Ubuntu Devs Uncertain about Using Wayland by Default in 17.10

Ubuntu Desktop team lead Will Cooke remarks that: “my gut feeling is that wayland (sic) isn’t ready yet,” and Didier Roche says the distro will ‘default to xorg until we take a decision’.

Warning: Grsecurity: Potential contributory infringement and breach of contract risk for customers

It is inseparable from Linux and can not work without it. it would fail a fair-use test (obviously, ask offline if you don’t understand). Because of its strongly derivative nature of the kernel, it must be under the GPL version 2 license, or a license compatible with the GPL and with terms no more restrictive than the GPL. Earlier versions were distributed under GPL version 2.

Steam Client updates later on around 21:50 which will include a “major redesign of the Steam Client”, which they said they know is long overdue. The new Library and Game Launch Page sound like they will see the biggest changes, with much more content shown to the user.
Hopefully this will also include support for scaling, since the Steam Client is currently terrible for high resolution displays.

Benchmarking nftables

Basically, my idea was to find out how much certain firewall setups affect performance.

It clearly shows how performance suffers as the number of rules increases. Interestingly, the decrease in throughput is not linear with rule count, so the overhead introduced with adding rules becomes less and less significant the more rules there are already. In practical boundaries though, one can assume a linear regression. Also worth noting is that iptables performs slightly better.

What’s New in Fedora 26 Workstation – Fedora Magazine

  • Linux 4.11.8
  • GNOME 3.24
  • LibreOffice 5.3
  • Fedora Media Writer gains ARM support
  • Builder now features improved support for systems like Flatpak, CMake, Meson, and Rust.
  • Qt Adwaita theme contains many improvements and looks closer to its GTK counterpart than ever.
What is Fedora Boltron?

Boltron is an upcoming prototype of Fedora Modularity. A formal description is documented in Changes/Modular Server Preview on the Fedora wiki. This page tracks the progress of the release.

Changes/NoMoreAlpha – FedoraProject

By gating Rawhide builds from landing in the compose and gating the publication of composes on automated test results we will ensure Rawhide will always be at Alpha quality. This will make it more generally useful to people as a daily driver and development platform, and mean we no longer need to go through the process of building, testing and shipping Alpha releases.

openQA is a testing framework that allows you to test GUI applications on one hand and bootloader and kernel on the other. In both cases, it is difficult to script tests and verify the output. Output can be a popup window or it can be an error in early boot even before init is executed.

Canonical sharpens post-Unity axe for 80-plus Ubuntu spinners

More than 80 workers at Ubuntu-maker Canonical are facing the chop as founder Mark Shuttleworth takes back the role of chief executive officer.

Ubuntu Budgie Released

Ubuntu Budgie v17.04 (zesty) Released: April 13th 2017

A significant portion of this development cycle has been spent integrating with the Canonical build-system. Key visible integration items were:

  • Plymouth customisations
  • utilizing the Ubiquity installer
  • reworking packages to remove the “budgie-remix” identities and replaced with the updated “Ubuntu Budgie” identity.

This is the Ubuntu 17.10 Release Date

Ubuntu 17.10, codename Artful Aardvark, be the first version of Ubuntu since 2011 to not ship with the Unity desktop by default. Instead, **Ubuntu 17.10 will use GNOME as the default desktop environment **(it’s probable that this could be GNOME 3.26, due for release in September).

The Ubuntu release that will be delivered in October 2017, designated 17.10.

BFQ I/O Scheduler Queued For Linux 4.12

BFQ has been used for a while now by some different Linux distributions that have opted to carry the patches. It’s seen a lot of work over the years while finally for Linux 4.12 it looks to be mainlined.

The BFQ scheduler has been queued in the Linux-Block For-Next tree meaning it should then be sent in for the upcoming Linux 4.12 merge window.

BFQ is a proportional-share storage-I/O scheduler that also supports hierarchical scheduling with a cgroups interface. Here are the main nice features of BFQ.

  • Low latency for interactive applications
  • Low latency for soft real-time applications
  • Higher speed for code-development tasks
  • High throughput
  • Strong fairness, bandwidth and delay guarantees

NVIDIA Makes Huge Code Contribution To Qt, New Qt 3D Studio

NVIDIA open-sourced and contributed to Qt the NVIDIA DRIVE Design Studio, which is a “designer friendly 3D UI authoring system” and Qt is now releasing it with the name Qt 3D Studio.

