Snowden Has Always Been ‘Ready’ to Return to the US

Ed Lookin Emo

Edward Snowden’s Russian lawyer reiterated today that Snowden is willing to return to the US, so long as he is given a fair trial, according to the AFP.

“He is thinking about it. He has a desire to return and we are doing everything we can to make it happen,” said Anatoly Kucherena, the AFP reports.

It may seem particularly notable that arguably the biggest whistleblower in the history of the US—and one of the few whose life hasn’t been completely ruined by coming forward—wants to come home. But this has long been Snowden’s stance. In an interview with the New Yorker in October, for example, the NSA whistleblower said he tried to negotiate with the US government to ensure a fair and open trial.

“The question there was: would the American justice system be open to that?” Snowden told the New Yorker. “I have told the government again and again in negotiations that if they’re prepared to offer an open trial, a fair trial, in the same way that Dan Ellsberg got, and I’m allowed to make my case to the jury, I would love to do so.”

Insignificant ‘Putin critic’ gunned down by someone who hates Putin

Boris Nemtsov was shot in the back last night as he walked with his Ukrainian girlfriend near the Kremlin in Moscow. Nemtsov ran unsuccessfully for office in 1989 before eventually being elected to Russia’s parliament in 1990. As deputy minister for economic reform under Yeltsin, he failed to actually deliver economic reform amid the August 1998 economic crisis and it cost him his job.

In 1999 he founded the Union of Right Forces (SPS), along with fellow liberals Anatoly Chubais and Yegor Gaidar. The SPS was directly sponsored by the US government (via USAID) in 2002, after which it became openly critical of Russia’s new President Putin (surprise!). This fact alone establishes Nemtsov and SPS as agents of Western efforts to destabilize Russia and therefore not representative of any significant section of the Russian people. Indeed, in the 2003 election, the SPS failed to reach even the 5% threshold needed to enter parliament.

Virginia teen accused of being ISIS recruiter

17 Year old ISIS Recruiter

A 17-year-old Virginia student has been charged with helping recruit for ISIS, federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

The teen, whose name was not disclosed, was taken into custody last week, the officials said.

Prosecutors are seeking to charge him as an adult but currently have charged him as a juvenile, one of the law enforcement officials said.

The case remains under seal. It was first reported by The Washington Post on Wednesday.

The Post, citing officials and neighbors, reported that investigators spent more than a month watching the teen and his home before he was arrested. The teen is a “brilliant kid,” a man who hired him to write for a website told the Post. “His English wasn’t perfect, but I was willing to overlook that because the content was great.”

The teen, who lives in a Virginia suburb of Washington, is accused of helping a slightly older adult travel to Syria. The adult is believed to have joined ISIS there, a separate law enforcement official said.

Hillary Clinton Ran Homebrew Computer System For Official Emails

Hill Dog Checkin the Crackberry

It was not immediately clear exactly where Clinton’s computer server was run, but a business record for the Internet connection it used was registered under the home address for her residence as early as August 2010. The customer was listed as Eric Hoteham.

An aide to then-first lady Clinton was identified in a 2002 congressional report as Eric Hothem, whose name is spelled differently than in the Internet records. Hothem, a financial adviser in Washington, was not available to take an AP reporter’s phone call at his office Wednesday. He was a special assistant to Clinton as far back as 1997 and considered one of the family’s information technology experts.

Operating her own server would have afforded Clinton additional legal opportunities to block government or private subpoenas in criminal, administrative or civil cases because her lawyers could object in court before being forced to turn over any emails. And since the Secret Service was guarding Clinton’s home, an email server there would have been well protected from theft or a physical hacking.

New revelations about Clinton’s personal email account are
continuing to complicate matters for the Democratic Party’s
presumed nominee for president. The New York Times first reported
on the “hdr22@clintonemail.com” email address used by Clinton
while secretary of state. This immediately prompted inquiries as
to why a government-sanctioned account wasn’t used. The Federal
Records Act requires government employees to use departmental
servers for communications.

By operating her own server, Clinton may have been able to take advantage of “additional legal opportunities to block government or private subpoenas in criminal, administrative or civil cases because her lawyers could object in court before being forced to turn over any emails,” the AP journalists said.

A House committee investigating the Benghazi, Libya, attacks issued subpoenas Wednesday for the emails of Hillary Rodham Clinton, who used a private account exclusively for official business when she was secretary of state — and also used a computer email server now traced back to her family’s New York home.

