• Ubuntu Rally in NYC — The Ubuntu Rally, taking place in New York City September 25th-29th, is a forward-thinking five day software hackathon attended by major software vendors, Ubuntu developers working at every level of the stack, and community contributors.
• 17.10 Beta 1 of Ubuntu flavours released — The first beta is available today for the Ubuntu 17.10 “Artful Aardvark” release for the flavors opting in to participate in this development milestone ahead of the official launch in October.
• Reddit closes its source — Open-source makes it hard for us to develop some features “in the clear” (like our recent video launch) without leaking our plans too far in advance. As Reddit is now a larger player on the web, it is hard for us to be strategic in our planning when everyone can see what code we are committing.
• Phoenix OS urged to open source their kernel — So a dedicated fan of the platform, Karol Putra, has created a Change.org petition in hopes that it will change their minds.
• Petition update * Victory! — It’s most likely really the Phoenix OS kernel as it carries slight unique modifications in comparison to Android-x86 and it’s forks
• Google mandates 4.4+ kernel for Oreo — Starting this year with smartphones which ship with Android Oreo, Google is requiring that all SoCs productized in 2017 must launch with kernel 4.4 or newer.
• Essential underdelivers — Essential — a device, marketing team, and CEO that seem to blur the lines between fact and fiction and possible and impossible
• Then Essential royally screws up — Dozens of customers replied with their personal information, but those emails didn’t just go to Essential. Instead, they went out to everybody who had received the original email.
• Blockchain is big in big business — Hundreds of projects have collectively raised more than a billion dollars through “initial coin offerings” (ICOs). There are now tokens funding every conceivable endeavor
• Linux creeps above 3% browser marketshare — According to Net Applications’ Netmarketshare, the Linux market share on the desktop as judged by browser interactions may now be above 3%.

OpenBSD, from distribution to project

• Ted Unangst has yet another interesting blog post up, this time covering a bit of BSD history and some different phases OpenBSD has been through
• It’s the third part of his ongoing series of posts about OpenBSD removing large bits of code in favor of smaller replacements
• In the earliest days, OpenBSD collected and maintained code from lots of other projects (Apache, lynx, perl..)
• After importing new updates every release cycle, they eventually hit a transitional phase – things were updated, but nothing new was imported
• When the need arose, instead of importing a known tool to do the job, homemade replacements (OpenNTPD, OpenBGPD, etc) were slowly developed
• In more recent times, a lot of the imported code has been completely removed in favor of the homegrown daemons

Remote ZFS mirrors, the hard way

• Backups to “the cloud” have become a hot topic in recent years, but most of them require trade-offs between convenience and security
• You have to trust (some of) the providers not to snoop on your data, but even the ones who allow you to locally encrypt files aren’t without some compromise
• As the author puts it: “We don’t need live synchronisation, cloud scaling, SLAs, NSAs, terms of service, lock-ins, buy-outs, up-sells, shut-downs, DoSs, fail whales, pay-us-or-we’ll-deletes, or any of the noise that comes with using someone else’s infrastructure.”
• This guide walks you through setting up a FreeBSD server with ZFS to do secure offsite backups yourself
• The end result is an automatic system for incremental backups that’s backed (pun intended) by ZFS
• If you’re serious about keeping your important data safe and sound, you’ll want to give this one a read – lots of detailed instructions

Various DragonFlyBSD updates

• The DragonFly guys have been quite busy this week, making an assortment of improvements throughout the tree
• Intel ValleyView graphics support was finally committed to the main repository
• While on the topic of graphics, they’ve also issued a call for testing for a DRM update (matching Linux 3.16’s and including some more Broadwell fixes)
• Their base GCC compiler is also now upgraded to version 5.2
• If your hardware supports it, DragonFly will now use an accelerated console by default

QuakeCon runs on OpenBSD

• QuakeCon, everyone’s favorite event full of rocket launchers, recently gave a mini-tour of their network setup
• For such a crazy network, unsurprisingly, they seem to be big fans of OpenBSD and PF
• In this video interview, one of the sysadmins discusses why he chose OpenBSD, what he likes about it, different packet queueing systems, how their firewalls and servers are laid out and much more
• He also talks about why they went with vanilla PF, writing their ruleset from the ground up rather than relying on a prebuilt solution
• There’s also some general networking talk about nginx, reverse proxies, caching, fiber links and all that good stuff
• Follow-up questions can be asked in this reddit thread
• The host doesn’t seem to be that familiar with the topics at hand, mentioning “OpenPF” multiple times among other things, so our listeners should get a kick out of it