Interview: Thomas Weissel Installing Plasma in Austrian Schools

About 34 classrooms, 2 consulting rooms, the room for teachers and one computer lab just got upgraded to a custom “distribution” based on Kubuntu and KDE neon. At least 75 teachers are going to work with the system. Most of the 700+ students are not going to touch these computers (because they are locked away) but in their 5th grade every one of them gets a live USB flash-drive in order to work with the very same system in the computer lab.

The State of Plasma

Since 2014, Plasma has kept me entertained and disappointed in equal measures. At some point, I had it crowned my favorite desktop, and then it went downhill steeply, fast, struggling to recover. Not helping was the slew of bugs and regressions across the distro space, which exacerbated the quality of Plasma and what it could show the world.

Linux 4.10 – Linux Kernel Newbies

This release adds support for Intel GVT-g for KVM (a.k.a. KVMGT), a full GPU virtualization solution with mediated pass-through, starting from 4th generation Intel Core (Haswell) processors with Intel Graphics. This feature is based on a new VFIO Mediated Device framework. Unlike direct pass-through alternatives, the mediated device framework allows KVMGT to offer a complete virtualized GPU with full GPU features to each one of the virtualized guests, with part of performance critical resources directly assigned, while still having performance close to native. The capability of running native graphics driver inside a VM, without hypervisor intervention in performance critical paths, achieves a good balance among performance, feature, and sharing capability.

GNOME 3.24 Desktop Environment Enters Beta, Final Release Is Coming March 22

GNOME 3.23.90 is now available. This is the beta release for the upcoming stable GNOME 3.24 release. At this point, we have entered feature freeze, UI freeze, and API freeze, so developers should be focused on bugfixes and stability improvements for the next month as we approach GNOME 3.24,” said Michael Catanzaro in a mailing list announcement.

The upcoming beta of Ubuntu GNOME 17.04 — regular Ubuntu only takes part in the second beta — will feature GNOME 3.24 Beta 1 (v3.23.90) and defaults to the latest GNOME Shell desktop.

GPD Pocket, The 7-Inch Ubuntu Laptop is Now Live on IndieGoGo

It took the little 7-inch laptop less than 7 hours to leap over its $200,000 fixed funding goal. This means the device will (barring any hiccups) be produced.

The device is super small, measuring a teeny 7.1-inch by 4.2-inch (and standing a mere 0.7-inch tall). The GPD Pocket offers a 7-inch 1920×1200 IPS screen, pushing a pixel-popping 323 PPI. Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Despite the diminutive proportions the unibody magnesium alloy case contains some powerful internals.

Core specs:
  • 7-inch full-HD (1920×1200) IPS touch display
  • Intel Atom x7-Z8750 CPU (Quad Core) @ 1.6GHz
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB eMMC

The device does have a fan. GPD says this ‘active cooling’ means its** performance is better than the Microsoft Surface 3**, which is passively cooled.

Also:
  • 7,000 mAh battery (12 hours battery life estimated)
  • 802.11ac WiFi
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • 1x USB 3.0 Type-C
  • 1x USB 3.0 Type-A
  • micro HDMI
  • 3.5mm headphone jack

An option USB Type-C dock can be attached to provide an additional 2x USB 3.0 ports and an SD and microSD card reader.

The included QWERTY keyboard takes up as much room as possible, with a small pointer nub in-between a split space bar (yup, no trackpad, no palm rest).

More than just thin but also small, small to fit in your pocket!

Solus Review

The 6 Linux Distros We’re Most Excited For in 2017 – OMG! Ubuntu!

Solus couldn’t not feature on this list, could it? It’s arguably the most innovative and important desktop Linux distribution to arrive in the last few years — and it’s one that has been built pretty much entirely from scratch!

Yup, Solus is not an Ubuntu fork wearing a different shade of lipstick, or a over-themed Fedora port. It’s a bona-fide brilliant OS in its own right, with its own desktop (Budgie, built impeccably upon GNOME technologies so that it can run without issue on other distros); its own package manager (‘eopkg’); and it has a laser-like focus on being a good desktop distribution.

While, in 2016, Solus is not the most stable of operating systemst (it is a rolling release, after all) one has to appreciate that it is, comparatively, very early days for the OS, which is amazing when you see what they’ve achieved in such a short space of time.

In South Korea the World’s first giant manned robot, runs Linux

The world’s first giant, manned robot “Method-2” took some of it’s first steps in the Gunpo studio of Hankook Mirae Technology company near Seoul, Thursday.