The first public sign of the email imbroglio now enveloping former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may have come more than a month ago in an obscure court filing in a lawsuit demanding details of Clinton’s response to the attacks on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya.

But all signs Tuesday pointed toward a protracted legal morass as advocacy groups, the courts and Congress try to determine whether Clinton’s practice denied them access to critical information during her four years in the Obama Cabinet and thereafter.

Clinton aides and State Department officials argued that the impact of her use of personal email on the government’s permanent files was limited because she turned over 55,000 pages of the emails in December at the department’s request. They also contend that most of Clinton’s work-related emails were preserved on work accounts used by other officials.

Insignificant ‘Putin critic’ gunned down by someone who hates Putin — Puppet Masters — Sott.net

Of course, the suggestion that Putin, with an 85% approval rating, would have thought it necessary to publicly assassinate a non-entity former politician who couldn’t muster 5% of the vote, on the doorstep of the Kremlin no less, and one day before an opposition rally in which the deceased was scheduled to take part, is utterly ridiculous**. The point being, by killing Nemtsov in this way, the reaction of Western governments and their media was always going to be as if Putin himself pulled the trigger and posted a selfie of the event on FB. Ergo, if, as the ranks of Western yellow journalists claim, Putin is responsible… where’s the freaking selfie!?? Maybe US State Dept. muppet Jen Psaki has it on her Facebook page?

NBC’s Brian Williams told varying versions of rocket fire in Israel-Hezbollah war

NBC News anchor Brian Williams certainly has placed himself in dangerous situations in covering wars and natural disasters over the years. But how much danger? With Williams, the answer varies.

In his words: Brian Williams’ interview with Stars and Stripes

Questions have also arisen around statements he made about reporting on Hurricane Katrina from New Orleans in 2005, and Israel’s war with the militant group Hezbollah in 2006.

Pentagon requests $534bn for 2016, largest ever war budget

The White House will be seeking $534 billion from Congress to run the Pentagon in 2016 — its largest budget ever.

However, a source told RT that the budget is actually closer to $1 trillion, and has been for several administrations.

Debate brews over whether Williams can survive controversy

Some critics suggest that Williams, who apologized last week for falsely claiming that he was in a helicopter that had been hit by a grenade while in Iraq in 2003, should be fired. Others wonder if commerce will win out, since Williams has kept “Nightly News” at the top of the ratings while much of his news division crumbled around him. How much are the years of good work worth?

“This is one of the toughest calls that I’ve ever seen,” said Paul Levinson, professor of communications and media studies at Fordham University. “On the one hand, the public is right to expect nothing but the truth from our reporters and our news anchors.”

Williams announced Saturday he was stepping away from the show for a few days. NBC News, which launched an internal probe, hasn’t given a timetable for how long its look into Williams’ statements, coordinated by the division’s investigative editor Richard Esposito, will take or if its report will be made public.

Williams’ sub, Lester Holt, told viewers midway through Monday’s broadcast that Williams had taken himself off the air because questions have been raised about how he recalled several stories. Holt did not specify what the stories or questions were.

“He’ll be off while this issue is dealt with,” Holt said.

Disciplined nuclear officers tops 16

The Air Force has fired or disciplined at least 16 nuclear missile commanders or senior officers for misconduct and other failings over the past year and a half, reflecting turmoil in arguably the military’s most sensitive mission.

Another who quit of his own accord lamented upon leaving, “We let the American people down on my watch.”

The latest to be dismissed this week: a colonel accused of “cruelty and maltreatment” of a subordinate and a missile squadron commander found to have illegally discriminated against women under his command. In addition to those actions Monday, another senior officer was administratively disciplined but not removed from command.

This string of leadership lapses has beset a force that remains central to American defense strategy but in some respects has been neglected. The force of 450 Minuteman 3 nuclear missiles is primed to unleash nuclear devastation on a moment’s notice.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is expected soon to announce the results of an independent review of problems in the nuclear force.

Snowden documents reveal British climate espionage – Copenhagen climate summit targeted | Information

Among others, the intelligence service targeted the most recent major UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, the COP15, held in December 2009.

US ends ban on ‘domestic propaganda’ — RT USA

The Smith-Mundt Act has ensured for decades that government-made media intended for foreign audiences doesn’t end up on radio networks broadcast within the US. An amendment tagged onto the National Defense Authorization Act removed that prohibition this year

The longstanding federal law made it illegal for the US Department of State to share domestically the internally-authored news stories sent to American-operated
outlets broadcasting around the globe. All of that changed effective July 2, when the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) was given permission to let US households tune-in to hear the
type of programming that has previously only been allowed in outside nations.

