This issue only occurs under certain complex workload conditions, like those that may be encountered when running applications like Prime95. In those cases, the processor may hang or cause unpredictable system behaviour.”

  • Intel has developed a fix, and is working with hardware partners to distribute it via a BIOS update.
  • No reason has been given as to why the bug occurs, but it’s confirmed to affect both Linux and Windows-based systems.
  • While the bug was discovered using Prime95, it could affect other industries that rely on complex computational workloads, such as scientific and financial institutions.
  • Recently, Intel’s Haswell and early Broadwell processors suffered from a TSX (Transactional Synchronization Extensions) bug. Rather than recall the parts, Intel disabled the TSX instructions via a microcode update delivered via new motherboard firmware.

New WiFi spec for IoT devices, WiFi HaLow likely has all the classic issues

  • “The new protocol is based on the 802.11ah standard from the IEEE and is being billed as Wi-Fi HaLow by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Wi-Fi HaLow differs from the wireless signal that most current devices uses in a couple of key ways. First, it’s designed as a low-powered protocol and will operate in the range below one gigahertz. Second, the protocol will have a much longer range than traditional Wi-Fi, a feature that will make it attractive for use in applications such as connecting traffic lights and cameras in smart cities.”
  • There is also talk of using it for wearables, I suppose as a replacement for bluetooth
  • “Wi-Fi HaLow is well suited to meet the unique needs of the Smart Home, Smart City, and industrial markets because of its ability to operate using very low power, penetrate through walls, and operate at significantly longer ranges than Wi-Fi today,” said Edgar Figueroa, president and CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance.
  • “But, as with any new protocol or system, Wi-Fi HaLow will carry with it new security considerations to face. And one of the main challenges will be securing all of the various implementations of the protocol. Device manufacturers all implement things in their own way and in their own time, a practice that has led to untold security vulnerabilities and innumerable billable hours for security consultants. Security experts don’t expect Wi-Fi HaLow to be the exception.”
  • “While the standard could be good and secure, implementations by different vendors can have weaknesses and security issues. This is common to all protocols,” said Cesar Cerrudo, CTO of IOActive Labs, who has done extensive research on the security of a wide range of smart devices and smart city environments
  • Who could possibly be worse at implementing security, than the vendors and government contractors that would be used for a “smart city”
  • “Many of the devices that may use the new protocol–which isn’t due for release for a couple of years–are being manufactured by companies that aren’t necessarily accustomed to thinking about threat modeling, potential attacks, and other issues that computer hardware and software makers have had to face for decades. That could lead to simple implementation problems that attackers can take advantage of.”
  • This seems to call for a nice clean BSD licensed implementation, although even then, everyone using the same implementation could be just as risky
  • Plus, as we have seen, most vendors will ship an old insecure version, rather than the latest, and won’t update the implementation as they iterate their product
  • The extended range of HaLow also means that attackers can come from much further away, making it harder to physically protect devices
  • “Each new iteration in technology brings with it fresh security and privacy considerations, and the proliferation of connected non-computing devices is no different. The concept of a voice-enabled hub that controls your home’s climate, entertainment, and other systems is now a reality, as is the ability to send an email from your refrigerator. That’s all well and good, until these smart devices start doing really dumb things.”

Microsoft is ready to unleash Xbox One apps | The Verge

Microsoft is planning to open up its Xbox One apps platform in a big way this summer. While the software maker has remained consistently quiet around its timing for cross-platform (universal) apps running on its gaming console, sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company will start to allow more and more apps on the Xbox One by the end of the year. Microsoft is planning to detail its plans fully at the company’s Build developer conference in April, but we understand they’ll involve allowing developers to turn retail Xbox One units into developer kits.

Amazon announces plans to make movies for theaters, Prime streaming

Amazon Studios is going to start making movies, and you’ll be seeing them in theaters before they become available for streaming on Prime.Fresh off Golden Globe wins for its original series Transparent, the company today announced it will produce and acquire full-length feature films for theatrical release. Amazon Original Movies, which “focus on unique stories, voices, and characters from top and up-and-coming creators,” will become available to US Prime subscribers just 4 to 8 weeks after they premiere in theaters — a shorter transition to streaming than you’d see from the major movie studios.

And Amazon’s not exactly starting small; it plans to produce up to 12 movies each year as part of the new initiative, and those efforts will kick off in earnest later this year. “Not only will we bring Prime Instant Video customers exciting, unique, and exclusive films soon after a movie’s theatrical run, but we hope this program will also benefit filmmakers, who too often struggle to mount fresh and daring stories that deserve an audience,” said Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios.

Report: NSA not only creates, but also hijacks, malware

One of the secret documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and published by Der Spiegel contains details about a covert NSA program called DEFIANTWARRIOR that’s used to hijack botnet computers and use them as “pervasive network analysis vantage points” and “throw-away non-attributable CNA [computer network attack] nodes.”

This means that if a user’s computer is infected by cybercriminals with some malware, the NSA might step in, deploy their own malware alongside it and then use that computer to attack other interesting targets. Those attacks couldn’t then be traced back to the NSA.

According to the leaked document, this is only done for foreign computers. Bots that are based in the U.S. are reported to the FBI Office of Victim Assistance.

Sometimes the NSA also uses the servers of unsuspecting third parties as scapegoats, Der Spiegel reported. When exfiltrating data from a compromised system, the data is sent to such servers, but it is then intercepted and collected en route though the NSA’s vast upstream surveillance network.

Nixie wearable camera drone wins $500k in Intel tech contest

Beating nine other entries in the final, the US-based team behind the awesome wrist-based flying camera took to the stage at a special ceremony in San Francisco on Monday to collect the $500,000 prize money.