The 3,9m (13ft) Method-2 robot responds to the actions of its handler who is seated in a central cockpit, walking like a human and moving its 130kg (286lbs) robot arms and fingers.

Around 30 engineers have been testing the mammoth machine and lead designer Vitaly Bulgarov drew inspiration from his previous work on the fantasy films, Transformers and Terminator. Since 2014 the company have invested about $200 million (€191.3 million) in the robot’s production and development and estimate it could be on sale by the end of 2017 at a price of around $8,3 million (€7,9 million).

Emby Server 3.1: Faster and Lighter than Ever Before

A new release of Emby Server is currently rolling out. This new release has a lot of important bug fixes, as well as new features. It’s also much faster than ever before and we think you’re going to enjoy that. Let’s go over the highlights.

OBS Studio 17.0.0 adds support for capturing previous x minutes and a Linux memory leak fix

General changes:
– Added a replay buffer feature. The replay buffer is available in just simple output mode (for now, will add it to advanced output mode later), and allows the user to create snapshot recordings (via hotkey) of a specific amount of time prior to triggering the hotkey.
– Added saturation and hue shift to color correction filter
– Added import/export options for scene collections and profiles
– Added the ability to copy and paste scene item transforms
– Added options to the output timer tool to start the output timers every time recording/streaming is started
– Increased maximum number of possible audio tracks to 6 (up from 4), allowing more advanced audio splitting
– Fixed a bug where semi-transparent images would not look right when filters were applied
– Fixed a bug where Y800 (grayscale) video devices would come out as red
– Fixed a freeze when reordering filters
– Fixed a X11-related memory leak in certain cases (causing memory to slowly continue to allocate memory until exhausted)

Feedback:

Hexoshi is a libre game generally inspired by the Metroid series. It is a work in progress, but once completed, it will be onpon4’s biggest game yet, with a maze-like world spanning hundreds of individual rooms. The intention is to make this one of the greatest libre free-roaming games to date.

  • Message: Antergos … GDM = Wayland… NATIVE! Was it before Fedora 25…???

So, watched show LAS 445 Hats Off to Wayland and found something very interesting. I’ve been running Debian on all my PC’s in the house… server and “workstations”. I decided to give Antergos a try based of some of your recent shows. I like it so much, I switched all my workstations to Antergos… Server is still Debian, but I like stable for that. Let me tell you, the switch was a bit of a process… I have my own “post install script” I run that installs software, maps nfs blah blah had to change that to look at distro to know if pacman or apt should be used. Anyway, all is great again.

But back to my point. The family room pc (intel NUC), I like to have GDM on it. It’s a touch screen monitor and my kids can just tap their icon, it goes in and on their desktop it has shortcuts to stuff like pbskids.org. Well, I had set up all that before switching it to GDM. Made the switch and icons disappeared! WHAT? Come to find out, Antergos automatically starts using Wayland when you disable lightdm and enable GDM. And with wayland on Antergos, it won’t display desktop icons, so at lgin screen I had to change kids default desktop to “Gnome on Xorg” to get their icons back.

So, during the show, I had an “AH HA!” moment when you said something to the effect of “Wayland liking GDM” So… jumped on one of my test rigs that had Antergos with lightdm… sure enough, multiple entries for Gnome in desktop selection at login, but now matter which ones I tried, none of them would fire up Gnome on wayland. I disabled lightdm and enable gdm and sure enough… gnome with wayland. Command: echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE told me so! Seems to be, no matter what, when using lightdm it will default to xorg no matter what you choose.
So, keep that in mind …. might be also be why Noah had different experiences with mouse usage.

So, yes… Antergos does bring you Gnome on Wayland natively… if you use GDM instead of lightdm. And guessing you had it before Fedora 25 if you used GDM.

  • Subject: Hangover on Nextcloud… Calendar on Nextcloud 11 major bug spams a users contacts while importing a calendar from google

  • Message: Hey Chris and Noah,

Today I installed Nextcloud 11 on FreeBSD11.0p6, I was totally impressed and after setting up the admin account decided I would set up a user and see what was possible.

I decided to not initially setup an email account but rather first imported google contacts, and a google calendar. They were large datasets from an account I have been using since 2005.

That may have been a mistake… As the calendar was importing I started to get bounce mails come into my server’s postmaster account.