ISIS / ISIL

COLD WAR

But business concerns may not be the main driver of this Saudi oil policy. Instead, the Saudis may be flexing their muscular dominance of the world’s oil markets to advance geopolitical interests, from helping the energy-dependent military government of Egypt — a Saudi ally — to undermining the adversarial regimes in Syria and Iran as well as Russia, which has emerged as a key ally for those two embattled governments.

While falling oil prices certainly do hurt Saudi Arabia, the Saudis with their vast financial reserves are well-positioned to withstand the economic pain. That is less the case with Russia and Iran, both heavily invested in the defense of Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime. In other words, the Saudis may see the precipitous drop in oil prices as a weapon in the broader regional Shiite-Sunni proxy war, with Saudi Arabia leading the Sunni side versus Shiite-ruled Iran.

The depressed oil prices also dovetail with the Obama administration’s geopolitical interests by putting the squeeze on Russia and Iran as the West seeks to consolidate its control over Ukraine and tries to force Iran to capitulate in talks over its nuclear program.

But the Saudi geopolitical calculation to sustain record production above 9.5 million barrels per day is probably most directed at Syria where the Saudis have financed the Sunni-led campaign to overthrow Assad, who largely represents Alawite, Shiite, Christian and other minorities. By toppling Assad and replacing him with a Sunni-dominated government, Saudi Arabia would deal a severe blow to Iran and the region’s Shiites.

Thus, Saudi Arabia is willing to resist pressure from its partners in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries in order to advance what the Saudis see as their broader regional interests. For Riyadh, the self-inflicted economic pain is acceptable as long as it contributes to the broader imperative of inflicting pain on Assad and his backers.

Where America landed on marijuana

Voters legalize recreational pot in Oregon

Oregon becomes the third U.S. state to legalize recreational pot. With two-thirds of precincts reporting, legal pot lead the race by eight percentage points, 54 to 46.

Polls showed Measure 91 was extremely close heading into Election Day.

Opinions on the measure varied by age. The measure had support from 56 percent of voters under age 35, but only 30 percent support from voters older than 65, polls showed.

“It’s always an uphill battle to win a marijuana legalization initiative in a year like this, when young people are so much less likely to vote, which makes today’s victory all the sweeter,” said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “The pace of reform is accelerating, other states are sure to follow, and even Congress is poised to wake from its slumber.”

Under the measure, Oregonians 21 and older will be able to possess and smoke marijuana starting July 1 of 2015.

New highs: Marijuana now legal in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington, DC | The Verge

Voters in Alaska, Oregon, and the District of Columbia voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use Tuesday, following in the footsteps of Colorado and Washington, which legalized the drug in 2012. A ballot measure to legalize marijuana for medical purposes failed in Florida, the Associated Press reports, where voters failed to meet the 60 percent threshold needed to pass a constitutional amendment.

Edward Snowden’s girlfriend living with him in Moscow, film reveals | US news | theguardian.com

The mystery of the whereabouts of Edward Snowden’s long-time girlfriend is solved in a documentary that premiered in New York on Friday night: she has been living with the national security whistleblower in Russia since July.

The surprise revelation in the documentary, filmed by Laura Poitras, upends the widespread assumption that Snowden had deserted Lindsay Mills and that she, in a fit of pique, fled Hawaii where they had been living to stay with her parents in mainland US.

ISIS Update

Revisionist History 101: Bush Was Right About Iraq WMD! – The Intercept

The latest attempt came yesterday, when The New York Times published an explosive new story on American soldiers who were wounded while handling corroded munitions extracted from Saddam Hussein’s inactive chemical weapons program. The Iraq Study Group has long documented the existence of these decrepit and corroded weapons stocks in Iraq, something which has precisely nothing to do with the “Weapons of Mass Destruction” claims purveyed by war supporters.

The inconvenient truth is that the U.S. was aware of the existence of such weapons at the Al Muthanna site as far back as 1991. Why? Because Al Muthanna was the site where the UN ordered Saddam Hussein to dispose of his declared chemical munitions in the first place. Those weapons that could not safely be destroyed were sealed and left to decay on their own, which they did. The site was neither “active” nor “clandestine” — it was a declared munitions dump being used to hold the corroded weapons which Western powers themselves had in most cases helped Saddam procure.

NBC/WSJ Poll: Majority Say Ground Troops Needed to Fight ISIS

The newest poll shows that 41 percent of respondents think ground troops and airstrikes are necessary, compared with 35 percent who think the actions should be limited to airstrikes. Fifteen percent of those polled said no military action should be taken.

