Purism makes their laptops more secure — As part of our goal to improve security we are excited to announce that we have successfully integrated Heads into our TPM-enabled coreboot-running Librem laptops.
Kernel secure boot lock down — Among the further restrictions that would be placed on the Linux kernel when running with UEFI Secure Boot enabled is blocking access to kernel module parameters that end up dealing with hardware settings, blocking access to some areas of /dev that could manipulate the kernel or hardware state, etc.
More Linux On Galaxy hype — Linux is installed as an “app” on Android, and when launched it shares the same Linux kernel powering Android.

Purism Now Shipping Their Laptops With Intel ME Disabled — Purism has announced today all laptops to be shipping from their company will now have the Intel Management Engine (ME) disabled.
Purism partner with Nextcloud on end-to-end encrypted storage — Purism plans to include Nextcloud in the Librem 5 phone, as well as within PureOS for its Librem 13 and Librem 15 laptops. Additionally, Purism will be discussing with Nextcloud about a future Purism NAS that runs completely free software including Nextcloud and services.
LVFS/fwupd need donations — At the moment the secure part of the LVFS is hosted in a dedicated Scaleway instance, so any additional donations would be spent on paying this small bill and perhaps more importantly buying some (2nd hand?) hardware to include as part of our release-time QA checks.
Linux Kernel Community Enforcement Statement — It adopts the same termination provisions we are all familiar with from GPL-3.0 as an Additional Permission giving companies confidence that they will have time to come into compliance if a failure is identified. Their ability to rely on this Additional Permission will hopefully re-establish user confidence and help direct enforcement activity back to the original purpose we have all sought over the years — actual compliance.

a new 4.13-based kernel, glibc 2.26, gcc 7.2, and much more.
Ubuntu Desktop has had a major overhaul, with the switch from Unity as
our default desktop to GNOME3 and gnome-shell.
Happy 13th Birthday — Ubuntu 4.10 ‘Warty Warthog’ wasn’t the most glamorous looking release, but it offered open-source enthusiasts of the day a simple, straightforward install from a single CD. The distro was notable for trying to “detect as much hardware as possible, simplifying the X install.”
GNOME 2.8, Firefox 0.9, Evolution 2.0 and OpenOffice.org 1.1.2 were among the software assembled for the formative release.
Ubuntu MATE — After six months of tireless work we present Ubuntu MATE 17.10, by far the best release we’ve ever produced.

For each service unit a restart counter is now kept: it is increased
each time the service is restarted due to Restart=, and may be
queried using “systemctl show -p NRestarts …”.

Dynamic Users with systemd

TL;DR: you may now configure systemd to dynamically allocate a UNIX
user ID for service processes when it starts them and release it when
it stops them. It’s pretty secure, mixes well with transient services,
socket activated services and service templating.

Sending everyone a SIGSTOP before the real signal completely
avoids this. With all processes suspended, all of them will get
your signal before any of them can wake up from other causes. If
they’re going to die from the signal, they’ll die on the spot;
they’re not going to die (because you’re starting with SIGTERM
or SIGHUP and they block or handle it), they’ll only get woken
up at the end, after most of the dust has settled. It’s a great
solution to a subtle issue.

Why did Compiz “””die”””?

I don’t understand. People act like Compiz is archaic, gimmicky, and buggy, but that has not at all been my experience.

It’s at least as stable as gnome-shell, and it’s more configurable than even kwin. A lot of the effects are gaudy, but there are plenty of simple & pleasant animations…and even they’re configurable. The window and desktop management plugins are top-notch, and give me an insanely efficient work environment.

I liked gnome-shell, but I like compiz much, much more. I’m officially jumping ship to XFCE just to get back to compiz, and I don’t understand why more people/distros haven’t.

And most of the tens of thousands binary packages available in the Ubuntu archives!“So maybe something like a Linux emulator?”

Now you’re getting warmer! A team of sharp developers at Microsoft has been hard at work adapting some Microsoft research technology to basically perform real time translation of Linux syscalls into Windows OS syscalls. Linux geeks can think of it sort of the inverse of “wine” — Ubuntu binaries running natively in Windows. Microsoft calls it their “Windows Subsystem for Linux”. (No, it’s not open source at this time.)