Nixie only requires a flick of the arm, at which point it unfolds from your wrist, flies off, takes your picture, and returns. Open up your smartphone and staring back at you will be your just-snapped image.

Google’s Nexus Player: More prototype than finished product | Ars Technica

The Nexus Player has 3 components. For $99, you get the set-top box and remote control, while another $40 gets you the optional Nexus Player Gamepad. The total package is a $105 premium over the $35 Google Chromecast, but the Chromecast is just a streaming stick. While the Nexus Player supports Google Cast (the retconned name for the Chromecast protocol), it also brings a dedicated TV interface along with local apps and games. In other words, it’s a smartphone for your television.

Inside the box puck is a 1.8GHz Intel Atom (Silvermont) processor, a PowerVR Series6 GPU, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. Dual-band 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi provides connectivity, along with Bluetooth LE 4.0. While Android TV supports Ethernet, the Nexus Player doesn’t.

The worst part of the remote is that it likes to randomly stop working. You’ll be clicking along the interface and everything will just stop, which means it’s time to get up, flip the box over, hit the Bluetooth pairing button, and then hold home+back to set the remote to pairing mode. We had to do this three times in about two hours.

Given the emphasis on apps, that 8GB of storage is a disaster, though. After the OS and pre-installed apps, you’ve got about 5GB of storage free out of the box. Let’s install some games!

All the videos we tested from several sources (YouTube, Google Play, Netflix) would drop frames. The frame drops are seemingly random, too, as if the Nexus Player is just fast enough to run 1080p content at a smooth framerate but then the OS decides to do something in the background and things start to slow down.

U.K. Spy Agency Chief Goes Public With Anti-Encryption Appeal To U.S. Tech Companies | TechCrunch

Writing in the Financial Times newspaper, GCHQ’s Robert Hannigan claims that “privacy has never been an absolute right” and warns that the terrorist group ISIS has “embraced the Internet as a noisy channel in which to promote itself, intimidate people, and radicalise new recruits”.

Hannigan’s initial argument focuses on how ISIS is using social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook as propaganda platforms

“I understand why they have an uneasy relationship with governments,” he writes of U.S. tech firms. “They aspire to be neutral conduits of data and to sit outside or above politics. But increasingly their services not only host the material of violent extremism or child exploitation, but are the routes for the facilitation of crime and terrorism.

“However much they may dislike it, they have become the command-and-control networks of choice for terrorists and criminals, who find their services as transformational as the rest of us.

Valve shows off updated VR headset prototype with Dota 2 demo

Valve’s prototype unit looks a lot like Oculus’ recently demoed Crystal Cove test unit. It’s a black wrap-around device covered with white IR-reflective dots. A separate camera uses those dots to keep tabs on how the wearer is moving his or her head. This allows for much more accurate motion tracking and a better immersive experience than simply using accelerometers and gyroscopes in the device itself. The last prototype, which was demoed in a very limited fashion, used QR codes and a camera attached to the visor to improve tracking.

Safer email – Transparency Report – Google

Gmail has always supported encryption in transit by using Transport Layer Security (TLS), and will automatically encrypt your incoming and outgoing emails if it can. The important thing is that both sides of an email exchange need to support encryption for it to work; Gmail can\’t do it alone.

Our data show that approximately 40 to 50 percent of emails sent between Gmail and other email providers aren’t encrypted.

Amazon/Hachette dispute unlikely to provoke regulators, experts say

Amazon has delayed the delivery of some Hachette Book Group titles and even removed an option to pre-order \”The Silkworm,\” by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling writing as Robert Galbraith. Hachette, the fourth largest U.S. book publisher, is owned by France\’s Lagadere SCA.

By some estimates, today Amazon controls around 50 percent of all book sales—physical and electronic—in the U.S. In the past decade, the company has steadily grown that market share, taking it from Barnes & Noble (shrinking), Borders (bankrupt since 2011), and independent bookstores (around 2,000 remain today out of the nearly 7,000 there were in the mid-1990s).

This morning, the online streaming market exploded as Amazon landed a nut-punch to Netflix by announcing their own streaming service. FREE for Amazon Prime members. Netflix quickly responded with an announcement of their own, revealing a partnership with CBS.

Tonight, we’re taking a closer look at each of these announcements, and seeing how they really stack up against one another. Is Amazon priming up to knock Netflix from the top dog position as King of Streaming? Or can Netflix withstand the punishment?

Show Feeds:

Show Notes:

Amazon.com launches free media streaming for Prime members

  • More than 5,000 movies & TV shows will become available
  • More than 65 million visitors log on to the company’s site each month
  • Amazon Prime also offers free 2-day shipping on most products
  • Some doubt the future of content availability, but others are optimistic since Amazon has had a long-term relationship with many studios as a DVD distributor.

CBS and Netflix announce 2-year licensing partnership for entire library

  • A few titles included: Frasier, Cheers, Medium, Flashpoint, Family Ties, Hawaii 5-0, Twin Peaks.
  • And of course, STAR TREK. All of it?
  • This service will launch in early April.
    • Reactive, premature announcement due to Amazon’s release? YES.

Cost and Tech Comparisons:

  • Amazon Prime requires annual contracts, paid in 12-month lump sum.
  • Netflix can be cancelled at any time, but costs slightly more per month.
  • Amazon can stream to Android devices, Netflix cannot.
  • Amazon already owns the infrastructure to deliver this tech, Netflix has to rent it (sometimes from Amazon!)
  • Amazon is launching with “more than 5000 titles” while Netflix had more than 12,000 titles as of TWO YEARS AGO.