Nextcloud was sending all those who were invited to previous calendar events emails from sitename@configdomain.tld

So my server was spamming 11 years of calendar contacts…

Immediately I shut down postfix on my freebsd server…

sudo service postfix onestop

and notice that still the import was not only half way finished and already over 100 mails were sent out…

This is going to really piss off folks like me who saw this project featured on Linux Action Show and decided to import data into a new install. Ut was specifically touted this project as a replacement for Google Apps and Dropbox!

Well it seems like less marketing promo press releases and more devs testing especially the functions users use when adopting nextcloud is in order.

Regards,
Oclair

P.S. I know posting chat from IRC is not good form for a bug report but hopefully you can let your viewers know to beware of the import tools until they are more closely audited…

PiCluster is a simple way to manage Docker containers on multiple hosts. I created this

PiCluster will only build and run images from Dockerfile’s on the host specified in the config file.

Wayland in Fedora 25

The big news for desktop users in Workstation is the Wayland display server has finally replaced the legacy X11 Window server. Wayland has been in the works since 2008. The point of Wayland is to provide a smoother, richer experience for graphical environments. X also had a huge amount of functionality that was no longer being used.

On top of Wayland, Fedora 25 Workstation runs GNOME 3.22. This latest desktop claims to offer multiple file renaming, a redesigned keyboard settings tool, and additional user interface improvements. If, like me, you’re not a GNOME fan, Fedora 25 also supports spins with other default desktops. These include KDE, XFCE, LXDE, MATE, and Cinnamon.

How To Test

  1. Boot a fresh F25 workstation install.
  2. Verify that the login screen is running under Wayland (you can do so by looking for a process called gdm-wayland-session in ps -ef output)
  3. Verify that the session chooser offers ‘GNOME’, ‘GNOME on X11’ and ‘GNOME Classic’, and that ‘GNOME’ is selected by default.
  4. Log into all three of these sessions and verify that ‘GNOME’ gives you Wayland (you can verify this by bringing up the GTK+ inspector in a gtk3 application and checking what backend is used), while the other two end up with X11.

  5. Change the gdm configuration by adding WaylandEnable=false and reboot

  6. Verify that the login screen comes up under X
  7. Verify that only X-based sessions are offered in the session chooser

  8. Log into the Wayland-based session again

  9. Use the desktop normally, and verify that there are no obvious instabilities, or Wayland-specific bugs or performance problems

Tor Phone Is The “Super-secure Version Of Android”, Developed By Tor Project

Aptly named Tor Phone, this new phone has been designed by Tor developer Mike Perry. It’s based on Copperhead OS, an Android distribution that comes with multiple security enhancement. In the past, Google’s Android security team has accepted many Copperhead patches in their Android code base.

Systemic Threats to Software Freedom

Unfortunately, not only is Copperhead the only Android rebuild that supports Verified Boot, but the Google Nexus/Pixel hardware is the only Android hardware that allows the user to install their own keys to retain both the ability to modify the device, as well as have the filesystem security provided by verified boot.

This, combined with Google’s _increasing hostility_towards Android as a fully Open Source platform, as well as the difficulty for _external entities_to keep up with Android’s surprise release and opaque development processes, means that the ability for end-users to _use, study, share, and improve_the Android system are all in great jeopardy.

UbuCon Europe 2016 – Welcome & UBports Announcement – YouTube

Debian putting everything on the /usr

One of the reasons for the change is that the current hierarchy _creates “busy work”_for developers, as Russ Allbery explained in January. He argued the change would mean “we don’t have to try to harass a thousand package maintainers into doing essentially untestable busy-work to try to move things around between __/usr_, _/bin_, and _/lib__to support a tiny handful of systems for which other approaches are available.”

Tor Phone – The Secure Android

The Tor Project has released Tor Phone–a privacy-focused and secure version of Android mobile OS. It’s based on Copperhead OS, a hardened Android distribution. Tor Phone also uses OrWall to force all the connections over Tor network.

For the past year I have been working on a bunch of new features for the

original XFS code from SGI Irix that was donated long ago. The goals
are the same — XFS is intended to behave consistently as it scales to
large storage and many files.

Noah,

I recently installed Antergos on my Oryx Pro and experienced similar problems with the trackpad.

I found that by replacing LightDM with GDM fixed the problems with the trackpad. After switching to GDM, additional setting show up for the trackpad including tap to click.

Also after switching to GDM, the two finger scrolling worked better in particular the horizontal scrolling.

