Data from connected CloudPets teddy bears leaked and ransomed, exposing kids’ voice messages

• Extortionists Wipe Thousands of Databases, Victims Who Pay Up Get Stiffed

• Spiral Toys xCEO denies voice recordings stolen

• CloudPets left their database exposed publicly to the web without so much as a password to protect it.

• There are references to almost 2.2 million voice recordings of parents and their children exposed by databases that should never have contained production data.

• CloudPets has absolutely no password strength rules

• The CloudPets Twitter account has also been dormant since July last year so combined with the complete lack of response to all communications, it looks like operations have well and truly been shuttered.

Spammers expose their entire operation through bad backups

• Today we release details on the inner workings of a massive, illegal spam operation. The situation presents a tangible threat to online privacy and security as it involves a database of 1.4 billion email accounts combined with real names, user IP addresses, and often physical address. Chances are that you, or at least someone you know, is affected. Spammergate: The Fall of an Empire

• The data from this well-known, but slippery spamming operation, was discovered by Chris Vickery, a security researcher for MacKeeper and shared with Salted Hash, Spamhaus, as well as relevant law enforcement agencies.

• Vickery also discovered thousands of warm-up email accounts used by RCM to skirt anti-spam measures

• RCM’s data breach also exposed 2,199 IP addresses used for public-faced activities; as well as the group’s internal assets. This is in addition to the 60 IP blocks RCM has identified for activities in the past, as well as current and future operations; and the 140 active DNS servers that are rotated frequently.

• Based on campaign logging documents, the data breach also exposed more than 300 active MX records. In just two spreadsheets alone, RCM recorded nearly 100,000 domains used for their campaigns.

• If an offer doesn’t inbox (meaning it is rejected, or otherwise dumped into a spam or junk folder), or a given domain is blacklisted, RCM goes back to a list of thousands of domains and selects another to restart the process.

Low-overhead rendering with Vulkan

In order to address some of the sources of CPU overhead and provide developers with more explicit control over rendering, we’ve been working to bring a new 3D rendering API, Vulkan(tm), to Android. Like OpenGL(tm) ES, Vulkan is an open standard for 3D graphics and rendering maintained by Khronos. Vulkan is being designed from the ground up to minimize CPU overhead in the driver, and allow your application to control GPU operation more directly. Vulkan also enables better parallelization by allowing multiple threads to perform work such as command buffer construction at once.

Linux on a USB Stick for Students

Lernstick is a mobile and secure learning and working environment for school and home that is usually installed on removable media (USB sticks, USB hard disks, SD cards, etc.) so that (almost*) any computer can be booted from these storage media. A hard drive with an installed operation system is no longer necessary. (But optionally, the system can also be installed on internal hard drives.)

It’s Been Three Years Since The Big Steam Linux Reveal

ISIS Update

Syria Becomes the 7th Predominantly Muslim Country Bombed by 2009 Nobel Peace Laureate – The Intercept

The U.S. today began bombing targets inside Syria, in concert with its lovely and inspiring group of five allied regimes: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan.

That means that Syria becomes the 7th predominantly Muslim country bombed by 2009 Nobel Peace Laureate Barack Obama—after Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya and Iraq.

Six weeks of bombing hasn’t budged ISIS in Iraq, but it has caused ISIS recruitment to soar. That’s all predictable: the U.S. has known for years that what fuels and strengthens anti-American sentiment (and thus anti-American extremism) is exactly what they keep doing: aggression in that region. If you know that, then they know that. At this point, it’s more rational to say they do all of this not despite triggering those outcomes, but because of it. Continuously creating and strengthening enemies is a feature, not a bug. It is what justifies the ongoing greasing of the profitable and power-vesting machine of Endless War.

If there is anyone who actually believes that the point of all of this is a moral crusade to vanquish the evil-doers of ISIS (as the U.S. fights alongside its close Saudi friends), please read Professor As’ad AbuKhalil’s explanation today of how Syria is a multi-tiered proxy war.

• Blowback! U.S. trained Islamists who joined ISIS

Syrian rebels who would later join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIS, were trained in 2012 by U.S. instructors working at a secret base in Jordan, according to informed Jordanian officials.

The officials said dozens of future ISIS members were trained at the time as part of covert aid to the insurgents targeting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The officials said the training was not meant to be used for any future campaign in Iraq.

The Jordanian officials said all ISIS members who received U.S. training to fight in Syria were first vetted for any links to extremist groups like al-Qaida.

In February 2012, WND was first to report the U.S., Turkey and Jordan were running a training base for the Syrian rebels in the Jordanian town of Safawi in the country’s northern desert region.

That report has since been corroborated by numerous other media accounts.

Last March, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported Americans were training Syrian rebels in Jordan.

U.S., coalition forces hit IS oil refineries in Syria

U.S. aircraft and those from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates struck Islamic State targets in Syria Wednesday, including 12 “modular oil refineries,” the U.S. Central Command said.

