Plasma 5.8 LTS Beta. Here for the Long Term.

Thursday, 15 September 2016. Today KDE releases a beta of its first Long Term Support edition of its flagship desktop software, Plasma. This marks the point where the developers and designers are happy to recommend Plasma for the widest possible audience be they enterprise or non-techy home users. If you tried a KDE desktop previously and have moved away, now is the time to re-assess, Plasma is simple by default, powerful when needed.

Is your SSH password revealed when you attempt to connect to the wrong server?

Teleport: Modern SSH server for clusters and teams.

Gravitational Teleport is a modern SSH server for remotely accessing clusters of Linux servers via SSH or HTTPS. It is intended to be used instead of sshd. Teleport enables teams to easily adopt the best SSH practices like:

  • No need to distribute keys: Teleport uses certificate-based access with automatic expiration time.
  • Enforcement of 2nd factor authentication.
  • Cluster introspection: every Teleport node becomes a part of a cluster and is visible on the Web UI.
  • Record and replay SSH sessions for knowledge sharing and auditing purposes.
  • Collaboratively troubleshoot issues through session sharing.
  • Connect to clusters located behind firewalls without direct Internet access via SSH bastions.
  • Ability to integrate SSH credentials with your organization identities via OAuth (Google Apps, Github).

Teleport is built on top of the high-quality Golang SSH implementation and it is fully compatible with OpenSSH.

At Facebook, we take advantage of those features to use SSH in a way that is reliable, secure, and manageable. SSH, more specifically OpenSSH, has a great way to provide both the security and reliability we require: signed certificates with principals.

Samsung Planning To Replace Android With Linux-based Tizen OS On All Smartphones

The largest Android smartphone manufacturer Samsung is considering a shift from Google’s Android mobile operating system. According to a report, the South Korean tech giant is planning to expand its homegrown Tizen OS to all of its devices in future.

The executive said that Samsung launched Samsung Z1 and Z3 in the Indian market to see Tizen’s performance. “Samsung’s Z-branded Tizen-powered phones are popular with Indian consumers. During the first quarter of this year, Samsung sold about 64 million phones there. This means that Tizen is proving its competitiveness,” said the executive.

Apart from smartphones and smartwatches, the Korean giant wants to use Tizen in the Internet of Things applications. The company is soon looking to expand Tizen’s reach to more household devices like cameras, televisions, smart refrigerators etc.

Universal “snap” packages launch on multiple Linux distros

“We hope today’s announcement will be surprising because it’s not about Ubuntu,” Shuttleworth said in a press calls held earlier today.

Ubuntu’s “snappy” new way of packaging applications is no longer exclusive to Ubuntu. Canonical today is announcing that snapd, the tool that allows snap packages to be installed on Ubuntu, has been ported to other Linux distributions including Debian, Arch, Fedora, and Gentoo among others.

This repository contains the gnome 3.16 runtimes, org.gnome.Platform, as well as a smaller one that is useful for less integrated apps (like games) called org.freedesktop.Platform. It also has corresponding develoment runtimes (org.gnome.Sdk and org.freedesktop.Sdk) that you can use to create applications for the platforms.

Right, this has been stopping me from sleeping from a while because it has wound me up quite a lot. (slightly sarcastic)

On a certain episode of L.U.P Chris questioned how Ubuntu applications (made with the Ubuntu SDK) would look on non Ubuntu desktop environments, and quite rightly so came to the conclusion of “well, they would look out of place”. Fine.

Lets stop right now and talk about something else, Gnome “Apps”. Gnome Apps are fucking shit under anything that isn’t Gnome, however nobody is giving Gnome a hard time over this. Gnome is shitting all over everyone else with their poorly designed applications and the Ubuntu Desktop and other desktops are suffering because of it.

Holy cookies I did it..

I created a Jupiter Broadcasting Meetup group. I was inspired by the idea of how nice it would be to have a rough idea of how many folks will be making it out to LFNW. Just to help with planning.

But I realized my long-term plans are a bit more ambitious. As the weather gets nice in the Seattle area, I’d like to hold semi-frequent meetups with Jupiter Colony members that are in the area. Maybe once a month, record them, or stream them. Eat, chat, maybe even create show content.

Also as we travel to other fests, or hit the road, I’d like to have a tool to suss out interest in your area.

So after LFNW I’d like to use the group for that kind of stuff, which sounds like a lot of fun to me!

tl;dr