A month ago, just 34 percent — a seven-point difference — favored both airstrikes and combat troops, and 40 percent wanted just airstrikes.

ISIS Threat Top Concern for Republican Voters — WSJ/NBC Poll – Washington Wire – WSJ

In the survey, 41% of Republicans said acting on the ISIS threat is the most important issue in deciding their midterm vote. Just 18% of Democrats agreed, placing the issue fifth behind economic growth, breaking the partisan gridlock in Washington, health care and social security.

Tenants tell KOMO News they knew about the grow operation, but were told by the owners it was a legal business. ISIS Update

The Fake Terror Threat Used To Justify Bombing Syria – The Intercept

As the Obama Administration prepared to bomb Syria without congressional or U.N. authorization, it faced two problems. The first was the difficulty of sustaining public support for a new years-long war against ISIS, a group that clearly posed no imminent threat to the “homeland.” A second was the lack of legal justification for launching a new bombing campaign with no viable claim of self-defense or U.N. approval.

The solution to both problems was found in the wholesale concoction of a brand new terror threat that was branded “The Khorasan Group.”

The Khorosan Group Does Not Exist

It’s a fictitious name the Obama administration invented to deceive us.

As the strikes on Syria began, U.S. officials said Khorasan was “nearing the execution phase” of an attack on the United States or Europe, most likely an attempt to blow up a commercial plane in flight. We are joined by Murtaza Hussain of The Intercept, whose new article with Glenn Greenwald is “The Khorasan Group: Anatomy of a Fake Terror Threat to Justify Bombing Syria.”

Third round of UK airstrikes launched against ISIS in Iraq, confirm MoD

MoD officials say the Royal Air
Force (RAF) tornados were on a mission to assist Kurdish ground
forces engaged in combat with jihadists in the region. As IS
fighters opened fire on Kurdish troops, UK special forces
launched Paveway IV guided bombs at IS positions, the MOD said in
a formal statement.

Iraq Pilots Mistakenly Gave Food, Ammunition to ISIS Militants – NBC News.com

Iraqi military pilots mistakenly gave food, water and ammunition to enemy ISIS militants instead of their own soldiers, a senior security official and a brigadier-general told NBC News. The supplies were supposed to help besieged Iraqi army officers and soldiers who had been fighting Islamist extremists for a week in Saglawyah and the village of Al-Sijar in the country’s western province of Anbar.

The extraordinary rise of the US military industrial complex | Tumblr Blog – Yahoo Finance

We’ve been bombing this part of the world, on and off, for 25 years going back to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and the US military response at the request of the Kuwaitis.

Its no wonder the military industrial companies have performed well since the early 1990’s.

Coats said he never got high at work. But pot’s intoxicating chemical, THC, can stay in the system for weeks.

NSA Update

Israel’s N.S.A. Scandal – NYTimes.com

IN Moscow this summer, while reporting a story for Wired magazine, I had the rare opportunity to hang out for three days with Edward J. Snowden. It gave me a chance to get a deeper understanding of who he is and why, as a National Security Agency contractor, he took the momentous step of leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents.

Among his most shocking discoveries, he told me, was the fact that the N.S.A. was routinely passing along the private communications of Americans to a large and very secretive Israeli military organization known as Unit 8200. This transfer of intercepts, he said, included the contents of the communications as well as metadata such as who was calling whom.

Mr. Snowden stressed that the transfer of intercepts to Israel contained the communications — email as well as phone calls — of countless Arab- and Palestinian-Americans whose relatives in Israel and the Palestinian territories could become targets based on the communications. “I think that’s amazing,” he told me. “It’s one of the biggest abuses we’ve seen.”

Snowden Leaks Didn’t Make Al Qaeda Change Tactics, Says Report – NBC News.com

There is no evidence that Edward Snowden‘s revelations about NSA spying inspired Islamic terror groups to hide their electronic communications behind more sophisticated encryption software, according to a new analysis that challenges other recent research and assertions by U.S. officials about the impact of the leaks.

U.S. House votes to arm Syrian rebels, but questions remain

The House voted 273-to-156 to authorize the plan, a test of support for Obama’s stepped-up campaign to “degrade and destroy” Islamic State fighters who have seized a third of both Iraq and Syria, declared war on the West and seek to establish a caliphate in the heart of the Middle East.

Written as an amendment to a stopgap spending bill, the measure does not include any money to pay for the arms and training.

