Recreational cannabis business opened their doors this week in Washington state, we’ll give you our local report and discuss some of the issues that aren’t getting much attention, and of course the ones that are.

Plus a big new batch of NSA revelations hit over the weekend, including Greenwald’s long awaited revelation. The two stories are important, but was Greenwald’s big story a bit of a bust? We round up the latest overreaches, violations, and lies that have been exposed in just the last week.

German paper reports second German spy working for US | News | DW.DE | 09.07.2014

Citing its own information as well as sources from German public broadcasters WDR and NDR on Wednesday, the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) reports that officials from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Agency (BKA) and the public prosecutor’s office are conducting a search in the apartment of a Berlin man. There is initial suspicion that the man is working as a spy.

The federal prosecutor’s office has confirmed that a search is under way.

The SZ reports that Wednesday’s investigation is being seen by observers as “more serious” than a different investigation that began last week. In that case, officials are
investigating a man who admitted to delivering documents to the CIA two years ago in exchange for 25,000 euros.

According to the paper, the two cases are independent of each other.

US ‘kidnaps’ Russian MP’s son to ‘exchange him for Snowden’

A Russian MP claims the US kidnapped his son from the Maldives on bogus cyber-fraud charges and may be preparing to offer him as bait in a swap deal for Edward Snowden.

Roman Seleznyov, 30, was arrested at Male international airport
as he was about to board a flight to Moscow. He was forced by US
secret service agents to board a private plane to Guam and was
later arrested. The Russian ministry slammed his detention as
“a de-facto kidnapping.”

Moscow considers the kidnapping “a new hostile move by
Washington,”
and accused the US of ignoring proper procedure
in dealing with foreign nationals suspected of crimes.

“The same happened to Viktor Bout and Konstantin Yaroshenko, who were forced to go
to the US from third countries and convicted on dubious
charges.”

Snowden Asks Russia to Extend Asylum – NYTimes.com

Anatoly G. Kucherna, the attorney, said that he had requested from the Moscow branch of the Federal Migration Service that Mr. Snowden be permitted to remain in Russia after his initial one-year asylum expires on July 31.

“We have submitted documents for extending his stay in Russia,” Mr. Kucherna was quoted as saying by Interfax.

And, since Cory said it, I do not believe that this came from the Snowden documents. I also don’t believe the TAO catalog came from the Snowden documents. I think there’s a second leaker out there.

Wall Street Joins U.S. Intelligence Cronies To Form Fascist “Cyber War Council”

The man behind the push appears to be ex-NSA chief Keith Alexander, who as I reported on last month, is now Pimping Advice to Wall Street Banks for $1 Million a Month. As I mentioned in that post, one of Mr. Alexander’s most high profile clients is Wall Street’s largest lobbying group the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Unsurprisingly, SIFMA is behind the latest push to formally merge Wall Street with the government intelligence apparatus. Mr. Alexander isn’t wasting any time.

Bloomberg reports that:

Wall Street’s biggest trade group has proposed a government-industry cyber war council to stave off terrorist attacks that could trigger financial panic by temporarily wiping out account balances, according to an internal document.

The proposal by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, known as Sifma, calls for a committee of executives and deputy-level representatives from at least eight U.S. agencies including the Treasury Department, the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security, all led by a senior White House official.

More centralization. This is the exact opposite of what we want or need. The establishment is very worried about the trend toward decentralization, and making its move on many fronts.

The trade association also reveals in the document that Sifma has retained former NSA director Keith Alexander to “facilitate” the joint effort with the government. Alexander, in turn, has brought in Michael Chertoff, the former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, and his firm, Chertoff Group.

Marijuana shortages could have Washington stores, customers wondering: Where’s the weed?

Oliver is the chief scientist at Analytical 360 in Yakima, the only lab that has been certified to test the heavily taxed marijuana that will wind up on store shelves next month. So far, just two licensed growers have turned in samples for testing, with another due to turn in a small batch next week, he told The Associated Press on Saturday.

“There’s such a small stream of samples coming through,” he said. “There’s going to be some long lines and some high prices.”

Germany opens inquiry into claims NSA tapped Angela Merkel\’s phone

Germany\’s federal prosecutor has defied public expectations by opening an investigation into the alleged tapping of Angela Merkel\’s mobile phone by the US\’s National Security Agency (NSA).