Microsoft SQL On linux is The Real Deal

Now available in a public preview, SQL Server for Linux aims to be full-featured like the Windows edition and a robust, long-term choice for enterprises

Those who wondered what it would be like to run Microsoft SQL Server on Linux now have an answer. Microsoft has released the first public preview of the long-promised product.

Microsoft also wants to make clear this isn’t a “SQL Server Lite” for those satisfied with a reduced feature set. Microsoft has a four-point plan to make this happen.

Microsoft Joins the Linux Foundation

It isn’t about Linux alone

And neither is the Linux Foundation. A lot of the projects Microsoft has been helping under the Linux Foundation umbrella are infrastructure and developer-oriented projects that Microsoft’s user base is interested in using.

Microsoft still has a lot of proprietary software, and it’s going to stay that way

Make no mistake: This move does not constitute a signal that Microsoft is preparing to open-source its key products. The Microsoft Windows kernel, Microsoft SQL Server, crucial parts of the Azure stack, and so on—they are all still strong moneymakers for Microsoft in their current incarnations. You can expect them to remain proprietary for a good long while.

This helps Microsoft help itself

A common theme in discussions about Microsoft’s involvements with Linux and open source is that it’s been a self-serving effort. Over time, Microsoft has found more places where its best interests coincide nicely with those of others—but again, in a pragmatic and transactional manner.

There’s still a lot of room for change on Microsoft’s part

Don’t get this wrong, Microsoft joining the Linux Foundation would have been unthinkable even a short time ago. But it is only one of many possible steps that Microsoft could take.

The Five Dollar Tool That Breaks Passwords

The perils of leaving computers unattended just got worse, thanks to a newly released exploit tool that takes only 30 seconds to install a privacy-invading backdoor, even when the machine is locked with a strong password.

PoisonTap, as the tool has been dubbed, runs freely available software on a $5/£4 Raspberry Pi Zero device. Once the payment card-sized computer is plugged into a computer’s USB slot, it intercepts all unencrypted Web traffic, including any authentication cookies used to log in to private accounts. PoisonTap then sends that data to a server under the attacker’s control. The hack also installs a backdoor that makes the owner’s Web browser and local network remotely controllable by the attacker.

It Turns Out The Btrfs RAID 5/6 Issue Isn’t Completely Fixed

_with headlines like “btrfs RAID5/RAID6 support is finally fixed” when that’s very much not the case. Only one bug has been removed for the key use case that makes RAID5 interesting, and it’s just the first of many that still remain in the path of a user trying to recover from a normal disk failure.

As my father is soon looking at retirement he is going to lose access his work provided laptop. He has asked me for recommendations on a new machine. I’m considering the possibility of moving him over to Linux. He is technologically competent and not afraid of trying something new but is still more comfortable going with a well-known manufacturer. Immediately my first thought was the Dell XPS 13 as he is familiar with them and they also offer Linux support out of the box which is a huge plus as I can purchase the Windows version so that knows he has the option to fallback to Windows if he ends up not liking Linux. However, after looking into the device it appears that these machines are still affected by Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) that can’t be disabled and coil whine issues. Outside of System76 machines is the XPS 13 still the go-to Linux laptop? Do you have any better recommendations? Thanks.

Ubuntu 16.10 Review

  • Ubuntu 16.10

  • Super fast boot into Unity (set your login to auto and give it a shot, tell me that’s not crazy fast)

  • For me personally I never expected to be this surprised by Ubuntu 16.10. I was expecting just another simpler interaction. And that’s exactly what I got, and I didn’t even know I wanted it.

  • Unity 7 is fast, simple, and now runs are lower end hardware and VM’s a lot better.

  • This is the simple, clean, modern looking desktop I’m comfortable recommending to friends and loved ones.

  • But my biggest surprises came when I found myself reloading studio production machines to Ubuntu MATE 16.10.

  • From a desktop environment perspective, we need our desktops to be light on the GPU, simple in their function, and steady. MATE has played that role for a while now on top of Arch in the JB studio.

  • But Ubuntu 16.10’s based on Kernel 4.8 (which brings Skylake improvements, and USB capture/camera device improvements). 16.10’s MATE flavor also ships with MATE Desktop 1.16. The first major distribution to ship a full GTK3+ implementation of the MATE Desktop.

  • The roll out of the Unity 8 Preview is very humble. Very clear on what state this is in, and how end users can play and improve it.

