“These patterns do the dirty work for the developer — they are curated packages of code, one-click GitHub repos, documentation and resources that address some of the most popular areas of development, including AI, Blockchain, Containers and IoT. These patterns will help developers get right to the task at hand, giving them more time to innovate and build,” Angel Diaz, vice president of developer technology and advocacy at IBM, wrote in a post.

Today I’d like to announce Homebrew 1.4.0. The most significant change since 1.3.0 is that Homebrew filters environment variables.

The Patreon page says they receive $177 per month. That’s too low for a project with such a high popularity and usage.

I read somewhere ( and I bet ) it’s used by Google / Facebook / Apple employees.

CIA Weapons now flooding into Syria since Russian support began.

The American-made TOW antitank missiles began arriving in the region in 2013, through a covert program run by the United States, Saudi Arabia and other allies to help certain C.I.A.-vetted insurgent groups battle the Syrian government.
The weapons are delivered to the field by American allies, but the United States approves their destination. That suggests that the newly steady battlefield supply has at least tacit American approval, now that Russian air power is backing President Bashar al-Assad.
“By bombing us, Russia is bombing the 13 ‘Friends of Syria’ countries,” he said, referring to the group of the United States and its allies that called for the ouster of Mr. Assad after his crackdown on political protests in 2011.

The C.I.A. program that delivered the TOWs (an acronym for tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided missiles) is separate from — and significantly larger than — the failed $500 million Pentagon program that was canceled last week after it trained only a handful of fighters. That was unsuccessful largely because few recruits would agree to its goal of fighting only the militant Islamic State and not Mr. Assad.

Rebel commanders scoffed when asked about reports of the delivery of 500 TOWs from Saudi Arabia, saying it was an insignificant number compared with what is available. Saudi Arabia in 2013 ordered more than 13,000 of them. Given that American weapons contracts require disclosure of the “end user,” insurgents said they were being delivered with Washington’s approval.

Dev Hoopla:

Apple has lost the functional high ground – Marco.org

Apple’s hardware today is amazing — it has never been better. But the software quality has taken such a nosedive in the last few years that I’m deeply concerned for its future. I’m typing this on a computer whose existence I didn’t even think would be possible yet, but it runs an OS riddled with embarrassing bugs and fundamental regressions. Just a few years ago, we would have relentlessly made fun of Windows users for these same bugs on their inferior OS, but we can’t talk anymore.

Microsoft is building a new browser as part of its Windows 10 push

Spartan is still going to use Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine and Microsoft’s Trident rendering engine (not WebKit), sources say. As Neowin’s Brad Sams reported back in September, the coming browser will look and feel more like Chrome and Firefox and will support extensions.

Sams also reported on December 29 that Microsoft has two different versions of Trident in the works, which also seemingly supports the claim that the company has two different Trident-based browsers.

However, if my sources are right, Spartan is not IE 12. Instead, Spartan is a new, light-weight browser Microsoft is building.

Why don’t designers take Android seriously?

Hack Programming Language

PHP has always been poorly designed and poorly stewarded, but it\’s appealing to developers because it\’s easy to learn (and tons of programmers already know it, so it\’s easy to hire for), it\’s everywhere and runs on anything, it\’s very fast, and it\’s very simple to host and maintain server-side. In short, it\’s extremely practical.

Since Facebook is migrating its own code to Hack, pure PHP will become a less-tested second-class citizen on HHVM. This could devalue HHVM to the outside world, throwing away the benefits it’s bringing to PHP programmers everywhere. The closeness of the two languages will probably prevent this from becoming a significant problem, but it’s a problem nonetheless.

NSA is CRAZY

Sanders, in a letter dated 3 January, defined “spying” as “gathering metadata on calls made from official or personal phones, content from websites visited or emails sent, or collecting any other data from a third party not made available to the general public in the regular course of business”.

The NSA’s director, Gen. Keith Alexander, told the advisory panel, the Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies, that the “NSA itself has seriously considered moving to a model in which the data are held by the private sector.” But, according to a review group member, Alexander told the group that “no one else wanted it — especially not the phone companies.” Alexander, the member said, “described it as a ‘bit of a hot potato.’ ”

As expected, on Thursday the ACLU filed notice that it will appeal Pauley’s decision before the second circuit court of appeals. The civil liberties group said in a statement that it anticipates making its case before the appellate court in the spring.

“The government has a legitimate interest in tracking the associations of suspected terrorists, but tracking those associations does not require the government to subject every citizen to permanent surveillance,” deputy ACLU legal director Jameel Jaffer said in the statement.

Devil Weed Takes Root in America

Owners of the 37 new dispensaries around the state reported first week retail sales to The Huffington Post that, when added together, were roughly $5 million.