Federal prosecutor Harald Range announced on Wednesday: \”I informed parliament\’s legal affairs committee that I have started a preliminary investigation over tapping of a mobile phone of the chancellor.\”

Most Americans Think Snowden Did the Right Thing, Poll Says

According to a survey commissioned by cloud storage service Tresorit.

The survey found that 55 percent of respondents think Snowden did the right thing in exposing PRISM, the mass data-mining program, while another 29 percent believe he was in the wrong, and 16 percent endorse neither statement. Of Snowden\’s supporters, 80 percent said he exposed constitutional violations.

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

Here\’s some Recent Hostage Negotiations:

  • After the North Koreans captured the U.S.S. Pueblo in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson apologized for spying as part of negotiations to secure the release of 83 American prisoners.

  • In 1970, President Richard Nixon pressured Israel, Switzerland, West Germany and Britain to release Palestinian prisoners after two airlines were hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

  • During the Iran hostage crisis of 1979 to 1981, President Jimmy Carter agreed to unfreeze $8 billion in frozen Iranian assets after more than a year of negotiations with the Iranian revolutionaries.

  • In perhaps the most famous swap, after seven Americans were captured in Beirut, Lebanon, President Ronald Reagan agreed to send missiles to Iran in what became known as the Iran-Contra scandal.

  • President Bill Clinton\’s administration sat down with Hamas in attempts to negotiate peace with Israel. His administration also worked directly with the Taliban nearly two decades ago on several occasions to see if the group would hand over Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaida leaders.

  • Ronald Reagan, the president who really negotiated with terrorists

Iran-Contra, as you\’ll recall, almost laid waste to the Reagan presidency. Desperate to free U.S. hostages held by Iranian proxies in Lebanon, President Reagan provided weapons Tehran badly needed in its long war with Saddam Hussein (who, of course, was backed by the United States). In a clumsy and illegal attempt to skirt U.S. law, the proceeds of those sales were then funneled to the contras fighting the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. And as the New York Times recalled, Reagan\’s fiasco started with an emissary bearing gifts from the Gipper himself

Just as you have a responsibility to your country under the Code of Conduct, the United States government has an equal responsibility**** — ****to keep faith with you and stand by you as you fight for your country. If you are unfortunate enough to become a prisoner of war, you may rest assured that your government will care for your dependents and will never forget you. Furthermore, the government will use every practical means to contact, support and gain release for you and for all other prisoners of war.

Insane in the Ukraine:

Conflicting accounts in heightened eastern Ukraine fighting – CNN.com

A Ukrainian government spokesman claimed that more than 300 pro-Russia militants had been killed and at least 500 wounded during an ongoing Ukrainian military operation in the towns of Krasny Liman and Slovyansk.

The self-declared separatist mayor of Slovyansk, however, said only 10 separatist fighters had died and 12 were injured in the fighting.

CNN could not immediately confirm either report.

But a CNN investigation in Luhansk has found clear evidence that whatever detonations hit the building and the adjoining park came from the air. The tops of trees were splintered, and a series of small craters — about a dozen — had been blasted in a straight line, starting in the park and reaching the walls of the building, blowing out many of its windows and spraying the area with jagged shrapnel. That\’s what appears to have killed most of the victims and injured 20 more.

The pattern of the craters clearly indicated some sort of strafing, according to a munitions expert at the scene with CNN. Their size suggested 30-millimeter ordnance, he said, which is standard equipment on the Su-25, a ground attack fighter, and the Su-27 — both combat aircraft operated by Ukraine.

Obama vows to stand with Ukraine as he meets Poroshenko in Poland – CNN.com

U.S. President Barack Obama voiced his support for Ukraine\’s newly elected president and called for the international community to \”stand solidly behind\” him Wednesday, on a visit to Europe dominated by the crisis in Ukraine.

U.S. reaffirms: No weapons will go to Ukraine

State Department spokesman Jen Psaki reiterated this week that \”we\’ll continue to review their requests\” but that the U.S. policy hasn\’t changed regarding lethal weapons. When asked by a reporter here Tuesday whether the U.S. will provide such aid, Obama pointed out that during the Crimea crisis the U.S. provided non-lethal assistance.

A violent Monday evening car crash on State Route 2 in Snohomish County injured eight people, including five children.

Washington State Patrol troopers said the causing driver had smoked marijuana earlier in the day and she has since been arrested.