House, in Unusual Alignments, Moves Toward Vote on ISIS Fight – NYTimes.com

A House divided along unusual and unpredictable lines moved toward a vote Wednesday to authorize the training and arming of Syrian rebels to confront the militant group Islamic State, with President Obama leading efforts to secure a solid majority.

Russia: ‘Free Syrian Army No Longer Exists’; Rebels Are Coordinating With Terrorists

— Russia on Tuesday accused the West of ignoring its warnings about the growing terrorist threat in Syria, and claimed that the moderate rebel front — the one the Obama administration wants to arm as part of its anti-ISIS strategy — “no longer exists.”

Russians urged ‘don’t panic’ as rouble hits new low

The rouble fell about 1% to 38.71 per dollar, the weakest it has been since the currency was restructured in 1998.

Last week, the US and Europe introduced further sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine.

“Don’t panic,” said deputy finance minister Alexei Moiseyev.

Meet The Millionaires And Billionaires Suddenly Buying Tons Of Land In Africa – Business Insider

Oakland Institute just completed the most thorough investigative report on who’s buying land in Africa we’ve seen yet: “Hedge Funds Grabbing Land in Africa,” as BBC called it.

As commodities prices rise and inflation picks up, the OI made the report public, they say, because the number of investors buying up land in Africa concerns them.

Scotland

Specifically, if Scotland becomes independent, it gets to keep 90% of the revenues from its huge oil reserves.

The New York Times reports:

Scottish nationalists have long argued that being governed from London has deprived their country of its fair share of the wealth from Britain’s oil and natural gas fields, which mostly lie in North Sea waters off their shores.

“It’s Scotland’s oil” was the rallying cry in the 1970s that helped raise the profile of the Scottish Nationalist Party, which now leads the country and is pushing for a vote to secede in the referendum on Thursday. Alex Salmond, the politician leading the separatist movement, has pointed to North Sea energy as the treasure that would help finance an independent Scotland — ensuring that the country could continue the generous public spending, including free university tuition, that he is promising voters.

NSA is Crazy

Rogers, who today runs the Navy’s Fleet Cyber Command, oversees a total force of approximately 15,000 sailors and civilians – plus contractors- of which about 5,000 are specifically charged with giving the Navy the same kind of reach and flexibility in cyberspace that it has at sea.

“The network must be treated as a weapons system as we continue the fight to maintain our advantage in cyberspace, and thus across the other four war fighting domains: sea, air, land and space,” he said in a Q&A on the Feb. 2013 issue of Military Information Technology magazine, which dubbed him the “Cyberspace Warrior.”

“He was the best there was, and he was going to lead us into the cyberfuture,” said retired Adm. Gary Roughead, who in 2011 picked Rogers to head Fleet Cyber Command, the Navy’s cyber organization, which was seen as a steppingstone.

A top secret document retrieved by U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden and obtained by CBC News shows that Canada’s electronic spy agency used information from the free internet service at a major Canadian airport to track the wireless devices of thousands of ordinary airline passengers for days after they left the terminal.

After reviewing the document, one of Canada’s foremost authorities on cyber-security says the clandestine operation by the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC) was almost certainly illegal.

Joint Committee on National Security Strategy has a chat with PM David Cameron

“I think the public reaction as I judge it has not been one of
‘shock horror!’ but one of ‘intelligence agencies carry out
intelligence work: good’,” Cameron said. Apparently Mr Cameron
hasn’t seen this
YouGov poll
from June 2013, which showed that 56 percent of
people think that Edward Snowden did the right thing (compared to
27 percent of people who think he did the wrong thing) and 52
percent think he shouldn’t be prosecuted.

Mr Cameron highlighted how crimes in television dramas are solved by tracking
the use of mobile phones. He warned that investigators will lose this
ability as criminals and terrorists resort to using the internet instead.

Earlier this week Mr Cameron told BBC Radio 2 that he likes to relax by
watching Elementary, a modern-day version of Sherlock Homes set in the US,
and Homeland, a thriller about a CIA agent on the trail of a soldier she
believes is an Al-Qaida operative.

Winter Propaganda Games

The U.S. State Department has told Americans coming to Sochi that they should have “no expectation of privacy,” even in their hotel rooms.

A July 2013 article in the Washington Times reveals that there was a significant cybersecurity threat during the 2012 London Olympic Games. “There was a credible [threat of] attack on the electricity infrastructure supporting the Games,” said Oliver Hoare, head of Olympic cybersecurity.