Kernel 4.8 Features

The biggest new feature being a fix for an Intel Skylake power management bug

NFS client updates for Linux 4.8, the next major kernel release, include several performance-related features, more aggressive caching, optimized several code paths, SUNRPC updates, pNFS improvements, and various bug fixes. The performance changes for the NFS client in Linux 4.8 include removing a “performance killer.”

  • Support for overclocking AMD graphic cards
  • Initial NVIDIA Pascal support in Nouveau driver
  • Raspberry Pi 3 SoC support
  • ACPI Low-Power Idle support
  • Support for the Microsoft Surface 3 touch screen
  • Wider range of audio device, USB and webcam drivers

Unity 8 preview session in Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak | Ubuntu Insights

The current experience comes with a minimal set of applications; a browser, terminal and systems settings. Here are a few things you might like to try to flesh out your Unity 8 session and get the most from it.

The main driver for getting Unity 8 in to 16.10 was the chance to get it in the hands of users so we can get feedback and bug reports. If you find something doesn’t work, please, log a bug. We don’t monitor every forum or comments section on the web so the absolute best way to provide your feedback to people who can act on it is a bug report with clear steps on how to reproduce the issue (in the case of crashes) or an explanation of why you think a particular behaviour is wrong. This is how you get things changed or fixed.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 | Ubuntu MATE

The work to port MATE Desktop to GTK3+ has been ongoing for a couple
of years and Ubuntu MATE is the first major distribution to ship a
full GTK3+ implementation of the MATE Desktop. And the absolute latest
release too, MATE Desktop 1.16! Firefox and LibreOffice are also GTK3+
only in Yakkety.

This has been no small undertaking, we’ve changed toolkits twice this
cycle. First from GTK 2.24.x to GTK 3.18, and then again to GTK 3.20. The
themes required two significant upgrades during this process.
We’ve also upgraded through three MATE Desktop versions this cycle,
starting from 1.12 to 1.14, to 1.15 and finally to 1.16.

We originally planned to complete the migration to GTK3+ for the
Ubuntu MATE 17.04 release, but thanks to those of you who have generously
supported the Ubuntu MATE crowd-funding
we’ve achieved that
objective well ahead of schedule!

newest _MATE 1.16 desktop environment_based on the latest GTK+ 3.20 technologies, Ubuntu MATE 16.10 is probably the most important milestone of the official Ubuntu flavor built around the MATE Desktop

Being re-worked from scratch, more or less, Ubuntu MATE 16.10 ships with the ability for users to uninstall default applications without issues.

Ability to broadcast LIVE audio through icecast. Internet DJ Console is a project started in March 2005 to provide a powerful yet easy to use source-client for individuals interested in streaming live radio shows over the Internet using Shoutcast or Icecast servers.
Because of the large number of streaming applications that already existed but did little more than stream a pair of audio channels or a fixed playlist, it was decided that IDJC would be the opposite and simulate audio hardware to cut down the expense of creating a home studio.

Unlike Mixxx is designed to stream live audio not just pre-recorded MP3s

HTC Vive VR demo on Linux used Kubuntu at SteamDevDays

As mentioned before, SteamVR on Linux will use Vulkan and not OpenGL. This is probably one of the main things that held up SteamVR/HTC Vive support on Linux.

While we found out today Valve is finally expected to show a VR Linux demo likely using the HTC Vive, it turns out Collabora has been working on their own Linux VR effort with a focus on a fully open-source driver for the HTC Vive for the OSVR platform.

Subject: Barebones Linux Follow Up

Message: Hi guys, I’m writing in about the LAS438 question regarding a “barebones” distro. I’d like to give a shameless plug to my set of “GeckoLinux” spins based on openSUSE. Among the 8 spins, I actually have one called “BareBones”, which is basically an openbox desktop with Firefox, rxvt, and the YaST configuration tools, nothing else. There’s a BareBones based on openSUSE Leap (long-term fixed-release cycle) and another for Tumbleweed (super-stable rolling release). You can download it at geckolinux.github.io or clone it on SuseStudio.

Subject: Ghislain is looking for a distro to do the following three things

  1. Full Disk Encryption
  2. Installation on RAID 1
  3. Support multi screen three by default

Full Message: Hi Noah !