Maureen Dowd on pot candy bar: \’I became convinced that I had died\’

In Maureen Dowd\’s latest column for the New York Times, she describes her scary experience eating a pot candy bar while reporting on legalized marijuana in Colorado.

She sat in a Denver hotel room experimenting with the legalized edible, \”nibbling\” on some of the chocolate-flavored bar.

\”For an hour, I felt nothing […] But then I felt a scary shudder go through my body and brain. I barely made it from the desk to the bed, where I lay curled up in a hallucinatory state for the next eight hours,\” Dowd said.

She goes on to explain how her paranoia deepened, saying the high wore off \”distressingly slowly.\”

\”I had been convinced that I had died and no one was telling me,\” Dowd said.

Not counting medicinal weed sales, Colorado sold nearly $19 million in their recreational weed market in the month of March, and $1.9 million of that goes straight into government coffers and towards building schools.

The legislation smoked through the Republican-dominated House with a 218-189 vote in favor of the bill Friday. The bill\’s suprising majority vote represents increasingly joint views about federal oversight of state medical marijuana laws between Democrats and Republicans. The vote also reflects public opinion. The ratio of Americans in favor of medical marijuana is high at 73 percent, according to a Pew Research study.

TrueCrypt Hacked?

\"TrueCrypt

  • The binary on the website is capable only to decode encrypted data, not encode, and may contain trojan (although I didn\’t find any, but don\’t believe me). The binary is signed with the valid (usual) key. All old versions are wiped, the repository is wiped too.

\"TrueCrypt

Assumption #1 The website is presumed hacked, the keys are presumed compromised. Please do not download or run it. And please don\’t switch to bitlocker.

Latest working version is 7.1a. Version 7.2 is a hoax

  • On the SourceForge, the keys were changed before any TrueCrypt files uploaded, but now they are deleted and the old keys got reverted back.

Why I think so: strange key change, DNS record changed, why bitlocker?

Assumption #2 Something bad happened to TrueCrypt developers (i.e. take down or death) or to TrueCrypt itself (i.e. found the worst vulnerability ever) which made them do such a thing. So this version is legit

Why I think so: all files are with valid signatures, all the releases are available (Windows; Linux x86, x86_64, console versions, Mac OS, sources), the binaries seems like was built on the usual developer PC (there are some paths like c:\\truecrypt-7.2\\driver\\obj_driver_release\\i386\\truecrypt.pdb, which were the same for 7.1a).

  • SourceForge sent emails on 22 May, they said they changed password algorithms and everybody should change their passwords.

  • TrueCrypt developers are unknown and currently there is no way to know who is who and who should we listen to.

  • From wikileaks twitter https://twitter.com/wikileaks/status/471769936038461440:

(1/4) Truecrypt has released an update saying that it is insecure and development has been terminated https://truecrypt.sf.net

(2/4) the style of the announcement is very odd; however we believe it is likely to be legitimate and not a simple defacement

(3/4) the new executable contains the same message and is cryptographically signed. We believe that there is either a power conflict..

(4/4) in the dev team or psychological issues, coersion of some form, or a hacker with access to site and keys.

@SteveBellovin @mattblaze @0xdaeda1a I think this is legit.

\"Eds

After wrapping up my presentation, Snowden connected his laptop to the projector and began talking about using the TrueCrypt software for encrypting hard drives and USB sticks on Macs, Linux and Windows. He pointed out that while the only known name associated with TrueCrypt is someone in the Czech Republic, TrueCrypt is one of the best open-source solutions available.

Snowden continued with TrueCrypt\’s _\”hidden volumes\”, a feature that divides your encrypted storage into separate \”volumes\” with separate passwords. If you are coerced by authorities into revealing the password for your \”encrypted storage\” you need only reveal the password for the volume with the least incriminating content — one containing pictures of cats, maybe?_

The Lies Mike Rogers Told Congress About The USA Freedom Act

\"Rogers

One of the most obvious ways that you knew the USA Freedom Act that passed out of the House yesterday was clearly not real NSA reform was the simple fact that the NSA #1 defender in chief, Rep. Mike Rogers, not only voted for it, but spoke strongly in favor of it on the House floor.

\"Brian

\”I was trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word — in that I lived and worked undercover, overseas, pretending to work in a job that I\’m not — and even being assigned a name that was not mine,\” Snowden said.