The 13 airstrikes used a combination of fighter aircraft and drones, according to Central Command. The targets were in the remote eastern part of Syria near the towns of Al Mayadin, Al Hasakah, and Abu Kamal. Another strike hit an IS vehicle near Dayr az Zawr, also in eastern Syria.

The CIA is expanding a clandestine effort to train opposition fighters in Syria amid concern that moderate, U.S.-backed militias are rapidly losing ground in the country’s civil war, U.S. officials said.

Among those named Wednesday were two alleged ISIS officials: Tarkhan Tayumurazovich Batirashvili, also known as Omar al-Shishani, described by the U.S. as a Syrian-based Georgia national who has held numerous top military positions within ISIS and has led a number of attacks, and Tariq Bin-Al-Tahar Bin al Falih al-‘Awni Al-Harzi, who allegedly has worked to raise funds and recruit fighters for the Islamic terror group.

Six others were identified as acting for or on behalf of al Qaeda, its Syrian affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra, or other affiliated groups. They are: ‘Abd al-Aziz Aday Zimin al-Fadhil, a Kuwaiti; Ashraf Muhammad Yusuf ‘Uthman ‘Abd al-Salam; ‘Abd al-Malik Muhammad Yusuf ‘Uthman ‘Abd al-Salam, a Jordanian; Fatih Hasar, a resident of Turkey; Hamad Awad Dahi Sarhan al-Shammari; and Ibrahim ‘Isa Hajji Muhammad al-Bakr, who is believed to be living in tribal areas in Pakistan.

• The FreeBSD foundation published their semi-annual newsletter, complete with a letter from the president of the foundation
• “In fact after reading [the president’s] letter, I was motivated to come up with my own elevator pitch instead of the usual FreeBSD is like Linux, only better!”
• It talks about the FreeBSD journal as being one of the most exciting things they’ve launched this year, conferences they funded and various bits of sponsored code that went into -CURRENT

• The original commit message was just “decompress libressl” with no details – these are the missing details of that change
• It talks about the different network layers where compression is applied and how code has to be refactored for that
• “I might download a zip file (of png files!). The web server, if configured just wrong, can apply http compression to it. If it’s https, the TLS layer can compress it again. If I’m using an SSH tunnel, that can compress it. If it’s travelling over IPsec, it can get compressed again. It can get compressed again by IP compression. How many layers of compression do we really need?”

OpenSSL, more like OpenSS-Hell

• We mentioned this huge OpenSSL bug last week during all the chaos, but the aftermath is just as messy
• There\’s been a pretty vicious response from security experts all across the internet and in all of the BSD projects – and rightfully so
• We finally have a timeline of events
• Reactions from ISC, PCBSD, Tarsnap, the Tor project, FreeBSD, NetBSD, oss-sec, PHK, Varnish and Akamai
• pfSense released a new version to fix it
• OpenBSD disabled heartbeat entirely and is very unforgiving of the IETF
• Ted Unangst has two good write-ups about the issue and how horrible the OpenSSL codebase is
• A nice quote from one of the OpenBSD lists: \”Given how trivial one-liner fixes such as #2569 have remained unfixed for 2.5+ years, one can only assume that OpenSSL\’s bug tracker is only used to park bugs, not fix them\”
• Sounds like someone else was having fun with the bug for a while too
• There\’s also another OpenSSL bug that\’s possibly worse that OpenBSD patched – it allows an attacker to inject data from one connection into another
• OpenBSD has also imported the most current version of OpenSSL and are ripping it apart from the inside out – we\’re seeing a fork in real time (over 55000 lines of code removed as of yesterday evening)

• Back in episode 23 we talked with Ted Unangst about the new \”signify\” tool in OpenBSD
• Now there\’s a (completely unofficial) portable version of it on github
• If you want to verify your OpenBSD sets ahead of time on another OS, this tool should let you do it
• Maybe other BSD projects can adopt it as a replacement for gpg and incorporate it into their base systems

• The OpenBSD foundation has reached their 2014 goal of $150,000
• You can check their activities and goals to see where the money is going
• Remember that funding also goes to OpenSSH, which EVERY system uses and relies on everyday to protect their data
• The FreeBSD foundation has kicked off their spring fundraising campaign
• There\’s also a list of their activities and goals available to read through

Using OpenSSH Certificate Authentication

• SSH has a not-so-often-talked-about authentication option in addition to passwords and keys: certificates – you can add certificates to any current authentication method you\’re using
• They\’re not really that complex, there just isn\’t a lot of documentation on how to use them – this post tries to solve that
• There\’s the benefit of not needing a known_hosts file or authorized_users file anymore
• The post goes into a fair amount of detail about the differences, advantages and implications of using certificates for authentication

Back to FreeBSD, a new series

• Similar to the \”FreeBSD Challenge\” blog series, one of our listeners will be writing about his switching BACK to FreeBSD journey

Big changes for OpenBSD 5.6

• Although 5.5 was just frozen and the release process has started, 5.6 is already looking promising

• Sendmail is also no longer the default MTA, OpenSMTPD is the new default