I still have my windows machine but i go rid of the last windows software necessary to run my business bu going webbased for my billing. For my workstation as my main working PC at my company i wanted to run a linux KDE desktop ( i love the layout of the plasma 5 desktop) but gnome would do also, i do not like at all the ubuntu unity one so i prefer to avoid it but i can live with it if i have raid and encryption.

On my research i had quite a lot of issue as most distro i tried to install do not support the basic i need “out of the box”. Those “basics” are:

  • full disk encryption ( i use truecrypt on windows)
  • installation on a raid 1
  • support multi screen (3) by default

For now i do not find any distro that support the raid 1 thing in the installer.

I have to manually do some magic mojo to have a simple install in raid1 in the installer.

The second challenge is that allmost all the non KDE 5+ distro i tried did not support the 3 screen i have with my 2 low power AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series cards. The others would see 2 screen and not the third or see it but do not allow to move the mouse to it.

So right now i have kubuntu and antegros that is working , the last one was installed but i had to do some mojo to install it with raid and i do not have encryption so i must restart my install.

This is where you can help Do you know of a distro you think can support those simple business need (raid1, encryption, multi screen) without the need to manually tweak many thing by hand and pray no error was made ? Hope you do

Ghislain.

Plasma 5.8 Review

KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS Released, This Is What’s New

Plasma 5.8 LTS “marks the point where the developers and designers are happy to recommend Plasma for the widest possible audience be they enterprise or non-techy home users,” project lead Jonathan Riddell says.

Modifier-only shortcuts, a highly requested functionality for the Plasma desktop, has been added. This allows you to launch an application by pressing a Meta key. The inclusion of Wayland to the Plasma desktop has facilitated the addition of this feature which has also been backported the X11.

Another notable feature is the support for right-to-left scripts like Urdu, Hebrew, etc. The widget explorer, window switcher, activity manager can be seen on the right side of the screen for such languages.

Wayland debuted on Plasma with 5.4 release. Since then, it has been continuously improved for stability and features. In the Plasma 5.8 LTS, a lot of work has been done on Wayland which now supports the GTK+ toolkit. The support for multitouch gestures and touchscreen devices has been enhanced, although, no default gestures are actually present as of now. The X11 and Wayland-based applications can now have a shared clipboard.

Review Notes
  • Now if you don’t recall KDE Neon is not a distro per sey, rather it’s a great way to play with KDE. Basically you get the Ubuntu base and the KDE Plasma Desktop and that’s it! Everything NOT KDE related is maintained by Canonical/Ubuntu. KDE Neon only cares about KDE’s stack.

  • They provide downloads to make initial setup easier for users. You could just do minimal install of Ubuntu and then install Neon PPA to essentially get the same thing.

  • They did however fix the wifi bug that some users experienced with Kubuntu so neon WILL fix other things if they need to but basically they “just care about KDE”

  • If you need more infomation go back and take a look at LAS409 where Chris and I deep dive into what exactly is Neon

  • The project leaders have said “If your last dalliance with a KDE desktop was somewhere south of now it may be time to ‘re+assess’, the team say. “Plasma is simple by default, powerful when needed.“ Well as it turns out my last experience with KDE was somewhere south of now so it’s high time we take a looksee.

  • Neon makes sure that KDE’s entire stack is compatible with Ubuntu including updates. Every new release of KDE’s stack will be managed in Neon so if someone wants Ubuntu + KDE then Neon will always be up to date where as Kubuntu has the whole 6 months hold back still.

  • 5.7 to 5.8 is mostly a polish release but a few things stand out for improvements

  • 5.8 offers a very cohesive design, their tag line is “everything is designed to match the KDE experience, from startup to shutdown.” The breeze theme makes sure that everything looks amazing

  • Right off the bat the fact that it’s an 18 month support cycle has me hooked.

  • The nice thing I noticed about Plasma does colour scheme independent of theme. As such you can have any theme with any color scheme. As of the most recent versions of plasma this includes the colours in Icon’s of the default icon theme.

  • I’ve always said there are a few things that make or break a distro for me. Firefox, Thunderbird, Telegram a terminal application and the ability to launch applications with the super key. Up until now we’ve had to rely on the super+space to launch an application. I was pleased to learn that launching Telegram is now as simple as superkey and typing it. Additionally unlike Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity I can launch Telegram immediately after installing it. I don’t need to reboot.