Kerry: Snowden a \”Coward\” and \”Traitor\” ](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/kerry-snowden-coward-traitor-n116366)

“Edward Snowden is a coward, he is a traitor and he has betrayed his country,” Kerry said in an interview on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown” with Chuck Todd. “And if he wants to come home tomorrow to face the music, he can do so.”

\”If this man is a patriot, he should stay in the United States and make his case,\” he said. \”Patriots don\’t go to Russia, they don\’t seek asylum in Cuba, they don\’t seek asylum in Venezuela, they fight their cause here.\”

Afghanistan Late Pullout

White House mistakenly identifies CIA chief in Afghanistan

The CIA\’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama\’s surprise visit with U.S. troops.

The Post is withholding the name of the CIA officer at the request of Obama administration officials who warned that the officer and his family could be at risk if the name were published. The CIA and the White House declined to comment.

White House: U.S. will have 9,800 troops in Afghanistan after 2014

The U.S. will leave 9,800 troops in the country in 2015 with two narrow missions, according to the White House: continue supporting Afghan forces, who took the lead ins securing the country last year, and continuing to support counter terrorism operations against the remnants of al Qaeda.

Comey: FBI ‘Grappling’ With Hiring Policy Concerning Marijuana

\"FBI

Congress has authorized the FBI to add 2,000 personnel to its rolls this year, and many of those new recruits will be assigned to tackle cyber crimes, a growing priority for the agency. And that\’s a problem, Mr. Comey told the White Collar Crime Institute, an annual conference held at the New York City Bar Association in Manhattan. A lot of the nation\’s top computer programmers and hacking gurus are also fond of marijuana.

\”I have to hire a great work force to compete with those cyber criminals and some of those kids want to smoke weed on the way to the interview,\” Mr. Comey said.

Mr. Comey said that the agency was \”grappling with the question right now\” of how to amend the agency\’s marijuana policies, which excludes from consideration anyone who has smoked marijuana in the previous three years, according to the FBI\’s Web site. One conference goer asked Mr. Comey about a friend who had shied away from applying because of the policy. \”He should go ahead and apply,\” despite the marijuana use, Mr. Comey said.

The FBI Says It Can\’t Find Hackers to Hire Because They All Smoke Pot

After being chastised for his comments about marijuana by Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), FBI director Comey told those in attendance at a senate hearing on the bureau\’s oversight that he was just kidding.

Violence in Egypt Over the Weekend

A coalition of human rights liberals and conservatives opposed to foreign aid is gaining strength. In mid-July, Senate Republicans John McCain and Lindsey Graham, two party leaders on foreign policy, called canceling military aid “right and necessary.” Though, Graham said Tuesday he’s reserving final judgment until he and McCain return next week from a trip to Egypt at President Obama’s behest.

In a twist that television industry gawkers immediately homed in on, the victory was shared by Ms. Sawyer and one of her regular fill-ins, David Muir. That was because Mr. Muir substituted for Ms. Sawyer three nights last week — the same three nights, it turned out, that ABC beat NBC in the all-important ratings demographic. Mr. Williams prevailed, barely, on the two nights that Ms. Sawyer was at work.

Manning Not Aiding the Enemy – Faces Years in Prison

A military judge on Tuesday found U.S. soldier Bradley Manning not guilty of aiding the enemy, the most serious charge he faced for handing over documents to WikiLeaks, but he still likely faces a long jail term after being found guilty of 19 other counts.

One of Manning’s most visible supporters was banned from the trial Friday after the judge said someone posted threats online. Clark Stoeckley, a college art instructor from New Jersey, confirmed he was the one booted.

Stoeckley attended the court-martial as a sketch artist, arriving each day in a white box truck with bold words painted on the sides: “WikiLeaks TOP SECRET Mobile Information Collection Unit.”

A tweet Thursday night from an account Stoeckley used said: “I don’t know how they sleep at night but I do know where.” It was removed Friday and Stoeckley told The Associated Press on Twitter he couldn’t comment.

During Bradley Manning’s trial in Fort Meade, Maryland, many of the soldier’s supporters showed up during the trial to back the whistleblower for revealing one of the biggest data leaks in US history, but last Friday Clark Stoeckley, courtroom sketch artist, was banned for one of his tweets.

NSA is Crazy

From Greenwald:

XKeyscore provides the technological capability, if not the legal authority, to target even US persons for extensive electronic surveillance without a warrant provided that some identifying information, such as their email or IP address, is known to the analyst.