Rethinking ways to improve FreeBSD

CII contributes to OpenBSD

• If you recall back to when we talked to the OpenBSD foundation, one of the things Ken mentioned was the Core Infrastructure Initiative
• In a nutshell, it’s an organization of security experts that helps facilitate (with money, in most cases) the advancement of the more critical open source components of the internet
• The group is organized by the Linux foundation, and gets its multi-million dollar backing from various big companies in the technology space (and donations from volunteers)
• To ensure that OpenBSD and its related projects (OpenSSH, LibreSSL and PF likely being the main ones here) remain healthy, they’ve just made a large donation to the foundation – this makes them the first “platinum” level donor as well
• While the exact amount wasn’t disclosed, it was somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000
• The donation comes less than a month after Microsoft’s big donation, so it’s good to see these large organizations helping out important open source projects that we depend on every day

Another BSDCan report

• The FreeBSD foundation is still getting trip reports from BSDCan, and this one comes from Mark Linimon
• In his report, he mainly covers the devsummit and some discussion with the portmgr team
• One notable change for the upcoming 10.2 release is that the default binary repository is now the quarterly branch – Mark talks a bit about this as well
• He also gives his thoughts on using QEMU for cross-compiling packages and network performance testing

Lumina 0.8.6 released

• The PC-BSD team has released another version of Lumina, their BSD-licensed desktop environment
• This is mainly a bugfix and performance improvement release, rather than one with lots of new features
• The on-screen display widget should be much faster now, and the configuration now allows for easier selection of default applications (which browser, which terminal, etc)
• Lots of non-English translation updates and assorted fixes are included as well
• If you haven’t given it a try yet, or maybe you’re looking for a new window manager, Lumina runs on all the BSDs

More c2k15 hackathon reports

• Even more reports from OpenBSD’s latest hackathon are starting to pour in
• The first one is from Alexandr Nedvedicky, one of their brand new developers (the guy from Oracle)
• He talks about his experience going to a hackathon for the first time, and lays out some of the plans for integrating their (very large) SMP PF patch into OpenBSD
• Second up is Andrew Fresh, who went without any specific plans, but still ended up getting some UTF8 work done
• On the topic of ARMv7, “I did enjoy being there when things weren’t working so [Brandon Mercer] could futilely try to explain the problem to me (I wasn’t much help with kernel memory layouts). Fortunately others overheard and provided words of encouragement and some help which was one of my favorite parts of attending this hackathon.”
• Florian Obser sent in a report that includes a little bit of everything: setting up the hackathon’s network, relayd and httpd work, bidirectional forwarding detection, airplane stories and even lots of food
• Paul Irofti wrote in as well about his activities, which were mainly focused on the Octeon CPU architecture
• He wrote a new driver for the onboard flash of a DSR-500 machine, which was built following the Common Flash Interface specification
• This means that, going forward, OpenBSD will have out-of-the-box support for any flash memory device (often the case for MIPS and ARM-based embedded devices)

Oculus Rift virtual reality headset will ship in early 2016 | Technology | The Guardian

The first commercial model of Facebook’s much anticipated Oculus Rift virtual reality headset will go on sale in the first quarter of 2016, the company confirmed today.

The announcement ends months of speculation that the release, which had been anticipated to happen by the end of 2015, would slip beyond Christmas. The most high profile device in the virtual reality market, Oculus Rift has been developed primarily for gaming but the technology is also being explored for occupational therapy, education and by film makers.

Recently it has begun to venture into original content with a podcast and newsletter. Today it is going even further with the launch of its own video division. “Reddit’s mission is to connect people across the world through authentic conversations, collaboration, and community — video is an amazing storytelling medium and there’s no better wellspring of original stories than Reddit,” said co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

Top-secret documents from the archive of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden show the National Security Agency can now automatically recognize the content within phone calls by creating rough transcripts and phonetic representations that can be easily searched and stored.

The documents show NSA analysts celebrating the development of what they called “Google for Voice” nearly a decade ago.

Apple Reports Record March Quarter Results of $13.6B Profit on $58B Revenue, Boosts Dividend and Buybacks

Apple today announced financial results for the second fiscal quarter and first calendar quarter of 2015. For the quarter, Apple posted revenue of $58 billion and net quarterly profit of $13.6 billion

Aside from revenue and profit, Apple disclosed sales numbers or revenue for the these categories:

• iPhone: 61.1 million units
• iPad: 12.6 million units
• Mac: 4.5 million units
  

Totals:

• Revenue: $58 billion
• EPS: $2.33 per share

Pour one out: The Nexus 7 is finally dead | TechRadar

Want to buy yourself a Nexus 7? It’s not going to happen. Google has apparently given up on selling the 7-inch device directly to consumers, choosing instead to focus on the Nexus 9.