  • Their package manager formally Moo On but now branded as Discover is a great package manager. Muon or Discover is an advanced program with a graphical program that as it’s name obviously implies will allow you to install and remove software. Additionally It will automatically notify you for updates (in the lower right hand corner), but you can use it at anytime to install new package

  • Michael Tunnel our producer who uses this distro as his daily driver and has been invaluable to my review is pretty excited about something that seems like it’s just a minor improvement. The virtual desktop switcher applet now has an option to show only the current screen in multi+screen setups. This seemingly small improvement is great for him because it makes it easier to create the GNOME workflow in Plasma”

  • Last thing to note is the improved global shortcuts. Global shortcuts configuration has been simplified and global shortcuts can now be configured to jump to specific tasks within an application via jump list functionality.

X crash during Fedora update when system has hybrid graphics and systemd-udev is in update

Here’s the short version: especially if your system has hybrid graphics (that is, it has an Intel video adapter and also an AMD or NVIDIA one, and it’s supposed to switch to the most appropriate one for what you’re currently doing — NVIDIA calls this ‘Optimus’), DON’T UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM BY RUNNING DNF FROM THE DESKTOP. (Also if you have multiple graphics adapters that aren’t strictly ‘hybrid graphics’; the bug affects any case with multiple graphics adapters).

OpenMediaVault in Practice Review

OpenMediaVault is the next generation network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux. It contains services like SSH, (S)FTP, SMB/CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, BitTorrent client and many more. Thanks to the modular design of the framework it can be enhanced via plugins.

OpenMediaVault is primarily designed to be used in home environments or small home offices, but is not limited to those scenarios. It is a simple and easy to use out-of-the-box solution that will allow everyone to install and administrate a Network Attached Storage without deeper knowledge.

OpenMediaVault Super Plugins:

  • SnapRAID could give you real data protection.
How Greyhole Works
  • The user defines it’s storage pool by listing all the paths of the different disks he wants to use.
  • When files are added on Greyhole shares’ Landing Zones, the Greyhole daemon moves those files into 1+ of the paths defined as the storage pool. It then replaces the original file (on the share) by a symbolic link pointing to one of the copy created in the pool.
  • Samba is configured to use opaque symbolic links, i.e. what are in fact symbolic links in the shares appear as normal files to clients.

Lenovo confirms that Linux won’t work on Yoga 900 and 900S laptops

Remove Drive

Device maker Lenovo today issued a statement confirming that its Yoga 900 and 900S convertible laptops cannot boot Linux — only Windows 10.

“requires very specific, complex and unique drivers that require even greater amounts of testing, to ensure class-leading performance with Windows 10”.

“support our Yoga products and our industry-leading 360-hinge” before stating it “does not intentionally block customers using other operating systems”.

Compounding matters, a ‘Lenovo Product Expert’ seemingly responded to a Best Buy customer’s complaint online with the following:

“This system has a Signature Edition of Windows 10 Home installed. It is locked per our agreement with Microsoft.”

If Linux won’t install on your laptop, blame Intel not Microsoft

Here’s the problem: Linux doesn’t support internal solid-state drives in RAID (Intel RST) mode. Linux can see the drive in AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) mode. However, certain Lenovo laptops don’t allow the mode to be changed in the BIOS. You can boot Linux from a USB drive, but not install it on the laptop’s SSD.

Hardware hack enables Linux support on Lenovo Yoga 900 ISK2, undermining Lenovo’s statement

A hardware hack has enabled AHCI support on the Lenovo Yoga 900 ISK2, undermining Lenovo and Microsoft’s claims that Linux is “missing drivers”.

Unfortunately, the procedure to flash the BIOS is too complicated for most people because the person who did it had to use external flashing equipment to bypass Lenovo’s ROM signature check and load the modified BIOS, and he can’t provide the BIOS ROM because it only supports his computer and has private info in it, such as the Windows 10 license for his machine.

Subject: Wallpaper Changer

Message: Hi Chris.

I think it was in last weeks LAS that you were showing your desktop with the wallpaper changer app that took random wallpapers from an online source and set them for you. I like doing something similar because it is good to have variety. You said you are just collecting your favourite background images to a single folder so that you can cycle through them instead randomly grabbing from an online source.

Because wallpaper slideshows do not seem to be baked in to the GNOME DE and I cannot find a wallpaper changer that I like I am instead using a script which I keep running in the background to change my wallpaper every 10 minutes. I don’t know if I already shared it with you but here is my script for changing wallpapers.

#!/bin/bash
WP_DIR="/home/drthpnguin/Dropbox/Wallpapers/HD-Wallpapers"
