​The Linux vs Meltdown and Spectre battle continues

So, where are we with fixing the problems? Work is continuing, but the latest update of the stable Linux kernel, 4.14.2, has the current patches. Some people may experience boot problems with this release, but 4.14.13 will be out in a few days.
Patches have also been added to the 4.4 and 4.9 stable kernel trees. But, as Kroah-Hartman added, “This backport is very different from the mainline version that is in 4.14 and 4.15, there are different bugs happening.” Still, he said, “Those are the minority at the moment, and should not stop you from upgrading.”

Here are the main fixes and enhancements in this new version:

• Added Audio Spectrum Visualization filter.
• Added support for font size and italics to the Text filter.

The Return of Linspire?

• Linspire Returns

The Linspire distribution has had a long and mixed history. Linspire (originally named Lindows) is a commercial distribution which has changed hands a few times. Linspire started as a Debian-based project designed to offer a familiar desktop environment for Windows users. Linspire was later re-based on Ubuntu and continued its beginner-friendly mission. However, the Linspire distribution was eventually purchased by Xandros and discontinued back around 2008. At the end of 2017, PC/OpenSystems LLC announced they had purchased Linspire and its community edition, Freespire, and would resume development of these two Ubuntu-based distributions. Linspire is being sold as a commercial product which can be bundled with PC/OpenSystems computers while Freespire can be downloaded free of charge. Freespire 3.0 and Linspire 7.0 released

Linspire is a commercial release which builds on the elegant Freespire foundation. It does include a proprietary software set optimized for business users, students, researchers and developers. It is a capable solution for utilizing cloud-based web apps as well as legacy software from our Debian or Ubuntu’s repositories.

• This Freespire 3.0 is supported until 2021. Linspire 7.0 is supported until 2025.

The issue with modern Linux distributions like Debian/Ubuntu/Arch is that they distribute compiled binary packages. Typically this is good enough as compiling every single package you want from scratch is time consuming and most people ain’t got the time for that.
Although the 486 is theoretically supported by the modern Linux kernel, this is not true on the distribution and package level. For example, Debian has dropped support for older 586 32-bit CPUs as of 2016. Thus, the oldest supported x86 CPU by Debian is the 686. The 6th-generation x86 started with the Pentium Pro released in 1995 or its more commonly known variant Pentium 2 was released in 1997.
Therefore, it is no longer possible to directly use a typical modern distribution on a 486 PC. But on an atypical distribution like Gentoo which requires you to compile every package, this might still be possible.

Federated Sharing – What’s new in ownCloud 9.0

With ownCloud 9.0 we made it even easier to exchange the Federated Cloud IDs. Below you can see the administrator setting for the new Federation App, which will be enabled by default.

The option “Add server automatically once a federated share was created successfully” is enabled by default. This means, that as soon as a user creates a federated share with another ownCloud, either as a recipient or as a sender, ownCloud will add the remote server to the list of trusted ownClouds. Additionally you can predefined a list of trusted ownClouds. While technically it is possible to use plain http I want to point out that I really recommend to use https for all federated share operations to secure your users and their data.

What does it mean that two ownClouds trust each other? ownCloud 9.0 automatically creates a internal address book which contains all users accounts. If two ownClouds trust each other they will start to synchronize their system address books. In order to synchronize the system address books and to keep them up-to-date we use the well known and widespread CardDAV protocol. After the synchronization was successful ownCloud will know all users from the trusted remote servers, including their Federated Cloud ID and their display name. The share dialog will use this information for auto-completion. This allows you to share files across friendly ownClouds without knowing more than the users name. ownCloud will automatically find the corresponding Federated Cloud ID and will suggest the user as a recipient of your share.

• VW Diesel Crisis Illustrates Downside of Proprietary Vehicle Software

The Volkswagen diesel crisis is an ongoing reminder of the dilemma that proprietary auto software and hardware is presenting for automakers and consumers. In September, VW disclosed that alleged “defeat devices” were installed in 2009-15 VW and Audi diesel cars. How was VW able to get away with this for so long? Because the automaker’s onboard software is protected against outside inspection.

• Defendants should be able to inspect software code used in forensics.

But as shocking as Volkswagen’s fraud may be, it only heralds more of its kind. It’s time to address one of the most urgent if overlooked tech transparency issues—secret code in the criminal justice system. Today, closed, proprietary software can put you in prison or even on death row. And in most U.S. jurisdictions you still wouldn’t have the right to inspect it. In short, prosecutors have a Volkswagen problem.

Mr. Moglen, a lawyer, technologist and historian who founded the Software Freedom Law Center, has argued for decades that software ought to be transparent. That would best serve the public interest, he said in his 2010 speech.

“Software is in everything,” he said, citing airplanes, medical devices and cars, much of it proprietary and thus invisible. “We shouldn’t use it for purposes that could conceivably cause harm, like running personal computers, let alone should we use it for things like anti-lock brakes or throttle control in automobiles.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Moglen recalled the elevator in his hotel.

“Intelligent public policy, as we all have learned since the early 20th century, is to require elevators to be inspectable, and to require manufacturers of elevators to build them so they can be inspected,” he said. “If Volkswagen knew that every customer who buys a vehicle would have a right to read the source code of all the software in the vehicle, they would never even consider the cheat, because the certainty of getting caught would terrify them.”

But on Tuesday, the Library of Congress issued exemptions to DMCA that pleased many auto enthusiasts. In a ruling that also freed those who wish to modify tablets and smart TVs, the LOC said, more or less, monkey away.
