APFS Going Live, the end of HFS+ is Near

iOS 10.3 introduces a new Apple File System (APFS), which is installed when an iOS device is updated. APFS is optimized for flash/SSD storage and includes improved support for encryption. Other features include snapshots for freezing the state of a file system (better for backups), space sharing, and better space efficiency, all of which should result in a more stable platform. Customers updating to iOS 10.3 should first make a backup given that the update installs a new file system.

Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2017

We learn something new every time we run our survey. This year is no exception:

  • A common misconception about developers is that they’ve all been programming since childhood. In fact, we see a wide range of experience levels. Among professional developers, 11.3% got their first coding jobs within a year of first learning how to program. A further 36.9% learned to program between one and four years before beginning their careers as developers.
  • Only 13.1% of developers are actively looking for a job. But 75.2% of developers are interested in hearing about new job opportunities.
  • When we asked respondents what they valued most when considering a new job, 53.3% said remote options were a top priority. A majority of developers, 63.9%, reported working remotely at least one day a month, and 11.1% say they’re full-time remote or almost all the time.
  • A majority of developers said they were underpaid. Developers who work in government and non-profits feel the most underpaid, while those who work in finance feel the most overpaid.

Why don’t designers take Android seriously?

Hack Programming Language

PHP has always been poorly designed and poorly stewarded, but it\’s appealing to developers because it\’s easy to learn (and tons of programmers already know it, so it\’s easy to hire for), it\’s everywhere and runs on anything, it\’s very fast, and it\’s very simple to host and maintain server-side. In short, it\’s extremely practical.

Since Facebook is migrating its own code to Hack, pure PHP will become a less-tested second-class citizen on HHVM. This could devalue HHVM to the outside world, throwing away the benefits it’s bringing to PHP programmers everywhere. The closeness of the two languages will probably prevent this from becoming a significant problem, but it’s a problem nonetheless.

Amazon is making a box for your living room, and this is what its game controller looks like

It\’s suggested that the unnamed box will run a fork of the Android OS, just like Amazon\’s Kindle Fire line of tablets. Those tablets act very much as a storefront for Amazon, offering a wide selection of games, movies, and books. It\’s likely that Amazon will attempt to leverage its large content offerings with the launch of a set-top box.

Rails Is A Ghetto

I\’ve more or less kept my mouth shut about some of the dumb and plain evil
stuff that goes on in the Rails community. As things would happen though
I\’d take notes, collect logs, and started writing this little essay.
As soon as I was stable and didn\’t need Ruby on Rails to survive I told
myself I\’d revamp my blog and expose these fucks.

Zed Shaw has perfected the world\’s best system for learning Python. Follow it and you will succeed-just like the hundreds of thousands of beginners Zed has taught to date! You bring the discipline, commitment, and persistence; the author supplies everything else.