But the bad news is that the larger, newer tablet isn’t hitting the heights the Nexus slate managed during 2013 and 2014, with Google’s earnings call confirming that the tablet isn’t performing as well as its predecessor.

In fact, both the Nexus 9 and smartphone Nexus 6 aren’t selling in the same numbers that Google has hoped they would, with the search giant confirming that the loss of Nexus sales had led to a drop in revenue quarter over quarter.

Uber is bringing its food delivery service to New York City and Chicago | The Verge

An Uber representative told The Verge that UberEats has its own dedicated drivers. Lunch options will range from $9 to $12, while dinner options will range from $10 to $15. The Uber rep said meals come with a $3 delivery fee ($4 in New York City), regardless of the number of meals you order.

You thought the day would never come, but after 6 months and almost 600 fixes we’re bringing you the next step on our way to a final release of elementary OS 0.3!

elementary — Payments

We explicitly say you can download Luna for free, we include a pay-what-you-want (including $0) text entry with $10 pre-filled, and we also include an explicit “Download Luna for free” link that simply sets the text entry to $0 for you.

Next, you’re given the payment/download dialog:

The text entry matches whatever was on the first screen, but we again let you change it to anything you’d like, including $0.

Users have downloaded Luna over 2,000,000 times. Around 99.875% of those users download without paying. Of the tiny 0.125% who do, the most common payments are the default $10, followed by $1. But again, only a tiny fraction of one percent of users even decide to pay in the first place.

Furthermore, we’ve received feedback that this flow is deceiving. It doesn’t make it clear enough that there are multiple payment options and it includes a payments step even if you’ve chosen to enter $0.

A recent post on the elementary blog about how they ask for payment on download created a bit of a stir this week. One particular sentence struck a nerve (it has since been removed from the post): “We want users to understand that they’re pretty much cheating the system when they choose not to pay for software.”

AutoKey

AutoKey is a desktop automation utility for Linux and X11. It allows you to manage collection of scripts and phrases, and assign abbreviations and hotkeys to these. This allows you to execute a script or insert text on demand in whatever program you are using.

AutoKey features a subset of the capabilities of the popular Windows-based AutoHotkey, but is not intended as a full replacement. For a Linux-based implementation of AutoHotkey, see IronAHK. AutoKey’s GUI features a number of concepts and features inspired by the Windows program PhraseExpress.

• Python scripting engine allows you to automate virtually any task that can be accomplished via the keyboard and/or mouse
• Built-in code editor with autocomplete and calltips
• Scripts are plain Python files that can be edited in any text editor
• Similarly, phrases are stored as plain text files
• Create collections of phrases/scripts in folders, and assign a hotkey or abbreviation to the folder to display a popup menu
• Regular expressions can be used to filter windows by their title or class, to exclude hotkeys/abbreviations from triggering in certain applications

Sometime in late October, my wife and I decided that it would be fun to put our house on the market, and “test the waters”. We have been talking about moving out of Arlington, TX (a relatively big city) for years, and heading towards a bit more land, and less city. As fate would have it, we had an offer on our house within 1 week, and all of a sudden needed to find a new house, make repairs, pack, rent a moving truck, etc… etc… Needless to say, this required a lot of time and energy.

It’s about time I got on this reddit bandwagon. Using Firefox on my desktop seems to work o.k., but I decided I needed a good/nice Android app on my phone for it that is not so intrusive.

Since I know you all visit the site as your preferred down of contact and voicing of show desires I was wondering what preferences you all and the audience like to use.

After watching LAS and hearing that Boarderlands 2 is coming to Linux (sine it is 1 of the main games I play and I can just duel boot into Windows for the other games), I have decided to switch my main PC to Ubuntu Gnome. The only thing that is holding me back is Photoshop and Illustrator. I tried GIMP and it just did not work for me and all my clients are on the Adobe train so it is something I need.

I was wondering…

Since most of the apps running on Windows are available on Mac now a days, is there a program on Linux that is like WINE but for Mac applications? And would it be a better solution than WINE since Mac is based on Unix?

Reddit Raising Big Funding Round With Help From Y Combinator Contacts

Reddit, the social news site with a big Web footprint, is raising a big funding round — with help from some of the people who helped launch the site nine years ago, including co-founder Alexis Ohanian and other people associated closely with startup incubator Y Combinator.

Sources said the site has reached a preliminary agreement to sell less than 10 percent of the company for more than $50 million. That could give the company a valuation of upwards of $500 million.

Home Depot Hit By Same Malware as Target — Krebs on Security

The apparent credit and debit card breach uncovered last week at Home Depot **was aided in part by a new variant of the same malicious software program that stole card account data from cash registers at **Target last December, according to sources close to the investigation.