Furthermore, Greenwald reports that analysts can use XKeyscore and other NSA systems “to obtain ongoing ‘real-time’ interception of an individual’s internet activity.”

Training materials for the XKeyscore program detail how analysts can use it and other systems to mine enormous agency databases and develop intelligence from the web

Some highlights:

“Performs strong (e.g. email) and soft (content) selection.” pg 2

“Provides real-time target activity.” pg 2

“Show me all the VPN startups in country X, and give me the data so I can decrypt and discover the users” pg 17

“Show me all the exploitable machines in country X” pg 24

According to one of the 11 judges that sits on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), no corporation ever served with a “business record” court order under the Patriot Act has ever challenged one, even though the law provides them a means to do so.

Sen. Ron Wyden said Tuesday that U.S. intelligence agencies’ violations of court orders on surveillance of Americans is worse than the government is letting on.

Wyden (D-Ore.), as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, is privy to classified briefings on the government’s surveillance. On Tuesday, he told Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC that all he could say is that the violations are worse than being made public.

• XKeyscore gives ‘widest-reaching’ collection of online data
• NSA analysts require no prior authorization for searches
• Sweeps up emails, social media activity and browsing history
NSA’s XKeyscore program – read one of the presentations

United States Representative Mike Rogers serves as the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The Committee is the House’s primary panel responsible for authorizing the funding for and overseeing the execution of the intelligence activities of the United States government.

General Keith Alexander Visits Black Hat

Alexander’s talk had begun with a plea for the hacker and security researcher community to reconsider the NSA’s role in the wake of a still-unfolding scandal revealed by the classified leaks of former Booz Allen contractor Edward Snowden. “Their reputation has been tarnished,” he said, speaking of his NSA staff. “But you can help us articulate the facts properly. I will answer every question to the fullest extent possible, and I promise you the truth: What I know, what we’re doing, and what I cannot tell you because we don’t want to jeopardize the future of our defense.”

After the talk, I found McCoy in the crowd and asked him about his not-so-friendly debate with the general. “His speech was pretty canned,” said McCoy. “It’s anything you can see on Fox News any day. We’re in danger, we have to get rid of your freedom to keep you safe.”

“Everyone’s thinking this, but no one’s saying it public, so everyone thinks they’re alone,” he said. “Ninety-eight percent of society has issues with this…But no one speaks up.”

He attempted to reassure a skeptical audience by saying “our people have to take courses and pass exams to use this data.” Data from the interception programs has “provided value” across some 53 “terror-related activities” detected by the NSA.

Where in the World is Snowden

In a letter sent this week, US attorney general Eric Holder told his Russian counterpart that the charges faced by Snowden do not carry the death penalty. Holder added that the US “would not seek the death penalty even if Mr Snowden were charged with additional, death penalty-eligible crimes”.

Holder said he had sent the letter, addressed to Alexander Vladimirovich, Russia’s minister of justice, in response to reports that Snowden had applied for temporary asylum in Russia “on the grounds that if he were returned to the United States, he would be tortured and would face the death penalty”.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said Sunday that Edward Snowden’s actions defy logic.

By granting NSA leaker Edward Snowden temporary asylum, Russia is giving itself time to figure out what their best move is, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday.

What has happened to NSA whistleblower who leaked files to Guardian since he decided to reveal his identity to the world and began his asylum battle

Germany, France outraged by US ‘Cold War’ spying web

The report, carried by Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, cites a secret 2010 document alleging that the US spied on EU offices in New York and Washington.

Europe’s reeling from revelations that its leaders and citizens have been targeted by U.S. wiretapping and mass surveillance. That information was leaked to the German media – and the American ambassador there has been summoned for an explanation. RT is joined by Lizzie Phelan, newsroom chief at RT’s video agency in Berlin, Ruptly. RT is also joined by French journalist and blogger Jean Marc Manach.

“The documents prove that Germany played a central role in the NSA’s global surveillance network – and how the Germans have also become targets of U.S. attacks,” Der Spiegel reported. “Each month, the U.S. intelligence service saves data from around half a billion communications connections from Germany.”

France wants to delay the ‘biggest bilateral trade deal in history’ by 2 weeks after learning the USA was allegedly tracking economic communications of EU member states. But Germany says they should go ahead as planned.