“There are a number of specific threats of varying degrees of credibility that we’re tracking,” he said. “And we’re working very closely with the Russians and with other partners to monitor any threats we see and to disrupt those.”

“The primary threat, from a terrorism perspective, comes from Imarat Kavkaz, probably the most prominent terrorist group in Russia. It’s made its intent clear to seek to carry out attacks in the run-up to the Games,” said Olsen. “We think the greater danger from a terrorist perspective is in potential for attacks to occur outside of the actual venues for the Games themselves in the area surrounding Sochi or outside of Sochi in the region.”

OpenSSL Vulnerability

  • Two developers from the Google Security Team found a flaw in OpenSSL and contributed the fix
  • The flaw affects all versions of OpenSSL before 1.0.1a, 1.0.0i or 0.9.8v
  • Official Announcement
  • Full Disclosure
  • The vulnerability is in the way OpenSSL handles DER encoded data, which can cause a heap overflow and memory corruption

US Unhappy With Australians Storing Data On Australian Shores

  • The US trade representatives specifically took issue with statements by the Australian Department of Defence, which has been making negative comments about various cloud providers based outside of Australia, implying that “hosting data overseas, including in the United States, by definition entails greater risk and unduly exposes consumers to their data being scrutinized by foreign governments.”
  • The issues first arose when the AU government started considering storing data in the cloud
  • The privacy commissioner raised many concerns about the security of the data in foriegn hands, and also the governments inability to legislate against foreign service providers

Cybercrime massively over reported, statistics totally unrealistic

  • Some reports claim that losses due to cybercrime could be as much as $1 Trillion US Dollars
  • Most cybercrime estimates are based on surveys of consumers and companies, and are very unreliable
  • Normal statistical polling for opinion questions, such as seen with political polling works well, however the same method does not work for questions related to a value, because there are no negative values to cancel out the statistical outliers when then get extrapolated resulting in a large upward bias
  • In a 2006 survey of identity theft by the Federal Trade Commission, two respondents gave answers that, when extrapolated to the entire population, would have added $37 billion to the estimate, dwarfing that of all other respondents combined
  • Numbers are also exaggerated by the same pool of gullible and unprotected users being repeatedly targeted, which leads to diminishing returns, however the unreliable statistical models do not take this into consideration

Feedback:

Q: Simon asks about running multiple servers behind a single IP address

A:

  • NAT may be the best answer, especially if you need NAT anyway for the 3 servers to connect out to the internet in the first place
  • You can forward the traffic using something like ‘balance’ or ‘HAProxy’, however the disadvantage to this over NAT is that the internal machines will see the source IP as the LAN IP of the internet facing machine, whereas with NAT they will see the original source IP address
  • For web traffic HTTP (80) and HTTPS (443), you can use nginx, and apache mod_rpaf to pass the original source IP to the internal apache server(s)
  • FreeBSD’s IPFW firewall has the ‘forward’ command, however this does not rewrite the headers of the packet, so the server that receives the forwarded packet needs to know what to do with it

War Story:

Mike sends in his own IBM war story:

After hearing so many war stories from the Other Other Alan, I decided to add one of my own IBM war stories.
I’ve been a contract employee from IBM since 1997. Early in 2000 I and 4 other guys were assigned to a new Network Operations Outsourcing Center. The basic idea was that we four would perform network operations for customers, small/medium businesses external to IBM. Our first customer was a textile company with facilities scattered across the continental US from Georgia to California. IBM sales sold the company a package of software, hardware and services which included IBM Tivoli and Netview monitoring that we were to use to do our monitoring and maintenance of their network.

So, as was always the case back then IBM had specialists who would go out in the field and perform installs and configuration for the customer (in this case us) and then we would be responsible for maintaining it. The initial install took nearly a week with a couple of days of training. Now imagine all the oohs and ahs as all this was running on three HUGE IBM Netfinity 5500 Quad PIII Beasts running Windows NT server and the technicians were explaining all the bells and whistles including event correlation and intelligent discovery. Two days after they left, the database crashed. Well we couldn’t be down with no method of monitoring the customer’s systems. So we took an old copy of “What’s up Gold” and installed it on the only spare hardware we had, a Thinkpad 765. So, as IBM repeatedly sent out technicians to fix one thing or another with the Tivoli environment, or the Oracle database from Hell, we chugged on for an entire year monitoring 40 odd NT servers and an equal amount of network hardware…from a little old pentium 166 laptop, while untold thousands of dollars worth of software and hardware sat almost unused until it was disassembled at the end of the contract.