A source close to the investigation told this author that an analysis revealed at least some of Home Depot’s store registers had been infected with a new variant of “BlackPOS” (a.k.a. “Kaptoxa”), a malware strain designed to siphon data from cards when they are swiped at infected point-of-sale systems running Microsoft Windows.

BlackPOS also was found on point-of-sale systems at Target last year. What’s more, cards apparently stolen from Home Depot shoppers first turned up for sale on Rescator[dot]cc, the same underground cybercrime shop that sold millions of cards stolen in the Target attack.

Other clues in the new BlackPOS malware variant further suggest a link between the cybercrooks behind the apparent breach at Home Depot and the hackers who hit Target. The new BlackPOS variant includes several interesting text strings. Among those are five links to Web sites featuring content about America’s role in foreign conflicts, particularly in Libya and Ukraine.

Three of the links point to news, editorial articles and cartoons that accuse the United States of fomenting war and unrest in the name of Democracy in Ukraine, Syria, Egypt and Libya. One of the images shows four Molotov cocktails with the flags of those four nations on the bottles, next to a box of matches festooned with the American flag and match ready to strike. Another link leads to an image of the current armed conflict in Ukraine between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists.

“The IP address leak we discovered came from the Silk Road user login interface. Upon examining the individual packets of data being sent back from the website, we noticed that the headers of some of the packets reflected a certain IP address not associated with any known Tor node as the source of the packets. This IP address (the “Subject IP Address”) was the only non-Tor source IP address reflected in the traffic we examined.”

“The Subject IP Address caught our attention because, if a hidden service is properly configured to work on Tor, the source IP address of traffic sent from the hidden service should appear as the IP address of a Tor node, as opposed to the true IP address of the hidden service, which Tor is designed to conceal. When I typed the Subject IP Address into an ordinary (non-Tor) web browser, a part of the Silk Road login screen (the CAPTCHA prompt) appeared. Based on my training and experience, this indicated that the Subject IP Address was the IP address of the SR Server, and that it was ‘leaking’ from the SR Server because the computer code underlying the login interface was not properly configured at the time to work on Tor.”

Doubts cast over FBI ‘leaky CAPTCHA’ Silk Road rapture • The Register

“The idea that the CAPTCHA was being served from a live IP is unreasonable. Were this the case, it would have been noticed not only by me — but the many other people who were also scrutinizing the Silk Road website. Silk Road was one of the most scrutinized sites on the web, for white hats because it was an interesting challenge and for black hats since it hosted so many Bitcoin (with little legal implication if you managed to steal them).”

Moreover, an externally hosted image would still be routed over Tor and any packet sniffer would be unable to detect the Silk Road’s IP address.

Cubrilovic claimed it was more likely the FBI found and exploited a security vulnerability or discovered an information leak in the Silk Road login page and application.

CenturyLink Said to Seek to Acquire Rackspace Hosting – Bloomberg

CenturyLink has discussed the idea with San Antonio-based Rackspace, which last month said it is still conducting an internal review of its strategic options, according to the people, who asked not to be identified talking about private information. One person said a deal may not be reached for the company, which had a stock-market valuation of $5.33 billion at the end of last week.

Odds of the deal going through are less than 50 percent unless Rackspace is willing to take payment in stock or enter a joint venture, Jaegers said. CenturyLink wants to avoid a debt downgrade that may come with financing a large deal, she said.

What is WORM (write once, read many)?

In computer storage media, WORM (write once, read many) is a data storage technology that allows information to be written to a disc a single time and prevents the drive from erasing the data. The discs are intentionally not rewritable, because they are especially intended to store data that the user does not want to erase accidentally. Because of this feature, WORM devices have long been used for the archival purposes of organizations such as government agencies or large enterprises. A type of optical media, WORM devices were developed in the late 1970s and have been adapted to a number of different media. The discs have varied in size from 5.25 to 14 inches wide, in varying formats ranging from 140MB to more than 3 GB per side of the (usually) double-sided medium. Data is written to a WORM disc with a low-powered laser that makes permanent marks on the surface.

Hi, the last couple of nights I\’ve been trying (unsuccessfully) to watch different sub-channels (LAS, Unplugged, Unfilter, FauxShow) on my Roku, but they all seem to fail. After displaying \”retrieving\” for a couple of seconds, the Roku gets bounced back to the screen where it says \”Play\”. I don\’t think it\’s the Roku itself, since BSDNow starts without issue (as well as other channels, like Netflix).
Roku support suggests it might be the JB server(s).
I can always watch via PC, but it would be nice if I could watch via the Roku. Have others experienced the same issue? Or is it most likely something on my end? Thanks!