At Tuesday’s press conference in the capital Quito, minister Patino said that the hidden listening device was found during a regular security check by the Ecuadorian intelligence for the Ecuadorian embassy in the UK on June 16.

The microphone was found in the office of the ambassador Ana Alban.

“We immediately conducted an investigation to find the source and I will release our result at tomorrow’s press conference including the source of the device, who was using it and which department installed it”, Patino told reporters.

Where in the World is Snowden

Vice President Biden has asked Ecuador to turn down an asylum request from National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, the country’s president said Saturday.

Rafael Correa said he had a “friendly and very cordial” conversation with Biden, and told the vice president that Ecuador hadn’t sought to be put in the situation of deciding whether to harbor an American fugitive. Correa said Ecuador can’t consider the asylum request until Snowden is on Ecuadorean soil.

White House officials have said in recent days that in their contacts with foreign governments about Mr. Snowden, they have warned those governments about the felony charges that Mr. Snowden faced in the United States and urged that they not further aid his international flight.

Showdown: Egypt

CAIRO – Egyptian military leaders on Wednesday said they were suspending the constitution, and they replaced President Mohamed Morsi with the head of the nation’s constitutional court.

The Egyptian military released new images taken from the skies above Cairo during this weekend’s huge anti-government protests. Hundreds of thousands of protesters can be seen gathered at Tahrir Square and the Ittihadiya presidential palace. (July 2)

About 30 RCMP officers set up a blockade at the checkpoint, preventing 50 residents from walking into the town. Dozens more police cars, lights on, could be seen lining streets in the town on standby.

In the wake of the NSA leaks we’re being told to trust the government with our simple data, it’s the leaker we need to worry about. Edward Snowden takes to the web to defend his name, while the top officials in US intelligence answer softball questions read from prepared statements.

This week, we’ll examine the claims, scrutinize the testimonies, and bring you up-to-date on the largest invasion of words privacy we’ve ever seen.

Plus the FBI admits to operating Drones within the US, your feedback, and much much more!

Right and Left Attack Snowden

As usual, the media has decided that, instead of looking at the problems of the NSA spying on it own citizens and the entire scandal surrounding it, it has taken to attacks on Edward Snowden, the whistleblower behind the leaks. The Guardian article presented the facts and didn’t speculate on Snowden or his character because it isn’t a necessary part of the story. Other media outlets, however, are ignoring the massive violations to the constitution that the NSA has committed and decided to participate in ad hominem attacks.

Edward Snowden burst in public view when the 29-year-old identified himself as the source of leaks about the National Security Agency’s surveillance of Americans. Here are 10 things to know about Snowden.

Snowden Holds Online Chat

Edward Snowden, who acknowledged leaking top-secret documents about extensive U.S. surveillance of telephone calls and Internet communications, claimed in an unusual live Web chat Monday that he sees no possibility of a fair trial in the United States and suggested that he would try to elude authorities as long as possible.

Hearing Party

The National Security Agency and Justice Department mounted a vigorous defense of the government’s controversial surveillance efforts on Tuesday, with NSA chief Gen. Keith Alexander claiming they have helped prevent “potential terrorist events” over 50 times since 9/11.

The government has been passing around some “talking points” to politicians and the press trying to spin the NSA surveillance story. We’ve got the talking points about scooping up business records (i.e., all data on all phone calls) and on the internet program known as PRISM.

A recent briefing by senior intelligence officials on surveillance programs failed to attract even half of the Senate, showing the lack of enthusiasm in Congress for learning about classified security programs.

The director of the National Security Agency was overheard offering a round of beer to the FBI’s second-in-command following Tuesday’s congressional hearing on the NSA’s controversial surveillance programs.

Former NSA Employees Corroborate Ed’s Claims

USA Today has published an extraordinary interview with three former NSA employees who praise Edward Snowden’s leaks, corroborate some of his claims, and warn about unlawful government acts.

Thomas Drake, William Binney and J. Kirk Wiebe belong to a select fraternity: the NSA officials who paved the way.

For years, the three whistle-blowers had told anyone who would listen that the NSA collects huge swaths of communications data from U.S. citizens.

Done Update

Robert Mueller, the director of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation, confirmed to lawmakers that the FBI owns several
unmanned aerial vehicles, but has not adopted any strict policies
or guidelines yet to govern the use of the controversial
aircraft.