So as part of the engineering work, I needed to wrap the stock Ubuntu root filesystem into a Windows application package (.appx) file for suitable upload to the Windows Store. That required me to use Microsoft Visual Studio to clone a sample application, edit a few dozen XML files, create a bunch of icon .png’s of various sizes, and so on.

These are major news for Mono developers and contributors, and I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that this will create for the Mono project, and for other projects that will be able to benefit from this.

The Fan Noise

Enemy #1 the Librem 15 is really loud. Too loud to use when on mic, and too loud to focus when working. It had to be solved.

Things attempted:

Power management under Pure OS
Re-Load the system to Ubuntu 16.04 and check for drivers/firmware
On suggestion from the IRC, installed Windows 10.
Installed Arch, tried messing with an Intel_pstate controller.
Unplugged Fan!

No Ethernet

Media production sucks over Wifi. For me, a high-end laptop needs to have Ethernet, my workflow basically requires it. So I had compensated by buying a USB-C adapter.

Pros

It is well built, compares with any other well built PC laptop very well.
When plugged in, speed feels very responsive.
Easy to hold, feels good in the hand.
LG screen is high-end, has some side address challenges.
USB-C is kinda cool, want to play with that more.
Very easy to nuke and pave. Did not have trouble loading any distro, or even Windows.
It is undeniably unique, and rare. That’s sorta special, and feels a bit like a kit car at the same time.

We were exposed to an intrusion today. It was brief and it shouldn’t impact many people, but if it impacts you, it’s very important you read the information below.

Hackers made a modified Linux Mint ISO, with a backdoor in it, and managed to hack our website to point to it.

Another story of Unix Trojan: Tsunami (IRC/Bot)

This case is actually a same old flaw’s story: looks like the system was exploited via web admin panel abuse by HTTP access (sorry, can not tell you which web panel right now) using the tools that can send rapid packet fetch/wget requests (later on we know that the malware discussed here also have that function), the root privilege was gained via crontab UID (root, indeed), and practically overall server’s security was compromised from that hole. And the bad guys was compiling nasty downloader/IRC Bot backdoor (known previously named as TSUNAMI) with deleting all source traces+logs related, thus run & hide its service using the fake bash process (ever see a BSD system with bash shell process before? *smile*).

All forums users should change their passwords.

It was confirmed that the forums database was compromised during the attack led against us yesterday and that the attackers acquired a copy of it. If you have an account on forums.linuxmint.com, please change your password on all sensitive websites as soon as possible.

The database contains the following sensitive information:

Your forums username
An encrypted copy of your forums password
Your email address
Any personal information you might have put in your signature/profile/etc…
Any personal information you might written on the forums (including private topics and private messages)

ZFS filesystem will be built into Ubuntu 16.04 LTS by default

A new long-term support (LTS) version of Ubuntu is coming out in April, and Canonical just announced a major addition that will please anyone interested in file storage. Ubuntu 16.04 will include the ZFS filesystem module by default, and the OpenZFS-based implementation will get official support from Canonical.

Canonical Presents Sony Xperia Z1 and OnePlus One as Ubuntu Phones

“Today, we’re celebrating the arrival of two new Ubuntu phone community ports! We owe a big thank to the Ubuntu community for porting Ubuntu to these devices and especially Marius Gripsgard for his work on the OnePlus One! More widely, this is a meeting of the minds with phone vendors who have been pushing open source in their devices and their developer community for a while. The Sony open source efforts in particular have been essential to this work. Similarly OnePlus’ commitment to open source has helped tremendously towards this port becoming available.

Red Star Linux Adds Secret Watermarks To Files

ERNW security analyst Florian Grunow says that North Korea’s Red Star Linux operating system is tracking users by tagging content with unique hidden tags. He particularizes that files including Word documents and JPEG images connected to but not necessarily executed in Red Star will have a tag introduced into its code that includes a number based on hardware serial numbers. Red Star’s development team seems to have created some quite interesting custom additions to Linux kernel and userspace, based on which Grunow has written a technical analysis.