Prices also were boosted by the state’s 25 percent tax on retail purchases, including a 15 percent excise tax and a 10 percent sales tax. Voters approved the levy in November. Local taxes can add more to what customers pay.

Six days after sales became legal, stores are rationing how much they sell, and a company that makes cannabis-infused sparkling fruit drinks, chocolates, mints and more ran out of supplies in just three days, Denver’s local ABC affiliate reported. Among retailers, Lodo Wellness Center in downtown Denver, for example, is limiting customers to an eighth of an ounce, or one-eighth of what they can legally buy, it said.

The ArcView Group, which matches marijuana entrepreneurs and investors, has estimated the legalized pot market in the U.S. could reach $10.2 billion over the next five years, from $1.44 billion last year, as other states join Colorado and Washington in legalizing recreational marijuana use.

The Money Problem

Still, the federal prohibition means banks won’t accept marijuana businesses for traditional bank accounts, and retailers said they can’t take advantage of traditional business tax writeoffs.

Financial institutions don’t want to run afoul of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, which can charge fines of up to $500,000 per transaction for working with companies who sell illegal products. Though Colorado and Washington have been cleared for adult recreational use sales, and 21 states (plus the District of Columbia) have legalized pot for medicinal use, marijuana remains illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act. Even a state-owned bank, which one Washington lawmaker has proposed, would have to abide by federal banking laws. The discrepancy between state and federal law puts financial institutions at risk of money laundering prosecution, and they want precise assurances before assuming that risk. “They want the safe harbor to be so abundantly clear,” said Rep. Heck.

The irony here is rich. A year ago, British-based bank HSBC was fined $1.9 billion for actual money laundering for Mexican drug cartels, suspected of killing thousands of innocent civilians. HSBC had no problem doing very profitable business with the illegal drug trade, and they basically got away with it, with no criminal prosecution and a paltry fine. But in Washington and Colorado, you have legal businesses operating within state law, and no bank will touch them. “I guess they don’t think we’re big enough dollar-wise for them to risk it,” said Alex Cooley of Solstice. “But it’s crazy, in Washington, Bank of America is the state bank. They’ll take our tax revenue from the state but they won’t take our money.”

The Legalization Trend

Dev Hoopla

My guess is that the conversion will start slow. Perhaps Google will start to push Chrome apps for the Android version of Chrome. Maybe in a year, when those rumored Google stores start to show, we’ll see a Chrome for Mobile “developer phone.” Regardless of the conversion starts, my bet is that within the next five years Google will start publically pushing Chrome as its next generation operating system.

Google is fixing its eyes on its favoured partner, Samsung. The Android OS made the South Korean tech giant become the dominant smartphone maker in the world with nearly 215 million smartphones in 2012 or 40 per cent of the global market.

Data released by UK\’s Juniper Research shows that although Samsung has retaken the smartphone sales lead from Apple, with 42.2 million sold against 35.1 million, Apple is easily leading in terms of revenue from mobile sales. It estimates that Apple\’s mobile revenues were $29.3 billion, when including the iPad. By comparison, Samsung\’s revenue from all mobile devices including feature phones came in at $17 billion.

They\’re actually generating more than 100 percent of the industry\’s earnings — 106 percent, to be precise — according to a report from Canaccord Genuity.

That may seem impossible, but it\’s largely because rivals — like Research In Motion, Nokia, and Motorola — posted operating losses during the September quarter, the firm said.

In fact, the games that result from these ideas are almost always terrible half-assed atrocities aimed squarely at the pants of adolescent hormones. Since this weekend is the BIG GAME, and none of us have much interest in it, we’ll be using Hulu’s statement as a jumping-off point to discuss some of OUR ideas on the future of Internet media delivery, as well as some really neat what-ifs, and a few glimpses at neat sci-fi tech that could change the way we get our media.

HULU

Hulu’s statement by CEO Jason Kilar

  • Consumers, Advertisers and Content Creators will drive the future market directly, instead of relying upon Content Delivery Services to manage the 3 of them individually.
    • Content Delivery will become a passive market, instead of an active one.
  • Consumers are the greatest marketing force a program can have, via social media tools.
    • “Chuck” – almost cancelled after 2nd season, resurrected by fan support.
    • “The Cape” – already backed down to 10 episodes, from 13. Likely canned soon.
  • Advertisers will seek to target people directly, instead of shows as proxies for people based on assumed interest and demographics.
    • Accuracy of online media demographics greater than TV surveys.
  • Hulu’s advertisements are roughly 2x as effective as traditional TV, with ¼ of the screen time.
